Unresponsive Keyboard Solved (Fingers Crossed)

Up until 3 days ago I was getting daily weird keyboard behavior where the keyboard would become unresponsive and I would type but nothing would "take". After the security patch I installed 3 days ago I have not had the problem happen once. I have used the computer on battery, woken it from sleep, and everything seems finally to "just work". However, I would be interested in hearing if other folks who installed the latest patch are still having problem. If it starts up again in another week I'll know I was just being a bit premature.
LOL...I thought the problem had returned. I was listening to iTunes and wanted a bit more volume so I hit the Volume "Up" button (F5) and accidently hit the "num lock" button (F6) which disables the alpa keys and leaves only numeric keys as valid.

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The security patch will be free--you can find it by clicking the apple in the upper left corner and then "Software Update". No doubt it is also available on the Apple downloads page.
Because this is the real world, nothing is perfect, including software. As problems surface, Apple puts out patches to fix these problems. It's always a good idea to keep your computer completely up to date, so you want to download these patches when they become available--or at least soon after they do. Occasionally there will be unintended consequences, and a patch might start causing new problems. If it does, it will hit the discussion area very soon.
But try the download and see if this fixes the problem. If not, contact Apple. If you happen to have gotten a faulty keyboard as some people have, it will be replaced under warranty.
Good luck!

  • Why is there no fingers crossed emoji?

Why is there no fingers crossed emoji? My friend sent me a text and it said "fingers crossed" and she likes to use emojis in her writing so I sent her back "There's no emoji for that?" in which she proceeded to go into a deep depression because there was indeed no "fingers crossed" emoji. Im sure there are many ideas for emojis but this one seems to be one that nobody has ever thought about yet it would probably be a great idea to add to the Apple game. If Apple does not feel this necessary to add I will then proceed to asking Android to add it to their keyboard and then they will proceed into "thinking different" from Apple and rise to the top. Thank you for your time and may the odds be ever in my favor. (P.S. I really want this to be a thing)

Send Apple feedback through the official channels.  See the Contact Us link on the bottom of this page.
Threatening Apple with some kind of vague Android threat is ludicrous.
Your friend needs to seek help if she becomes depressed over this.

  • UPGRADED TO 7.2 & STILL WORKING -- KEEPING FINGERS CROSSED!

Just so everyone knows... I just upgraded the other day to iTunes 7.2 and bought an album to test. STILL PLAYING ON THE V3i!! SO FAR SO GOOD -- KEEPING FINGERS CROSSED! THANKS APPLE!!
    Compaq   Windows XP

i've tried disconnecting the X-station and running logic on built in audio but exactly the same happens.
after more messing, i've found that there are a whole load of songs which won't play audio, these are all in one folder and are an album project.
other songs in other foldres seem to play OK.
i haven't made any changes to the folder and am totally confused as to what is happening.
when i open these songs and press play, i get a horrible click or pop but then no audio. however when i press stop i get the reverb tail of an audio track.
i thought i'd finished the album which is why i thought it was safe to install the 7.2 upgrade, however now the artist wants a few changes and i can't do anything at the moment.

Do you get any sound from any sessions other than
    what you've described?
Does this also happen with internal/BuiltIn Audio?

  • Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Just placed my order for a MBP through the Apple Store, it's a CTO, as I changed my ram to 2x512 and my hard disk to a 7200rpm unit. the processor is a 2.0ghz.
I sure hope my unit comes without the inverter/screen buzz and the CPU whine! and oh, no dead pixels too.
I get nightmares after reading the discussion boards. Seems like a huge majority of MBP users are complaining of one thing or another. I would've held my purchase back if it wasn't for the fact that I'm going overseas for my studies in a month's time and I absolutely need a computer by then.
Sigh, keep your fingers crossed for me please!

well i was kinda thinking that with 2x512 sticks, i save a little off the price, and when i need to upgrade, i'll purchase 2 sticks of 1GB ram without apple's premium. at the same time, i could sell off my 2 512 sticks to offset the cost of my 2GB ram modules.
a little troublesome i know. haha

  • Disappearing Cursor & Unresponsive Keyboard  - G4 AGP

    Hello folks-
Ive been using macs off and on for atleast the last decade, so I don't consider myself a "spring chicken" when it comes to Macs, but this problem has me stumped.
    [short backstory]
I bought a used G4 Agp less keyboard and mouse with the intention of migrating from winXP to OS X as my main desktop. It came with a fresh install of 10.4(i updated it to 10.4.6). It has the Ati Rage 128 Pro Vid card, and 512 of Ram. It also has a 40 GB HD (WD) and a Lite-on Cd-R instead of the DVD-ROM. I added a logitech MX310 USB mouse, and a Kensington Keyboard-in-a-box USB off newegg.
When I would boot into 10.4 (and later 10.4.6), when moving the mouse when the Cursor was anything BUT the black arrow, it would result in the Cursor disappearing, and all of the led's on the keyboard lighting up. 9 of 10 times, hiting Caps Lock, tab, or any other key combination (including control flower power) would not register, nor would it alter the solidly lit leds. Occationaly the mouse would return, and the keyboard lights would respond, but the GUI was frozen the way it was before the cursor disappeared and when left alone the fans would NOT go full-bore. This state required a reboot.
When running in safe mode, OSX was rock solid, keyboard and mouse worked amazingly. The whole system was great (minus not having audio). I love widgets. But anyways, after having it up and running a cupple of days, id boot back into normal, and i would be lucky to make it past the login screen (i added another user whilst running down this troubleshooting post at macosxhints.com).
(note: About the only thing i didn't do is try a bog standard apple branded keyboard and mouse, as they are hard to find on short notice 'round these parts.)
Talk about aggravating. I checked the console for anything that looked out of place, and found nothing easly discernable.
I finaly downgraded to my copy of 10.3, in a vein attempt to fix whatever the problem could be (bye widgets...). I did a fresh format and install, and during my first attempt, the cursor disappeared while going over a text field! Yes, even booting from the cd it did it. It might be worth noting that the copy of 9.2 that was installed w/ 10.4 and my copy of 9.1 that i installed with 10.3 work great when booted into from startup disc. I lost my ubuntu live cd, so i am unable to test mouse & keyboard stability in that environment.
I did finaly get a bare bones install of 10.3 on my G4, and much to my chagrin the same behavior continued! Very frustrating! At the moment, my uptime is about a day and counting in safe mode 10.3, and everything is working great.
    [/short backstory]
I've tried every usb mouse I can get my hands on, with or without the keyboard connected, or connected threw the hub on the keyboard, and the disappearing curser & Unresponsive Keyboard continues to happen, and be replicable, as long as im not in safe mode. I verified & repaired the HD before i installed 10.3 (invalid node leaf), and Disc Util said it was good to go. Checked both sticks of ram, and they pased. Re-seated the ram and Video card, and visualy inspected inside the case and everything looks great. Burnt a cd and it worked just fine. the keyboard is brand new and the mx310 is hardly used (but the safe mode stability would negate the posibility of it being the mouse or keyboard hardware failing, right?). Tried every combination in both of the usb ports.
Any insight into this would be greatly appreceated as this problem has me at wits end.
    G4 agp, 9600, 6230cd, SE/30   Mac OS X (10.3)   A few upgrades...

    Good Evening Andrew-
    Good news! (sort of)
I decided to compare which extensions booted in safe, and in "normal". I used "System Profiler>File>Export>RTF" under both boots, I then opend them up on my XP box and compared them side by side. I havn't gotten all the way threw the 200+ pages yet, but, I found one rather strange thing.
In safe mode, none of the ATI extensions load compared to my normal boot, where it was loading the ATIRage128.kext extension. The thing that stood out is that my card is an ATIRage128Pro, and the ATIRagePro.kext was NOT loading (on either boot). Now, im not sure if this would cause the really strange behavior Ive been experiencing.
So, on a whim, I decided to move the ATIRage128.kext to the desktop, to prevent it from being loaded during my normal boot. That leads up to right now.
I've been running solid for an hour and a half. I was able to check my system info for any ATI drivers loaded, and there were none. I then ran threw the things that used to make the mouse disappear and the keyboad light up and lock up and all of that. Everything seems to check out. All of the screen savers work, iTunes works, navigating around the HD.
I am actually typing this post from Safari!
So now what confuses me, is why it wasnt loading the right .kext. I went back into /system/library/extensions/ and i can see ATIRagePro.kext right there.
How can i get it to load the "right" kext, and if i could, what do i stand to gain from having a display extension loaded anyways? Im not sure if I should mark this answered & start another topic about that new question or not.
On a strange side note, I did manage to make Ubuntu freeze while loading a screen saver similar to flurry.
Anyways, thats what I know at the moment.

  • FN - CTRL swap on ThinkPad T400 / T500 keyboard [SOLVED]

    Hi guys.
I've disassembled T500 firmware and found the place where possible to make a patch for FN-CTRL swap.
Now I need testers. If you are interested, then send me request via email ([email protected]).
Just for your information: I've already made such a BIOS mod for the following Lenovo laptops:
    IdeaPad Y550: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-and-U-series-Laptops/FN-CTRL-swap-on-Lenovo-Y550-keyboard-SOLV...
    IdeaPad Y450: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-and-U-series-Laptops/FN-CTRL-swap-on-Lenovo-Y450-keyboard-SOLV...

It wasn't so easy to make CTRL-FN patch for ThinkPads as for IdeaPad laptops. But after three weeks of hard work I place here the final versions for the following ThinkPads:
    R400, T400
    R500
    T400s
    T500, W500
    W700, W700ds
    X61, X61s
You can download these and other CTRL-FN BIOS mods in my topic at notebookreview.com. Also you can post your requests on CTRL-FN BIOS modifications there (http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=474396).
    Disclaimer:
Lenovo has no relation to these BIOS-es. These patches are completely unofficial. They provided "as is" without any warranties from Lenovo. Lenovo has never tested or approved these patches and don't support them. You will be solely responsible for any damage to your computer system or loss of data that results from flashing or using of the patched BIOS.
Use it at your own risk.

  • Which MacBooks had the unresponsive keyboard

Before i buy one on ebay
I need to know which macs had the unresponsive keyboard problem

The basic MacBook1.1 in this auction would require a retail Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD ($20) and an upgrade in RAM to the maxiumum this old 2006 (first edition) model can use, two - 1024MB RAM. Just to start.
    Maximum Memory
    2.0 GB
    Memory Slots
    2 - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM
And that would be it, regarding a hardware upgrade; no newer OS X can be run in it.
While a solid-state drive could make it run faster, there isn't much need to do so, without software and a purpose to upgrade this; basic web browsing and email, and other things would be about it, even with an SSD. For the cost to get and install the SSD, you could be looking for a 2009 MacBook5.2.
And some resellers include the operating system discs for the software they put inside. As well they should, because the disc is part of the license to have and use the software. And this vendor still includes software without the original installers. So, you can't reinstall anything. It ships with Tiger OS X 10.4, but no DVD; there are no current updated web browsers, for that vintage system. And w/1024MB (or 2- 512MB RAM) it would need more. Two matching chips.
    Not recommended IMHO.
    Good luck

  • Unresponsive Keyboard and Trackpad problem AT STARTUP + Sleep problem

When I turn on my computer it boots the OS and everything works except for the trackpad and the keyboard. I wait for about 5-7 minutes and then the trackpad and the keyboard start working.
    Additional problems:
If I try to sleep my computer, the screen turns off, but the computer never stops working, so I have to force it to shut down.
    Temporal Solutions
    1) Boot in safe mode, it solves the trackpad/keyboard problems but not the Sleeping problem
    Attempted fixes
    1) Conencted external keyboard mouse/keyboard. Doesn't work
    2) Reset the battery controller.
    3) Reinstalled 10.6
    4) Installed 10.5
    5) Installed 10.6.3
    Known Stuff:
    1) The trackpad/keyboard are always connected as I can move the mouse and use some gestures with the Better Touch Tool app, and the keyboard works because if I click the Caps Lock key, the small led turns on.
    2) Also, I have the HardwareGrowler app which tells me if hardware gets connected or disconnected and it never tells me anything about the trackpad/keyboard getting disconnected.
    3) The OS is working at startup because apps show stuff and get updated and I can still get growl notifications.
NOTE: This is an intermittent problem, about 1 out of 10 times I turn on the computer I GET the problem.
    Thanks a lot!

I came across a similar issue as the original poster. My trackpad and keyboard are unresponsive for 5 - 7 minutes after startup. I've updated my OS to 10.6.4 twice and it's still happening. I recognized this behavior after the Preferences->Network pane froze while I was trying to remove a VPN setting. Removing /Library/Preferences/SystemConfigurations did not help the problem.
Do any of you have advice on debugging the issue?

  • 3 questions: Shake 2 shuffle; keyboard "response" feature & cross fade????

Is there something I need to do to make the keyboard typing "response" feature activate when I'm typing? I was under the impression that you're supposed to be able to feel something when you're typing. Also, is there something I need to do to make the shuffle feature work when I shake the touch? Nothing seems to happen when I shake it and I can't see what I need to adjust in the setting to make this work. Lastly, how can I set the cross fade feature this new model is supposed to have? Thanks guys!

Cross fade is not the same as gapless...there was always a feature in itunes where you could have the end of the song that was playing slowly decrease in volume and it would "blend" into the next upcoming song whose volume was slowly increasing. They would "fade" into each other. I loved that feature in iTunes, but it wasn't available on my Nano. Now I understand that this feature is available, but I find it hard to beleive they would put it into the Nano and not the touch.
Ah, I got your point! Well, this option is not available on the iPod Touch, nor I'm sure it's also available for the iPod Nano. Who told you that?

I have the latest version on the touch software (I just go the new touch yes-terday). Supposedly whenm you type, you're supposed to be able to "feel" the keyboard resonate under your fingers when you touch the keys. This is not occuring, though and I'm wondering if it's a feature I need to turn on.
Ah, first I thought you were talking about having difficulties to something using the iPod's keyboard!
Now, I understand you're talking about the "Keyboard Clicks", which for at least on iPhone can be activated/de-activated. I don't have the iPod Touch anymore, but search on Settings for a Sound category!

  • Unresponsive keyboard and trackpad on pre-installed yosemite macbook pro mid-2014

    Hi,
I have a brand new MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014). Shipped with Yosemite pre-installed, the version I have is 10.10.1 . I don't have any software installed except Google Chrome, so it is clean/new OS.
I noticed sometimes the keyboard and trackpad become completely unresponsive after waking up the laptop from sleep. Happened several times, the last time it happened I could not reset PRAM or SMC as keyboard was unresponsive even after restarting or shutting down so I had to Re-Install OS.
Right now I have the laptop next to me, again the keyboard and trackpad are unresponsive after wakeup from sleep, and I did SMC reset but did not work. Trying to reset PRAM or go into Recovery mode .. etc, it is not responding to the keyboard, as it is unresponsive at that point as well.
What should I do ? How can I tell if it is Hardware or Software problem ? I ran the apple test diagnostics test and there was no problem reported. And I am not able to install Mavericks because it is shipped with Yosemite pre-installed so it is not allowing me to downgrade.
    thoughts ?

I just noticed that I have the following in the system log, both keyboard and trackpad are completely unresponsive even when shutting down/restart/sleep. I cannot even reset PRAM.
This keeps showing up in the log, not sure what it means.

  • Unresponsive keyboard Windows 7 Boot camp install

Im trying to install Windows 7 onto my mid 2010 MacBook and seem to hit every problem possible.
Now after I partitioned the hard drive and clicked continue, the "Windows is reading files" comes up and eventually an error occurs. "Windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer" on the bottom of the screen I can "ENTER=Continue" or "ESC=Exit" but my keybod is unresponsive and I can't choose either option. Is there a way to restart and boot back to OS X? Please help!!

Ok, I'll try to install not using the boot camp procedure.
    1) I attempted to boot directly from the Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit cd, and all the screen said was "Boot:" and it wouldn't take any input from the keyboard, numbers or letters.
    2) I attemped to boot directly from the Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit cd, and it says "Windows cannot install to the selected location, error 0x80300024. When I attempt to wipe the hard drive from having booted the Windows 7 disc, it errs out with "Failed to create a new partition, error 0800040005"
    3) Frustrated, I booted from an Ubuntu 12.04LTS CD to see if I could install that to the hard drive instead, and it just gives me a blank mauve screen.
Reminder, this is a 2006 Mac Pro. If I had a steady job maybe I'd upgrade to a 2008 Mac Pro, but there's not many IT jobs in northern Indiana.
Maybe I'll try installing Boot Camp again in a couple of days.

  • New P7N SLI Platinum Boot Issue with PS/2 Keyboard [Solved but RAID problem now]

This issue taken me back !!!! Never thought I might face issue with a PS/2 Keyboard.
Here it is.. I just assembled my new system...
    P7N SLI Platinum Motherboard
    E8400 CPU
EVGA 256-P2-N751-TR GeForce 8600 GT Video Card
    Creative Soundblaster Audio Card
So, before I boot, I connected good old PS/2 Keyboard. The POST Screen comes up that says Press DEL to enter BIOS Setup... but then, it reboots.. indefinitely... I have no idea why it does that. However, if I boot the PC with no PS/2 Keyboard connected, POST screen comes up and that's it.. (no reboot). So, you see, I cannot proceed further in anyway.... I cannot go beyond POST without a keyboard, but then with the keyboard it reboots indefinitely... kinda catch 22 situation
Any suggestion / ideas that anyone can offer here???

Hello Folks... it took long time to "solve the issue that had to begin with"....
I purchased a cheapo Celeron processor to get into  the BIOS and update it... but it didn't even work... I couldn't boot at all. So, I called MSI and they asked me to RMA it. They replaced my MOBO with the latest BIOS - which was good news
So, now, I'm able to boot  - good news...
Now, this is an upgrade for me.... from my previous MOBO. My boot drive was RAIDed (RAID 0). So, now, I will have to RAID my drives again and run Win XP repair. I was able to RAID my drives and all good... now, I went into Windows installation and did F6 to install NVIDIA Raid.... but, here is my problem, when the prompt asks me to input the floppy drive, and when I did it.... it re-prompts me to put the floppy drive again... I see that the floppy drive is read... but, for some reason it doesn't detect the files in there properly....  I downloaded nVidia C72+MCP55 SATA RAID / AHCI Driver (For floppy driver) for windows xp 32-bit and copied the sataraid folder contents into the floppy. Now, here I am stuck again....
    Anybody experienced this problem?

  • Intermittent problems: unresponsive keyboard, mouse, USB, etc.

In the last couple weeks I have often been experiencing a wide range of symptoms - wondering if anyone has seen similar or if there is some troubleshooting routine to try. Sometimes, like now, the machine runs fine. When something goes wrong, most commonly the keyboard and mouse will simply stop responding (this includes USB keyboard and mouse as well as the internal keyboard and trackpad), although the display still works and anything running continues to work so I know the machine isn't totally locked up. Sometimes everything freezes up: mouse, keyboard and OS. Another thing that happens sometime is audio playback will not switch from the internal speakers to headphones when an 1/8" phone plug is inserted, audio continues to play through internal speakers. Any one of these problems can be solved by powering off and restarting (which seems to take a really long time usually). It went an entire week without problems but now they are appearing again. Any chance these problems are related? Any idea how to narrow down the cause? thanks for any advice. Dan

I think I figured it out and wanted to record the answer here in the event that anyone else encounters similar symptoms. It seems the culprit was some bad RAM. I've got two sticks and experimented with using just one or both in various slots. Although the available memtest software did not detect any problems, my system has been stable by operating without one of the sticks for quite a while now. Thanks to everyone who wasn't able to solve this problem but at least took a look.

  • Unresponsive keyboard/trackpad and intermittent Bluetooth on MacBook...possible internal USB problem?

I have a mid-2010 polycarbonate/white MacBook (model A1342) running OS X 10.6.8. My machine has been having issues with the internal Bluetooth and keyboard/trackpad randomly ceasing to function.
    Bluetooth issue
As of recently (the past month or two), the Bluetooth adapter will completely disappear and eventually reappear on a random basis. It won't appear at all in System Profiler, and the BT menu says "not available". Also, I have had a few kernel panics recently, all of which were apparently thrown by a Bluetooth process/daemon/driver (unfortunately I forgot which one, and also lost the logs from the panics.)
My system has a Broadcom Bluetooth chip that's part of the AirPort card, but is basically just an internal USB device. The adapter has some sort of integrated USB hub ("BRCM2070 Hub"), which the "Bluetooth Module" device itself is connected to.
Nonetheless, this seems to be some sort of problem on the USB bus. Whenever there is a failure, I will almost always see output in Console showing USB errors (ie errors about "enumerating a USB device", "clearing port power", "setting port power", "getting port status", etc). It will either be on any of the ports of the hub at 0x6600000 (the "BRCM2070 Hub" that "Bluetooth Module" is connected to), or port 6 of the hub at 0x6000000 (BRCM2070's port on the internal bus, which the keyboard/trackpad is also connected to on port 3).
I can post more/longer ones, but here's a somewhat short example of the error messages I might receive:
11/18/12 3:18:36 PM kernel USBF: 7351.492 [0xcf9b300] The IOUSBFamily is having trouble enumerating a USB device that has been plugged in.  It will keep retrying.  (Port 6 of Hub at 0x6000000)

11/18/12 3:20:20 PM kernel USBF: 7456.188 [0x11fb1300] The IOUSBFamily was not able to enumerate a device.
    Keyboard/trackpad issue
There's also an issue where the internal keyboard/trackpad will randomly cease functioning (until I restart), often a couple of times a day as of recently. I've had this issue on rare occasion for a while now, but it's gotten more frequent. And more recently, the caps lock light on the keyboard occasionally turns itself on when I'm away.
Both the internal keyboard/trackpad as well as the Bluetooth "hub"/device are connected to the same USB bus/hub. When the keyboard/trackpad die, I've noticed that there will be very similar messages in Console to those above and usually a Bluetooth failure at the same time. (In some cases, it seems to notice that the keyboard/trackpad isn't responding, then attempts to reset/reinitialize it...ie log below.) What could the root cause be...could it be the USB "root" hub/bus causing one or both of these to fail, or possibly a problematic device causing the other to lose connection? I haven't had issues with USB devices on other buses failing, though (ie no problems with external devices.)
Maybe more out of curiosity than anything else, but I've been poking around for info on what might be going on with the USB (aside from the 0x66 hub repeatedly dropping/reconnecting and etc), but can't find much. There seems to be no documentation about the error codes (ie 0xe00002c7) that the hardware/OS are relaying. I even poked through the source for some of the relevant kexts and some reading on OS X driver/kernel programming too...might as well learn more about the inner workings of OS X
Here's an example of some of the messages that I get about the Keyboard/Trackpad:

    Attempted fixes
Unfortunately, my Macbook isn't under warranty so I'm mostly on my own. First I zapped PRAM, reset SMC, ensured OS updates are installed (still on 10.6.8), and threw out a few drivers/software that were possible troublemakers. Next, I tried running another OS/install to rule out software issues. Accordingly, I found that the BT adapter sometimes disappears on Windows 7 as well (just did a clean install). And finally, I bought a new AirPort/BT card and installed it the other day. That seemed better at first, but I still have the problem of intermittent Bluetooth and keyboard/trackpad.
    Problems/solutions?
What might the issue be, or is there anything that may be worth trying? As I mentioned, I've reset PRAM and SMC, made sure it's not an OS/driver issue (it happens on Win7 too), and replaced the Airport card. The machine does have aftermarket RAM (from OWC, ~2 years old) and SSD (Crucial M4, installed September)...but it seems unlikely that either of these would cause the problem. There haven't been any accidents that would have caused physical or (to my knowledge) electrical damage to it.
I also searched for any occurrences of similar problems, but could not find any that were applicable to the Macbook revision in question. There was a similar keyboard/trackpad issue on older Macbook Pros that was caused by stress on a ribbon cable...but that seems unlikely given the concurrent issues with Bluetooth as well as the different design.
The only thing I can think of next is to possibly replace the cable connecting the Airport card to the logic board, and possibly look at replacing the keyboard/trackpad (topcase). Anyway, I'm worried that it might be a hardware issue with the internal USB controller/hub, which would probably mean that it's unfixable unless I replace the logic board.
Any advice as to which of these might be a potential solution or cause of the problem? Or might I just as well sell it off in its current condition and replace it?
    Thanks all!

Has anyone find a fix for this?  I've been using my Dragon Dictate headset on my MacBook Pro for about a year, and then today, when I plugged it in, I got this:
4/16/14 10:01:04.000 AM kernel[0]: USBF:    47.766    The IOUSBFamily is having trouble enumerating a USB device that has been plugged in.  It will keep retrying.  (Port 1 of Hub at 0x4000000)
4/16/14 10:01:07.000 AM kernel[0]: USBF:    50.269    AppleUSBHubPort::FatalError - Port 1 of Hub at 0x4000000 reported error 0xe00002c7 while doing clearing port power feature
4/16/14 10:01:07.000 AM kernel[0]: USBF:    50.269    The IOUSBFamily was not able to enumerate a device.
Here is what I have tried so far:
    Reset the PRAM
    Reset SMC
Verify disk (there were no problems)
    Repair permissions
Boot with an external USB hard drive (which works fine on the "problem" computer) that contained an old SuperDuper clone of my hard drive from several months ago. I received the same "The IOUSBFamily was not able to enumerate a device" error when I plug in the headset.
Tried to headset on another computer, and it worked fine.
Plug in an external USB keyboard into the problem computer, and it works fine.
All of this would lead me to conclude that it is a hardware problem. But it seems that if it were a hardware problem, the external USB keyboard and external USB hard drive would not work (which they do). If the problem were with the headset, it wouldn't work on another computer, but it does.  So I'm wondering if it's some sort of firmware issue…???????  URG!!!!!!

  • [SOLVED] mingw32 cross compile won't link with static libraries

    Hi all,
I'm trying to cross compile an app I have written to i486-mingw32.  I'm running Arch 64-bit (under which it compiles fine natively), and I have installed the mingw32 binaries along with mingw32-boost-static from AUR.
All seems well, but unfortunately when I cross compile my code libtool refuses to link to the static Boost libraries:
*** Warning: Trying to link with static lib archive /usr/i486-mingw32/lib/libboost_filesystem-mt-s.a.
*** I have the capability to make that library automatically link in when
*** you link to this library. But I can only do this if you have a
*** shared version of the library, which you do not appear to have
*** because the file extensions .a of this argument makes me believe
*** that it is just a static archive that I should not use here.
This then leads to undefined references as the library is not linked in.  But as I *want* the static version of the library, does anyone know how to tell libtool to accept the .a file and link it?

Just to follow up on this, I discovered the problem.  It turns out libtool was doing the correct thing, and refusing to link the static library in with the shared one (otherwise later this could result in something being defined multiple times.)  The undefined references were unrelated to the error above, and the code that was causing them (in a different Boost header file) could be easily #defined out.
When the time came to link the actual executables, libtool did include all the necessary libraries and everything worked as it should!
