Unable to update or restore Ipod, never once put songs on it

I am unable to format the Ipod. I couldn't update or restore it. All I get when I plug it into the usb is a message saying that it found a usb mass sorage device. I have Ipod updater 2005-09-06 and it does not recognize the Ipod. I have Itunes 5 and it does not recognize it either. What should I do?

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Did you charge your iPod first?
When you run the iPod software updater, did you run it first or did you plug in the iPod first? You should run the updater first and then plug in the iPod as instructed.

  • Unable to update or restore Ipod due to firmware not found?

Can anyone help me? I've had my Video Ipod for about a year and a half and have never had trouble with it until now. I can't update it to the lastest software as a message comes up Unable to update software due to firmware not being found. I tried to resort to restoring it to the original factory settings but I ran into a message that said Unable to restore ipod due to firmware not found. Has anyone else had this problem? Help!!!

  • What to do when unable to update or restore ipod?

i have been having some issues with my ipod for a few weeks now...it will be playing fine and then will just "freeze up" (it stops playing music and gets stuck on whatever screen it is on). when this happens, i have been resetting it (holding down the middle button and top button at the same time until it reboots). however, today i plugged it into my computer for the first time in a while and tried to update to the latest ipod version (1.3 i think?) and was unable to do so (i received an error message). i then tried to restore it and was unable to do so (i received an error message that said something along the lines of some files being in use by another program). has anyone else had this sort of issue and been able to resolve the issue? any suggestions? thanks!!

I have a very similar problem - HELP! My 5th gen 80gb iPod Video, started playing up a couple of weeks ago, randomly freezing on me causing me to having to keep resetting it (which now seems to take ages). After one particular reset (holding the select and menu button) all my music folders were showing as totally empty/blank, though this seemed to be rectified after another couple of resets.
After another day or so, it happened again and wouldn't clear so I synced it with my PC which seemed to clear it for a couple more days until it all started again. It is also really starting to sound "clunky" whenever i try to turn it on.
In the last couple of days though iTunes won't even recognise it as connected (even though it comes up in my computer as an external disk drive). I just about managed it once and tried to restore my iPod, but even that seemed to fail and now I'm stuck with it, blank, not recognised by iTunes and therefore effectivley useless
Any ideas short of throwing it away?!

  • Unable to reset or restore ipod nano

Hi, Haven't synced my ipod for over a year and today I connected my nano to my laptop, pressed sync and got a message to say files are corrupted. Looked at ipod and it was syncing however it’s actually wiped all files from the ipod. They're still in iTunes. I thinks it's something to do with ipod using file system FAT32. It seems the ipod wants to use that and it can't because it says another program is using it. It won't let me select another file system option, as it says they are in use too. I do have Mini Tool Partition Wizard on my laptop and don't want to uninstall it but I need to sync my ipod. Can anyone advise, please? thanks. (It may be nothing to do with mini tool as I've only used this to root my Sony Xperia smartphone).

    Try:

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

I just bought a new ipod and have been unable to transfer music from my g5 to the ipod.

From the itunes summary screen, the Update and Restore buttons are both greyed out, and it says only Macintosh-formatted ipods can be updated.

I found some information that needs to be published that iTunes makes no gurantees on recommended or required updates at the iTunes store of the compatablity of the products being sold and the updated iTunes software. Case in point; If you purchase games from the iTunes store and have downloaded the latest version of iTunes 7, your iPod will not play these games, for example video poker and Bejeweled. Go the following link and read it for yourself. There are no gurantees either that you will be able to update or restore your iPod. WARNING!!!!

Check out this Apple article -> iTunes: Specific update-and-restore error messages and advanced troubleshooting
Errors 3000-3999 (3002, 3004, 3013, 3014, 3018, 3164, 3194, and so on): Error codes in the 3000 range generally mean that iTunes cannot contact the update server (gs.apple.com)  on ports 80 or 443. This may be because out-of-date or incorrectly configured security or firewall software is interfering, an old version of iTunes is installed, an entry in your hosts file redirecting requests to gs.apple.com (see error 1004 above), or because of your Internet proxy settings.  If you are using a proxy, try without using one or with a known-good network.  If that does not resolve the issue, follow iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software issues. Error 3014 may indicate that you need to free up more disk space on the computer before trying to restore again. Error 3194 most likely indicates you do not have the latest version of iTunes installed Update to the latest version of iTunes.
From the failed connection attempts in your iTunes diagnostics and the connection related tips in the article, it sounds like you should look at the security software on your computer and the hosts file.

  • Exclamation Point Error Message - Unable to Update or Restore

I have tried everything to get my mini to work. I keep getting the error icon of the exclamation point & folder. I've gone through all the troubleshooting tips posted for this error message but they don't work. I've "updated" and "restored" my ipod and as soon as I disconnect to go plug it in the wall per the instructions that same error message comes up, then comes up again after the apple logo about 17 seconds after I plug it in.
I've tried going to disk mode. I've tried everything. Sometimes it will start copying files, but then I get the message "Disk could not be read from or written to". I've gone through the troubleshooting tips for that message (e.g., updated USB settings, disabled spam killer) and it still doesn't work. Maybe I have incompatible files, but how do I know?
Also, even after updating and restoring it still comes up saying I have version 2.0, which isn't the most current, so the updating isn't working properly. I've been without my iPod for over a month trying to resolve this and it's driving me crazy. Please help!

    sirjames,
Here is a pretty comprehensive post about the sad iPod icon and folder ! Be aware that it's quite involved and contains some info that will almost certainly void the warranty. If your iPod is still within the warranty period, you should use that option first.
