Unable to start crs on single-node instance

Hello -
I am running 11.1.0.7 for my ASM instance, and I am unable to start crs. I get the following error message:
[root@mbiwfhmdwee 624]# ./crsctl start crs
Attempting to start Oracle Clusterware stack
Failure at scls_scr_create with code 1
I just installed the Oracle software, and this is the first time I am trying to get ASM running on this server.
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks,
Mike

you are probably hitting bug 4632899 - CSS does not start if hostname has capital letters (ML note 4632899.8)
=> Change the hostname to from uppercase to lower case.

  • Unable to start crs services

    Hi,
I have completed installation of Oracle Clusterware 10.2.0.1 on Linux X86, RHEL 4 (using OCFS2). This is a two node system.
After running a few tests we had some disk corruption on the shared storage system and hence we had to reformat the shared filesystem (only the shared FS not the local filesystems on the nodes). I copied the backup OCR and VDISK files into their original directories after the formating, and moved the mirror backups into their original directory. But I am unable to start the cluster services, I have tried the following
    $./crsctl start crs
    Attempting to start CRS stack
The CRS stack will be started shortly
    $
Didn't work, no services started up.
I then tried the following command
    $ ./init.crs start
Startup will be queued to init within 90 seconds.
But again I don't see the crs daemons up and running.
I don't see anything in the logs (crsd, css, evmd etc) the last lines there were before we shutdown everything and then formated the shared storage.
If anyone has come across a similar issue then please advice on possible errors I could look for or how to work around this to get the crs services started so that I can install the database software. Any help/advice will be appreciated
    Thanks.

    Hi,
since you mention the reformatting of the shared disks:
    Check /var/log/messages for things like
"Cluster Ready Services waiting on dependencies. Diagnostics in /tmp/crsctl.xxxx",
best use cat /var/log/message | grep crsctl.
After that the mentioned /tmp/crsctl.xxxx file.
You might find Oracle Error PROC-0026 there:
"Error while accessing the physical storage".
What is meant is the OCR.
Check if user/group of the raw devices is still oracle:oinstall, it might have changed to root:disk by reformatting.
I myself had this case unexpectedly now some times even WITHOUT any reformatting, I suspect that touching the raw devices with Linux LVM might change ownership.
    regards
    Robert

    Hi,
    Check the crsd.log under $ORA_CRS_HOME/log/$(hostname)/crsd
That will show you what the error was. At that point, you can look up the error in the documentation (not before, as others posters seem to think). All gsd does is coordinate access amongst the various tools such as dbca, so it isn't "life threatening", anyway. Usually if one dies, though, others may very likely follow.

    Hello,s
First of all, check the status of all resources by using crs_stat -t
Check if your VIP resource is indeed up and running on the node where you want to start the listener. As listener is depending upon this VIP address, it is needed to be up on the node where listener is configured. If this is the case then relocate the vip back to the system by using either of the following commands
    1. crs_relocate <vip_resource_name>
    OR
    2. srvctl start nodeapps -n <hostname>
listener should be automatically up once crs relocates back the vip to the system.
If vip is already running fine on the system then check for your listener configuration as you check in normal systems.

  • Unable to start SOA server through Node Manager

    Hi All,
I am trying to install AIA 11.1.1.6.0 on the top of SOA Suite 11.1.1.6.0.
I was able to install successfully the weblogic server, rcu, soa and osb servers. Now, before installing the AIA, the document i am following it says, make sure to start the soa server through the node manager.
Now i start the admin server, then the node manager, to make sure i have checked that the node manager is up, i logged in to the weblogic console, went to Machines, and i can see that it is up and reachable.
Now using the WLST commands, first i connected to the node manager using command nmConnect(), then i am trying to start the soa server through node manager using the command start('soa_server1') command.
I am getting an error while trying to start soa server with nmStart() command, below is the error message...
"Error starting server soa_server1: weblogic.nodemanager.NMException: Exception while starting server 'soa_server1'"
I executed the dumpStack() command, and i am getting the output as "No stack trace available"
If i am able to start the soa server through the node manager, i can go ahead and install the AIA pack but this is not letting me go forward.
I also tried to start the soa server through the weblogic console., go to servers tab, select the soa_server1 and start, the soa server state is going to "FAILED_NOT_RESTARTABLE".
I followed some of the blogs like...
    http://neeraj-soa-tips.blogspot.com/2010/06/starting-admin-and-managed-servers.html
    http://www.javamonamour.org/2011/09/nmconnect-nmstart-nmkill.html
    Experts, please give your advice.
    Many Thanks,
    N

    Hi Narsing,
I'm assuming that you've followed the required Pre-config steps. If it is not working, I'd suggest to start the Admin and SOA server without node manager first. Then start your node manager and see if it is reachable from the WLS console. Then shut down your SOA server from command prompt and restart your SOA server from WLS console.
Verify the Listen Address of your Node Manager and start your node manager from command prompt by explicitly specifying the same address and port.
As WLS console internally uses node manager only to start your server, you would not need to use WLST scripts to do the same and only SOA server needs to be started using node manager.
    Regards,
    Neeraj Sehgal
    Hi Neeraj,
I made sure that in the weblogic console, in the machines tab, local machine-->configuration--->Node Manager, I have given the correct Listen Address (Narsing-PC) and the listen port 5556.
I have made sure the property StartScriptEnabled= true.
I have started the admin server through startWebLogic.cmd command, now i start the node manager by going to the C:\Oracle\Middleware\wlserver_10.3\server\bin and running the command startNodeManager.cmd, then i go to the weblogic console--->servers--->control--->soa_server1--->start , it is going to      FAILED_NOT_RESTARTABLE status.
If i see the log messages in the nodemanager.log, this is the below message...

  • Unable to start up in "Single User Mode."

I am on an Intel Mac Pro. I can't seem to start up in the Single User Mode.
I hold down the Command and S keys during startup, but always get to my regular screen, logged in to my account. I changed the login options from automatic to off, but the same thing still happens. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Coherence 3.5 - slow start for a single node

    EDIT - wrong forum
    Edited by: user10613309 on 30-Jul-2009 02:42

    Hi Tim,
The only parameter that controls the delay for the very first cluster member is the "join-timeout-milliseconds" element (http://wiki.tangosol.com/display/COH35UG/multicast-listener). I don't think any of the default values change in 3.5, but the value differs dramatically between the evaluation and development modes (3 sec) and the production mode (30 sec)

  • How to start Single Node of Exadata 1/2 Rack

Recently while working on 1/2 Rack of Exadata, one of the node went down. My other nodes are working fine.
Heavy ETL processes are running i don't want to stop them in between, but i want to start up the node which is down.
How can i do so? How can i startup single node of Exadata without bringing down other nodes?

logically ( via ilom ) or physically press the power button. If the node is fine it will come up and join the cluster... and it will start serving requests. Its that simple...
Since crs is enabled it would automatically bring up all required resources during the boot process.

  • Can there be multiple ASM instances on single node?

    Hi,
Can there be multiple ASM instances on single node?
This one says No : http://www.freelists.org/archives/oracle-l/02-2008/msg00317.html
And This one says Yes : http://www.databasejournal.com/features/oracle/article.php/3571371
    Thanks in advance.
    Thanks,
    Harsha

...that document doesnt say you cannot have multiple ASM instances on a node. It says "...ASM, +you only need one ASM+ instance for that computer, to manage the two database instances that use ASM."
The fact that you only need one - and I cannot think of a good reason to have more than one - does not preclude the fact that you do seem to be able to have multiple ASM instances on a single node, each looking after its own set of disks and diskgroups.
Again - I cannot think of a good reason to do so though!
