Unresponsive keyboard/trackpad and intermittent Bluetooth on MacBook...possible internal USB problem?

I have a mid-2010 polycarbonate/white MacBook (model A1342) running OS X 10.6.8. My machine has been having issues with the internal Bluetooth and keyboard/trackpad randomly ceasing to function.
Bluetooth issue
As of recently (the past month or two), the Bluetooth adapter will completely disappear and eventually reappear on a random basis. It won't appear at all in System Profiler, and the BT menu says "not available". Also, I have had a few kernel panics recently, all of which were apparently thrown by a Bluetooth process/daemon/driver (unfortunately I forgot which one, and also lost the logs from the panics.)
My system has a Broadcom Bluetooth chip that's part of the AirPort card, but is basically just an internal USB device. The adapter has some sort of integrated USB hub ("BRCM2070 Hub"), which the "Bluetooth Module" device itself is connected to.
Nonetheless, this seems to be some sort of problem on the USB bus. Whenever there is a failure, I will almost always see output in Console showing USB errors (ie errors about "enumerating a USB device", "clearing port power", "setting port power", "getting port status", etc). It will either be on any of the ports of the hub at 0x6600000 (the "BRCM2070 Hub" that "Bluetooth Module" is connected to), or port 6 of the hub at 0x6000000 (BRCM2070's port on the internal bus, which the keyboard/trackpad is also connected to on port 3).
I can post more/longer ones, but here's a somewhat short example of the error messages I might receive:
11/18/12 3:18:36 PM kernel USBF: 7351.492 [0xcf9b300] The IOUSBFamily is having trouble enumerating a USB device that has been plugged in.  It will keep retrying.  (Port 6 of Hub at 0x6000000)

11/18/12 3:20:20 PM kernel USBF: 7456.188 [0x11fb1300] The IOUSBFamily was not able to enumerate a device.
Keyboard/trackpad issue
There's also an issue where the internal keyboard/trackpad will randomly cease functioning (until I restart), often a couple of times a day as of recently. I've had this issue on rare occasion for a while now, but it's gotten more frequent. And more recently, the caps lock light on the keyboard occasionally turns itself on when I'm away.
Both the internal keyboard/trackpad as well as the Bluetooth "hub"/device are connected to the same USB bus/hub. When the keyboard/trackpad die, I've noticed that there will be very similar messages in Console to those above and usually a Bluetooth failure at the same time. (In some cases, it seems to notice that the keyboard/trackpad isn't responding, then attempts to reset/reinitialize it...ie log below.) What could the root cause be...could it be the USB "root" hub/bus causing one or both of these to fail, or possibly a problematic device causing the other to lose connection? I haven't had issues with USB devices on other buses failing, though (ie no problems with external devices.)
Maybe more out of curiosity than anything else, but I've been poking around for info on what might be going on with the USB (aside from the 0x66 hub repeatedly dropping/reconnecting and etc), but can't find much. There seems to be no documentation about the error codes (ie 0xe00002c7) that the hardware/OS are relaying. I even poked through the source for some of the relevant kexts and some reading on OS X driver/kernel programming too...might as well learn more about the inner workings of OS X
Here's an example of some of the messages that I get about the Keyboard/Trackpad:
11/21/12 2:57:22 AM kernel USBF: 1439.228 IOUSBHIDDriver(AppleUSBMultitouchDriver)[0xd1ff000]: Detected an kIONotResponding error but still connected. Resetting port

Attempted fixes
Unfortunately, my Macbook isn't under warranty so I'm mostly on my own. First I zapped PRAM, reset SMC, ensured OS updates are installed (still on 10.6.8), and threw out a few drivers/software that were possible troublemakers. Next, I tried running another OS/install to rule out software issues. Accordingly, I found that the BT adapter sometimes disappears on Windows 7 as well (just did a clean install). And finally, I bought a new AirPort/BT card and installed it the other day. That seemed better at first, but I still have the problem of intermittent Bluetooth and keyboard/trackpad.
Problems/solutions?
What might the issue be, or is there anything that may be worth trying? As I mentioned, I've reset PRAM and SMC, made sure it's not an OS/driver issue (it happens on Win7 too), and replaced the Airport card. The machine does have aftermarket RAM (from OWC, ~2 years old) and SSD (Crucial M4, installed September)...but it seems unlikely that either of these would cause the problem. There haven't been any accidents that would have caused physical or (to my knowledge) electrical damage to it.
I also searched for any occurrences of similar problems, but could not find any that were applicable to the Macbook revision in question. There was a similar keyboard/trackpad issue on older Macbook Pros that was caused by stress on a ribbon cable...but that seems unlikely given the concurrent issues with Bluetooth as well as the different design.
The only thing I can think of next is to possibly replace the cable connecting the Airport card to the logic board, and possibly look at replacing the keyboard/trackpad (topcase). Anyway, I'm worried that it might be a hardware issue with the internal USB controller/hub, which would probably mean that it's unfixable unless I replace the logic board.
Any advice as to which of these might be a potential solution or cause of the problem? Or might I just as well sell it off in its current condition and replace it?
Thanks all!

Has anyone find a fix for this?  I've been using my Dragon Dictate headset on my MacBook Pro for about a year, and then today, when I plugged it in, I got this:
4/16/14 10:01:04.000 AM kernel[0]: USBF:    47.766    The IOUSBFamily is having trouble enumerating a USB device that has been plugged in.  It will keep retrying.  (Port 1 of Hub at 0x4000000)
4/16/14 10:01:07.000 AM kernel[0]: USBF:    50.269    AppleUSBHubPort::FatalError - Port 1 of Hub at 0x4000000 reported error 0xe00002c7 while doing clearing port power feature
4/16/14 10:01:07.000 AM kernel[0]: USBF:    50.269    The IOUSBFamily was not able to enumerate a device.
Here is what I have tried so far:
Reset the PRAM
Reset SMC
Verify disk (there were no problems)
Repair permissions
Boot with an external USB hard drive (which works fine on the "problem" computer) that contained an old SuperDuper clone of my hard drive from several months ago. I received the same "The IOUSBFamily was not able to enumerate a device" error when I plug in the headset.
Tried to headset on another computer, and it worked fine.
Plug in an external USB keyboard into the problem computer, and it works fine.
All of this would lead me to conclude that it is a hardware problem. But it seems that if it were a hardware problem, the external USB keyboard and external USB hard drive would not work (which they do). If the problem were with the headset, it wouldn't work on another computer, but it does.  So I'm wondering if it's some sort of firmware issue…???????  URG!!!!!!

I have just heard that Apple suggests to remove palm rest protector on Macbook Pro Retina.

    Thanks for your reply.
The keyboard protector that I got is Moshi's. They said it's extremely thin, will it be still a problem? Because as I compared with the palm rest protector, it's much thinner.

The second device is a Kinect for Windows (Model 1517). Here it is almost the same. dmesg gives me the following output:

These three lines keep repeating every couple of seconds until I plug it out again. But here I get something in System Report -> USB:

This is still a little strange because there are supposed to be 3 devices (the motor is missing).
So, I haven't yet had the chance to test on other computers but I will try to get my hand on one this weekend. And I will buy an external powered USB-hub to see if it is a power issue, which I doubt because the phone doesn't need that much and the Kinect comes with an external power supply.
Any idea how I can use my hardware? Is there anything more I have to look for? Known bugs? Do you need more information? ANY help is highly appreciated!
    Thank you!

For me the issues are resolved but I guess it won't help you much. Sry.
The HTC One could not properly connect because the USB cable was broken somehow. I bought a new one and it worked ever after. It's crazy because I tried 3 cables before (which I had successfully used with other devices), but they were all very cheap, from the same manufacturer and bought at the same time. Must have been a bad batch or something.
The Kinect was a different story. Here the problem was that the firmware was not compatible with the driver on the MAC. I did some research and since I can't make my own drivers I got myself another Kinect with an older firmware and that resolved this issue.
    Good luck.

  • Macbook Air 2011 USB Problem

Hi, I recently bought a Toshiba portable hard drive that uses usb 3.0. For some reason, my mid-2011 macbook air 13" is unable to connect to the drive with the USB3 to microUSB3 cable. However, the hard drive worked on a late 2010 macbook air 11", other macbooks and pcs using the usb3 cable. The Toshiba portable hard drive did work with my 2011 air with my friend's USB2 to microUSB2 cable so I decided to buy one on Amazon. Unfortunately, the cable that I bought from amazon did not work with my macbook air but it did work with my other pc.
My question is: Does my macbook air have a usb problem and should I go to apple store to get it fixed?
    Thanks!

  • Keyboard, Trackpad, and Bluetooth mouse stop working

My powerbook G4 1.67  keyboard and trackpad stop working after a few minutes of use.  Useing an extermal keyboard or mouse does not help.  the caps lock light does not come on either.  I force quit by holding the power button down. Fails each time

  • Keyboard, trackpad and media bar inop at different times......

I have a HP Pavilion dv7-1264nr That originally came with Windows Vista basic/home...After a clean installation of WIndows Vista Ultimate, the trackpad (touch mouse) and media control (play, pause, mute, forward/back, stop, volume slider) and wireless on off, and "quickplay" touch buttons are inop...They aren't actual "buttons", they're touch buttons, similar to the trackpad. The keyboard is intermittantly inop, although a USB keyboard and mouse work perfectly, and the trackpad (mousing surface) and buttons are alos inop.
Before I get a lot of messages asking to check the connection ribbon, the NUMLOCK light is illuminated, the trackpad on/off indicator lights (and changes color from "white" to amber) and the media bar, near the display illuminates, and just recently, I got the wireless to connect, and the LED changes from blue to amber, and turns off the wireless network card.
Is there a "package" of drivers for the entire "system" that Microsoft doesn't have, and can't search for on-line, that I can download from HP? I assume HP has a driver for the entire "control panel" that Microsoft may view as separate pieces....
I've also noticed that the webcam in the top of the display is not recognized....Possibly another part of the "package" driver I'm lacking?

Has anyone find a fix for this?  I've been using my Dragon Dictate headset on my MacBook Pro for about a year, and then today, when I plugged it in, I got this:

All of this would lead me to conclude that it is a hardware problem. But it seems that if it were a hardware problem, the external USB keyboard and external USB hard drive would not work (which they do). If the problem were with the headset, it wouldn't work on another computer, but it does.  So I'm wondering if it's some sort of firmware issue…???????  URG!!!!!!

  • HP DV7-3085dx won't power up, seems the battery and charging is ok.. possible mother board problem?

Hi I recently received an HP DV7-3085dx from a friend of mine since he hadn't been using it for a while.
So, when I tried to turn it on for the first time, the power button wouldn't work, or the lap top itself wouldn't power on.
When I plug in the charger, AC adapter light turns on, and when I connect the battery, both the battery light and the AC light turns on fine.
However, there's no fan, or any light flashing when I press the power button as if it's dead.
    I've searched and tried:
    1. hard reset - pressing on the power button for a minute without any attachement and so on
    2. reseating ram and CMOS battery
    3. cleaning heatsink and re-applying thermal compound.
    4. tried turning on the laptop without hard drive.
However, none of those would solve the problem.
Could it be the faulty motherboard, fan or heatsink?
Or, does battery light on means the motherboard is safe, at least?
By the way, it seems like the battery charges just fine as after a while on an AC, the battery light turns off(signaling that it's fully charged)

Hello coolhair50, welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you've acquired your Notebook from a friend, that you're trying to get it to turn on and start up. That only the batter and charger appear to be working as the Notebook will not turn on. I will try to assist you with this.
You're on the correct path, the issue does appear to be hardware related from what you've attempted so far. The battery and charger appear to be fine.
What I would suggest starting with is this document: Troubleshooting Black Screen Displays with No Error Messages During Startup or Boot. It will guide you through testing the memory and hard drive. If all of that tests ok, then you're most likely looking at a motherboard issue.
You have a few options at that point. The first would be callling support to see what they could offer. HP Technical Support, North America 1-800-474-6836. For all other regions click here.
The second would depend on your own personal knowledge of Notebooks, but you could use the Maintenance and Service guide to look up possible compatible parts and how to replace them.
Please let me know how everything goes for you.

  • HELP! In middle of upgrade to windows 8 and keyboard/trackpad stopped working!

Hey all, new mac user here. Just bought a new macbook air 13" 2014 model. I succedded in installing windows 7 via bootcamp via a usb drive and was in the middle of installing a downloadable windows 8 upgrade (at a preferences page when they ask you to select your favorite color) when my macbook's keyboard/trackpad stopped functioning. I plugged in a usb mouse and that would not work either. I have absolutely no clue as to what to do next. If I had to install some driver or thing please tell me how to cancel the windows 8 install and return to windows 7. Thanks for all your help strangers

I was not able to find any drivers specifically for the web cam. I did find software to use the camera, but that was all I could find.
However, I do have a question about the Windows 8 upgrade process that was used.
Did you do an in-place upgrade or a clean install of Windows 8?
Go back to device manager. Is there anything here at all in an other category indicating it is having some type of an issue?
There are certain events that will need to happen.
Go to the start screen and search for uninstall a program. Select this option in the settings category.
This should take you to the Desktop app and show the familiar uninstall a program feature from Windows 7.
Select add/remove Windows Components on the left.
Is Framework 3.5 checked here? If not, enable this and install it.
Then, install the HP framework which is needed for some HP programs. This is a Windows 7 installation, but it should go through.
    http://goo.gl/jDI7X
Once that is finished, reboot the system.
    Let me know what happens.

On one, a 2.1Ghz from 2008, no internal keyboard/trackpad is recognized by the Macbook. Its original kb/tp just stopped working one day. I removed the top case and checked the connections, as well as any dust or bent pins in the socket on the logic board, but all seemed ok. Reassembled, but kb/tp still not working. I then replaced the top case with another one that I knew was working, but still no go.
Any ideas? The MB boots fine (even with the original top case installed) and works great with external kb/mouse.
On a second, a 2.16Ghz from 2007, the kb/tp suddenly stopped working one day. I'd opened the MB a couple of times just before, but I'm pretty careful and don't think I broke the cable or anything else. All the pins and the cable seem fine, as does the socket on the logic board. Here too, an external mouse/kb work perfectly.
I tried another working top case and this time it seemed to work okay. But after a day or two, it stopped working too. I then reassembled it, thinking there might be something pushing up on the keyboard, or maybe some screws loose. And once again it seemed to work.
I also noticed something odd: a couple of times at first, when I'd just reassembled the top case, the kb/tp weren't recognized. But then when the MB woke from Sleep, I heard the hard drive and DVD spin up, and suddenly the kb/tp were working again.
Anyway, after a couple of days the kb/tp stopped working again.
Question: how can the kb/tp work for a couple days, then suddenly stop working? If it were broken, wouldn't it always not work?
The 3rd Macbook is a 2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo from early 2007. Its kb/tp stopped working too (unrecognized by system, etc.). I swapped the kb/tp from the 2008 2.1Ghz onto it and this seems to have fixed the problem. It's been a few weeks now and I haven't had any trouble with it.
Question: would swapping in the top cases from different models create any problems? I see that they sometimes aren't perfect fits in terms of looks, but the screws are in the same place and everything installs pretty solidly. IIRC you have to be careful re. mixing top cases with an orange trackpad cable and a silver one, but in my case all of them had silver cables.
This is really getting to be a problem. I've got the 2 fast well-upgraded Core 2 Duo Macbooks sitting here, working perfectly apart from the kb/tp.
    Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Sorry, just wanted to add in concluding that there seem to be 2 different problems.
    1) with the 2.1Ghz from 2008, no working top case seems to work, so it doesn't seem to be a top case problem, but rather a problem with the connection to the logic board or somewhere else.
    2) with the 2.16 from 2007, here it does seem to be a problem with the top case.
Unfortunately I don't have what I know to be a good, working top case to try on the 2.16. I think with all the assembling/disassembling, the semi-decent kb/tp I had may now have problems too.

  • Problems opening and running iTunes on MacBook

I have had some MacBook issues lately. After resetting the PRAM and SMC and repairing Disk Utilities/Permissions, the MacBook seems to be running again, albeit still a little slowly.
But today, I tried to use iTunes to listen to my music, and couldn't get it to open. I tried to open it from the dock multiple times (at least 7 different times), all with the same result. iTunes reports an error/ it crashed, and reports the error to Apple. Any idea what the problem is, and if my music library is alright?
Here is the exact text of the error message:

How did you acquire this game?
The only games that can be run on pre 1.4.5 webOS devices come from the App Catalog. Flash games will not work. To my knowledge, any other game formats will also not work.

  • Keyboard & Trackpad not working but USB are...

    Hi - 2007 white Macbook, 10.6.8...
Today the machine appeared to keep freezing completely... after numerous checks (including booting in 10.5), it transpired it was the keyboard and trackpad that weren't responding, not the OS. I know this because I plugged in a USB keyboard/mouse to check and they work fine.
That said, the onboard keyboard & trackpad do work upon boot up for anything from 1 to 10 minutes. Then they just stop responding and I have to resort back to USB again. I can see others who've had similar problems but I can't find a solution.
It doesn't appear to be a fatel hardware error because they will always work on boot up for a limited time. All updates are applied and disc permissions repaired.
Anyone know how to solve this? Appreciate the help - stars all round, thanks.

It doesn't sound like a fatal hardware issue but I think your Top Case Assembly or the connection cable are going bad. The top case is basically the plate containing your keyboard, trackpad, and power button.
The fact that it works via USB basically confirms that, but there is the outside shot that the connector on the Logic Board could be the problem....
Before you take it to an Apple Store, try to boot it up from your software discs that came with your Mac (disc #1, you can do this by restarting your Mac with the disc in and holding down the C key after the startup chime) and see if the problem occurs. If it does, I would have an Apple Service Provider or an Apple Store replace your Top Case for you.If it's okay on the discs, run your Disk Utility on the software disc and reinstall the OS.
    I hope this helps!
