    ‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
    Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
    I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
    Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
    If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.
     Cheers, Tom
  • WRT160n v3 has slow connection when multiple users are connected
    As of last night my router has been producing slow connectivity when multiple users are connected to it, but it's perfectly fine when only one user is connected.
    I am on a laptop myself, but we also have a second laptop and a desktop where the modem and router are set up.
    I have upgraded the firmware so that is up to date.
    We have Comcast Fiber Optics so my internet speed is normally quite fast even when all of my computers are connected.
    Some settings that I have that might help resolve the issue:
    I am using DHCP Configuration.
    My Channel Width is set to 20 MHz and I am using Channel 11.
    The Security Mode is set to WPA Personal. I had it on WPA2 Personal but I read that changing to WPA Personal might help and so far it doesn't seem to have done anything.
    I set the Beacon Interval to 50, Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, and RTS Threshold to 2304.
    Everything else is set to the default factory configuration.
    Just today I received a notice that said "Windows has detected an IP Address Conflict", but ever since I reinstalled the Firmware it hasn't come back. I've rebooted both my laptop and the desktop to confirm it hasn't come back as well.
    I consider myself to be computer savy, but I just can't figure out what the problem is as I've tried everything that I could think of including reconfiguring my router and restarting my modem as well. This problem has presented itself in the past before but unfortunately I cannot remember what I did to fix it.
    Try using inSSIDer to help you find the best channel.
    http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/
    If that doesn't help, you can try disabling WMM.
    Edit:  You should use WPA2 AES security for best performance.
  • My MacBook isn't connecting to the Internet. When I try to connect, it shows the signal strength in the top right corner as if it was connected, but the Internet doesn't work. When I go to my network preferences, it says the ip is self-assigned.
    My MacBook won't connect to the Internet, but it's connected to my router. When I go to network preferences, it says that it has a self assigned ip address, and can't connect to the Internet. How can I fix this? Please help!
    First thing you need I think is to get your iMac connected to the Internet.
    Shut down your iMac and you iPad. Then power off your router. Wait 30 seconds and power up the router.
    After the router indicates that it is connected to the Internet then start up your iMac and see if it connects. If the iMac connects to the Internet then your iPad should too.
    If this power up sequence doesn't work you'll have to dig into the router setup to make sure it is working properly.
  • I lose my internet connection on my XP computer when the printer is connected as wireless.
    My new hp6510 wireless printer works great but I lose my internet connection when the printer is connected as wireless. I am using the printer with a linksys router E3000. The network has an XP computer , a win7 64 bit computer. I do not have a problem with the win 7 computer, but the xp computer will drop the internet connection and sometimes I can get it to work by repair of the router connection, but sometimes I will need to reboot the computer. If I stop the wireless connection and use the USB it works OK. I have tried to get help from HP and Linksysm but no help. I would appreciate any suggestions.
  • Connect to one wireless network when multiple networks with the same name
    Hi all,
    I'm at a location where there are two networks with the name (e.g.) "wireless". One uses WEP and one uses WPA. The WEP network is weaker than the WPA network, so my Mac tries to connect to the WPA network, even though I have manually setup the wireless network with WEP security (after trying to connect it asks for a WPA password). Is there a way that I can connect to a wireless network by MAC Address, or some way for me to tell the Macbook to ignore the WPA network? The problem is that the SSID is the same, it seems.
    Thanks,
    Nate
    The person (the landlord) isn't tech-savvy at all.
    That is clearly obvious as
    1. They would not be using WEP
    2. They would setup a different SSID
    WEP is not secure and can be cracked in minutes using tools readily available on the internet. If a hacker gain access to that network they could run other tools and hijack the dns and then you could be visiting sites on your mac that are completely bogus but look real.
    Also it is common trick that hackers use is to setup an access point nearby with the sane SSID to capture details from users that join their network thinking they have joined their own network. Again the hacker can hijack the dns and monitor all your browsing and capture details.
    The fact that someone has setup an SSID nearby with the same name would make me very suspicious.
    I would treat your landlord's network as an untrusted network same as when your using a public wifi like coffebucks.
  • ITouch only connects to Wi-Fi conflicts when the laptop is connected
    When the laptop is connected to the WLAN the iTouch connects and browses with no problem at all. Problem is that when the laptop is NOT on oe NOT connected the iTouch WILL see the wifi signal but refuses to connect. this is obviously a major pain. My friends iPhone finds and connects to the home network without issues - ie regardless of whether the laptop is on or off.
    can anyone suggest a remedy? My iTouch is only 24hrs old!
    thanks in advance, DM
    Here's what's happening in my case. I have a siemens se567 router. I have a LAN with three computers using it. It's encrypted WEP64 bit. Everything is working fine except the new itouch. It connects, shows a strong signal, but won't allow the browser to connect to the internet. It do not have numbers under the DNS or the router. The Apple people I have spoken to tell me it's the router, and to talk to my adsl provider. The adsl provider tells me it's an apple software problem, they can't help. I can connect to any unencrypted wireless network. I can't even manually put in the router numbers. I have unplugged the router several times, but this doesn't help. I'll try your suggestion for "other" and see if that works. Thanks.
  • I sometimes get Error 42 when opening a TCP connection - how can I fix this ?
    In my Labview application I am opening a TCP connection in an identical way to the Data Client example. I am using a direct connection to external equipment using an ethernet crossover cable. The error occurs on at least 2 different PCs.
    The error can occur regardless of whether anything is connected to the ethernet port of the PC.
    The only way I have found to clear the error is to power down the PC and restart with a connection to the office LAN. Then I can swap back to the crossover cable and talk to the remote equipment once again, ...unitl the next time the error occurs.
    I have LabView 6.0 running on Win98.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Jeremy,
    Thanks for taking the time to answer
    I already checked the link you suggested but I am connecting to my remote instrument with a 2m cross-over cable.
    I Have looked into this a little further, it seems the sequence of events is as follows -
    1. After some hours the connection gets lost.
    2. TCP Read returns error 66 - Connection was closed by peer.
    3. If I try to restart my program I get Error 42 at TCP open Connection.
    4. Rebooting the PC doesn't clear the error 42 problem.
    5. If I try to PING my instument I get "Host unreachable".
    6. I have to "refresh" my network card by connecting to our LAN and either opening a file on another PC or simply sending a PING to another PC.
    6. I can then reconnect my remote instrument via cross-over cable
    and we're up and running for another few hours.
    I get the same problem on two different PCs with different NICs and different OS (Win98 and WinME)
    I am assuming that because a reboot has no effect that its not a memory allocation problem.
    It seems like LabView stops talking to the NIC and then gets locked out some how.
    Any other tips ?
    Whether your product is in or out of warranty, you can take your adapter to an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Retail Store for evaluation and replacement if necessary. Pending the results of the evaluation, you may or may not be eligible for a replacement adapter free of charge. Signs of accidental damage would negate any coverage. Be sure to bring in the computer used with the adapter; it is required to process potential adapter replacements.
    Hi
  • Connected Apple TV Box tonight and it said it needed an update.  I ran the update, and it worked for a few minutes.  Then all of a sudden, a screen popped up showing that I needed to connect via USB plug to my MacBook Air to connect to iTunes.  Why??
    I conneced the Apple TV and it worked fine at first.  It has worked well for some time.  We are using them in our school this year, as well as converting to all apple products.  I have been able to pull up my computer screen through Apple TV onto our projectors.  However, tonight when I started apple TV, the mirroring icon came up, and everything seemed fine.  Then a message came up that the Apple TV Box needed an update.  I clicked on the button to run it now, and it seemed fine.  The mirroring worked for about 5 minutes after the update, then I got a screen that had a picture of the Apple TV Box and a USB cord directed toward a picture of the iTunes icon.  The light on the frontof the component flashed, and I couldn't go to the menu at all.  I wouldn't do anything.  I no longer cold see the Airplay/mirroring icon on my computer either.  I tried to shut everything off and reboot the computer and the Apple TV box.  However, none of this worked.
    Any suggestions???  I'm a high school football coach, and this is how our team will watch film this year.  I really need to get this rectified by the end of the week, as our team will go into camp for the next two weeks.
    Hello Philly,
    I believe that when you reset your ipod(command given from the computer, right?)  touch WHILE the ipod was updating, It cleared the system in the middle of writing files, thus corrupting(equivalent of cutting of in the middle of a sentence) the basic running system.
    I suggest you go to an apple store and ask for a technical diagonosis in person. they may offer to help if the problem is fixable. If your ipod is still under warrenty, i would guess it would be free/low cost.
