Unicode hex input problem

I have a MBP running Yosemite.  My partner has a MBAir running OSX 10.8.5 (M-Lion?)
He needs to use some medieval characters in his writing as a grad student in ENglish.
On both machines, we installed the Unicde Hex Input source and selected it.
On my machine, I can use the OPTION-KEY + 4-digit-hex-code to produce the characters as desired.
On his machine, with the OPTION-KEY held down, as you type each digit of the hex code, you get a different character, instead of one character after typing the 4-digit code.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Dave

Thanks, Tom -- I'll check it again as soon as I have access to the MBAir, but I'm pretty sure I checked that the U+ input source was selected.
Also, regarding character viewer, even on my own machine (where U+ input works fine) I don't see any of the medieval charcaters in the character viewer, no matter which font (?) I pick from the left-hand list.
For instance, here's a medieval character, produced through the OPTION+ method:  ꝑ (blown up to 18 pts to make it easier to see).  But I can't find it using the character viewer in Latin or character-like symbols. I think I may not understand how to use the character viewer correctly(?)  What is the relationship between the list of symbol-sets (if that's the right word) in the character viewer and the font that's selected in the editor I'm using?
Thanks again,
- dave

  • Setting Unicode Hex Input as default

    Hey. I know most of the unicode character codes I use a lot by heart, such as U+2325 (⌥) and U+2318 (⌘). However, It's a pain to click on the input menu, and switch the input method to Unicode Hex Input overtime I open an application. Or worse, forgetting to, then ending up typing some bull like '™£¡•' instead of what I intended. How can I make my SYSTEM-WIDE 'default' or basic input method STAY at Unicode Hex Input? Or for that matter, anything other than U.S. Extended.

    It seems to have suddenly fixed itself, after wondering about this for years, after that post. I'm starting to wonder if my Mac reads Apple Discussions...

  • Unicode Hex Keyboard

    I have purchased an iPhone app that requires a 'Unicode Hex Keyboard' on my iMac. I have a 'Unicode Keyboard' in the 'International' preferance pane but there is no 'Unicode Hex Keyboard'. The supplier of the app advises that I must install this hex keyboard. My installation CD informs me that all keyboards are loaded at install time however.
    How might I go about installIng this keyboard?
    Thanks in advance for your help.

    I have a 'Unicode Keyboard' in the 'International' preferance pane but there is no 'Unicode Hex Keyboard'.
    That must be the right one. It's really not possible for this to be missing from system prefs/international/input menu. The icon has a little U+ on it I think.
    It is certainly most unusual for anything to require it. Do they tell you what you are supposed to do with it?

  • Solution for terminal input problem

    (my english is bad, sorry)
    Hi, this thread is for programmers who like console applications (ncurses based).
    As you all know, terminal emulators have a big problem with user input. Their input system is good for CLI, but really sucks when using full screen applications like vim, emacs, mc, ncmpc, htop, rtorrent, irssi (I mean all ncurses based or slang based which use cursor movement). Examples of this problem:
    - Ctrl-L and Ctrl-Shift-L generate the same single byte in the terminal; namely 0x0c. They are indistinct.
    - Ctrl-I and Tab generate the same single byte in the terminal; namely 0x09. They are indistinct.
    - UTF-8, Alt+letter, Esc-letter all generate the same bytes in the terminal. E.g. é vs. Alt+C Alt+) vs. Esc C Esc )
    But there is no simple and nice solution. Problems cannot be solved without fixing the terminal itself and without breaking some backward compatibility. But I think a lot of console-addicted programmers want to solve them.
    So, here is my way of solving this problem.
    http://nsf.110mb.com/termbox/termbox-concept.html
    The main idea is to add a new terminal mode called "RAW input". This mode will send special events almost directly from X11 to console application.
    On this page I introduced a simple demo application and an rxvt-unicode-9.02 patch.
    In this version of my hack, echoing in terminal is broken. You can't enable echo with this new mode yet. But I can solve this too.
    It is simple and needs a little bit more hacking of terminal. Terminal should start all input messages with unique escape sequence and when it receives echo of these messages, it should ignore them. But also terminal should send these input messages *with* usual symbols, so they can be echoed.
    So I want to know what do you think about all this.

    I think that you might want to find a more specialized place to get more valuable feedbacks. But also that I never noticed these input problems so it has never bothered me
    Yes, I think I should try usenet news groups
    These input problems are not so big deal, but when you want to use your keyboard at maximum, they kick your ass
    I discovered this problem when I was working on ncurses minimalistic replacement. But in the net there are talks about this too.

  • Acroread 8.x CJK input problem

    See also https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=353251
    CJK input doesnt work right in the English version of
    acroead 8.1.1 or the pre-release version 8.1.2.
    First of all, one needs to set
    export GTK_IM_MODULE=xim
    to make acroread react at all to the hotkey which triggers
    SCIM input (default hotkeys on openSUSE are Shift+Space and Control+Space).
    When GTK_IM_MODULE=scim or GTK_IM_MODULE=scim-bridge, acroread
    wont react to the hotkey which enables SCIM at all.
    With GTK_IM_MODULE=xim, the scim input method *can* be
    enabled by Shift+Space. But it doesnt work right.
    One can see correct Japanese in the popups shown by scim when
    converting phonetics to Chinese characters. But the predit string
    shows garbage which seems to resemble Arabic. And after comitting
    everything typed is converted to question marks (acroread 8.1.1)
    or boxes (acroread 8.1.2).
    I am talking about the *English* versions of acroread here, not
    localized Japanese versions like e.g.
    ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/unix/8.x/8.1.1/jpn
    As it is not nice to have completely packages for each language, I
    hope that the different language versions can be merged into one in
    the long run.
    It would be very nice if there were only one basic version and to
    support other languages one only had to add fonts and translations and
    not exchange the binaries.

    Mike,
    Could you confirm if everything is working fine with the Japanese Reader
    downloaded from the Reader website? That'll be really strange since the Viewer
    binaries should be identical in the English and Japanese versions. The only
    difference in the 2 installers should be in the fonts and the resource
    libraries.

    OK, I tried with the special Japanese version of acroread (8.1.1)
    as well.
    There is no difference in behaviour between the Japanese acroread
    8.1.1 and the English acroread 8.1.1 and the English acroread 8.1.1 as
    far as the input problem reported here is concerned! All of them show
    the problem as reported here.
    But I found that it depends on the locale. If acroead is started
    in ja_JP.UTF-8 locale
    LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8 acroread
    the problem occurs as reported here.
    However, if acroread is started in ja_JP.eucJP locale
    LANG=ja_JP.eucJP acroread
    the Japanese input works fine! Thats the same with the Japanese and
    the English version of acroread.
    As UTF-8 locales are the default nowadays on most Linux distributions,
    it is important that this works not only in legacy locales like
    ja_JP.eucJP but also in ja_JP.UTF-8.

    The screen-shot seems to indicate you are trying to enter japanese characters
    in a standard GTK+ edit field. The core Reader code actually doesn't interact
    much with the control during the process of entry of text.
    Could you try the following -
    1. When the default locale is eucJP, what happens in a standard edit field in
    some other GTK+ app., for instance gtk-demo? If you don't have gtk-demo, you
    could even try the same thing in the Open dialog in the Adobe Reader, where you
    type the file name.
    2. If you don't export GTK_IM_MODULE=xim, can you make the IME appear in some
    other GTK+ app. like the gtk-demo?
    My guess is this (atleast point 1 above) may be a problem with GTK+, though we
    are investigating this at our end as well. Maybe an issue with the fonts that
    get loaded when the locale is UTF-8, vs eucJP. That's the reason, the
    characters loaded from the IME are showing as question marks.

    Gaurav Jain> standard edit field in some other GTK+ app., for instance
    Gaurav Jain> gtk-demo?
    In gtk-demo, Japanese input works both for ja_JP.eucJP locale
    *and* for ja_JP.UTF-8 locale.
    And it works for all values of GTK_IM_MODULE which I tried
    (GTK_IM_MODULE=xim, GTK_IM_MODULE=scim, and GTK_IM_MODULE=scim-bridge.
    Gaurav Jain> If you don't have gtk-demo, you could even try
    Gaurav Jain> the same thing in the Open dialog in the Adobe Reader,
    Gaurav Jain> where you type the file name.
    Japanese input in the Open dialog of the Adobe Reader behaves
    exactly like in the search field of the Adobe Reader:
    - works fine in ja_JP.eucJP locale
    (for all values of GTK_IM_MODULE)
    - does not work in ja_JP.UTF-8 locale
    (not for any of the above mentioned values of GTK_IM_MODULE)
    Gaurav Jain> 2. If you don't export GTK_IM_MODULE=xim, can you make
    Gaurav Jain> the IME appear in some other GTK+ app. like the gtk-demo?
    In gtk-demo the IME appears and works fine.
    In acroread, the IME appears for all values of GTK_IM_MODULE (xim,
    scim, scim-bridge) and input works fine in ja_JP.eucJP locale. In
    ja_JP.UTF-8 locale, the IME appears as well and input seems to be
    possible but the result is garbage as in my screen shot.

    Hello Mike,
    I tried reproducing the bug on SLED 10, openSUSE 10.3, and openSUSE
    11.0(http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.0-Alpha1/iso/cd/openSUSE-11.0-Alpha1-GNO ME-i386.iso)
    but was unable to do so.I could see no difference in the behavior based on
    locale.Also,the problem of garbage predit strings in case of utf8 is not
    reproducible at my end.
    Could you please attach a screenshot of your SCIM setup settings,and the
    download location of openSUSE 11.0.

    I found that the problem occurs *only* with GTK_IM_MODULE=xim,
    contrary to what I wrote in comment #8.
    That was my fault, because I still had
    # Workaround for http://rudin.suse.de:8888/show_bug.cgi?id=85416
    # (see comment #37):
    export GTK_IM_MODULE=xim
    patched into the beginn of the acroread start-script.
    Apparently this is not needed anymore, input using
    GTK_IM_MODULE=scim and GTK_IM_MODULE=scim-bridge seems to
    work fine now in acroread 8.1.2.
    *But* the problem I described here occurs with GTK_IM_MODULE=xim.
    Sanika,
    can you reproduce the problem with GTK_IM_MODULE=xim ?

  • Hex input from string problem

    Hi!
    Whenever I try to input a hex integer by readLine method
    of BufferedReader and parse it I get a NuberFormatException . Please tell me a solution?

    Hi...
    Have you tried using the static method decode in the Integer class?
    I don't know if this is where you're goign with this problem but try this (I assume you read a line, parse it, and then stuff the hex number string you want to decode into a temporary String variable)
    String tempNumber = //your BufferedReader readline stuff here...
    try {
        int hexNumber = Integer.decode (tempNumber);
        //do futher processing here
    catch (NumberFormatException e) {
        System.err.println (e.getMessage ( ))
    }

  • Hex conversion problem... Please help

    Hi all,
    I need to convert a hex character representing a UTF-16 character to a hex string representing a UTF-8 character
    i.e
    String input ="0x0630"; //ARABIC LETTER THAL (UTF-16)
    I want the output to be a hex representation of the same charcter in UTF-8.
    Does anyone know the java code to do this?

    As BIJ001 already implied: There are no "UTF-8 characters" and "UTF-16 characters". There are Unicode characters and their respective UTF-8 and UTF-16 encodings.
    For example:
    "ذ" is the arabic Letter Thal. Its name in the Unicode standard is ARABIC LETTER THAL. Its is the Unicode codepoint (decimal) 1584. This is often written as U+0630 (note that this number is hexadecimal).
    The UTF-16 encoding of this letter is the 16bit word 0x0630 (the UTF-16 encoding of most common characters is identical to its codepoint, but that's not always the case!).
    The UTF-8 encoding of this letter are the two 8bit words 0xD8 0xB0.
    If you have the String "0x0630", then you can split the hexadecimal number from the String, parse it, interpret it as a char, and create a String from it. Then call getBytes("UTF-8") on it and you'll have a byte array containing the UTF-8 encoding of that character.
    [_The Absolute Minimum Every Software Developer Absolutely, Positively Must Know About Unicode and Character Sets (No Excuses!)_|http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/Unicode.html] is a nice explanation as well.

  • Unicode Hex to Char

    Hi there,
    I have an hex variable that I want to move to a Char variable.
    DATA: x_var(255) type X,
          c_var(255).
    MOVE x_var to c_var.
    I normally used the command MOVE, but my application needs to be unicode compliant and I receive a warning saying that those "variables are not mutually convertible in a Unicode program".
    I have tried the STPU1_HEX_TO_CHAR but it expects a C type variable as input so it does not work
    Actually, my c_var variable is the header of a table I have declared as RAW, in case it may give some additional hints
    Thanks for your support

    Hi,
    It depends on how you use the type X variable in your Program.
    The FM mentioned by RAVI are perfect.
    But before using them you need to take two variables of type STRING and XSTRING and proceed because the specifed FM do not accept field types of X and C as parameters.
    Example: DATA: x_var1 type xstring,
                             c_var1 type string.
    x_var1 = x_var.
    call function module pass x_var1 and store result in c_var1.
    c_var = c_var1.
    Thanks.
    Hope this helps you.

  • Unicode I/O problem

    Hi,all
    I want to store some unicode characters in a file and then read it again and insert it to an html file.
    Everything is ok in win me and I can see unicode text properly in a browser but in win2k advanced server everything will be changed to "????????".
    would you pls help me solve my problem?
    many thanks in advance
    Bahram
    Here my code is attached...
    public static void makeBreakFile(String headLine,String img,String body){
    String str="";
    FileOutputStream outStream; // declare a file output object
    PrintStream p; // declare a print stream object
    try{
    FileInputStream fstream=new FileInputStream("./uploadfiles/newstemp.htm");
    InputStreamReader ir = new InputStreamReader(fstream);
    BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(ir);
    outStream = new FileOutputStream("./uploadfiles/breaknews.htm");
    OutputStreamWriter or = new OutputStreamWriter(outStream);
    BufferedWriter out = new BufferedWriter(or);
    //p = new PrintStream( out );
    while ((str=in.readLine())!=null){
    if (str.trim().compareTo("<!--headline part-->")==0){
    out.write(headLine);
    out.newLine();
    else if(str.trim().compareTo("<!--img part-->")==0){
    if (img!=""){
    out.write("<img border=0 src="+img+">");
    out.newLine();
    else if(str.trim().compareTo("<!--body part-->")==0){
    out.write(body);
    out.newLine();
    else{
    out.write(str);
    out.newLine();
    // p.close();
    out.flush();
    in.close();
    out.close();
    catch (Exception e)
    System.err.println("file input error");
    e.printStackTrace();
    }

    I'm not sure, but I think you may need to say somewhere (either when you create your read/writer or when you do that actual read/write) what style your text is. Something like
    File yourFile
    Writer w = new PrintWriter(yourFile,"Unicode");
    'Unicode' like that is obviously not going to work, I bet you need to give it a version standard.
    Check out the java trail for "reading, writing (but not 'rithmatic)" on this site

  • Unicode - Japanese Char problems on EN logon

    Hi Everyone,
    We recently upgraded our system, from a non-unicode to a unicode system.  Whenever i view a SAPscript report using english logon that contains both japanese & english characters in one field, the print preview is ok, displaying correct data in both languages. The problem arises when i try to print the report. All japanese characters are garbled, while all english characters are still ok.
    I tried logging in using japanese language, and printed a japanese report that uses both characters, and everything was ok, in both print preview & hardcopy printout.
    BTW, we're using version 640 for our SAP GUI, with patch level 19.
    Hoping for your inputs. Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
    If your system is unicode enabled, you should use true type fonts in the paragraph format to display the multi language characters. In the japanese language form did you use any special type of font types you use? Normally all the special font types will support english and not all the english fonts will support the local language characters.
    Since the output is printing fine with the Janpanese language there should not be any problem with the printer drivers, otherwise we need to check the drivers also.
    Hope this helps you

  • Batch input problem in SM35

    Dear all,
    I am uploading the bank statements using manual bank statements through Z transaction, Once uploaded system is generating the batch input session for the same.
    When i run the batch input session system not clearing outgoing payment automatically based on the assignment field, as i have alreday mentioned the same assignment while posting the document and in the excel file.
    I am getting the following message while running the batch input session.
    No batch input data for screen SAPDF05X 3100
    Message no. 00344
    Diagnosis
    The transaction sent a screen that was not expected in the batch input session and which therefore could not be supplied with data.
    Possible reasons:
    1. The batch input session was created incorrectly. The sequence of screens was recordly incorrectly.
    2. The transaction behaves differently in background processing in a batch work process than when running in dialog (SY-BATCH is queried and changes the screen sequence).
    3. The transaction has undergone user-specific Customizing and therefore certain screens may be skipped or processed differently, according to the current user. If the person who created a batch input session is not the same as the person now processing it, this problem may occur frequently.
    System Response
    None.
    Procedure
    For 1: Either re-create the session or process it in expert mode. Correct the batch input program.
    For 2. It is very difficult to analyze this problem, particularly in the case that the screen sequence or the display-only options of fields differ according to whether the transaction is being processed in the background or as an online dialog. It could also be that this kind of transaction cannot run with batch input.
    For 3: Have the creator of the session process it. If no error occurs now, then this is a program with user-specific Customizing.
    Please let me know solution for the same.
    Regards,
    Anand

    Hi,
    This may not be a solution but may help you to isolate the problem
    a) Are you able to load the bank statement for other banks without error ?
    b) Try for the same bank in a different system .
    c) If it is working for different bank then check the file format is the same for both the banks.
    d) If it is working in different system check the ABAP code for any changes between the system,
    e) Are you getting this message for all the line items or only for some line items ?

  • Mouse & keyboard input problem.

    Hello there.
    I have recently started using a Mac Mini for music live performance.
    I am using programs like Ableton Live & Apple's MainStage.
    I am experiencing problems with the input coming from the mouse and keyboard. After startup everything works perfectly fine. I am using Apple's Magic Mouse and Apple's wireless bluetooth keyboard now, but I have also experienced the same with a simple cheap usb mouse.
    Let me explain, what happens:
    From time to time, the input coming from both the keyboard and the mouse stops. The keyboards is not responding at all. The mouse can move the coursor around, but the buttons are not responding. When I for example move the coursor on an icon in the dock, the name does not pop up, as it would do normally.
    From that point my rescue is a restart (hard one) or a screen sharing login from another mac on the network to do a normal restart.
    Is anyone experiencing something similar? Any tips to help me out?

    We are running Ableton Live for running backtracks.

  • More Cf + MySQL 5 + Unicode/UTF-8 Problems

    Here is the problem:
    I am using a MySQL database that store data in Unicode/UTF-8
    (the website/database are in Lao).
    Settings:
    CF 7.0.2
    MySQL 5.0.26
    MySQL Defaults: latin1_swedish_ci collation, latin1 encoding
    Database Defaults: utf8_general_ci collation, utf8 encoding
    These are same on my local computer and on the host
    (HostNexus)
    The only difference is that my CF uses
    mysql-connector-java-3.1.10 driver while the host uses MySQL 3.x
    driver (org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver class).
    On my local computer everything works just fine, even without
    any extra CF DSN settings (i.e. connection string and/or JDBC URL
    do not need the useUnicode=true&characterEncoding=UTF-8 strings
    added to show Lao text properly).
    On the host, even with the
    useUnicode=true&characterEncoding=UTF-8 added (I have even
    tried adding
    &connectionCollation=utf8_unicode_ci&characterSetResults=utf8
    to the line as well), I only get ??????? instead of Lao text from
    the db.
    The cfm pages have <cfprocessingdirective> and
    <cfcontent> tags set to utf-8 and also have html <meta>
    set to utf-8. ALl static Lao text in cfm pages shows just fine.
    Is this the problem with the MySQL driver used by the host?
    Has anyone encountered this before? Is there some other setting I
    have to emply with the org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver class on the host?
    Please help!

    Thanks for your reply/comments, Paul!
    I also think it must be the db driver used on the host... I
    just don't understand why the DSN connection string
    (useUnicode=true&characterEncoding=UTF-8 [btw, doesn't really
    matter utf8 or UTF-8 - works with both; I think the proper way
    actually is UTF-8, since that is the encosing's name used in
    Java...]) wouldn't work with it??? I have the hosting tech support
    totally puzzled over this.
    Don't know if you can help any more, but I have added answers
    to your questions in the quoted text below.

    well that's certainly different.
    I mean, they are in Lao language, not that they are hosted in
    Laos.
    > Database Defaults: utf8_general_ci collation, utf8
    encoding
    how was the data entered? how was it uploaded to the host?
    could the data have
    been corrupted loading or uploading to the host?
    The data was entered locally, then dumped into a .sql file using
    utf8 charset and then the dump imported into the db on the host,
    once again with utf8 charset. I know the data in the database is
    correct: when I browse the db tables with phpMyAdmin, all Lao text
    in the db is displayed in proper Lao...

    and does that driver support mysql 5 and/or unicode?
    I am sure it does support MySQL5, as I have other MySQL5
    databases hosted there and they work fine. I am not sure if it
    supports Unicode, though.... I am actually more and more sure it
    does not... The strange this is, I am not able to find the java
    class that driver is stored in to try and test using it on my local
    server... I have asked the host to email me the .jar file they are
    using, but have not heard back from them yet...

    and what happens if you do use those? what locale for the
    local server?
    If I use just that line, nothing changes (apart from the 2 mysql
    variables which then default to uft8 instead of latin1) -
    everything works just fine locally.
    The only difference I have noticed between MySQL setup on my
    local comp and on the host is that on my comp the
    character_set_results var is not set (shows [empty string]), but on
    the host it is set to latin1. When I set it to latin1 on my local
    comp using &characterSetResults=ISO8859_1 in the JDBC URL
    string, I get exactly same problem as on the host: all ???????
    instead of Lao text from db. If it is not set, or set to utf8,
    everything works just fine.
    For some reason, we are unable to make it work on the host:
    whatever you add to the JDBC URL string or enter in the Connection
    String box in CF Admin is simply ignored...
    Do you know if this is a particular problem of the driver
    used on the host?

    <cfcontent> tags set to utf-8

    db driver then.
    I think so too...

  • Convert UTF-8 (Unicode) Hex to Hex Byte Sequence while reading file

    Hi all,
    When java reads a utf-8 character, it does so in hex e.g \x12AB format. How can we read the utf-8 chaacter as a corresponding byte stream (e.g \x0905 is hex for some hindi character (an Indic language) and it's corresponding byte sequence is \xE0\x45\x96).
    can the method to read UTF-8 character byte sequence be used to read any other (other than Utf 8, say some proprietary font) character set's byte sequence?

    First, there's no such thing as a "UTF-8 character". UTF-8 is a character encoding that can be used to encode any character in the Unicode database.
    If you want to read the raw bytes, use an InputStream. If you want to read text that's encoded as UTF-8, wrap the InputStream in an InputStreamReader and specify UTF-8 as the encoding. If the text is in some other encoding, specify that instead of UTF-8 when you construct the InputStreamReader. import java.io.*;
    public class Test
      // DEVANAGARI LETTER A (&#x0905;) in UTF-8 encoding (U+0905)
      static final byte[] source = { (byte)0xE0, (byte)0xA4, (byte)0x85 };
      public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception
        // print raw bytes
        InputStream is = new ByteArrayInputStream(source);
        int read = -1;
        while ((read = is.read()) != -1)
          System.out.printf("0x%02X ", read);
        System.out.println();
        is.reset();
        // print character as Unicode escape
        Reader r = new InputStreamReader(is, "UTF-8");
        while ((read = r.read()) != -1)
          System.out.printf("\\u%04X ", read);
        System.out.println();
        r.close();
    } Does that answer your question?
