Unstable USB HDD mounting after 10.9.4 upgrade

Hi,
I've been using an external WD30EZRX on a Macmini for couple of years without trouble and it recently stopped working properly.
It's mounting, I can see it in the Finder, I can list the partition in Disk Utility but it will unmount within a couple of seconds. (no time to list the files in the Finder)
It actually behaves like it has not enough power.
I though it was related to the drive or the enclosure.
I tested it on my MBP, also under 10.9.4, same behaviour.
I got a new enclosure, same behaviour. Though it was the drive.
Tested it on Windows, it works fine and was stable: I could create a partition anc copy/read files on it.
Though I can't assure it 100%, the problem seems to have appeared after my upgrade to 10.9.4.
I haven't been able to find a similar problem listed on google or apple discussions.
Help would be precious.
Cheers

  • External USB drive won't mount after 10.9.5 upgrade

Is anyone else reporting the following issue?  Immediately after installing OS X update 10.9.5 (13F34) on 09/18, my external USB drive (IOMega 1GB OS X Extended FS) used for Time Machine would no longer mount and isn't recognized.  When I look at the drives in finder, it is missing.  However, it does show up under the USB Hi-Speed Bus device tree:

System is Mac-Mini (late 2012), 2.5 Ghz i5, 8GB ram, 500GB local storage, 1TB on second Firewire disk for media, 1TB USB disk for Firewire (PROBLEM)
I have reinstalled the combined 10.9.5 OS upgrade, and verified that the drive works when connected to my other MB Pro (mid-2012 running Yosemite beta 3).  There is no third party software that I'm aware of in use for this drive, as it's only for Time Machine backups.
    Thanks

Is the drive's icon on the desktop (perhaps behind another icon, which is possible if Finder > View > Cleanup is enabled)?
If not, is the box Finder > Preferences > General > External Disks checked?
Is the drive listed in every Finder window's sidebar?
If not, is the box Finder > Preferences > Sidebar > External Disks checked?
Are Time Machine backups to the drive happening on schedule?
If not, does the drive appear in System Preferences > Time Machine > Select Disk?
Can you open /Volumes/Mac-Mini 2/Backups.backupdb using Finder > Go > Go to Folder...?
Does the drive appear in Disk Utility? Is it (or can it be) mounted there?
Have you tried to plug it in to a USB port on the Mini (not a hub) or into a different USB port on the Mini?
Have you tried this: shut down; unplug the drive; boot the Mac; after you have logged in and the Finder is done populating the desktop and menu bar, plug the drive in?

  • Buffalo USB Hard Drive won't mount after 10.4.10 upgrade

After updating to OS X 10.4.10, my Buffalo Drivestation wouldn't mount. My MacBook could see that it was connected in System Profiler, but I couldn't access it. I (rather painfully !) backed out the update and reverted back to 10.4.9. Has anyone else had this problem ? Is there a solution that lets you use 10.4.10 ?

I have the exact same problem! I tried accessing it through my Windows, and it worked, but I have to say this is very disappointing and upsetting.

  • Can't Create USB Recovery Drive after Win 8.1 upgrade on Lenovo Twist

After upgrading to Win 8.1 and trying to create the usb recovery drive, I get this error:
"We can't create a reccovery drive on this PC. Some required files are missing. To trouble shoot problems when your PC starts, use your window installation disk or media"
Can some give me a hint as to how to solve this?Thx.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I contacted Lenovo who sent me out a set of 4 Recovery disks. These disks fixed the problem but it meant wiping out the hard drive and reinstalling very thing from scratch. A new recovery partition is created and the discs reinstalled Win 8 which had to be updated. Then Win 8.1 could be installed. Everything is now working as it should.

  • Z400 Discs with EFI partition not mounting after Win 7 Pro upgrade

HP z400: After a repair/upgrade of Win 7 Pro (64) sp1, any external disc with an EFI partition will not mount.  Drive will be present in BIOS and Disc Management, though without a letter. Unable to assign a drive letter.  All other discs mount correctly.  Drives with EFI partition will mount on other PCs.  All drivers appear to be current and fuctional.

I figured it out... after two weeks of head-scratching, I finally found the cause.
I run MacDrive 8 so i can read discs with HFS+ formatting.  That program needed to be fully uninstalled and re-installed after the upgrade.  I had de-activated it prior to the upgrade, but it needed more than that.  Everything works now as expected.
But wouldn't it be ince if Windows would read mac discs natively?

  • Disk Image won't mount after 10.4.9 upgrade

After I installed the latest update, OSX can't mount the disk images after download anymore! Any explanation folks? :^)
It doesen't necessarily have to do with the update of course, but it is quite likely I think? Grateful for any help!

Choose any .dmg and get info (command-i). Turn the disclosure triangle under "Open With". It should be "DiskImageMounter". If this is not the chosen application follow this path to choose it:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/DiskImageMounter.app.
    Then choose "Change all".
If that isn't it. You may be able to repair this with 10.4.9 PPC Combo Update.
This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It has worked well for many.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
    Let us know.

  • External disk won't mount after 10.5.7 upgrade

    Hi,
I know there's problem with Buffalo external HD; mine is Lexcron 3.5'' external case and it won't mount neither. I tried PRAM restart, and if I go to Disk Utility and try to repair, it gives me the following message:
Verify and Repair volume “Dirty Hary”
** /usr/local/bin/ntfsfix has been disabled because of volume corruption issues.
** If you still want to try fixing your volume, use /usr/local/bin/ntfsfix from the command line...
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
It worked with 10.5.6 and it still works with Win XP (it's NTFS format).
Is there something that I can do?
Will this issue be solved in Snow Leopard?
Thanks in advance for any kind of constructive info (I've already read threads with Buffalo issue, but I didn't find any thread giving a solution).

Thanks for your response, can you provide some more details?
OS X has very limited support for NTFS. you need to repair the drive from windows.
How do I do that? I mean the disk works normally in Win XP and it worked normally in the previous OS X version. Btw. I've also installed NTFS-3D which allowed to write on the disk and search from spotlight (of course when it was mounted).
run chkdsk in windows and see if it finds any errors.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265
it can also be that the problem is caused by ntfs-3g which is known to have a number of bugs. you can try uninstalling it or plugging in the drive in a mac without ntfs-3g installed.
there is no "issue" to solve.
Well if it worked in 10.5.6 and it works in Win XP and it doesn't work in 10.5.7 I am tempted to say 10.5.7 has an issue.
the fact that you have a problem with one drive on your particular system doesn't mean there is a problem with os x in general. an issue is when all or at least many people have a problem, not one.
furthermore, NTFS is a proprietary file system of Microsoft with closely guarded secrets about its inner workings which is why it has very limited support on other types of operating systems. apple is under no obligation to provide ANY support for something like that. programs like NTFS-3g are essentially unauthorized hacks.

  • Mount usb hdd automatically at or better after startup

    Hi,
i wanted to mount my external harddrive shortly after archlinux has booted into GUI so it doesn't slow down the boot process.
I was thinking about something like (sleep 10 && modprobe usb-storage && mount /media/usbhdd) & in rc.local but that didn't work for me.
That's not my only concern though because I can't even get the drive to automatically mount at startup via fstab entry.
I tried this and many variations:
    /dev/disk/by-uuid/DEFC3BD4FC3BA5A5 /media/usbhdd auto rw,user 0 0
Any thoughts on how i get the drive to at least mount at startup via fstab or even better in form of some script shortly after the boot process is almost finished?
    Thanks,
    demian
    Update: Solution is
    (sleep 8 && mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/disk/by-uuid/DEFC3BD4FC3BA5A5 /media/usbhdd) &
or if you have an fstab entry
    (sleep 4 && mount /media/usbhdd) &
    in rc.local

I didn't want to use udev rules because it's a server and i usually don't have switching periphals. I prefer having everything static.
I just tried using a udev rule though and it kinda crashed my system . Guess i made a typo in the .rules file or it simply didn't work with the current udev.
    Anyhow, i found a solution.
    In rc.local:
    (sleep 8 && mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/disk/by-uuid/DEFC3BD4FC3BA5A5 /media/usbhdd) &
Since i have an fstab entry, i now use (sleep 4 && mount /media/usbhdd) &.
I don't know why it didn't work before though, when i tried it with (sleep 10 && modprobe usb-storage && mount /media/usbhdd) &. Probably bad syntax or because of the modprobe insertion.
    Anyway thanks guys!

  • [SOLVED] Booting Arch off USB HDD fails - can't mount real root device

I've installed Arch on the internal HDD (sda) of my laptop, and I attempted to install a second copy of Arch on partition sdb3 of an external USB HDD.  sdb3 is a primary partition that I had prepared beforehand with gparted and outfitted with the reiserfs filesystem.  I skipped section 3.2 (manually prepare hard drives) of the Arch installer.  There was no problem with section 3.3 (manually configure filesystems and mountpoints); I put all of / in sdb3.  Installing packages and configuring the system also went without a hitch.
I wanted to boot this new install of Arch via the boot menu of GRUB that was installed in the MBR of sda with my primary install of Arch.  On the new install, I first did go through section 7 (install bootloader), thinking I would want to install GRUB in the root sector of partition sdb3 (not in the MBR of sdb where the GRUB of MintKDE resides, a boot menu that I want to keep) but that failed, so I then picked "no bootloader to be installed".  With that I exited the new install, since it appeared to have gone to completion.
I then copied the appropriate stanza in the /boot/grub/menu.lst of this new Arch install to the /boot/grub/menu.lst of my primary Arch install on the internal HDD of my laptop.
    This stanza reads as follows:
    # (3) Arch Linux on WDPP60 blue (sdb3)
title Arch Linux on WDPP60 blue (sdb3)
    root (hd1,2)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/191cc027-43ce-443b-8846-f265d60555ec ro
    initrd /boot/kernel26.img
However, I'm not able to boot the new Arch install when I pick this entry from the GRUB menu list.  The new install starts booting, finds sda but not sdb and stops with the following errors, dropping me to a recovery shell:
Root device /dev/disk/by-uuid... doesn't exist. Attempting to create it.
ERROR: Unable to determine major/minor number of root device '/dev/disk/by-uuid...'
mounting /dev/disk/by-uuid... on /new_root failed: No such file ...
ERROR: Failed to mount the real root device.
Running "mount -t reiserfs /dev/sdb3 /new_root" at the ramfs prompt also fails.
I've tried a number of edits of the menu.lst stanza from the grub> command prompt, such as adding rootfstype=reiserfs, replacing root=/dev/disk/by-uuid..etc. with root=/dev/sdb3 (booting then fails with "/dev/sdb3  No such file"), using "initrd /boot/kernel26-fallback.img" etc., but booting always fails at the same stage with equivalent error messages.
I have no trouble booting half a dozen other Linux/BSD distros that reside on two different external USB HDD's by the same method, i.e. choosing an entry from the GRUB boot menu of my primary Arch install, after I placed the appropriate stanza in its /boot/grub/menu.lst.
How can I get this new Arch install to boot?

Yes, this was in fact the solution.  I stumbled upon it in this thread:
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=65844
When one wants to boot from a USB mass storage device, the initrd needs to include the modules for accessing USB devices, and in Arch this is accomplished by adding "usb" to the HOOKS array.  I simply reinstalled Arch to the USB HDD and in the system configuration step now edited /etc/mkinitcpio.conf by adding the "usb" item.  Adding "rootdelay=10" and/or "rootfstype=reiserfs" to the kernel line in the appropriate stanza in Arch's /boot/grub/menu.lst wasn't necessary in this case.  I left the stanza exactly as I posted it above.
    Thanks for your input.

  • External USB HDD not mounting

I have a 500GB USB external that has decided to stop mounting on my desktop. I believe the drive is fine, as it will mount on my girlfriend's PC and the files are still on it. A different external HDD mounts just fine.
A few days ago I had trouble unmounting the HDD and also ejecting a DVD. I believe this happened after doing the SuperDrive update, but I am not positive. Also, the upgrade from 10.4.9 to 10.4.10 happened in the past couple of days.
I need this drive to store some HD video (I know USB 2.0 is not the best choice for this).
    MacBook Pro C2D 2.33 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Hello! "A few days ago I had trouble unmounting the HDD"?? If you forced a dismount by removing the cable or turning the drive off when it didn't dismount the directory is probably damaged and DiskWarrior is the best at such problems. If the drive is formatted as Fat32 (which it probably is since you are using it with your girlfriend's pc) try connecting it to the pc and using the disk checker on the pc to repair the drive. Tom

  • External USB drive partition not mounting after upgrade to 10.6.6

    Hello,
I have a Mac Mini and have an external HDD (Seagate GoFlex Desk) setup with two partitions with "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" format. After the recent OS upgrade, only one partition mounts. I have tried to verify/repair from DiskUtility and it shows all green over there. It just fails to mount. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi,
I have the same symptoms : external HD with 2 partitions. Only one mounts.
I can mount the other one in disk utility and access files in terminal. But the partition doesn't show in Finder or any apps.

  • 160 GB external USB HDD won't mount in 10.4.9; does in 10.4.0

I'm using a Beige G3 (though I don't think the model is the issue).
I know there's nothing wrong with the drive whatsoever, because it mounts on PCs, and it mounts when booted from both other hard drives on the system, on Mac OS 9.2.2 and Mac OS 10.4.0.
I know it used to mount on 10.4.9, too. I thought maybe when I installed a 4-port USB 2 card things would resolve, but they haven't.... so I expect it's a driver (extension) issue.
I deleted a bunch of extensions a while back that I was sure I didn't need... I suppose it's possible I deleted one vital for USB HDD support on the HDD using 10.4.9, only I don't know which it would be... things were self-explanatory in the days of OS 9, not so much with OS X, it would seem.
I didn't notice it until fairly recently since I'd been networking to the external HDD via another computer as the built-in 10BT was sadly faster than the USB 1.1 card I had installed prior.
Anyway.... since I assume this is an extensions problem (it says when I turn on the drive that a certain extension is missing, but I can't remember which), can anyone tell me what particular extension it is that enables USB Hard Drives?
By the way, USB flash drives mount and run at USB 2 speeds just fine. Thanks.

It's an adaptec card, but that's actually not the issue; it stopped working on the old USB card where it'd worked just fine before, whilst still working when I booted into 10.4.0.
Once upon a time it was working fine on both 10.4.9 and 10.4.0.
It now says "AppleXsanFilter.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used" when I start up the drive. It knows it's there, it just can't access it. It then says "device was improperly removed" when I shut off the HDD.

  • Dynadock Universal USB 3.0 Docking Station: no autoconnect of USB-HDD after Win8 power-up

    Hello,
    I've recently obtained a Dell XPS-12 which only has a SSD-HDD.
In order to overcome the limitations in terms of available connections I bought a Dynadock which works fine so far.
I want to use the Dynadock in a configuration where it is the only device connected to the laptop and all peripherals are connected to the dynadock.
If I connect a USB-HDD to the dynadock I so far did not manage to have the HDD reliably connected to the laptop after power-up, sometimes it works, sometimes I need to unplug the HDD.
I did not find a sequence of powering up laptop/dynadock that does the job.
    Any ideas?
    Best regards
    Tim Tom

Did you ever resolve this issue, because I am having exactly the same issue!  Thanks!

  • USB drives not mounting after sleep

I've started to experience a frustrating problem whereby any connected USB drive fails to mount after the Mac has been to sleep. Rather alarmingly I get an error message saying "disk not ejected properly"
The set-up I have is two USB drives connected to my early 2011 MacBook Pro via a D-Link mains powered USB hub. I'd planned to have the Mac wake up at 2am for SuperDuper to perform a backup but it's proving impossible as the drive is never available and I have to do a restart before the Mac sees it again.
I've tried a few solutions I've seen online such as installing Jettison (didn't work) and making sure Spotlight isn't indexing the drives (didn't work either).
    Can anyone suggest anything else?
    THANKS

You can boot OS X from USB2 or FireWire as well as internal drives. There are also two unused SATA ports hidden away inside that OS X can use, but Vista/XP won't see. There is a $24 kit from NewerTech to connect SATA cable, run out PCI slot adapter, and use eSATA shielded cable to a 2-drive enclosure ($67+).
I always boot from an alternate boot drive before ever doing an Mac OS update - repair the drive, do backup, other maintenance. And even sometimes apply the update from there (requires using a standalone downloaded combined update, which is preferred method). Never apply an update w/o a working bootable backup. Something that requires multiple licenses I suspect with XP/Vista.
I have external backup and restore drives for Vista, Mac OS boot drive, 2-drive RAID for Vista, and Vista boot drive.
All of my drives are GUID. Vista is 64-bit, and has some support for EFI (SP1 will bring better support for UEFI).
Disk arbitration has been updated and improved and some products even had to wait for later versions (10.4.8 introduced a number of fixes I understand). I would be more concerned with make of drives and whether they have GUID/GPL or MBR partition tables.
