Unable to login to existing accounts - tried almost all solutions

Hi,
I have a MacbookPro running 10.5.8. I recently had a crash and when I managed to finally reboot I realized that all my accounts disappeared (one admin account and one user account). So I followed various advice to recover including Apple@s Article TS1543 on Unable to log in after an upgrade install.
By using launchctl through Single user mode I can see the accounts but when I try to delete the passwds through dscl . -delete I get an error message.
Similarly when I go to the passwd utility through the Leopard Installation disk I can only see a user called iPhone - never had such a user and cannot see the other accounts.
I somehow managed to create a new account (deleted the .applesetupdone file) so now I can login as a NEW user BUT I cannot see the former users through Accounts through system preferences.
But the files and folders are there under Users and I can copy my files, but all my user settings, mail software, software licences do not function.
There sure must be a way to sort this corruption, whatever it is.
I would be very grateful if anyone can help!
Thank you.

The crash d'd not happen during a backup but I use TimeMachine - unfortunately I did not back up for about 12 days

  • Unable to login to Spotify account.

I have a Spotify account I set up through my old Facebook. I recently deleted my Facebook, and I cannot access my Spotify. Any suggestions?

Hey there , welcome to the community!
If you login to your Facebook account through the Facebook website it will reactivate your account so you can use it with Spotify. If you'd like to use your account without Facebook, then you will need to create a new account using your e-mail address. If you want to go that route, contact the accounts team at the online contact form and they will set you up with a new account and transfer all your content. If you receive an automated e-mail directing you back to the community, just reply to it and you will be connected with an agent that can assist you.

  • Tried almost all suggestions-itunes 7.1

I downloaded 7.1 on the 8th of March (before time change..and I live in a part of AZ where we don't change time anyway). Getting same problem as some...try to start either with shortcut or other methods and it appears computer is starting and hourglass goes away and nothing loads.
I have: tried uninstalling/reinstalling (including older version). Quicktime works fine. I have turned off Norton while downloading, I have done almost all the suggestions in the troubleshooting sections. And spent multiple hours. I'm afraid I have an I-pod I can't use now. Do I give up and take the program off and use the oldest version ever made available????
    HELP!!!!

b noir. You seem to be able to help everyone else, so I am turning to you as a last ditch effort before I throw my ipod out the window and jump up and down on my computer.
I have bounced around the site for several hours - funny, they call it "support" but there is little involvement from apple-and nothing has worked. I can not open itunes. I finally gave up and loaded my old version from the cd and everything went great until, you guessed it, I was told I HAD to upgrade. I am a working mother of three young children and I just don't have this kind of time! I do not have norton whachamacallit, I only have norton ghost and McAfee, which I switched off as instructed in your note. CAN YOU PLEASE HELP ME!?

  • IChat AV - Unable to login to Google account

    Hello
I really need some help with my iChat. I can't manage to login to my iChat through Google Talk. I have checked all the server settings time and time again.
    I have:
    Server: talk.google.com
    Port: 5223
    Use SSL: Checked
I am using iChat 4.0.5 and Mac OS 10.5.5
Please help, I have really hit a road block with this one
    Thanks

    Same problem here.
The 10.5.5 update has definitely broken something as Gtalk/Jabber stopped to work after I installed.
I tried deleting the account and re-enter the information only to find out that Jabber/GTalk are now greyed out in the preference panel hence, un-accessible.
    Bummer..

  • After installing latest itunes on new PC unable to login to my account in iTunes Store

    Hi all,
I get a new PC and wanted to use it with my apple devices.
System is Windows 7 64 bit and, after installing latest iTunes I am not able to login to iTunes (needed to authorize my new PC and use it with my devices)
Always get the message that iTunes Store is not available at the moment.
For instance, I tried the diagnosys tool inside itunes and everything is ok.
    Please help me...
    Clemente

There are a number of things you could do. One would be to network the two computers and transfer your iTunes folder from one to another. Here are a few links that may help you out:
New PC & moving iTunes library
Copying songs over a network to use with iTunes for Windows
iTunes: Copying music between authorised computers with iTunes for Windows
Another way would be to use an external hard drive, the guide for using the iPod as a hard drive is a good starting point. Apart from the sections on initially setting up the iPod, the instructions are the same for copying the iTunes folder to an actual external drive. If you substitute "external hard drive" for "iPod" the process is the same: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer

  • Is it Firefox causing me to be unable to login to multiple accounts on a single site (in mulitple tabs) at the same time?

For instance I can't look at multiple inboxes using the webmail app at one domain. Also, I have 2 etsy shops and can't log in to both at the same time on different tabs. Logging in as one on one tab, logs me out on the other. Is this a Firefox feature and if so, can I turn it off?

OK. This is not "site specific" it is Firefox specific. I have older versions of Firefox in which this does not happen. The moment I upgrade to a updated version, I have this problem. I have multiple accounts on a single site. When I open another tab, and try to open another account on that new tab, Firefox switches the initial tab to the new account. Previous versions left the original tab alone until I recycled that specific tab.
This particularly affects games, emails everything where you are working on one project with something, stop, someone opens a new tab and opens a new account on same site, and your work is wiped out on the initial tab.
My conclusion: since this multiple accounts-same site was possible on the old versions of Firefox, and it isn't possible on newer versions and it IS possible on Chrome (and I'm checking Safari, Opera and others) - it is a Firefox issue. Let's address it instead of pushing it off on various sites.

  • Mavericks unable to login

Hi. I am unable to login to my account on a MacBook Air (mid 2013): when I enter my password it waits for a second, the screen flickers and then it brings me back to the login screen.
The problem began two days ago when I closed all desktops but one, and then hooked up an external monitor with a VGA adapter. The Mac froze, so I did a cold reboot and since then it won’t allow me to login.
I am, nevertheless, able to login as both a guest user and as an admin, and I have successfully created a new account, so it looks like the problem is user-specific. But this happens also when I do a safe boot, so it doesn’t seem to be related to any launch agents/daemons.
I have tried the following suggestions which I have found online:
    1) resetting my password in safe mode
    2) finding and deleting “com.apple.LaunchServices-*.csstore” for my user id (http://http://junkheap.net/blog/2011/09/22/solving-a-login-loop-in-mac-os-x-lion -due-to-corrupt/)
    3) resetting file flags, and access permissions for all the files in my home directory and resetting the ACL for all files in my home directory (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6237421?searchText=login%20loop)
    None of these has worked.
In one of the forums where suggestions were given, someone provided a bash diagnostics script which when run, produced the output attached at the end of this message. It seems that it is related to a WindowServer crash, but doesn't say much else
What could be the problem, and what can I do to solve it?
    Thanks

My data is safe, but I prefer not to have to reinstall the system or system-wide applications, specially since things work just fine for other users.
I'm doing a workaround: creating a new user, moving all data in there, changing file ownerships. So far so good.
Also, new info: I found the WindowServer log and indeed it shows a crash. The function involved does seem to be related to spaces, at least judging from its name.
    I'm attaching the log.

    Hi,
I am able to connect now using my old account.
But, number of posts reset to ZERO and account creation date showing 2011, but I had created this account before 10 years.
No problems, I am happy as at least I am able to connect.
    Regards,

  • How can a family with multiple existing accounts use Home Sharing?

I'd like to use the new Home Sharing feature, but it appears to be restricted to families in which all of the family members share a single user account.
We already have separate accounts for each family member. Is there some way for us to use Home Sharing without abandoning most of our existing accounts, along with all of the purchases made by those accounts? I don't think anyone in this situation would be willing to do that.

Eh. I am not too sure since I have not messed with it much but I do have a great deal of experience with multiple accounts. Each computer can be authorized for multiple accounts. As can iPods. iPods can sync songs/videos/apps from multiple accounts as long as the computer is authorized with them. What I have set up here, is I buy my stuff I want, my parents buy what they want and so do my brothers. When my bro gets something I want I just move it to my computer. That way all our accounts are separate, but if there is something I want I can get it. Also, since the music no longer has DRM, it won't matter. It will play on any computer. What you should see is if you can just do the shared library with multiple accounts. Then if you don't have videos or such, you can get apps or music. Hope this helps!

  • DS 5.2.4 Upgrade Issue - Unable to login to console

Hello! I have not been able to login to DS console after I have patched it to 5.2.4. I have found another thread with the same issue with solution https://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=8517561 (add ldap library into runtime linking environment using crle) provided but I'm still unable to login to console after I applied the solution. Please kindly advise! Thank you.

Hi anyone can advise me on this?

  • Unable to login in to Mac App Store using valid account.

I recently inherited a spare MacBook Air from my wife (who got a new one). I deleted her user account, and set up a new admin user account for me. The machine is running 10.7.5.
Now, I am absolutely unable to login to the App Store. I am using my valid Apple ID -- for example, the same Apple ID that I used to gain access to this very forum. System Preferences accepts my ID. iTunes accepts my ID. BUT the App Store will aboslutely NOT respond. It will not load. I get the red "connection failed" alert, and then after several tries it doesn't respond at all.
It doesn't give any option to switch users -- perhaps once the original owner has used the App Store, the computer will never again allow anyone else to use it? It doesn't say that there is another user logged in. There appears to be no way of deleting and reinastalling the App Store. There is no cache file I can find to be cleared. There is no preference option. There is no information. There appears to be no way of fixing this at all, short of wiping the hard drive and reinstalling the operating system. Is that what I have to do? WHY IS THIS SO HORRIBLY DESIGNED? And why is there no support short of the forum? I hate this about Apple (despite being a long-time Apple evangelist and OSX devotee).
    Thanks.

The first thing you should do after acquiring a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. How you do that depends on the model. Look it up on this page to see what version was originally installed.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard installation disc, which you can get from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. I suggest you install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the gray installation discs that came with it. If you don't have the discs, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, it should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Once booted from the disc or in Internet Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive, which is what you should do.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
You should then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. If you want to upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, buy it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Apple customer service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.

  • Can not log into server computer with any accounts - "You are unable to login to the user account "abcdefg" at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred."

I have a Mac mini running the latest version of OS X and Server. Been running fine and flawlessly. However, I had a strange problem with the iCloud preferences panel crashing when I tried to access it, so I rebooted. Now I can not log into the system with any accounts. My master admin account (along with all the others) gives me the error:
You are unable to login to the user account "abcdefg" at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred."
I am able to see the server from other macs and I can log into it using the same account, but it only shows me a few of the shared folders I have access to but NOT to my main directories.
Rebooting into Command-R and doing a disk utility, I try and repair permission on that drive and get a bunch of errors like:
ACL found but not expected on Users
    Repaired "Users"
ACL found but not expected on Users/.localized
    Repaired "Users/.localized"
ACL found but not expected on Users/Shared
    Repaired "Users/shared"
ACL found but not expected on Users/Shared/.localized
    Repaired "Users/Shared/.localized"
    Permissions repair complete.
But rebooting is no joy...same problem. Any idea what is going on or how to repair it? Should I do a time machine restore? Complete new OS X install? Any idea what is causing this or how to salvage it?

Got everything to re-install and it worked fine...for a few hours. Then I came in to find ALL of my network users deleted. Just GONE. Then found out the Open Directory was trashed and was unable to open, recover or restore from a backup. Looks like I may have a bad drive here.
I installed a new drive in the system, re-installed and so far (for a couple of hours anyway) the system seems to be working and stable.
