UNIX to Automatically Join an Open Network

I am looking for a UNIX command or a preferences file that will let me change a preference to many computers.
What I want to change is in Network Preferences, Airport, click the Options button and next to
"If no recent networks are found:"
I want to change this from "Ask before joining an open network" to Automatically join an open network".
Thanks

Hi James,
I don't use Airport so I can't give you explicit advice. However, info about is often posted here so let me take a shot to get things rolling. A nice utility that Apple provides to make changes to an Airport network interface is
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Apple80211.framework/\
Versions/A/Resources/airport
According to the help printout of that utility, the preference file for it is:
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/\
com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
Note that I've broken both paths into two lines to that the rendering of this thread doesn't get messed up.

  • IPhone 4s won't automatically join known open wi-fi network

I have an iPhone 4s with the latest software update. Under settings>wi-fi>ask to join networks..  It is turned off.
If I am at home , the iPhone 4s will join my secured home network automatically , every time I walk in the door.
But, when I walk into work, it will not AUTOMATICALLY join an open unsecured known network.  I always have to go to settings>wi-fi>and manually touch "linksys" and it will join.
I have ran some tests with my iPhone and iPad side by side at work....
With both devices connected to the open linksys network, I will turn wi-Fi off on both devices, then turn it back on. The iPad will automatically rejoin the linksys open network every time, the iPhone does not automatically join. I always have to select it manually.
I have tried several remedies...  I have selected "forget this network", and then rejoined it.  I have reset my network settings. I have turned the "ask to join networks switch "on and off". And I have done a hard reset on the phone. All to no avail. Any suggestions???

So , I figured out the problem. Somewhere along the lines, I told iPhone to "forget" an unsecurednetwork also named "linksys". Well,  just so happens that the open network at my office that the iPhone wouldn't automatically join was also named "linksys". unfortunately, my iPhone was doing EXACTLY what I told it to do 2 years ago when it kept trying to connect to some other open network also named "linksys".
What I find funny, is that even with a network settings reset on iPhone, it still remembered to "forget" the "linksys" network. But, I found a workaround by going to settings>wifi>other> then typing "linksys" in the network name without a password. Now it "remembers" linksys networks.

  • I updated my software to iOS6 and now my phone won't automatically join known wifi networks even though I have it on.  It goes back to 3G every so often when I'm at home instead of using wifi, and each time I ask to join it asks for my wifi password

I updated my software to iOS6 and now my phone won't automatically join known wifi networks even though I have it on.  It goes back to 3G every so often when I'm at home instead of using wifi, and each time I ask to join it asks for my wifi password

Try this for your home Wi-Fi:
On your iPhone, Settings > Wi-Fi > select your home network > "forget this network"
Power down (unplug) your wireless router
    Restart your iPhone
    Plug in your router
    Re-join that network
I don't know if this simple technique will fix it for good but try it. There is a long thread about this problem here: iOS 6 WiFi Disabled

  • IPhone won't automatically join my home network

My original iPhone (not 3g) won't seem to automatically join my home network. I can only join if I go into network settings and tell it to. It does, however, join other trusted networks that it sees but for some reason, not at home. What's really weird is that my wife has the exact same phone and her's automatically joins without any problem. I've even compared the network settings for both phones and they are exactly the same. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

As a first step, delete this wireless network from your iPhone.
    Go to Settings > Wi-Fi.
Select to view your wireless network settings for this network and at the top, select Forget This Network.
Rejoin the network and test if this resolves the problem.

  • How to automate joining an invisible network?

    Greetings,
Anyone know a way to automate joining a network that isn't visible so I dont have to type the name and password and everytime?
    Thanks

"System Preferences>Network>Advanced. Check the box "Remember networks this computer has joined.""
    That is already checked.
Invisible networks do not show in the AirPort menu.
I have to choose "Join Other Network..." and type in the name and password every time.
That's the purpose on an invisible network. Unless this is YOUR private network and you have to constantly be asked to join it.
Plus open System Preferences->Network pane, the 'Advanced' button. Make sure the name of the invisible network is at the top of the Preferred Networks, if you constantly join that network.

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router. Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

  • IOS devices won't automatically join Airport Express network

I'm at a friends place in New Zealand at the moment. I originally set up their network for them so know all about it. It's very simple. ISP router with wireless turned off. Ethernet cable into an Airport Extreme. That's it. The Airport Extreme is serving all the wireless traffic. They are a Mac only household.
I can get MacBooks to automatically connect when they come in and out of the house or turn wifi off and on but can not get this to work for iOS devices. If I go and manually join to the wireless network it happily joins without asking for a password but it will not auto join. When a device that was previously connected to the network comes back within range it refuses to automatically connect even if it's right next to the Airport. Even after I do join an iOS device to the network if the phone sleeps or autolocks it immediately loses connection again and won't auto join.
I've tried restarting everything including the iOS devices, Airport Extreme and ISP router. Everything is on the latest versions. iOS 8.0.2 for the iOS devices and the Airport Extreme is on 7.6.4. There's nothing else to restart. Any clues anyone?

    Can Anyone help? Apple?

  • Doesn't automatically join my default network after switching to WEP security and 10.9.1 OSX

I needed to change my security settings to work with my Verizon router and Airport for streaming to be WEP.  Ever since I've done that my MacBook Pro can wake up and reconnect to the network bit my iMac cannot, the network needs to be selected.  Both are running 10.9.1 and both use WEP. Can't figure out why that's the case.

I intially had it set to WPA-2, but when I tried setting up Airport Express connected to my AV receiver to stream music, I couldn't set it up.  I needed to switch over to WEP.  I will try it again though and see if Verizon can help.  Thanks Donald Morgan

  • Macbook will not automatically join know networks

After installing Lion mac will not automatically join know wireless networks i have to select it at every power up or wake up

Have you guys tried delting the network from Preferred Networks and then tried joining again ? Make sure the signal strength of the network is between -35 and -70 to be in good range. You can get this info by pressing the Option key and clicking on the network.
What channel is the wireless network on ? If using 5 Ghz, pick channel 36/44/48 and try.
If nothing work's, backup the files in this folder /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and then delete the contents of this folder.
To delete do this in Terminal app:
    sudo rm /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/*.*
Now reboot the machine, join the network and try again.

  • Macbook no longer connects automatically with my home network

When i travel and return home, my macbook no longer will automatically join my home network. Is there a way to make the current network your on a 'trusted' network or a default network to join via airport?
    thanks!

Have you tried adding your home wireless network as a "Preferred Network" in your MacBook's AirPort settings?
    o System Preferences > Network > Show > AirPort

  • Automatically selecting the correct network.

My wife has an G4 iBook. She has a wireless network at work and home. When she turns on her iBook at work, it automatically connects to that network.
At home, the iBook selects our neighbor's network. She has to manually select our home network. We want the iBook to select our home's network not the neighbor's.
What settings do I need to change so it will automatically select the home network not the neighbors, when at home and still automatically select the work network when at work?
    Thank you
    Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

The laptop is running 10.3.9. I do not see a preferred network list. I can select the location Home and select by default join, Home in the menu. This works from home. But when she goes to work the laptop does not automatically join the work network so she has to manually select the work network.
Only one location works automatically, the other one must be selected manually.
    Am I missing something?

  • PB G4 17 doesn't automatically join AirPort network

When I log out my user account or shut down the computer, once I fire it up again I have to manually select the AirPort symbol at the top of the screen (which is now grayed out) and select my household Air Port network. Once I do all is well until the next time I log out or shut down. Normal sleep and screensaver activity don't affect this, only shutdown or user log out.
It didn't used to do this. It started suddenly a few months ago, and I thought the upgrade to Tiger would fix it, but it hasn't.
What gives, and how do I fix it?
    Thanks in advance.
    RWW

Robert, you can try adjusting the Network settings to join automatically.
Open System Preferences. Open Network Settings. You should see Network Status by default. Click the bar stating Network Status and choose AirPort. Make the AirPort Tab is highlighted.
You'll now see your AirPort ID number and a line below it saying
By default, join: and a pop up bar.
Via the pop up bar, make sure you have identified your Network correctly under Preferred networks or even better choose Automatic. Also, choose the Options button at the lower left and make sure the settings are correct for your setup. You should click to select Enable interference robustness this will help with the overall connection too.
    Good luck.
