  • Cannot change preferences

I have got the iDVD 7.0.2 but cannot change the preferences. I open the programme but the preferences option seems unavailable (Preferences is written with faded letters).
How can I access the preferences?

Log into another account on your Mac and see if you can get iDVD to open and run there. If not then a reinstall of iDVD from the disk it came on is in order. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iDVD" in the file name that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder. Also delete the preference file. Then reinstall iDVD and run the latest updaters followed by a repair of disk permissions.
If iDVD runs in the other account then there's something in your primary account that is the culprit. It could be a preference file other than iDVD's. Here's how to check it out:
    Trouble Shooting Preferences
Go to HD/Users/Your_name/Library. Move the Preferences folder (in its entirety) to the Desktop and make a second copy of it so you have Copy A and B. Now try the the process again and determine if problem is fixed.
If the problem IS fixed, then go to the new Prefs folder that the OS will have created and open it up.
Open Copy B on the Desktop and select all of the items inside. Drag them into the open new library folder. When the Copy window comes up check the Apply to All check box and then click on the Don't Replace button as seen here. That will keep the new files created and bring back all of the others.
If the problem is NOT fixed, trash the new Prefs folder and move the intact Copy A folder back to the Library folder .

I've had very little trouble in two years. And now I do like Windows 7 but also eager for the RC.
I've been using the latest Nvidia. There is a method to the madness of how to uninstall/delete and install graphics drivers, or madness in the method. The W7 drivers are easier.
Nope. Something else. More sensitive to disk errors. You aren't running a program to boost fans. Something.
And some AV software is more prone to causing trouble. But all you need is a good AV/malware program, and even Norton AV 2009 is acceptable, or Avast or one of the others.

  • IMessage "Preferences" unavailable

    Hello -
I have had my MacBook Pro for over a year and a half. I bought my MacBook in December of 2012.
My problem here deals with the Messages app included in the OS software.
At first I was able to log on and set up my Apple ID with no problem. Soon after, I was able to send messages to my friends. There were no problems.
After I upgraded to the Mavericks OS (I bought the MacBook under the Mountain Lion OS) the Messages app was not functional at all.
Instead of trying to describe what is going on, I will add a picture to show you my problem:
I am no longer able to click on the 'Preferences' or 'Add Account' options. The Messages app is therefore useless, and I would really like to find out if there is a solution to this.
I have read online the whole sending the 'com.apple.iChar.plist' file to the trash, but after many attempts the Messages app won't let me add an account or access the preferences option.
Is there anything I can do?
    Thanks

    Hi,
From Lion upwards a Reinstall is the CMD + R at Restart and downloading the OS and the Apps that come with it again.
It will install this and not touch your Users Folder(s)
Before this (iChat 5 and Earlier) can be Reinstalled from the Install Disks.

  • Options unavailable in Network Preference

In the Network preference there is a button for Options... next to "show airport status in menu bar". When I click it , I don't get any choices for the options button

Hmmm. I'm not sure what else to suggest that you try here. I'm surprised that reapplying the combo update didn't fix you up. You are obviously connecting wirelessly to the internet but just can't see the "options" items, right?
At this point, I've only got one idea to suggest you try, and you probably aren't gonna like it. But unless some other folks chime in here with some ideas, what would you think about pulling out your original Tiger installer DVD, doing an "archive and install" that saves the previous 10.4.11 system in an "unblessed" folder and puts you back to 10.4.0 with a new 10.4.0 system folder, then reapplying the 10.4.11 combo update, then running software update to pick up any security patches? Yeah, I know, it sounds like a real pain in the rear end....

  • Login Options - Display login window as: preference unavailable

    Hi:
I apologise if this topic has been posted before, but I've been searching the web and these forums for awhile now and nothing similar has come up:
Running 10.5.8, I set the preference for "Display login window as:" to list of users. Everything was working as I expected, until I hooked my computer up to my school's OS X network and now all I get is the regular login/password screen. When I go back to the Login Options prefpane, "Display login window as:" is now greyed out and I can't change anything.
    Any ideas about what happened?
    Thanks

Have you tried returning to the school and connecting to the network since your settings changed? I would log into that network again and see if the box is accessible when you are logged in. (If it works, clamp the padlock on that setting.) If that doesn't help, in your shoes my next step would be finding the network administrator for the school and see if they might have a suggestion.
Caveat: I am new to Leopard and have not been in your situation. But so far nobody has given you any suggestions, and mine won't make things worse.
Good luck, and please post back with an update.

  • Ethernet is unavailable, according to an network preferences pane.

I have been trying to connect my iMac to a NETGEAR wireless router by ethernet. I have used the internet connection wizard in OS 9.2.2 to configure the settings, but when I launch a pane describing the connection settings, a message comes up saying ethernet is not available. I have attempted to check to see if Apple Talk is trying to use it, but couldn't open Apple Talk.
The light on the router lights up as green (indicating 100 Mbps connection active) but the iMac won't connect. I can't recall whether the iMac shows up when I view the router settings via my Macbook, but I will post more details soon, after attempting again.
The strange thing is, that many months ago my mum and I took it to the Apple Store in Bluewater, where I believe it connected to their network quite happily, using ethernet of course. I believe there is no problem with the cable or the router, as they both function fine with my Macbook, and my mum's.
We need the iMac for OS 9 applications, and I wish to upgrade it to OS X 10.3, but wanted to check that the firmware is sufficiently updated first.

There are situations where an older Mac needs to use a crossover Ethernet cable. A normal router to computer connection should not, but I don't know your exact setup.
I believe there is no problem with the cable or the router, as they both function fine with my Macbook
More recent Macs switch their Ethernet port automatically.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2274
As a test of the old iMac's Ethernet port, you can connect it directly to the MacBooks Ethernet port with a normal Ethernet cable. Turn ON file sharing on the MacBook (in System Preferences Sharing pane) and try to connect from the iMac to the MacBook. For Mac OS 9, use Network Browser under the Apple menu, and enter the MacBook's specific IP address.

  • Cannot download my 15 available downloads, error says store is temp unavail

I reported the problem through iTunes around 12/5 and they replied once about 8 days ago with a standard boiler plate reply, telling me to do several things that I had already done. I wrote back with more details and got no reply, and then I wrote back a couple more times - but it's almost like Apple is ignoring me now. Even when I opened a new trouble ticket last week by reporting the problem with a different purchase they have not replied in three days. That is not acceptable.
There is no error code number. When I try to check for available downloads I get the error message "Unable to check for available downloads. The iTunes Store is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later." There is no problem with my Comcast cable internet.
The problem started on Saturday 12/5/09 when I bought "Saturday Night Live with Zac Efron" on the Apple TV to watch with my kids. and neither the Apple TV nor my 2 Macs would download without the above error. When I tried to download 11 iphone apps updates on my Macbook Pro later that same day, I got the same error and everything was added to my "Available Downloads" queue for downloading later (the TV show and the 11 app updates). Now 8 days later I am up to 15 available downloads that I cannot get.
I am using Comcast cable internet and have had no disruptions, and it is downloading everything else at 7+ mbps with no problems. I can browse the iTunes Store, listen to previews, and occasionally I can even buy something new and it will often download fine. Prior to Dec 5th can't recall the last time a download from iTunes has failed. Since the 5th, IF the download fails then my "available downloads" queue gets bigger and bigger as the failed download is added to the queue. Any time I go to Itunes > Store > Check for available downloads I get the same message quoted above.
Somehow on Sunday the 6th I was able to download that one Zac Efron TV episode on the Apple TV (the purchase that started it all). I was also able to purchase a new album on my iMac Sunday and that downloaded fine. But when I did an iTunes Plus Upgrade of "Enya A Life in Music" with my iMac on Sunday it failed to download, and it was added to the download queue which wont download and I still can't get it.
In problem solving, I even added my iTunes account to my account on my son's Macbook and authorized it, and it was not able to download any of the "available downloads" by using "Check for Available Downloads". I also checked permissions of the itunes data folder and did the terminal command to change permissions that the apple support site suggested (even though permissions were fine). I even created a new iTunes folder on a new hard disk formatted for Mac, and had iTunes copy everything to the new hard drive (using the APPLE instructions for creating a new iTunes folder via iTunes preferences). I did that because my original iTunes folder was on an external MS DOS FAT format disk, even though that drive has been working fine for 3 years. I have done ALL of the trouble shooting tips that the Apple support site recommended.
Because the problem exists on a fresh macbook and after the trouble shooting, I believe the problem is with my account at iTunes, and I think that I need to have the "available downloads queue" reset to zero, and then have the Enya iTunes Plus upgrade added back in. I have no way to get Apple to do that or anything else for me, despite having spent hundreds of dollars, if not thousands on music, movies and TV Shows. I am baffled by their lack of response to my "Report a Problem".
I don't know what to do. I am now worried that every time I purchase something new, that if it doesn't download that I will never get it. I have some application updates that I can't download because iTunes tells me I "have already purchased this application but have not downloaded it yet." I have too much invested in my library to just go away. Can anyone please help!
(An added note - For many months or even years my iTunes account has always shown that I have 1 available download when I have none, but it has never failed to download purchases that are waiting for me. For instance if I had Greys Anatomy TV Show subscription ready to download the number of available downloads would say "2", and the TV show would download fine and the number of available downloads would drop to "1" again. Thus, I suspect there is a problem with my iTunes account, and not my computers or ATV. I reported this once to Apple and they did nothing about it, and I ignored it since it has never caused a problem.)

This is bad - I have an Apple automated response that they got my report on 12/6, 12/10 and 12/14, and I haven't heard anything from them since the 6th when I got one reply that told me to do things I tried before reporting the problem. Between the 6th and 10th I replied to their response 4 times and they ignored me, forcing me to report a problem with two more items that wont download but getting no response.
How do they get away with this kind of behavior, especially for someone with FIVE Core 2 Duo macs and thousands of dollars of of iTunes store purchases? I'm getting really ******.

  • Connection Failed: The server "name" may not exist or it is unavailable...

So I think I know what caused this problem, but I can't figure out how to make it stop...
When I go to print, if I try to click on the pop-up to change the default printer setting, there's a LONG delay, then I get a dialog that says:
    Connection Failed
The server "name" may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, then try again.
Then there's another delay and I get the message a second time. I can then select any of my printer settings and print fine, it's just an annoying delay if I click on that pop-up accidentally or need to change it.
I have a new iMac and I migrated from my old G5. The "name" of the server it is seeking is my old G5, so that must be in the settings somewhere, but I can't find it. I tried going into the Print & Fax settings in System Preferences, deleting the printer there, and then re-adding, but that didn't clear it up.
Thanks for any insight you can provide!
    --John

Hmm, well, this stopped working again for me. I tried swapping ethernet and re-installing the Airport client update - to no avail. I could always see my Mac shares from PCs though. However, I have (for now) managed to connect to the PC using ip address rather than name even though finder quite clearly sees the name. Does your printer connection work by ip rather than name ? I'm going to play name lookup detective for a bit now - it's some kind of Netbios name lookup issue I guess as I've no local DNS service. resolv.conf is apparently not used so a bit of learning to do! ...
... nmblookup seems to work but nslookup doesn't. Looks like SL connect via Finder isn't using nmblookup properly and I can't see how to make that work. When this gets reported enough it should get a publicised work-round or a fix. If only I can get dig/nslookup to slave out to nmblookup ...must be something I can configure for that ??

  • '"Connection Failed" : The server "rrnas01" may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again' message

'"Connection Failed" : The server "rrnas01" may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again' message keeps displaying whenever I try to open any Adobe CS5 applications (except for Adobe Acrobat Pro). It displays until I click "OK" about 15-20 times or so and then will finally let my program open.
I have tried deleting files within my Library/Preferences folder and turning off/deleting login items within my system preferences as other forums suggested but nothing happened. Spending 3.5 hours on the phone with Adobe and completely uninstalling and then reinstalling the entire CS5 Master Collection didn't work either.
Also, it may be helpful to know that my programs worked fine for about three weeks then when we got internet and changed the password (the join, not the adminstrative password) with the wireless network "ScubaSteve" (which I've used with no problems at my old apartment) it started acting up. I have never seen "rrnas01" before so I don't know at all where it came from. I also installed the free 30 day trial of Suitcase Fusion 3 recently, but thinking that could also be the cause I have uninstalled it, and still no help.
Please help me! And please keep in mind I don't know all the computer lingo that a lot of the people in these forums seem to know. Thanks in advance for ny help you can give me.

It may not be possible .. there is a major bug between Mountain Lion and the TC where the TC disk goes off the radar of the computer.
Lion is also affected but not as badly.
7.6.4 seems worse than earlier firmware.. so back to 7.6.1 or 7.5.2 if that is possible.
Obviously that is not a solution for a later Gen5 TC.
Reset to factory after the firmware downgrade. .use all network names that are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
If the TC is the main router set the dhcp to a very short lease time.. eg 30min.. and see how it goes, or try a longer lease like 99days.
I prefer the very short lease but response has been mixed.
Use ethernet not wireless.. ethernet is always more reliable and stable than wireless.
And last .. a nightly electric timer that powers off every night at midnight for 1min.. would not be the first device we have suggested a fix that amounts to beat the unit to the punch by forcing it to reboot since it is unstable.

  • I can't seem to download anything on my iTunes when I use Check for available downloads. I have preorders that I can't download cos it just says 'iTunes store temporarily unavailable' even tho when I actually go on iTunes itself it work fine..

I've been in contact with Apple support team regarding this issue. I have about 9 items available for download(preorders mostly) but it's not listed under download. When I click on Check for available download, a message with 'iTunes temporarily unavailable' appears but when I go to the iTunes store itself, its working just fine. Apple says its a problem with my computer and given me all sort of ways to rectify the issue and still no hope. Everything else seems to work just fine including the actual iTunes store, wifi syncing and cable syncing etc. Can somebody help me with this if you know how to solve this problem or if you've had the same issue now or before?
