Updating many columns at once

Do we get a performance issue if we update 120 columns of a table a once..
UPDATE tab_name
SET col1 = x.col1
col2 = x.col2
col3 = x.col3
col120 = x.col120
WHERE pk_col121 = x.pk_col121; If so how can this syntax be modified to get the best performance.
Sorry if my question is naive..
I'm currently working on this task and wondered if I could face this issue..
Thanks.

Hi,
It doesn't especially hurt performace to update 120 columns. The main thing with performance is how you get the rows, not what you do onece you have them.
Since you're getting the rows using pk_col121, then make sure there's an index on pk_col121. (If pk_col121 is declared as the PRIMARY KEY, then there is an index.)
What does x. mean in your example? Is x some other table? If so, for best performance, you should UPDATE all the rows in one statement.
MERGE may be more convenient than, and just as performant as, UPDATE.

  • Update Multiple Columns when concerned about redo/undo log sizes.

    Hi ,
    I have update statements that updates multiple columns at once if any of them is changed. What I see that even though the value of column is not changed it still increases the redo size.
    Below is a sample code similar to the ones in my code. Basically I check whether there is a difference in any of the columns to be updated and update all of them.
    Is there a way to improve redo log size without splitting the update statement for every column that I will be updating. Redo/Undo log size is a concern for us..
      For i In 1.rec.Count Loop
        Update employees e
           Set e.first_name = rec(i).first_name, e.last_name = rec(i).last_name
         Where e.first_name != rec(i).first_name
            Or e.last_name != rec(i).last_name;
      End Loop;My database is 10g.

    If you are concerned about the amount of undo and redo, you should be less concerned about the small diffrence between updating 1 or 3 columns and remove the loop that is contributing to a massive increase in both undo and redo.
    Re: global temporary table row order
    Name                                  Run1        Run2        Diff
    STAT...undo change vector size     240,500   6,802,736   6,562,236
    STAT...redo size                 1,566,136  24,504,020  22,937,884Run2 shows what adding a loop to a regular SQL statement will do to undo and redo. It made the redo used 15 times greater and the undo almost 30 times greater.

  • LINQ: Update a column with auto increment value

    Hi All,
    Greetings.
    I am very new to C# (though with lot of experience in VC++). Now a days, I am engaged in a C# project where I need to deal with ADO.NET DataTable and related classes. I am stuck up in a scenario as follows:
    I have a data table (of DataTable type) pre-populated with many rows (50000+), parsed from a log file. Now I need to add a column that will be holding index number for each records; eg. 1, 2, 3......
    I have tried to add the auto-incremented column dynamically, with seed = 0 and increment = 1, but it is not working.
    Is there any LINQ query that I can run to update the DataTable at once? Or foreach loop per DataRow is the only option here?
    I appreciate any quick suggestion on this.
    Thanks in advance.
    Sanjoy Jana.

    You should add the auto increment column to the DataTable before you pouplate it with the other data:
    //1. Create a datatable
    DataTable dt = new DataTable();
    //2. add the autoincrement column:
    DataColumn column = new DataColumn();
    column.DataType = System.Type.GetType("System.Int32");
    column.AutoIncrement = true;
    column.AutoIncrementStep = 1;
    column.AutoIncrementSeed = 1;
    //3. Fill the dataTable using an SqlDataAdapter or whatever
    dt.Columns.Add(new DataColumn("name"));
    dt.Rows.Add("1");
    dt.Rows.Add("2");
    dt.Rows.Add("3");
    dt.Rows.Add("4");
    Then you don't have to add the "auto incremented" values yourself in some kind of a loop (using for example LINQ or foreach).
    If you want to know how to poplulate the DataTable from a database query using an adapter, please refer to the following page:
    http://www.dotnetperls.com/sqldataadapter
    Hope that helps.

  • Which Method Should be overriden to update a column in master?

    Hi,
    I have a Master/Detail relationship with the requirement to update master depending on some column in detail. This update of master can raise an exception and it should be done at post time. The way to update master changes depending on the DML action. If an exception is raised I want to rollback the changes made to master.
    I tried prepareForDML, postChanges methods. In both cases the exception is ignored and the transaction is not commited and does not display any message visible. But the exception can be catched and visible on console.
    I tried creating a validation method on detail entity. In the validation method I update master and call master.validate. This seems to work but the validation method can be called more than once and thus can update master more than once which is invalid.
    So which method should I use to post changes of the master?
    I present detail data as a ADF-Table. I want to display the exception as attached to a row in ADF-Table, just below the row in the table. Is it possible?

    Jan,
    I have OrderItems and deliveryItems entities with 1..* relationship. I want to update OrderItems.deliveredQuantity and OrderItems.returnedQuantity fields based on delivery Type (i.e return, accept). OrderItems entity has an entity-level validation rule as quantity >= deliveredQuantity - returnedQuantity. So it might throw exceptions on Validate.
    I decided to implement this functionality in deliveryItemsImpl.postChanges, deliveryItemsImpl.prepareForDML and finally in an entity level validation rule (method) in deliveryItemsImpl. In postChanges and PrepareForDML it just ignores the exception, does not commit, does not give any error messages. In the last case it retries to validate the entity continously and cannot validate. To my opinion it should stop saying this entity is invalid. Isn't?

  • LK6.5 Modbus read/write to many addresses at once

    LK6.5 Modbus read/write to many addresses at once. What happens as example; I have address 100 to 150 and 180-200. Addresses in between doesn't exist. Not all are connected. The modbus (Ethernet master) driver reads in a single command (in order to optimize) address 100-190.
    That is a nice feature, but the result is a reply like "not existing" because between 150-180 are not existing. No error is shown in lookout (communication works OK).
    I know I can do a workaround by setting maximum value per message to 1 or 2, but the project has 140 modbus objects with a total of around 4000 connections. I would like to use a big range in one command, but no addresses that are not existing. Beside of that, it looks like this is a problem that let the driver and/or lookout crash.
    Any one knows a fast solution? Is there another updated modbus driver?

    more inputs:
    The response from Modbus device actually doesn't specify which address has the problem if you read a range.
    When you read a range, and a certain address in this range doesn't exist, do you get no data in lookout?
    It depends on the Modbus device whether lookout gets error response or the good response. I don't see detailed definition in the Modbus specification. So, if a certain address in a range doesn't exist, the device may either return error or good response. But the problem is that the error reponse is just an error code. Lookout doesn't know which address has the problem. It may be a problem that you don't see alarm in Lookout.
    I don't see a way on lookout side to get a better behaviour. Maybe you can consult the device provider for any advice, such as what should the modbus master do, is the range read expected?

  • Updating a column of a table

    Hi all
    I have a problem in updating one column in the target table(say table A) from a column in the source table (say table B).
    All the columns in table A has been populated. Just one column should be populated. My source is a SQL object that contains a complex sql query that returns three columns date_from, date_to and ID.
    In the table A, I have the same date_from and date_to and need to get the ID from the SQL object and set it to the corresponding ID in the table A.
    I tried many ways to update the table, but it I couldn't ;(
    I should read from a table and update it based on a look-up function mapped to the column I need to update.
    I want to map the ID colmn from table A to a look-up ext function that can get the column from the table B. However I don't know how to use the Data Services objects to just update 1 column. If you could give me a consequence of the DS objects to be update a table based on a look-up , I would be so grateful.
    Thanks.

    Your dataflow should look like this :
    1) Source = the SQL transform with date_from, date_to and ID as columns.
    2) Next add a query (copy all columns from schema in to schema out) and set date_from and date_to as keys. Also make sure column names exactly match the column names in your target table, if not rename them in this query.
    3) Add a Map_Operation transform that maps all "normal" operation codes to "update"
    4) Finally add your target table and in the properties/options set "use input keys" to yes (or checked).
    This will generate UPDATE statements for all columns used in the query with a WHERE clause based on the keys defined in the query (date_from, date_to).

  • Doubt about UPDATE STAT COLUMN

    Hi,
    I have a doubt of when to execute update stat:
    i create this SQL to generate an SQL script to generate update stat for all my tables:
    select 'UPDATE STAT ' || schemaname || '.' || tablename || ' ESTIMATE SAMPLE 20 PERCENT' from tables where schemaname = 'DBUSER' and not tablename like 'JDBC%' AND type = 'TABLE'
    and created this SQL to generate an SQL script for update stat for all columns.
    select 'UPDATE STAT COLUMN(*) FOR ' || schemaname || '.' || tablename || ' ESTIMATE SAMPLE 20 PERCENT' from tables where schemaname = 'DBUSER' and not tablename like 'JDBC%' AND type = 'TABLE'
    my doubt is i really need run that second script? or the UPDATE STAT for table dont UPDATE STAT for all columns?
    thanks for any insight

    > my doubt is i really need run that second script? or the UPDATE STAT for table dont UPDATE STAT for all columns?
    Hi Clovis,
    hmm... good question.
    There are a few things to know about the UPDATE STAT command here.
    1) It will always generate statistics for key or indexed columns.
    2) The optimizer won't be able to generate a better plan when there are column statistics for non-indexed columns present.
    3) The command will also collect column statistics for all columns that already have statistics.
    The direct effect of 3) is that by running your second command just once - all column statistics will always be collected.
    Since you can easily change the default sample size for your tables via
    ALTER TABLE SAMPLE SIZE 20 PERCENT
    I would say: drop your script and just use
    UPDATE STAT DBUSER.* ESTIMATE
    This single command would lead to the same statistics as your script does.
    And if you really, really want to leave out the JDBC tables - then just set their default sample size to 0 and they will be ignored by the UPDATE STAT command.

    Lars

  • Update some columns using case....

    Hi ,
    Is it possible to update some columns using case statement...????
    For example when col1 is null then update to a value 'x' else update it to the value '*' , when col2 is null then update to a value y else update it to compute the running total up to that time....
    This update statement is contained in db packaged procedure and it receives the values...as parameters....
    How can i write down this update statement...?????
    Many thanks,
    Simon

    Hi ,
    Cant' it be used for two or more columns that have to be updated....????
    i mean
    update table set col_a = case when col_a is null then col_a else '*',
                       col_b = case when col_b is null then col_b else col_b+col_b_var
      end
      where .....The above in bold is running total.... This update is defined in a procedure and it receives numbers as parameters, so the need is to add them for every record it receives...., that's why i set above col_b+col_b_var... where col_b_var is the parameter of the procedure....
    SORRY...IT IS POSSIBLE.....
    Thanks , a lot

    Hi,
    You certainly don't want to issue separate UPDATE statements for every column; that will be really inefficent.
    SQL has several ways to implement IF-THEN-ELSE logic. CASE is the most versatile, but NVL will do everything you need for this job. You can use one of those to set a column to itself (and therefore not really update that column) when appropriate.
    For example:
    CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE TMP_PROC (
      pPOL_NUM   IN       NUMBER,
      pOED          IN   DATE,
      pTERM          IN   NUMBER,
      pTRANS_CD  IN       CHAR
    AS
    BEGIN
         UPDATE  temp
         SET     oed      = NVL (poed,       oed)
         ,     term      = NVL (pterm,       term)
         ,     trans_cd = NVL (ptrans_cd, trans_cd)
         WHERE     pol_num      = ppol_num;
      COMMIT;     -- Maybe
    END    tmp_proc;"EXCEPTION WHEN OTHERS THEN NULL" is almost always a bad idea. If there's an error, don't you want to know about it? Shouldn't you at least log a message in a warnings table or something?
    Think careflully about whether or not you want to COMMIT every time you call this procedure.
    Just as it's inefficient to issue a separate UPDATE statement for every column, it's also inefficient to issue a separate UPDATE statement for every row. If efficiency is important, it should be possible to UPDATE several rows in a single UPDATE statement, using NVL (or CASE, or COALESCE, or NULLIF, or NVL2, or ...).
    This was a very well-written question! Thanks for providing the CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements, and such a clear explanation.

  • Update multiple columns with single update statement..

    HI all,
    i am reading the columns value from different table but i want to update it with signle update statement..
    such as how to update multiple columns (50 columns) of table with single update statement .. is there any sql statement available i know it how to do with pl/sql..

    As I understood, may be this. Here i am updating ename,sal, comm columns all at once.

      3         sal = sal + 1000,
      4         comm = 100

  • How to update a column value by comparing old value by using DML Handler...

    Hi Can anyone post the DML Handler code for updating a column value by comparing the old value.
    Thanks,
    Ray

    Hi,
    Here is an example of a DML handler.
    BEGIN
    DBMS_APPLY_ADM.SET_DML_HANDLER(
    object_name => 'scott.emp',
    object_type => 'TABLE',
    operation_name => 'UPDATE',
    error_handler => false,
    user_procedure => 'strmadmin.update_column',
    apply_database_link => NULL,
    apply_name => 'MY_APPLY');
    END;
    This DML handler which will send any LCR matching the specified conditions to the strmadmin.update_column for customised processing.
    You can write the strmadmin.update_column procedure so that it extracts the old values from the LCR. You can then use the old values from the LCR to identify the row in the table. Once you identify the row, you can update it as you want.
    I haven't really tried to do any customised processing using DML handlers, but this should work.
    Hope this is of help.

  • Need logic to update Varchar column in a table

    Hi,
    Could you give me logic for below.
    I have a table xx_dbc where one of the column Attribute1 is varchar2(240).
    Attribute1 has values like
    ==================
    (AIN,PUP,GRI,NINE)
    (AIN,PUP)
    (AIN)
    (GRI,NINE)
    I have to update this column for every record with values AIN=10 , PUP=20 , GRI=30 , NINE=40
    Columns should be updated like below
    (10,20,30,40)
    (10,20)
    (10)
    (30,40)
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    Here's one way:
    WITH  replacements  AS
        SELECT  'AIN' AS old_str, '10' AS new_str  FROM dual  UNION ALL
        SELECT  'PUP',            '20'             FROM dual  UNION ALL
        SELECT  'GRI',            '30'             FROM dual  UNION ALL
        SELECT  'NINE',           '40'             FROM dual
    ,    normalized_data  AS
        SELECT  p_key
        ,       LEVEL               AS sort_key
        ,       REGEXP_SUBSTR ( attribute1
                              , '[^(,)]+'
                              , 1
                              , LEVEL
                              )     AS str
        FROM    xx_dbc
    --  WHERE   ...     -- If you need any filtering, put it here
        CONNECT BY   LEVEL              <= 1 + REGEXP_COUNT (attribute1, ',')
                AND  PRIOR p_key        = p_key
                AND  PRIOR SYS_GUID ()  IS NOT NULL
    SELECT    '(' || LISTAGG ( NVL (r.new_str, n.str)
                             ) WITHIN GROUP (ORDER BY sort_key)
                  || ')'  AS  new_attribute1
    ,         n.p_key                         -- If wanted
    FROM             normalized_data  n
    LEFT OUTER JOIN  replacements     r  ON  r.old_str  = n.str
    GROUP BY  n.p_key
    ORDER BY  n.p_key
    Like everything else, it depends on your Oracle version.
    In the query above, p_key can be any unique key from xx_dbc, including attribute1 or ROWID.
    Relational databases, like Oracle, work best when each column of each row contains only 1 piece of information, not a delimited list of any number of pieces.  This is so fundamental to table design that it's called First Normal Form.  Most of the work in this problem involves converting your denormalized data into First Normal Form, and then converting it back again.  This problem, like many others, would be much simpler and more efficient if your table was in First Normal Form.
    The query above assumes the replacement strings (such as 'AIN' and '10') are not already in a table.  If they are, or if they can be derived from a table, then you don't need the replacements sub-query; use your real table instead.

    So I want to display this data eventually on forms. So I think I do need to create a blank column.
    so let's say I want the concatenated data to end up in "Final_Delivery".
    How to do that?
    Thank youI dont have any idea about Forms...But just a guess that for form as well you must be writing some SQL, and you can use the sql there directly. Otherwise if you want to get it inserted into new column in existing table....First you have to add a new column to your table and then run update Statement to populate that data..similar to this

  • At max how many columns is advisable to create in a table/view

    Hi All,
    I have two transaction table from which i want to create a simple view or materialized view. But the number of columns is about 200. So i want to know at max how many columns is advisable from the performance point of view.
    Even though i will create 200 columns in a view , for a perticular client installation i may not use all the columns.
    one more thing i will never use 200 columns in the select statement . At a time i will use only 4/5 columns.
    It may happen from this four column one column will be the 1st and 2nd column will be the 200th one.
    I want to know how it affects the performance and in which scenario . Please help if any body knows or already faced this kind of scenario.
    I am using oracle 10g .

    thanks for ur reply .
    We are going to use this view in a report , so if i will create it as simple view it will affect report performance. because the view script is too long ...so every time quring to a view will decrease the performance.
    Are you asking me if it will? I think it probably won't but of course you have the means to test it to be sure, right?
    As u said MV should be done with minimum possible column . what can be the maximum column in MV ..??It would be defined by the limits on:
    * The maximum number of columns that a table can contain
    * The size of the query needed to define the select statement
    * Limitations on queries needed to maintain the data

    Hi,
    I'm Galit from the QE team of VIN.
    All the things that you've described are correct.
    It is actually an edge case where the only VM, that the manual App can be managed from its Map view, was removed from the App.
    The Manual App management is as designed, and may be changed in the future.
    There are 2 ways to overcome this situation:
    1.You can, as you stated, create another Manual App with similar name and remain with the "Zombie App".
    2. To run a specific command that will remove the Zombie App from the DB.
    Please note that option no. 2 involves using an API that we do not publish.
    If you would like to use option no. 2 contact me in private and we will see about supplying the relevant commands to run in order to delete the "zombie" application.
    Thanks,
    Galit Gutman
