Unwanted System shutdown after SSH logout

Hi, I am new to the forum and I can'r resolve by myself this problem:
I have a small server where I connect via SSH from internet.
Everything is working ok but I noticed that after the system update via pacman -Syu I have this strange shutdown whenever I logoff from the SSH session.
the system is Linux srv 3.18.6-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Feb 7 08:59:29 CET 2015 i686 GNU/Linux
I looked at the log and the system appears to receive a shutdown command.
Here is the last log extract:
mar 05 17:00:35 srv sshd[368]: Received disconnect from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx: disconnected by user
mar 05 17:00:35 srv sshd[363]: pam_unix(sshd:session): session closed for user xxx

mar 05 17:00:35 srv systemd[366]: pam_unix(systemd-user:session): session closed for user xxx
The system is a server only with remote console, no keyboard, no monitor.
Any idea where to look for to solve these unexpected shutdowns?
Thank you.
Giorgio

Friend, I feel for you. I have the same problem on two PPC machines. I have watched posts about this problem for about a year now, and I have yet to see anyone come close to a fix.
I'm going to tell you how we keep it from happening 97% of the time (on both our machines). It's really weird, but it works. When we're going to shut down, we open a few folders and let the machine calculate the sizes of the items inside. We use the Applications folder and the Utilities folder for this. Once the machine has shown the sizes of the items in the window, we close the window. Then, from the Apple Menu, we choose Shut Down (or Restart, if that's what we're doing). The dialogue window appears, asking to confirm that is what we want to do. Now, WAIT as it counts down. Click "OK" when the countdown hits 55 seconds remaining. I know it sounds goofy, but believe me, it works. If we do not follow this routine, the shutdown or restart will fail and we have to force quit the machine.
Now, we've been doing this for a long time - probably about a year. Since we started having to follow this silliness, we have installed a second hard drive in the desktop machine and also now use a portable FW HD with my laptop. On the laptop, I always eject the external HD before shutdown or restart. On the desktop machine, we simply open at least one big folder (usually Applications on a clone backup partition, and on the other partition just some big folder), let it calculate the sizes of the enclosed items, then close those folders. Following these actions, we use the previously described procedure.
Try it and let me know here if it works for you.
I know it sounds totally insane, but it works. It's a pain to do it every time, but it beats a forced shutdown and the chance of data corruption. I've given up on a solution; we'll probably replace these machines before there's a fix - judging from the lack of success other have with this problem.

  • System Shutdown and User Logout Freeze

Recently my Powerbook 15" G4 (FW800) compute running 10.5.7 has been having issues with both shutting down and switching to a different user from the Finder Apple menu.
You can select "Shutdown" from the Apple Menu and the system appears to close all programs properly including the Finder but my desktop image still appears on the screen and I have to hold down the Power button for about 5-10 seconds to force the computer to turn off.
In addition, if I try to log out of the current user using the Apple menu to try to switch to my other one the system again appears to "hang" with just the desktop image on the screen.
Initially when either of these attempts are being done you can hear disk drive activity but the desktop image stays on the screen even after leaving the computer alone for 10 minutes or more.
I've tried resetting the Parameter Ram at startup and even went as far as trying to reset the PMU by holding down the Open Apple-Control-Shift & Power Button (Apple says to hold down Shift-Control-Option-Power though) and I thought that had fixed the issue but after another reboot the computer is back to just sitting there with the desktop picture on the screen after shutting down.
I've run the computer in "Verbose Mode" and when the computer properly shuts down you can see the desktop photo go away and the verbose mode come up on the screen for a moment before the computer completely shuts down. But recently, after selecting shutdown on the screen, the computer never makes it to the verbose screen meaning "something" is causing it to hang after it closes all the processes but before it gets a chance to get to the verbose screen and close up shop.
Does anyone know of a preference file I can delete or something else I can try to get this computer happy again? Other than the above listed problem the computer works completely fine.
Any suggestions or other people that have had similar experiences are appreciated, thanks!

I have to keep turning on an off the wi-fi connection to connect to my network after system shutdown with mountain lion, I did not have to do this with 10.6.8 before I upgraded, is there a bug fix in the works?

    Many have posted this fix:
Go to System Preferences > Energy Saver > Computer Sleep ... set to anything greater than the 15 min. default setting.

  • After Mavericks installation USB extern hd won't let the system shutdown

after the Mavericks installation my UBS extern hard drive won't let the system shutdown or restart.
If I unmount the USB HD and shutdown from apple menu or keyboard combination(control+eject key) then goes system down but without unmount shows just grey display with cursor and never go out. And the after the key combination control + eject then i can see the login field with restart, shutdown button then i can click shutdown button the system goes down. What do I have to do?

    Bump.
Lots of people are having this issue with no real good answers. I hope apple devs are reading the blogs and get us a fix for this quick. I had this problem after upgrading to mavericks, then I did a clean install to mavericks and still have the same issue. I already miss Steve.

  • Policy Schedule - User Logout or System Shutdown

I'm having issues running inventory on these events. Running the
inventory on "User Logout" runs as per the scheduler but the inventory
doesn't seem to be submitted unless the user actually selected "Log
Off". If I set the policy schedule to "System Shutdown" the inventory
never seems to run as per the scheduler and no inventory data is submitted.
My reasoning for testing inventory on these two events backs into a
recent post I made re: real-time av scanning. Having the inventory run
on startup, which is the current schedule (below normal priority),
generates a large number of file opens/reads (>10000). The real-time av
components on each PC must scan each of the files, which consumes too
much CPU time for too long. This results in delays on login that are
    gaining visibility...
In short, i'm looking for alternatives to running inventory on system
startup that still allow the a current inventory to be maintained.

  • System hangs on reboot/shutdown after kernel upgrades

I've been experiencing the problem that, whenever pacman upgrades the kernel, the system hangs on reboot or shutdown.  It only happens on the first reboot/shutdown after a kernel upgrade.  I've noticed it consistently for a while now.
    To reboot, I issue:
    # reboot
    To shutdown, I issue:
    # shutdown -h now
I should also mention that I typically reboot after kernel upgrades because hotplugged storage devices (USB, SD) fail to be detected unless the system reboots.  That is, devices plugged in during the upgrade remain usable, but plugging in something new appears in /dev.  There may be an obvious reason for it that I'm missing, but it's never bothered me enough to look into it.  Not sure if this and the reboot/shutdown issue are related, though.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

When Apple Hardware Test says there is a problem, there definitely is a problem.
But like many diagnostics, it does not catch everything.
It can increase your confidence that you do not have gross flaws. The Hardware problems that remain may be more subtle ones.

  • System Shutdown

    Hello,
I have an ERP system connected to BW and CRM.
For shutting down the ERP(unix+DB2) what necessary precautions should I take?
What are the generic steps to be followed in the BW and CRM systems, before I shutdown the ERP system.
    Thanks a lot in advance

Note 1076664 - Program for controlled system shutdown specifies a program, that can help you in this manner (with SP16).
For CRM you should check after you restarted the system again, that the queues are triggered/registered again (SMQR).

  • Windows 2003 R2 Gray Screen Hang on HP DL380 G5 when restarting or shutdown after Nov/Dec 2011 Windows Update

I’ve 4 identical HP DL 380 G5 Servers with Windows 2003 R2 Std.  The 4 machines have the same Windows driver version and motherboard BIOS version.  2 have no problem.  2 have problems after Nov/Dec 2011 Windows Update!
After running for a few days from power-up, the 2 problem servers will hang at gray screen during restart.  After clicking for restart,
    - The Event Log service will stop normally so there is no more error log can be seen!
    - The IP ping to the server can still work.  The mouse pointer in Windows can still be moved.
    - The Windows shutdown gray screen can be shown.
    - [Ctrl-Alt-Del] has stopped to function.
Then the system just freezes at that status.  I can only cold-boot the system!
After power-up again, I can do the Windows restart / shutdown normally!  But after a few day of running, the above symptom repeats!  The symptom happened since I installed the Windows Update in Dec 2011.  It didn’t happen before that!
Anyone can give a hint on how to diagnose it?

    Hi,
In order to troubleshoot the server hang issue, you can first preform a clean boot on the problematic system.
    Steps:
    ====================
     1. Click Start->Run…->type
    msconfig and press Enter
    2. Click Services tab and select Hide All Microsoft Services
and Disable All third party Services
    3. Click Startup tab and Disable All startup items
    4. Click OK and choose Restart
    5. After reboot, check whether the problem still occurs
If the server hang on issue still continues in clean boot mode, for the further troubleshooting, you may check in the Task Manager to see which process takes the memory resources.
Meanwhile, you can also use reliability and performance Monitor to track down what cause the performance issue.

  • Finish system shutdown with closed lid

The system goes to sleep after a shutdown is issued (press powerbutton and click "Shutdown" ("Ausschalten" in german locale)) and the lid is closed while the system is still busy with the shutdown process.
How can I prevent the "go to sleep" and let the system shutdown cleanly even with the lid closed?
This happens on an iBook G3 (PowerBook4,1) with 10.4.11.

The only way to shut the computer down is from the Apple Menu or pressing the power button for about 10 seconds. Then close the lid.
Pressing the power button for that long would cause a hard shutdown AFAIK.
I found a kext which, from the description, seems to do parts of what I want:
    Insomnia.kext

Now all I need to find out is to do it only when the system is about to shutdown.

  • MacBook Late 2008 (Unibody Aluminum) running Lion cannot shutdown, restart, or logout

After upgrading to mac os x lion, my macbook has not been able to restart or shutdown or even logout properly. This problem was not present when the laptop was in snow leopard. Currently, I am able to do a shutdown through the terminal by using the command:
    sudo shutdown -h now
or restart by using the command:
    sudo shutdown -r -h now
This is fine for most situations but when I am trying to install an update or a program that needs a restart, I am unable to do so. When still at the login screen, I am able to shutdown properly leading me to think that a process is preventing shutdown but I can't find anything in the console. The power button also becomes unresponsive (normally pressing it brings up the window asking whether to shutdown, restart, etc.) and can only be used to do a forced shutdown (i.e. holding it down for 10 seconds). The sleep, restart, and shutdown functions in the apple menu also do not work.
    Any ideas anyone?

  • [SOLVED] System freeze after upgrade linux-3.12.9-2 to linux-3.13.4-1

After upgrading from kernel 3.12.9 to 3.13.4 (booth x86_64 architecture) i detected system freeze after round about 0.5s of the login screen about 80% of the time.
So i first thought it coulbe be the the ati driver and uninstalled that via livecd/chroot.
But the same thing happens in comand line only mode.
Afterwards i setup at ssh server to get into the maschine if it is still running, but is was also not responding to that.
Downgrading to 3.12.9 solved the issue. In journalctl i could not find any usefull information.

  • Macbook PRO Retina 15" shutdown after sleep

    Hi,
I have a new mackbook pro retina 15".
When I close the lid the macbook goes on sleep mode.
But, even when it is supplied by AC it shutdown after a couple of our and if I reopen the lid it restart.
For example Chrome restart saying that it has been closed not in correct way. How can I avoid the automatic shut down?

This has happened to me (system restarts when waking from sleep) and I have read about it happening to others.  It is never quite clear if we are encountering the same problem. For me, the problem only occurs occasionally, and intermittently, and it only happens when the computer has slept long enough to enter its hibernation state, so it is hard to troubleshoot.
This behavior started with Mavericks. I am not sure if it is caused by some incompatible third party software or some weakness in Mavericks. Usually, it's the former.  One thing I tried as a sort of general, blanket troubleshooting step is reset the NVRAM and Reset the System Management Controller.  This problem has not re-occured since those steps.  This proves nothing, of course.  But it is harmless to try it.

  • Background jobs and system shutdown

    Hello,
I would like to know what happens if the BI jobs were not suspended prior to system shutdown? how will that impact those jobs after the restart of the system? I was wondering what would happen to the jobs that were active vs. jobs that were released/scheduled......we we need to re run/ re schedule them again after the restart? please advice...thanks

    Hi,
When you say background jobs, I believe what you meant jobs in the "Active" or "Released" status. These jobs will get cancelled as once you shutdown, the work processes are going to stop.
Once, you start the system you can re-run them or re-schedule them. For BI jobs which perform data-loading from other satellite systems (ERP, SCM, or other BI systems in a data-mart kind of a configuration), these data loads will fail & the data in the infoCube, PSA, etc will not be the updated data (may be master or transactional data).
So, for these you'll have to request the BI-Teams to re-run the data load & batch jobs.
