Unstable Wi-Fi Connection

When I use my iPod touch, sometimes Wi-Fi connection is lost for no obvious reason, even within a very good network. My experience is that the Wi-Fi connection is not as stable as when you use a laptop or whatever. Is that normal with an iPod touch?

It's the software. In OS 2.x.x, WiFi was never an issue on both my 1G and 2G touch. Since 3.x.x, WiFi is sporadic and most certainly doesn't have as strong a reach. It's my understanding Apple is aware of the issue, but I've been waiting since before the last 3.x.x update for a fix. I think so many of us w/ the 2G touch have been waiting so long, we've sort of given up. My kids' 3G touch is the same w/ WiFi strength. It's really sad we've been waiting this long, but in my hope to keep faith w/ Apple, I'll assume they're heavily, heavily testing the next update to OS 3.x.x w/ WiFi to ensure the problem goes away.

  • Iphone 4 running 4.3.5 wifi very unstable/will not connect to network

Hi all iPhone users. Im new to this so please bear with me. I have an iPhone 4 (had for about 1 month or so). I have recently updated to the new 4.3.5 software. Sice then, my wifi seems to be very very unstable. Im only about 10ft from my router and when I go to connect, I get an error saying 'unable to join network'. I previously had an iphone 3gs and that connected fine further away.
When my iphone 4 does connect, the connection lasts about 10-15 secs and then it will not load any web pages although it shows its connected. I have tried all methods on previous threads but nothing seems to work. Ive also tried retting my router and changing the wifi channel to make the signal stronger but nothing seems to work.
Ive seem some threads where people have 'put them in the freezer' but im not willing to do that as the phone is only a month old. Ive tried the network reset, the hard reset, re-installing itunes and trying the update again but it nothing seems to work.
Any help or advise would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi folks,
    SOLVED
iPhone 4 wasn't having any joy (and neither was my new 4s).
Tried turning OFF the security on the router, connecting the iPhones (yep, they connected OK) then turning on the security (WPA2-PSK [AES]) and both iPhones still connected.
So, it looks like this is the way to solve a non-connecting iPhone 4/4s with a Netgear WiFi router.
Hope this helps others with the same problem.
    Regards

  • Unstable Airport Express connection

I have a problem of unstable connection to the Internet via Airport Express and Time Capsule. I have read a number of messages in the Discussions and learnt the signal-to-noise measurement. But, I still cannot resolve my own problem: the wireless connection of my iMac in my study room is unstable. Please help.
I have a 2TB Time Capsule in my bedroom. It connects to the Internet. I have two Airport Express (AX1 and AX2). I placed AX1 in my study room for my iMac. The bedroom and the study room are on the same floor. There is a concrete wall between them. I placed AX2 in the living room downstairs of the study room for my MacBook Pro.
I used Airport Utility 5.5 and found the signal-to-noise values as below:
    Time Capsule has 2 clients.
    AX1: Signal -78dBm. Noise -87dBm. Rate 2. Type 802.11b/g/n.
    AX2: Signal -84. Noise -93. Rate 2. Type 802.11b/g/n.
    AX1 has 2 clients:
Time Capsule: Signal -24. Noise -95. Rate 104. Type Wireless.
    iMac: Signal -63. Noise -93. Rate 117. Type 802.11b/g/n.
    AX2 has 3 clients:
Time Capsule: Signal -24. Noise -95. Rate 52. Type Wireless.
    iPhone: Signal -24. Noise -95. Rate 1. Type 802.11b/g.
MacBook Pro: Signal -52. Noise -88. Rate 145. Type 802.11b/g/n.
Does it mean that AX1 and AX2 receive good signals from Time Capsule (-24-(-95)=71) but Time Capsule receives very poor or no signal from either AX1 or AX2 (-78-(-87)=9 or -84-(-93)=9)?
Airport Utility shows a chart of signal. The signals of iMac and MacBook Pro drop and rise frequently. It drops for 1 or 2 minutes and then rise for 10 or 15 seconds and then drops and rise again. What is the likely cause that drops the signal intermittently?
Finally, my intention is to use AX2 to connect to AX1 instead of Time Capsule. I want AX2 to further extend the network that AX1 has extended. But, it seems that AX2 connects to Time Capsule. I have set Time Capsule as "Create a wireless network" and both AX1 and AX2 as "Extend a wireless network". Is it a correct setting?
    Please help!

The signal and noise values are useful, but what you need to look at is the signal to noise ratio:
    Welcome to the discussion area!
Here is a chart of signal to noise values provided by Tesserax:
    40dB = Excellent
    25dB to 40 dB = Very good
    15dB to 25 dB = Low
    10dB to 15 dB = Very low
5dB to 10 dB = No usable signal
Your measurements indicate that both of your AirPort Express devices are positioned either too far away from the Time Capsule, or there are too many obstructions between the devices that are absorbing the signal strength. Can you try different positions for the AirPort Express to see if you can establish a better signal?
+Finally, my intention is to use AX2 to connect to AX1 instead of Time Capsule. I want AX2 to further extend the network that AX1 has extended.+
As you note, the AX devices both connect to the Time Capsule. Unfortunately, it is not possible to configure AX2 to connect to AX1 using the "extend" setup.
Think of the "extend" setup like a hub and spoke(s) of a wheel. The Time Capsule is the "hub" and the AX devices are at the ends of the spokes. The AX devices communicate only to the Time Capsule, not each other. Is it possible for you to reposition the Time Capsule in a more central location?

  • Unstable BT Infinity connection

I have had this problem for a few months now. Every so often whilst watching a video or online in general, the connection cuts out and becomes unstable. I have contacted BT who have run their tests and apparantly i have a stable connection... which i dont. So the only thing they could do was send a brand new HUB and fiddle with frequency settings, which did nothing.
My set up is router downstairs with powerline adapters connected to the router and my PC upstairs. My PC (wired) loses connection aswell as my mobile phone (wireless). Im stumped as to what it could be. My broadband speeds when connected are really good.. it just cant stay stable.
BT apparantly cant do anything else.. so i have no clue.
Another thing to note is that we have found there to be a noise on the landline also, which they also checked out to be fine, which i know it isnt.
Any advise or ideas would be much appreciated..

  • Unstable Wireless Bridge Connection via 802.11a(Radio 1) of Aironet 1242

    Hi,
I'm going to setup up an AP 1242 in a remote area to support b/g client via a 802.11a bridge link (all using AP 1242).
Before the deployment, I tested the configuration in a lab environment. However, I found the bridge link will come up a while and suddenly gone. Resetting the root AP or the non-root AP cannot bring the connection up again. Sometimes, when I shutdown the b/g radio (radio 0) of the remote AP, the bridge link will be established again. Following is the log from the root AP.
    Thanks!

Thanks dmantill for reminding me to revisit the antenna and related stuff.
As the setup is in a lab environment, the APs are put on a work bench next to each other, therefore, the radio output power was lowered.
After adjusting the output powers, it works as expected.
    Thanks Surendra and dmantill.

  • After 2.0 Upgrade original iPhone WiFi unstable and not connecting

I upgraded my original iPhone (8GB) to OS 2.0. I had some issues getting it upgraded with "problems accessing the iTunes Store" but once thoese resolved seemed ok. Even bought and synced Super Monkeyball.
I now notice that in my home where I have two airports (old G Extreme and a G Express) neither will connect to the iPhone for more than a few seconds and for the most part the phone doesn't see them.
Anyone have this issue and any suggestions for resolving?

Hi Menk - do me a favor will you? Go into Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > and then scroll down to "Calendars". Question: How many sub-functions do you see?
After I did the upgrade, I have two sub-functions. I look at the same path on a 3G iPhone, and see they have three. The 3rd sub-function is "Calendar Type". Do you have that on your upgraded iPhone?
Also, when you are in the Calendar apps, on the top left hand corner. do you have a "Calendar" button? I don't have one after my upgrade but I see that 3G does.
Look forward to hear from you ...

  • Very unstable wireless network connection

I just installed archlinux in my notebook and, unfortunately, as the title says, I'm having a hard time getting my network connection to work properly.I'm getting disconnected every once in a few seconds.
I've already disabled ipv6 but that doens't seem to fix the problem.
Here is the dmesg message I get when it happens:

What's the problem? How to fix it?
By the way, I'm using wpa_supplicant and dhcpcd to connect.

Rebooting and connecting with the wifi-menu did not solve the problem.

  • Unstable airport card connection

Perhaps I have a buffering problem, if I knew what buffering is. My 9.2 iMac with Airport card was set up as the base station for the household iBook and was itself hard-wired to my DSL modem (Qwest ActionTec). Everything worked fine for months. Recently the local mac doctor redid my setup to make both macs wireless, using the modem as the router. The iBook is still functioning as usual, but my iMac is driving me nuts: the Airport status panel indicates that the signal is strong--and then I see "no network selected." So everything I do online is screwy--slow loading, lost data, etc. What can I do except hardwire again? I can't see anyplace on the modem to change channels--can you tell you're dealing with a no-nothing? THANKS!

See my post about using the WaveLan card out of an old graphite "flying saucer" Airport Base Station. My iMac accepted one as an Airport card. The old ABSes are cheap since they don't work with new releases of OS X any more.

  • WMP600N - weak connection and low signal - Windows 7 x64

I bought the WMP600N because Linksys and Microsoft listed it as 'compatible' for Windows 7 x64.
    My experience:
    - unstable and weak connection
    - pings to websites like google.com drops, average: 1 out of 3
    - low signal, on the same spot my three years old HP-laptop with 'a build in wireless card' has full signal strength in Windows 7
    - it works well under Windows XP (32 bit)
I'am convinced that drivers for the WMP600N are not ready for Window 7 x64. Linksys (or Ralink, which developed the chipset), please release a proper driver for the WMP600N!

I'm not sure about you guys, but I use WMP600N and  running Windows 7 64bit without any issues. The driver that I'm using now is Driver Version: 3.0.2.0, Driver Provider: Ralink Techonolgy Corp, Driver Date: 6/19/2009. Here's what I did when I upgrded my wireless adapter. 1. Uninstall the original wireless driver from device manager. 2. Turn off the computer and phisically removed the wireless adapter from my computer. 3. Pop in the new WMP600N and turn on the computer. 4. Windows 7 then automatically detects the new adapter and intall the proper driver for it. Well, that's all I did. The whole process is very simple and straight forward.

your prolbem is not with mirror or home sharing it's with your network being unstable
    test by connecting by ethernet
test by changing wifi channel to another as if other wifi networks near by use the same channel it can cause problems

  • Unstable WiFi on NB200

I have a recently bought NB200. I have 10Mbit Virgin Media (Cable ISP) into my house then to a wireless router. The connection is completely problem free via my iPhone, iPod Touch and other laptop.
However, when connecting via this new nb200 it is unstable. The connection may be fine for hours, or break mutliple times within minutes. When the connection breaks my wireless connection within Windows shows as being fine, with Excellent signal strength.
The only way to repair it is to reboot, or run the Windows Network Diagnostic Utility, which reports that nothing is wrong, but somehow repairs the connection....
Please help as this is driving me crazy. If this cant be resolved the machine will have to be returned I think.

    Hi
Its not easy to say why your WiFi connection is unstable
First of all I would try to update the WLAN driver. Latest version can be found on the Toshiba website if you search for your model (NB200). Download and install it.
Make also sure that your BIOS version is up to date. You can get it on the Toshiba website too. Sometimes I can read here that WLAN connection works stable after such an update.
Last but not least try updating the firmware of your router. I had a similar issue that WLAN connection wasnt stable but after firmware update it was solved. You can get it on the manufactures website.
    Good luck! :)

  • Aggressive Load Balancing = unstable network

Last week we upgraded 26 WLCs 4400 controllers from version 5.2.178 to version 6.0.188.0/6.0.196.0.
Two days after the upgrade, IT-administrators had reported problems with 15 of the WLCs.
    The symptoms was:
    - Problems conntecting to SSIDs
    - Unstable network when connected
    - Clients didnt get a IP-adress
    - Unstable signal strength
After some troubleshooting, it turned out "Aggressive load-balancing" was enabled on the WLCs having these problems.
    Output from one WLC:
    (Cisco Controller) >show load-balancing
    Aggressive Load Balancing........................ Enabled
Aggressive Load Balancing Window................. 0 clients
Aggressive Load Balancing Denial Count........... 3
                                                        Statistics
    Total Denied Count............................... 5873 clients
    Total Denial Sent................................ 14067 messages
Exceeded Denial Max Limit Count.................. 2924 times
None 5G Candidate Count.......................... 8215 times
None 2.4G Candidate Count........................ 2331 times
Yesterday we ran this command on these WLCs:
    config load-balancing aggressive disable
..and the problems now seem to have dissappeared.
Aggressive load-balancing is disabled as default in the newest versions of WLC software, but we have upgraded since version 4.0.155.5 (where I think this was enabled as default), and I guess this setting was enabled because of that.
Some info from cisco.com about aggressive load balancing:
Aggressive load-balancing works at the association phase. If enabled and the conditions to load-balance are met, when a wireless client attempts to associate to a LAP, association response frames are sent to the client with an 802.11 response packet that includes status code 17. This code indicates that the AP is too busy to accept any more associations.
It is the responsibility of the client to honor, process or discard that association response frame with reason code 17. Some clients ignore it, even though it is part of the 802.11 specification. The standard dictates that the client driver must look for another AP to connect to since it receives a "busy" message from the first AP it tries. Many clients do not do this and send the association request again. The client in question is allowed on to the wireless network upon subsequent attempts to associate.
Just wanted to post this in case others are experiencing problems like we did

Tweak your RF. You need to adjust the TX power and the data rates. The reason you have one AP with 9 clients is probably because that AP has the lowest TX power setting like 7-8. Make each AP the same TX power level, depending on how many AP's and how big the room is. You will need to play around with this and the data rates to achieve what you want.
Here is a guide to look at too

  • Access point --- Internet losing connection every 5 minutes....

i have a wrt54g v6 router and a wmp54g both current drivers and firmware from the linksys website. i am frequently losing connection between router and internet. i've lowered my mtu, i've forwarded ports, reinstalled card in all 4 pci slots, i've literally done everything i know possible to do. i sat on the phone for 4 hours waiting on a linksys technician before my phone died friday trying to get ahold of someone for some help. resetting the router doesn't seem to help at all. the connection loss time is random aswell. sometimes it's for minutes sometimes it's for 10 seconds, but when you're playing online games that's all it takes to disconnect you. i've been going absolutely crazy trying to fix this so if anyone has any idea's i would be ever so greatful.
    pc specs
    windows xp pro sp2
    2.0ghz amd 2400+
    nvidia 6600 agp
    1gb corsair pc2700
    160 seagate hd

First off all i don't suggest to play online games on wireless since as we all know wireless is such an unstable media for connection.
Can you tell me the distance between the computer and the router. Also what is in the direct environment of the network.
Are you using a 2.4 GHz cordless phone. This device is can cause intermittent internet connection on wireless networks
we still have to isolate the problem just in case something else is causing your problem.

  • E900 - Internet Connection 3 times lower then direct one

Here is the problem. I use linksys e900 as an ethernet router.
If I connect my computer directly to the ethernet cable (without router) the speed is about 25-26 mbs. All the rest connections through the router give maximum 10 mbs and the speed is unstable. The connection is L2TP, the security is WPA2, the wireless channel is not AUTO.
So the problem with connection is with wifi connection and ethernet cable to router both.
I am sorry for my English (it is not my native language) and I will be pleased if anyone can help.

Hi NoiseInc, try these settings for your wireless configuration.
    Then try to disable QOS.

  • Connection and SMS Problem with Peoples/China Moblie (HK) using  iPhone4s

I just signed up with Peoples/China Mobile (HK) service provider for apparently 2.5G service.
I face the following problems which the technical support of the service provider is unable to resolve and providing me any proper feedback:
    1) SMS / messaging not working.
    - Outgoing SMS all failed.
    - Incoming SMS no issue.
    2) Unstable and bad connection.
    - No service in MTR.
    - Upon coming out from the MTR station or location with no reception/elevator, the search for network is slow and service unattainable. The "No Service" sign on the top left screen remain as it is. You have to either restart the phone and force network search again. Very irritating and fustrating.
    - Network search subsequent to above incidents are very long (5 minutes at least)
    3) Regular service failure for basic phone calls
    - Very unstable throughout the days.
Even the basic phone calls and SMS is  far worse than my previous service plan. I cant even make/receive proper phone calls. SMS/messaging not working at all!!!!
So what is the root cause?
Iphone 4s glitch or bug? Should I send back to Apple?
    or
Problem lies with the Service provider's connection (peoples/china mobile) ? Incompatible phone set versus 2,5G service provider?
    Ah Huat
    Fustrated customer!!

Your issue is more than likely bandwidth related although there is a lot of variables that can cause issues. You can use the free Speed Test app to test your network speed using your iPhone when the problem arises. This could tell you which end the issue is at. It may be anything from older slower wifi routers, slow Internet connection, which your provider may throttle for certain uses, or network congestion in  your area especially if you use cable Internet.
