Updating old(er) iPhoto library without system crashing
Hello, my old iMac was recently stolen and I would now like to recover my iPhoto library.
So I've imported it from Time Machine.
But when I try to open iPhoto, the systems needs to update the old library and then crashes.
Any ideas?
Hi,
Thanks for your answer!
Hereafter you will find the messages from the system log.
I found the same messages several times, so I didn't copy-paste them each time.
I hope this is what you need to solve the issue.
Thanks in advance!

I no longer have the PC that had my CD library and purchased music on iTunes. I am now on another PC and managed to download my purchased iTunes music etc. Is there a way on iTunes that I can get back my old CD music library without ripping again ? Earlier back up is corrupted. Thank you in advance. No longer have my old iPod but getting new one.
If you had the hard drive from the original machine, a backup of the same, an iPod with the media, or a subscription to iTunes Match then there would have been hope, but alas no.
For the future see Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy.

iphoto 9.5 won't import photos from iPhoto 7.5. Library will not update using the iPhoto library upgrader application. Repeatedly says it can't locate photos even when told to cancel. I think the photos in question are in Nikon RAW format.
iPhoto 9.5 immediately tries to "upgrade" my library using the upgrader.
iPhoto 9.5 asks you to run the upgrader to prepare the library for 9.5. It then will update the library to its format.
You need to do the following:
1 - go to your Applications/Utilities folder and double click on the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 application.
2 - select Choose Library, navigate to your iPhoto library, select it and let the upgrader do its thing.
3 - launch iPhoto 9.5 to open and finish the conversion of the library.

Accessing photos in iPhoto Library without importing the whole library?
I watched the Aperture video tutorials and thought I saw how to access photos to manipulate from the iPhoto Library without importing the library, but now I can't find the reference!
Ideally I don't want to import the whole iPhoto library as it is rather large.
I simply would like to open photos from it to work on.
However, when I try to import files and navigate to my Pictures folder there is no sign of the iPhoto Library, only an empty file called "iPhoto Library Recovered Photos".
Note that I can access photos in other folders but I can't even see my iPhoto library, let alone open photos from it.

Browse through iPhoto Library as above and drag chosen photo(s) into the project in the Inspector.
The photo can then be adjusted and finally saved by selecting File>Export>Version etc. -
Hey everyone, I have a Lacie 1 TB back up machine that I use to backup every once in a while everything I have in my macbook pro.
I don't know if there's a difference between a hard disk in which you save whatever you want or a back up machine that backs up whatever you have in your computer once you connect it, so, My question is the following:
Having backed up my Iphoto (I checked if there's a folder in the machine with all my photos), can I now get rid of all my photos in the laptop so there's more space? If I delete my photos (in Iphoto), does the back up machine automatically update its folders and delete my saved iphoto contents as well?
Thank you!
I'm doing this because my laptop is running really slow lately and makes a lot of noise (like an airplane getting ready for take off) even though I've used it for a year.
I use a Macbook pro 15''
OS X Version 10.8.4
processor: 2.2 GHz intel core i7
Memory 8GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Startup disk : macintosh HDOkay:
Except an arrow turning in circle near the ''wireless'' or ''sound'' symbols on the top of the screen. If I click on it, I see ''enter time machine'', ''back up now'', ''open time machine preferences''.
You're using Time Machine to back up to the External Disk.
Back to your first question:
Having backed up my Iphoto (I checked if there's a folder in the machine with all my photos), can I now get rid of all my photos in the laptop so there's more space?
No.
Time Machine keeps a rolling back up of your data. Eventually, anything you delete from your Mac will be deleted from iPhoto too.
If space is an issue then get another HD. They're not expensice and you can put your iPhoto Library on it.
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

ITunes reverting to old library after system crash
I just started my itunes after my computer crashed, and it has reverted back to an old library from 2010.
I've tried holding shift and opening itunes to select what library file (.itl) it uses, and even when I select the most recent one, which is dated yesterday, it still only loads the music that I added sometime in 2010.
All of the music and apps I have added since then (which is a lot!) are still in my itunes Media > Music folder, yet they are not showing up when I open itunes. This goes for both music/apps I have purchased from itunes, and music I have added.
Can anyone help me?! I don't want to have go through and add two years of music and apps again!Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

IPhoto Library contains system pictures.
I've been helping a FOAF make the switch to Apple and everything's gone smoothly except for one thing.
System icons and pictures keep appearing in iPhoto as pictures. I removed them once with great trepidation and suffered no ill effects. They are, however, back. I'm not on the machine, nor can I be immediately, but I do know that it's iPhoto 6 with a fully patched version of Tiger.
Any ideas as to what to do, why this is happening, and how to prevent it?Welcome to the Apple Discussions. How did the
switcher import his pictures into iPhoto? How did
you remove them the first time, thru the Finder or by
deleting them in iPhoto by dragging to the iPhoto
trash bin and emptying the trash with the
iPhoto->Empty Trash menu option?
I deleted them through iPhoto. I figured that iPhoto had somehow imported all the system stuff into its own library (smart, ain't I?) and that removing it from the iPhoto library itself would get the job done without trashing all the actual images. It seemed to work.
There's no way he should be getting the system icons
in the library unless he dragged the entire HD or the
System folder into the open iPhoto window.
That's what I can figure. I'm going to have to drive on out and see what she did to cause this. I was just hoping that there was a non-user related cause for this. Thanks!
Can you get some more details on the creation of the
library for us?

I cannot open iPhoto library without upgrading
I think I know the reason: There was recently an upgrade of Aperture, which I have purchased, which asked my to upgrade the iPhoto library. Anyway, iPhoto now says I need to upgrade iPhoto to open my library. And the only upgrade I see has to be paid for.
Can anyone confirm this?
Isn't it strange to force such an upgrade on customers?
Is there a work-around to this problem? If Aperture is using your iPhoto library, you probably have got iPhoto '11, so you can upgrade iPhoto for free. Anyway, it's better to check this.
Open a Finder window, choose Applications in the sidebar and you should see iPhoto. Right-click iPhoto and choose Get Info, so you should see the iPhoto version. If it's 9.x.x, you can upgrade iPhoto free of charge.
Open the Mac App Store, go to Updates and install iPhoto 9.5 for free. If you don't see the update, try switching the OS X language to English in System Preferences > Language & Region, and restarting -
Extracting photos from backup of iPhoto Library without iPhoto
I recently had to do a clean install of Mac OS X 10.7.5 because I had some funky file structures in my hard drive that were rendering my 8 year old Macbook unusable. I have a full Time Machine backup on an external hard drive and had to drag and drop what I wanted from the backup over to the cleaned hard drive as opposed to doing an automated restore (because I didn't want to restore the funky file structures that had screwed up my mac in the first place). So now I have everything I want back on the cleaned Mac except iPhoto won't open after being copied over from the backup. Fine - I didn't really care for iPhoto anyway so I don't want to buy it. Now I am trying to extract the photos from my backed up iPhoto library to get them on the Mac in plain old folders. I right click the library, select show package contents, select "originals" and then try to copy that folder to my cleaned hard drive - I get an error that I do not have sufficient permissions to do that. Same thing with any folder level.
I have tried iPhoto Library Manager - but that needs a working iPhoto application...
How can I get these photos out of this back up library without having to copy each one individually???? It's driving me nuts. grr. Here's how to restore an iPhoto Library from Time Machine:

IPhoto library missing after crash
Had just launched iPhoto to tweak some photos and it froze on me. Attempted a force-quit and it froze my PowerBook. Forced a restart and when i re-launched iPhoto, it reverted to a fresh, newly-launched version; i.e., no library! This was accompanied by a window saying I needed to upgrade and would I like to do that now? Clicked "Upgrade" and it crashed. This would happen everytime I launched it. Guess I'll have to re-install iLife, but does anyone have any ideas on why this happened?
Dino:
Check in your User/Pictures folder and see if you have more than one iPhoto Library folder. If so check the Originals folder of each to see which contains your image files. Then move the one without the image files to the desktop.
Next delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that's in your User/Library/Preferences folder. Launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and when asked, search for and select the library folder in your Pictures folder to open. If it crashes again, try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: It can take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. One user reported that with a library of about 5,000 images it took about 12 hours so plan ahead.
This creates a new library folder which you name and leaves your original library folder untouched. It has succeeded where other methods have not. -
IPhoto update wrecked my iPhoto library!
iPhoto was updated when I installed Yosemite. I lost my Events structure and 20,000 photos became individual files. I lost Faces completely. Rebuilding the iPhoto library failed. Time Machine back up failed. How can I get my structure back. The photos are still there
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. -
How to move iPhoto Library without making copy
I just updated to the new 10.10.3 and the new iPhoto came along with it. When I try to open my iPhoto library it won't let me and gives me an error message. This link show me how to handle it https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204484.
Here is the problem I'm running into. My hard drive is 1 TB total, I'm using 800 Gigs of that and of that 800 Gigs 450 gigs is my old iPhoto library. The solution I'm being given is this:
1. Open the Terminal app.
2. Type the following command and press Return. Substitute the name of your user account for your_username.
sudo chown -R your_username /Users/your_username/Pictures
3. When prompted, type your OS X user account password and press Return.
4. Type the following command and press Return. Substitute the name of your user account for your_username.
sudo chmod -R 700 /Users/your_username/Pictures
5. Quit Photos, then hold down the Option key and open Photos.
6. When Photos asks you to choose a library, try to migrate the library again.
My iPhoto library is stored on my "Macintosh HD" drive and not under a user. When I try to move the iPhoto library it says I don't have enough storage space to make a copy of the file, as its 450 gigs and I don't have a free 450 Gigs on my HD.
Does anyone know how to handle this?First: verify that iphoto is the same version or later version on the iMac, compared to the Macbook Pro. It must be the same version or a later version.
Second: in your Pictures folder on the iMac, rename the existing "iPhoto Library" to something like "iPhoto Library_old", so you have a copy in case something goes wrong.
Third: copy the iPhoto Library file (it's actually a package file, which is like a folder) from Pictures folder on the Macbook Pro to the Pictures folder on the iMac. You can do this easiest via a USB drive that has enough space to hold this file, moving it from one machine to the other. [You can also do it directly if both machines are on the network.]
Fourth: start iPhoto on the iMac, it should open the newly copied over iPhoto pictures that are in the iPhoto Library that you just copied to the iMac. If the iMac has a later version of iPhoto, it will indicate that it needs to convert the library to a new format, you should agree to let it proceed with that. If you have many pictures, it might take a while, minutes to even hours.
Fifth: don't delete the iPhoto Library on the Macbook Pro until you have verified that iPhoto is accessing all the photos and events in the iMac. Make sure the number of photos is correct. -
How can I delete repeats in my iPhoto library without going one at a time?
I have been trying to clean up my iphoto library, and find that many of my imports have been repeated in different places. Is there a way to clean out repeat photos so there aren't so many of the same ones without having to do so one at a time?
You can use any one of these applications to identify and remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free - was able to recognize the duplicated HDR and normal files from an iPhone shooting in HDR.
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported into another.
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
PhotoDedupo - $4.99 (App Store) - this app has a "similar" search feature which is like PhotoSweeper's bitmap comparison. It found all duplicates.
DeCloner - $19.95 - can find dupicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.
Some users have reported that PhotoSweeper did the best in finding all of the dups in their library: i photo has duplicated many photos, how...: Apple Support Communities.
If you have an iPhone and have it set to keep the normal photo when shooting HDR photos the two image files that are created will be duplicates in a manner of speaking (same image) but the only diplicate finder app that detected the iPhone HDR and normal photos as being duplicates was PhotoSweeper. None of the other apps detected those two files as being duplicates as they look for file name as well as other attributes and the two files from the iPhone have diffferent file names.
iPLM, however, is the best all around iPhoto utility as it can do so much more than just find duplicates. IMO it's a must have tool if using iPhoto.

How can i restore an iphoto library without using time machine
I somehow created a new iphoto library and my old one was deleted and wasn't saved using time machine. Is there any way i can get my old library back. Please help!!!
The dock icon always enters the last IPHOTO library opened - so all may not be lost ..
Look in Macintosh HD/Users/*your name on your mac/Pictures
iPhoto Library is the default - if you have another iPhoto library with some extension that may be the new one -- so simply click on iPhoto to reset the dock icon.
If you use time machine - and the Iphoto library is empty - Enter time machine while in this folder and back up through time until you find the last one with pictures. -
Loading a Back Up iPhoto Library, without imorting all of the photos
I backed up my entire iPhot library on to an external Hard Drive. I then went and dumped all of these photos off of my local Hard Drive, freeing up a ton of space. Now I want to use iPhoto to look at my backed up library on my external drive. However, it appears as though when I try to look at these photos on the backup drive it wants to import ALL of the photos back on to my local Drive.
Am I correct? Am I doing something wrong? What can I do to view this backup Library without importing them back on to my local HD?Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and point it at the Library on the External. This will open the Library, it will not move any pics back to your internal.
