Updating to Mail 4.3

Hello, I currently have Mail 3.6 loaded in my home iMac, but my work Mac mini is running 4.3. I don't recall getting an update notice for going to 4.3, and I would like to have the command-K so I can insert links in my messages readily like I do at work. What to do??? Thanks!

Hi. Is there way a way to force Mail 4.3 to upgrade my mailboxes? Or verify that they are already upgraded?
Background: My Mail preferences file got corrupted (by a kernel panic) and Mail lost my mailboxes (though the data was intact). With no access to a backup preferences file, I started to recreate one of my mailboxes. I then upgraded Mail to 4.3 (using Software Update for 10.6.4). When I launched Mail, I was asked to upgrade that single mailbox, which I did. Later I found an old preference file (pre Mail 4.3), restored it, and got all my mailboxes back. When I launched Mail 4.3 after restoring the preference file, Mail did not ask me to upgrade my mailboxes.....

    Hi all,
Mattreichenbach is probably on the right track here with a reset of settings.  I think I've determined the issue has to do with cached account information and inconsistencies for the account name.  This seems to crop up when I've changed my password and it hasn't propagated fully to all the servers, devices, certificates, etc.
Hopefully many here are on their way to restoration of service by now but it's clear that a lot of people are having the same issues.  Very frustrating and definitely something Apple needs to resolve:  incoming mail server field grayed out, incorrect autopopulation of different fields, other unanticipated behaviors.  If you're still having issues, though, here's what worked for me...
First, head to the iCloud preferences pane in System Configuration and choose "Sign Out".  When I did this it prompted me with a number of "are you sure" type questions about retaining information on my local machine.  I chose to delete/remove the info each time simply because it should all be restored by the cloud and I didn't want to risk a massive duplication of my data... I will say, I'm back up and running with no issues so I suspect you can make the same delete/remove choices...  But use your own judgment.  I don't want you to lose any data (ie.. please use care as you do this because I cannot bear the thought of causing anyone to experience the pain of data loss).
Once you've signed out of iCloud, restart your system.  When you get back in, head to the Mail, Contacts and Calendars section of your System Preferences and add your account back by choosing the brushed aluminum "iCloud" button.  When it asks for your account name, use your @iCloud.com email address.  I am all but certain my issue had started because one of my devices (iPhone or whatever) had been set up with an email alias specified instead of my @iCloud.com address.
Apple, if you're reading through any of these issues (there are TONS of users having this same problem).  Take note, that your icloud service somewhat frequently is not responding and yet tells the user that the password is wrong and this prompts people to be changing their passwords unnecessarily.  This has happened to me on numerous occasions.  Also, I noticed that last week's outage corresponded to a VERY similar outage exactly one year ago to the day.  Sounds like planned maintenance to me and I think you could do a better job notifying folks so we're not wasting HUGE amounts of time troubleshooting a problem that we have no hope of fixing.
Hope that helps some of you!

  • Upgrade to Lion: Mail is not compatible and won't open.  How do i reinstall an updated version Mail?

So, I'm currently trying to update my parent's computer and in the process of updating their Mail application it has become unusable.  My computer at home (not my parents computer) ran into the same problem before I updated to Lion and deleting the preferences for Mail solved it.  Plus, I have read previous posts about this similar problem and a typical troubleshooting solution was to delete the Mail preferences.
After all of my software updates (Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8) and deleting the preferences for Mail, I still receive the same error message when trying to open the application.  "Mail can't be used on this version of mac OS X.  Try opening the version of Mail located in the Applications foler on your computer."  My applications folder has not been adjusted, edited or even touched from it's original state in the dock/home folder.
I contacted AppleCare support and they advised me to reformat my computer.  I think that's a little... unneccesary??  It's just Mail that isn't working.  The rest of the applications (e.g. Safari, Address Book, iPhoto, etc.) open just fine.
After a second call to AppleCare, they had advised me differently than before.  Once they found out that my personal computer has Mac OS X Lion installed from the App Store, they suggested I simply upgrade my parents computer to Lion.
So, I used my download from the App Store and upgraded.  It went smoothly, but Mail still will not open properly.  And instead of the original error message, it comes up with this:
"Check with your developer to make sure Mail can work with your version of Mac OS X.  You may need to reinstall the application.  Check if there are any updates available for the application."
How can I re-install just Mail?  A startup disk is not accessible for me right now.  Can I download the latest version of Mail and install it from the Apple.com website?

Do we get money back if it no longer opens?
Certainly not without going through basic troubleshooting steps first. Many times some basic troubleshooting will fix things. If you haven't tried anything yet, you cannot say for sure that the app will not work at all.
There are a number of things in here that you can try.

In a worst case scenario, you can always delete the app and download it again and see if it will work. You will not be charged again as long as you use the same Apple ID that you bought the app with.

Mail on my Mac computer does not update when I update my mail on my iPhone and iPad. Can anyone help me with this?  Is there a setting that I need to check?

All that you had to do was to sign into the old account in order to update those apps. What I mean is that you just needed to sign into that account in the store settings like I described and that should have worked. You didnt need to enter the credit card information again - you justed needed to use the old ID and password.
Anyway, I think the good news is that if everything else is OK with the new account, just download iBooks with the new ID - it's a free app so its not like you have to pay for it again. I'm not sure what the other App is that you are talking about - but if it is the Apple Store App - that is free as well.
Try this anyway, when you try to update iBooks, just use the old password if the old ID still pops up.
Did you try signing into the store settings with your new ID and see what happens with the updates then?

I don't think that a software update from Apple will solve the issues that you are having. You have a rogue installation. After you posted I have just done the following:
Disk Utility can verify  my partitioned Volume (including my boot disk) AND REPAIR the non-boot disks on the same Volume without a glitch. It repairs the non-boot disks containing data smoothly.
I have used Mail to send some mails from some Yahoo and Hotmail accounts to my Thunderbird client containing GMail accounts - absolutely normal.
I have iLife '09 but my iMovie '09 and iPhoto '09 open in a jiffy and I see no issues here. I have 6GB RAM (Maximum) on an early 2008 Macbook Pro with a 750GB hard drive partitioned with 120GB reserved for the Boot Drive.
I am sorry that I cannot help further but I am sure there must be a way to reinstall the software without having to revert to restoring your ML backup. I have two clones and if you have such I would attempt to do that through that rather than through Time Machine - that is of course if you have a cloned drive.
    Good luck!

Fixed it myself. Under network settings "Auto Proxy Discovery" was enabled. When I turned this off everything started working again. Not sure how this was enabled in the first place.

I keep trying to update my mail inbox but keep being told connection to the server has failed.

Quit the maill app completely and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Or go to Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Your email account >Mail>Off. Restart the iPad and go back to settings and turn mail on again and see if that works.
Or try this as well ....Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • Adobe Security Update e-mail

I have at least one user that has received an "Adobe Security Updates" e-mail from Adobe stating, "A critical vulnerability has been identiied in Adobe Flash Player and Adobe Reader".  I say at least one user because only one user has forwarded this message to my CIO.
Now I know that my user is not running the latest version of these two applications.  I can fix that.  What I want to know is, why is he getting this e-mail?  Anyone know who at Adobe I should contact to find out why?  Is this because Adobe somehow knows that he's not running the most current version?  Or is it just something that Adobe sent out because it seemed like a good idea at the time.
I push Adobe Flash Player, Adobe Shockware Player, and Adobe Reader when I install Windows 7, and autoupdates are disabled as part of the installation process.  I'd rather handle the patching myself so I have a better feel for what is going on across my network.
This user was upgraded from Adobe Acrobat 9.x to 10.x.  That upgrade was performed manually be someone else.  I wonder if THAT is why my uses is receiving this email?

AHA!  You might be right.  The links in the e-mail point to a page on  adobeupdates<dot>net (I don't want anyone trying to click on the link and getting infected).
Is that a bona-fide Adobe web site?  I doubt it.  I didn't want to go to the specified page, for fear of infection, but if I tried to go to the main page, I couldn't connect.

  • Update to Mail

I don't use Mail (using Thunderbird instead for my email).
However when I woke up this morning, the Mail application was running, and over top was a dialog saying that Mail had been updated and asking me if I wanted to let the items in Keychain be used for the updated version.
So my question is: Why is an update to Mail handled differently from all other updates, by happening automatically instead of having Software Updater come up, tell me there is an update available, and asking me if I want to proceed with the update, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, asking me for my administrator password before allowing it to happen?
Mail now reports version Version 2.1 (752/752.2) - I have no idea what is was before.

    David.Austin.Allen wrote...
So the question is, what happened to your computer
overnight that opened Mail.app, which triggered the
    Keychain update request?
As far as I know nothing! The iMac is in the bedroom so my typical behaviour at bedtime is to quit all running apps (leaving just Finder and Dashboard indicated by the Dock "triangles", of course). I do not shut down the iMac, nor do I let it sleep (as I am still not certain whether the routines that are supposed to clean things up in the wee hours will do that if the computer sleeps.) But I do have the display set to sleep after 1/2 hour (so the room is allowed to go dark.)
I may open Mail only once or twice a month (to make sure Apple or spammers havn't filled my inbox (I do have it configured for my .mac mail account but don't typically ever use that.)
There was a thread yesterday with a link to AppleInsider that suggested Apple had left out some stuff in the original 10.4.7 update and would be re-issuing the update, which raised the question about how those of us who grabbed the early 10.4.7 upgrade would get the missing stuff. That made me think that this Mail update was snuck in as part of that process. But it concerned me that I wasn't required to put in my administrator password before any changes could occur by an external source.
Your comments prompted me to dig deeper just now. I know I updated to 10.4.7 on June 27 - Looking in System Profiler it says Mail was last modified on June 27 which is consistent with what you have told me. So if Mail was NOT updated overnight, indeed, what caused it to open itself (as I slept) and trigger the keychain event? (and no, there are no sleepwalking kids or cats that might have hit the keyboard while I slept.)
So I dug even deeper. Nothing in my Mail inbox except a "Welcome to .Mac" email that Apple sent me on Feb. 9 But what I did find in the sent box was an Alarm notification originated by an iCal reminder (another rarely used app, as my life is too simple to require a lot or reminders), sent by Mail to my "normal" email account (which I view via Thunderbird). Not using Mail or iCal on a regular basis I didn't know that having an iCal reminder sent would open up Mail. Case solved, I guess. (to my relief.)
Thanks again, David, for your thoughts that put me onto this.
