Upgrade seems unfair

Thanks for reading. I recently checked at a Verizon Store to see how much my upgrade would be and the sales associate said it would be a $30 credit to the advertised price of any phone in the store. If I got that straight, then I am looking at spending almost full price on a phone when I upgrade in a couple of weeks.  It sounds unfair to me considering I got at least $100 off my last two phones. This would be my third upgrade and 6th year with Verizon. I think I should get at least $200 off a smart phone. I was planning on getting an iPhone.  I figure all the spending I'd be doing on data and apps would qualify me for something. Do I have this straight?

Full price for most smartphones is between $600 and $700.  The 2 year upgrade price is usually $100-$300, and you get an additional $30 off the already discounted price.  Verizon subsidizes the cost of new equipment very heavily to encourage you to sign a 2 year contract with them.
The reason you got $100 off your previous phones is that the New Every 2 credit used to be much larger.  This is the final time you'll be able to use the discount because the NE2 or "loyalty credit" has been phased out entirely.  From now on, everyone will pay the 2 year contract price when they upgrade.

Why won't apple allow current "AppleCare" holders upgrade to "AppleCare "? Doesn't this seem unfair for such a giant in the tech industry to not offer such an opportunity?

Sorry - not understanding. What do you mean by "upgrade"? When you purchase an Apple Product, you get AppleCare automatically - 90 Days of Telephone Support, and a 1-Year Warranty.
You can then purchase an AppleCare Protection Plan for Mac, iPod, and Apple TV, or AppleCare+ for iPad or iPhone.
AppleCare Protection Protection Plans can be purchased any time within the 1-year warranty period.
Apple+ must be purchased within 30 days of purchase.
AppleCare Protection Plan extends the warranty to 3 years for Macs, and to 2 years for Apple TV and iPod.
AppleCare+ extends the warranty to 2 years for iPad and iPhone.
There is no "upgrade"....You either purchase the extened warranty protection plan or you don't. And unlike most extended warranty plans, you are NOT required to purchase it at the time you purchase your Apple product.
    What's the beef here?

  • Upgrade seems to be hanging at Running upg/307/wwv/wwvupd2.csh

    Hi,
I am running the Portal 306 to 309 upgrade scripts in the following environment.
    OS - Solaris
    Database - 8.1.7.2
    9iAS - 1.0.2.2
The upgrade seems to be hanging at Running upg/307/wwv/wwvupd2.csh. It has been stuck at this point for the past 36 hours. The process list contains the following process:
/bin/csh -f upg/307/wwv/wwvupd2.csh -sn WEBDB -sp webdb@wdb -rsp webdb -cs wdb
Querying the v$sessions table shows that there are no current sql sessions
Anyone knows what is happening here?? Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks & Rgds,
    Rupesh

    Hi,
Upon inspection of the pupgrade script it was found that the
script upg/307/wwv/wwvupd2.csh was using SQL Plus to connect to
the portal demo schema (PORTAL_SCHEMA_NAME_DEMO). However, since
we had upgraded to portal 306 from webdb 2.2 we don't have such a
schema. The upgrade guide does not ask you to create the DEMO
schema before starting the process. Therefore the script fails at
    this point.

  • CS4 Web Premium Upgrade Price Seems Unfair

We own CS2, Macromedia Studio 8 and we have the CS3 Web Premium. The upgrade price to CS4 Web Premium is $599. This is the same price for someone upgrading from Studio 8 or CS2 Premium. What about the people who have bought each upgrade (not counting CS3.3) This upgrade price seems way to high. Just my two cents.

Are you complaining that it is too high, or that there should be different tiers of upgrades?
Adobe's policy has always been that you can upgrade from any of the last three versions. It is my understanding that this will be changing soon, and people who have upgraded more recently DO get a lower price. I believe the price to go from CS2 to CS4 will be $799 sometime next year. Since this is a new policy, they are giving people a few months to buy under the old policy.
If anything, this is the fairest thing I've ever seen a corporation do. They are making a policy more fair, while still not hurting the people who didn't know the change was coming.
That said, I do agree $599 is a bit steep for someone who just upgraded recently, especially for the Web package. The upgrade to CS3 Production Premium was $799, where the CS4 upgrade is $599...that seems fair to me (though they dropped Ultra from the package.) However, the CS3 Web Premium upgrade was $599 (or was it $499?) It does seem out of wack price-wise. The fact that Design Premium now includes Fireworks makes the Web Premium price even less attractive.
In your particular situation, it sounds to me like you have FULL licenses for CS2 AND Studio 8, and then an upgrade to CS3 Web. Basically, you have at least one license you aren't using (unless you're using it on another computer.) My advice would be to sell your CS2 or Studio 8 license, whichever is worth more these days. When I upgraded to CS3 Web Premium, I owned both Studio MX 2004 AND CS2 Premium licenses. I sold the CS2 license, and it almost paid for my Studio MX to CS3 Web upgrade.

  • Upgrade seems to have caused bind issues

I upgraded to APEX 3.2 today, and I'm finding some things that broke in my application. The installation of 3.2 went fine, then I switched to the APEX_030200 schema and enabled the APEX_PUBLIC_USER, bounced the webserver, and was able to get in. But two of my applications were missing. They just weren't there. I reverted back to 3.0 and did an export of those applications and re-imported them into 3.2. Now I am going through them and there seem to be a few problems.
I am trying to create a dropdown list as follows:
    select ADMIN_USERNAME d, ID r
      from APEX_ACCESS_CONTROL
    where ORG_ID in
       (SELECT ORG_ID FROM ORG_ENTITIES
          CONNECT BY PRIOR ORG_ID = MNG_ORG_ID
          START WITH ORG_ID = :G_USER_ORGID)
       and CLERK = 'Y'
order by ADMIN_USERNAMEThe bind variable is an application variable. If I use a hard value, the LOV works fine, but as soon as I change it out to a substitution variable, the dropdown comes up nulll - no values at all.
PS. I have double-checked, and the session state shows G_USER_ORGID with the correct value (populated on page 1 on login).
I didn't get any errors in the logs during the upgrade. This should work, but doesn't. Can anyone point me at a fix? I depend on these application variables a LOT and this application is mission critical.

Sorry, I that application build was the same one we used to import after it disappeared. I've tried three different LOV queries on that page. The one that works is:
    select ADMIN_USERNAME d, ID r
      from APEX_ACCESS_CONTROL
    where CLERK = 'Y'
order by 1This one doesn't work:
    select ADMIN_USERNAME d, ID r
      from APEX_ACCESS_CONTROL
    where ORG_ID in
       (SELECT ORG_ID FROM ORG_ENTITIES
          CONNECT BY PRIOR ORG_ID = MNG_ORG_ID
          START WITH ORG_ID =
          (SELECT ORG_ID FROM APEX_ACCESS_CONTROL
            WHERE ID = v('G_USER_ORGID')))
       and CLERK = 'Y'
order by ADMIN_USERNAMENor does this one:
    select a.ADMIN_USERNAME d, a.ID r
      from   APEX_ACCESS_CONTROL a
    where a.ORG_ID in (select ORG_ID from ORG_ENTITIES
           where MNG_ORG_ID = DECODE(:G_USER_ORGID,901,MNG_ORG_ID,:G_USER_ORGID)
         union SELECT ORG_ID from ORG_ENTITIES
           where ORG_ID = :G_USER_ORGID)
           and a.ORG_ID > 0
order by 1All three work just fine in SQL-Plus, but the two referencing the global variable don't work in APEX after the upgrade.

  • Adobe's Upgrade Policy Unfair - Buyer Beware.

I had an early version of Premiere, Version 6.1, from many years ago. I switch to Liquid Edition then, mainly because the DVD authoring was integrated and better. Recently, I decided to go back to Premiere for the AVCHD editing and the Liquid line is being dropped. I purchased the CS4 upgrade on 3/1. Adobe announced in early April CS5. I didn't feel it was fair to ask me to pay another $300 to upgrade to CS5 since I just paid $300 to upgrade to CS4.
I contacted Adobe and they could care less. I could have bought the CS4 upgrade on April 11th, one day before the CS5 announcement, and I would still have to pay another $300 to upgrade from CS4 to CS5.
Be careful when you upgrade - it may cost you more than you think.

Do you really want to belabor this argument?  Months ago, adobe stated on their web site that CS5 would require 64 BIT os.  Then more recently, they posted videos on their site showing  the Mercury Playback Engine on CS5.  Then they also told everyone (and posted it on their site too I think) that they were going announce CS5 on such and such a date.  And they have been pretty steady with an 18 month release schedule the past few iterations.  And they have always had a cutoff date and their has never been a sliding scale for upgrade pricing based on when you first purchased your qualifying product.  Honestly, if you did not know any of these things, you did not do much (any?) research before purchasing the product.  We live in the internet age.  It would have been easy to ask in this forum or several others before your purchase if anyone knew what Adobe's upgrade policies were because you were considering buying CS4.  I am sure you would have got as many posts telling you to hold off for a few weeks on that post than you have her telling you that you are full of it.
If you don't know what sour grapes are, it is an expression that we use in the US when someone thinks that they have been taken advantage of or treated unfairly but most others who are more objective and have nothing personally to gain/loose over the issue think that said person should simply upset at their own inadequacies.   http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/sour-grapes.html  I forget that this is an international forum.  Sorry for the US "expression".
The fact is that your post says "unfair policy" and "buyer beware" right in the tidal.  These are pretty strong statements.  You did not need to beware because the same thing has been going on for years.  Adobe's policy has not changed much in this regard.  This is much more harse than I don;t like the fact that they don;t have a sliding scale for upgrades.  What you are saying in your subject is that you were duped or tricked.  this is much more harsh than saying  "I would be ok with paying something towards the upgrade, just not the full $300".

  • 10.5.6 upgrade seemed to wipe out some application preferences

I had some minor issues after upgrading to 10.5.6. I have worked out most (hopefully all) of these issues. I am just wondering if there is something that i did incorrectly that caused this.
After upgrading to 10.5.6 I restarted when prompted by the software update utility. When my machine restarted everything seemed to be working fine. About 30 minutes later one of my apps was hanging so I decided to restart again.
When my machine restarted I lost my saved preferences in Firefox and Opera (e.g. default home page and whether or not to save sessions). This did not effect more import information like saved passwords or bookmarks. Eclipse (which i installed under ~) was in worse shape. OS X wouldn't even start it up - when i would try to start it a "not supported on this architecture" error message would pop up.
Is this an indication that I did something incorrectly? Or just a random happening?
    Carlos

Hello! It seems I have a similar problem. I upgraded to 10.5.6 a few days ago. Today morning, after turning the computer on from sleep, everything was working perfectly, however after few minutes while I was browsing the Internet with FireFox my hard drive started making "click - click" sound repeatedly, disabling me to do anything with my computer (the colorful spinning wheel appeared; it happened the exact same time when I clicked on a link in a news website). After powering off with holding the power button, I wasn't able any more to log in. I've managed to boot the Installation DVD and DIsk Utility found no hard drive.
After exchanging my hard drive (the old one is definitely broken - I was trying to use an external slot to try accessing it - unsuccessfully) I cannot any more boot the installation DVD. The DVD drive was relatively new, so it shouldn't cause any problems. The DVDs are also fine (no scratches, tried a couple of installation discs...). Holding "C" key for 30 minutes doesn't seem to work either... I only get the grey screen, with nothing on it...
At the moment I'm stuck, because I have the MacBook with grey screen and fans running at the full speed, which does not seem to read DVDs, though I can reset the PROM, as well as, boot it as a target and force-quit the disk with holding F12...
The worst thing is that I lost my data created over the last week... I hope apple will recognize that something is wrong with their update... If I get the bootable DVD to boot finally, I will write an update.
Greetings to everyone with the same problem.
    Chris

  • IPod software upgrade seems to have disabled my iPod

I plugged my iPod in and got asked if I wanted to update to the latest software. I clicked sure so now my iPod is apparently at version 1.2.2. Now none of my music or podcast show up on the iPod. I tried clicking the Synch and it chatted for a while then said it was done. Still no songs or podcasts. Based on the amount of memory available it looks like all my music is still on the iPod.
I guess I can restore but it but I should not have to do that. Either way I wanted to let someone know that tis may be a bug.
    Thanks,
    Joel

wow, im GLAD my ipod wouldnt update... it kept saying "the file is corrupt" so i came here to remember how to fix that (its happened b4)... but after reading this im just gona keep with the old version... besides it cant be that good of an update.
and to answer your question... "I wonder why Apple of all people would choose not to support a MS OS" ...its because apple *** *** through a straw and i only trust them with my music. not only that... but they seem like a company that doesent like to look back because im sure your ipod would be fine if you got a new computer with their newest operating system (whats it called leprosy? or leapfrog?... something like that)
too bad you cant just upgrade... nope! that would void your waranty!!!!

  • Aperture 3.3 library upgrade seems frozen

I updated to Aperture 3.3 last week and the updating of the library has seemingly frozen at 91% of step 7/7. I left it alone for about 3 days now without change. I forced quit and restarted a couple times before just letting it go. It seems to be doing something as it's using 90% of CPU. I'm guessing it is stuck on video? If so is there anyway to get in there to remove the video now that the upgrade has started?

You may have a corruption of the library that needs repairing, before you upgrade the library.
For many people it helped to "Force Quit" and to rebuild the library before trying to upgrade again.
To rebuild the database, hold down the  ⌥⌘-key combination, while double clicking your Aperture library. Then select "Rebuild database" from the "First Aid" panel.
If really a corrupted video should be causing the trouble, launch Aperture with the "Shift" key held down. This will defer the generation of previews, and probaly enable you to open the library in Aperture. Then delete the video from the library.

  • New downloaded upgrade seems worse

I just uploaded all available upgrades a few days ago, and the latest version of Safari seems SO SLOW, especially when opening a web site that has not been opened with this version. Anyone else noticing this?

    Hi Stephanie
It appears some Internet Providers DNS codes, which connect you to the Internet, are somewhat inefficient for Safari 4, creating slow page loading.
Usually, this is remedies by adding DNS server codes to your Network settings.
To add the codes, go to System Preferences>Network. Click on your internet connection - either Ethernet or Airport, then "advanced". In the DNS panel enter on separate lines the following OpenDNS codes: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. Select "OK", then "apply".
In the Network panel, if Ethernet or Airport (whichever you use) is not at the top of the list, click on the "gear icon" at the left bottom. Select "set service order". When the help box opens drag your connection type to the top of the list. Select "apply" when complete.
Since you just upgraded a number of items, go to the Finder: Applications>Utilities folder. Open Disk Utility. Select your HD on the left, then select "repair permissions". When complete, close Disk Utility and restart Safari.
Go to the Safari Menu>Reset Safari. Select "empty cache" and "history". Then, reset.
Let me know if that speeds things up.

  • Upgrade seemed to work!

I did all the usual stuff, cloned 10.7.4 to external drive, checked it worked, repaired permissions etc.
    So all good so far....
Connect to App Store and selected download of Mountain Lion and off it went......
Check a few times and download was chugging away....slow broadband
It was neally done and a message popped up saying lost internet connection (or something) do I want to CANCEL or RETRY.  Internet connection was fine as it was in use by another computer at the same time.
Selected RETRY but message just kept appearing.
Went into Launchpad where the Mountain Lion icon was, clicked on the image (it then said PAUSED), then clicked on it again and it rapidly completed the final download.
The Mountain Lion installer started up and I decided to keep going (remember already had a 10.7.4 clone backup so could go back if it failed),
Twiddled thumbs while watching it go through the upgrade process.
Finally, I got the typical successful software installation message that you get with Apple installs.
Repaired permissions, reconnected firewire drives, reactivated time machine....still ok
Checked all my apps and they are working ok as well.
Everything seems ok, just wondering if I should try and re-download Mountain Lion again and reinstall over the top of the existing install?

"Everything seems ok, just wondering if I should try and re-download Mountain Lion again and reinstall over the top of the existing install?"
    Is it broken?

  • 10.4.9 Upgrade Seems to Have Broken Sieve Filters in Squirrel Mail

I upgraded to 10.4.9 (thanks to all of Alex's good advice and excellent help), the upgrade went well after forcing an install of MIME::Base64 and Net::Server.
However, the Sieve Filters in Squirrel no longer work properly. To be exact, it looks like the filters themselves continue to work, but when you use a browser to go to the filter's page, it's blank.
My system has some tweaks due to a BuildSmart install and a few other modules, so this problem may only relate to my server.
Anyway, can someone suggest a place to start in tracking this down?
    From the httpd error log:
[Fri Mar 16 12:12:57 2007] [error] PHP Notice: Object of class ContentType could not be converted to int in /usr/share/squirrelmail/class/mime/Rfc822Header.class.php on line 61

    OK. I fixed the trouble.
Before the 10.4.9 update, I was running SquirrelMail 1.4.9a (I had upgraded using Alex's upgrade instructions at http://osx.topicdesk.com/downloads/). I had used Ian Butler's instructions for installing avelsieve at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=660096#660096
However, after the 10.4.9 upgrade, SquirrelMail was back to running 1.4.5.
So, I reinstalled version 1.4.9a and copied the old avelsieve directory from a pre-10.4.9 boot clone back-up I had into /usr/share/squirrelmail/plugins.
After running /etc/squirrelmail/config/conf.pl and re-enabling the avelsieve plugin, all is well.

No and those errors are no errors but warnings and as such in fact a bit overreacting. What it says is that a Call Library Node trying to load imaq.dll (which without path means to load it from the one of the Windows standard search paths where the system directory is also part of) has been redirected to load said DLL from the system directory. A rather strange message in fact as those are virtually the same for a properly configured Windows system. Bascially you can ignore this specific warning completely as it informs you of something that Windows will do anyhow, unless you start to copy and move DLLs that were originally installed in the system directory.
    What LabVIEW version is that?

  • "Quicktime 7.6.4 is vulnerable" keeps popping up. To upgrade seems free, but fine print says it eliminates the old, & I have to pay to be able to use the new!

How do I get rid of the "vulnerable" pop-ups, and is the 3 year old version really bad/inadequate. I'm suspecting that this is just a scare tactic to sell new plug-ins, and I am paranoid enough to believe that the mfgr. is probably creating "problems" to force me to pay to upgrade. What should I do?

I apologize for my confusing post above, but to be clear: '''the QuickTime player is completely free'''. You do NOT need to buy up to the Pro version. Ever.

  • Lion upgrade seemingly hangs after reboot at the "Installing" prompt

I ran the Lion installer in the InstallESD.dmg file located on the desktop of my fully functional 10.6.8 installation.
The first part where the installer does various things, including "Downloading additional components", went well and completed with a Restart button, which I pressed.
Then the linen texture appeared with the big white Installing prompt and the blue-white candy/progress bar. But nothing else happens.
I left it for ten minutes and then pressed the power button on my Mac Pro until the computer shut off. Then started the computer again.
But I come back to the linen background and the candybar prompt.
Must I really wipe the drive and clone back 10.6.8 and start over?
    Thanks for any ideas.
    /p

I have tried the following, all without result:
    - resetting the PRAM
    - verifying the checksum of the downloaded Lion file
    - installing on the bootdrive (SSD) to which I downloaded Lion (thinking that perhaps it must be installed on that drive)
    - installing on an external harddrive by upgrading a Snow Leopard system with all updates
    - installing on a second internal SSD by upgrading a Snow Leopard system with all updates
I'm completely at a loss and have no fraking idea what to do.
The reason I wish to upgrade is to be able to use Office for Mac which uses a Rosetta installer. Were it not for that I would happily have done a clean install. But since the upgrading goes so badly I guess I will have to buy the new Office.
    Gah.
