Update date column

Hi,
I have date data in a CHAR(8) column called DOB_TXT. The format of the data is MMDDYYYY.
I need to store this data in a DATE datatype. To do this I created a column called DOB in the same table. I am trying the following update statements:
update TABLE_A set DOB = to_date(DOB_TXT, 'MMDDYYYY');
update TABLE_A set DOB = to_date(TO_CHAR(DOB_TXT), 'MMDDYYYY');
I get the following error:
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-01843: not a valid month
Just to make sure I also ran the following before I ran the update statements:
alter session set nls_date_format = 'MMDDYYYY';

I checked the data, there are some dates in the
format 03242008. I might need to remove the leading
'0' and try. Will keep you posted. Thank you all
for your help.Duh!?
That isn't an additional leading 0, that is someone who's entered the date in the text in DDMMYYYY format rather than MMDDYYYY format.
That now means you are stuck because you don't know if something like
07062008 is 7th June 2008 or 6th July 2008.
As someone above said. Bummer. Although a very good lesson in why you shouldn't store dates as text.

    The date column should automatically get updated when ever i execute an Update statement.

    Getting the data from the database is not a problem.
    The dataset contains the correct information.
    But updating the database is impossible.
    I get errors like:
    ORA-01861: literal does not match format string
    And if I don't specify a DATE format in the TO_CHAR statement I get this error:
    Concurrency violation: the UpdateCommand affected 0 records.
    I think I've tried everything.
    I've used the OracleGlobalization class, with the SetSessionInfo method.
    I've tried all different types of date conversions to make sure that
    the date format on the database is the same as in the dataset.
    I've tried to change the NLS parameters on the DB server and in the registry on the client.
    I've tried to change the DATECOLUMN type in the typed dataset from string to Oracle.DataAccess.Types.OracleDate
    But it still doesn't work.
    The default date format on the DB 9i server is AMERICAN,(DD-MON-RR).
    A strange thing is that when I instead of using the ODP classes use
    the System.Data.OracleClient and its OracleCommandBuilder
    the code works perfectly without any errors.
    This is the test code that works:

    My experience until this came up is that the ODP provider is better on everything
    than the microsoft Oracle provider so I don't want to switch unless I have to.
    Could someone that have used the ODP OracleCommandBuilder for updating a table including DATE columns with a typed dataset please give me some tips on how to make this work?
    I would be the happiest man on earth if someone had a solution :-)

    Don't convert the dates to strings. Ever.
    The command builder uses the metadata returned from the select command to build the insert/update commands. Using to_char in the query tells ODP that that is a varchar2 column. If you omit the to_char the commandBuilder will know to bind a date parameter in that spot.
    Also in your typed dataset you should change the type from a string to a date.

    I just want to update a column with a specific date.
    update table set date = ...
    I almost tried everything. Also to_char and to-date and I always get the following error Message:
    ORA-01747: invalid user.table.column, table.column, or column specification
    The table and column names are correct. It must have something to do with the format of the date or the code itself is principle wrong.

    Error: ORA-01747: invalid user.table.column, table.column, or columns specification
    Cause: You tried to reference a column name, but the column name used is a reserved word in Oracle.
    Solution:
    1)Try redefining your table so that none of your column names are reserved words.
    2)Try enclosing the reserved word in double quotes.
    Since you have used reserved words in oracle as column names, you get these error messages.
    Eg)
    UPDATE suppliers
    SET Integer = 10000;
    the above should give you an error message 1747. The correct way is as below:
    UPDATE suppliers
    SET "Integer" = 10000;

    Yes Prathap, I need to update a single column of type number in the search results table.but each of that column value would be updated with different values like one row in that column will take a value 325 while another will take 500 etc based on user input.

    I hope you can help me with some suggestions in how to solve the issue i have for the table below
    SQL> select * from table1;
    NAME                         ID CONCAT               SAME_GR
    A                            10 100|200|300

    SQL> What i need to do is to flag the rows which have the same ID & Concat value by updating the same_gr column with the same value, something like
    SQL> select * from table1;
    NAME                         ID CONCAT               SAME_GR
    A                            10 100|200|300              GR1
    B                            11 100|200|300              GR2
    C                            12 100|200                   GR3
    D                            10 100|200|300             GR1
    SQL> One important note is that the value in SAME_GR column should have the form of GR<sequence>
    I've been trying to use lag/lead functions but i can't succeed in updating the column with the same value for each group of rows where ID & CONCAT are the same.
    I forgot to mention i'm on 11gR1.
    Any help is very much appreciated.

    yes, you can.. all you need to do add is sum operation. after dense_Rank column sepecify + 254 and thus it will add up the value with dense rank output.
    sample run...

    I've just been messing about with a similar problem. Basically, I have a view that involves a join across two tables, I have a data block in my form that's based on the view, and I've written an INSTEAD OF trigger to insert/update/delete from the two tables.
    I was getting the error message 'Cannot insert or update data in a view', and it turned out that the error was happening because the join column between the two tables was the primary key on one of the tables, but the corresponding column on the join table had no unique key on it. This meant that Oracle couldn't establish a one-to-one relationship between rows in the view and rows in the underlying tables. The column on the join table was in fact unique on that table, and adding a unique constraint on that column in the database cured the problem.

    The table can be updated through a view based on multiple tables, if and only if the table is a "key preserved" table. Rather than explaining myself, i avoided the burden of typing by finding the material in Oracle Docs and pasting it for you :-)
    If you want a join view to be updatable, all of the following conditions must be
    true:
    1. The DML statement must affect only one table underlying the join.
    2. For an INSERT statement, the view must not be created WITH CHECK
    OPTION, and all columns into which values are inserted must come from a
    key-preserved table. A key-preserved table in one for which every primary
    key or unique key value in the base table is also unique in the join view.
    3. For an UPDATE statement, all columns updated must be extracted from a
    key-preserved table. If the view was created WITH CHECK OPTION, join
    columns and columns taken from tables that are referenced more than once
    in the view must be shielded from UPDATE.
    4. For a DELETE statement, the join can have one and only one key-preserved
    table. That table can appear more than once in the join, unless the view was
    created WITH CHECK OPTION.

    I know with this Technique the table must be truncated if not deleted first.  There is probably a better way to do this which I'm very open to.  I'm also looking for coding that will roll back any changes made should an error occur.

    I updated the data load rule delimter to "," and found different error message as follows.
    'A910201.99','HSP_InputValue','HKDepart','No_WT','032003','NO_Lease','FY09','Actual','Final','Local','0','0','0','0','0','0','0','0','0','0','0','0','Cannot end dataload. Analytic Server Error(1003014): Unknown Member [0] in Data Load, [1] Records Completed'
    It seems that the data load rule can recognize the some member except the figures of Jan to Dec..

    I need to change the date format for a whole column. At present i can do MM-DD-YYYY. I need to change this this to DD-MMM-YYYY.
    I know about the to_date function, i tried to apply it to change the format of my whole column by doing the following.....
    CREATE TABLE "IT220_DATEHOLIDAY"
    "DEPARTID" VarChar(2)NOT NULL ENABLE,
    "HOLCODE" VARCHAR2(2)NOT NULL ENABLE,
    "DEPARDATE" DATE,
    to_date('DATE','DD-MMM-YYYY'), <<<change DATE column to DD-MMM-YYYY
    CONSTRAINT "DATEHOLIDAY_PK" PRIMARY KEY ("DEPARTID") ENABLE
    ORA-00902: invalid datatype <<<<This was the error message i received.
    I am aware that the to_date function is supposed to be used to change strings into a certain format. I guess this means you cant do it with columns? Is there anyway i can format the whole column or do i have to do each string of data entered one by one?

    I'm not sure you hit the right forum, as this doesn't seem to be a problem with APEX.
    Anyway:
    You can't use that function on a table like that, and as you already suggested, the to_date-function expects a string value.
    It seems you also have a misunderstanding of the basic datatypes in the database. DATE is such a datatype and is stored an internal format you don't need to care about. Each time your request the value, the database will give you a string representation according to either your locale or you give a certain formatting mask.
    The same applies to insert or update operations: you hand in either a variable of type DATE or use a function like to_date to create an "object" of type date.

    So to answer your question: You would format it as part of your insert operation, taking a string and convert it using to_date.

    I have executed the same query through database navigator, its working fine.

    Hi Rahul,
    Have you changed table structure after generating DB Adapter files? You may try after re-creating DB adapter.
    This error may also come if you are not using UNICODE support. Open Oracle JDeveloper, select Tools > Preferences > Environment > Encoding > UTF-8 to enable Unicode support.
