Upgrade to 10.9.3: AFP server issue
Upgrade to 10.9.3 : I had two issues:
- XSan volume has been changed to hidden, solved via chflags nohidden /Volumes/<vol>
- afp service seems to have forgotten its HOME env variable, it is not possible to connect via afp

how do I set the HOME env variable for the launchd.peruser (com.apple.netauth.user.gui) to the correct value ?
we have a few user configured in workgroup manager (all standard). It is possible to connect via smb.
The server has been running 10.9.2 so far in suitable and stable way prior to the upgrade to 10.9.3.
I found a temp. fix. Since
launchctl getenv HOME
did not return anything for user root I manually set
launchctl setenv HOME "/var/root"
and reloaded the AppleFileService with
launchctl unload/load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.AppleFileServer.plist
it was then possible to connect via afp from a remote host. But still on the server afp://localhost e.g. does not accept incoming requests (same error as above).

Hello.
I have some files on my afp server that will not delete. When I try to delete them, I am told that they are "in use". After I restart all the computers in the mac lab (to make sure that they "can't use" the file), I still get the issue. The files are not "locked" and I have full read/write/edit privledges.
Strangley, I can delete some files, but some will not.
Any ideas?
LeonardHi, I work with Joseph and I thought maybe I could help fill out a little of the picture here. We noticed that we had full access rights to the files (permissions were ok and there were no fs flags and no acls) and that if we used terminal level commands to access the files we could read/edit/delete them no problem but any of the machines accessing the files through AFP would give us this "file in use" error. Logging the affected users out of the AFP server and then back in didn't seem to have any effect, but after playing around for a while I noticed that if I deleted the metadata component of the file (easy to do since its on an XSan FS - I just deleted the ._ file of the same name) and then logged out any user that had trouble with the file and then logged back in I could edit the file again. Yet to determine if the problem comes back and I'd like to test on more than just a handful of files. So, I'd have your IT guys try and do that and see if it helps. For us at least, it doesn't appear to be a file locking issue, but rather an AFP server issue. Anyway, hope this is somewhat helpful.

Issue with AFP server dropping connections on 10.8.5 server 2.2.2
We are having issues with users getting dropped from their AFP server shares.
These issues did not start happening until we upgraded to 10.8.5 and server 2.2.2
the first symptoms were an occasional user would lose his / her active connection while copying files. They were unable to disconnect from the network shares without physically disconnecting the LAN or disabling the network on their system. Once the connection was removed they could reconnect to the network and establish their AFP shares again.
However this his escalated to every user losing connections to their AFP shares at the same time.
The server has no AFP error in the AFP error log however we are getting diskutil crash reports at around the same time. (See Below)
The server has
smalltree 1x6 8254 with latest drivers supporting a LACP bonded 6 pair connecting to an edgecore (LACP configured)switch.
small tree 10Gb card directly connected to an edit station.
onboard ethernet connected to switch in support of DHCP & DNS. (previous version of server would not see the bonded pair)
Two Accusys A12S2's
(we did not have this dropping connection issue before the upgrade to server 2.2.2 and OSX 10.8.5)
Users connected to any network connection to the server appear to be affected when the AFP shares are disconnected. Direcet connect, onboard ethernet port and Bonded pair connections)
diskutil verifies all shared drives appear to be ok. (All Green)

Problem saving a Photoshop file from an AFP server
Hi All,
Just want to know if some of you guys are experiencing this and how you solved it.
Basically we have an AFP server and OD services. All mac clients are bound to OD and are using the OD account for logging in. Most of the user are using photoshop. However when one edits a file and wanted to save/replace it, photoshop generates an error saying its locked forcing phothsop users to do file SaveAs and rename the file. We have been doing the AFP server and editing photoshop directly through the network for almost 1 and 1/2 years but not experienced this issues until later that we added more users/employees in our network and this issue came up
The error is
Could not save "Photoshop File.psd" because the file is locked. Use the 'Get Info' command in the finder to unlock the file.
We are able to create folders/files to where the photoshop is saving and other applications seems to save/replace files fine except for photoshop.
Has anyone encounter this and how did you solve it?I found the solution here, http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4644850#4644850 and the steps are as follows,
In Workgroup Manager (OS X Server) select the group you want to apply the setting to, the choose Preferences.
Choose the "Details" tab and add .GlobalPreferences.plist
Clear all the settings, and add a new key called NSUmask, then choose "integer" with a value of 2
Next time your users for that group log in and they save a file it will be rw-rw-r
The default umask for Macs is 022 (rw-r--r--), this changes it to 002. I didn't try manually changing the default umask on the individual workstations, but I assume that would work also.

My printer has been working well *. since I purchased it earlier this year. until about a week ago when I upgraded to the next level Instant Ink plan. Since then when I try to print the display on the printer shows a rotating circle with the word Printing. This remains for around 2 minutes, without printing anything, and then I get a message on the display that tells me that "The printer cannot connect to HP Connected". At the same time I get a pop up on my PC that "warns me" that the printer cannot connect to HP Connected and that this may cause my printer to stop printing. The terrible message concludes with the meaningless "OK" statement, having urged me to follow the printer's on screen display to make the connection. When I try to follow the instructions on the printer it merely confirms that the printer is connected. I usually cancel out of the setup and then, as if by magic, whatever I tried to print suddenly starts printing. So, my questions are?
1) Is this a common or at least know problem?
2) Is it caused by my having changed Instant Ink plans and if so what has HP done to cause this?
3) I have not knowingly changed anything on my system other than the HP Instank Ink plan so why does the printer no longer connect to the HP Connected server to update that system with details of my print usage?
4) Is there a fix/workaround that will prevent me from having to manually coax my printer to work again?
I have already used the HP Updates function and have reset/restarted both the wireless router and my PC.
* I do occasionally get messages saying that the scan function isn't available because it's lost connectivity but this seems to rectify itself without having to do anything else.Hello GaryG888,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
Thank you for the very informative post. With that great info I think I know what has happened. Over the weekend (24th, 25th & 26th) there had been Web Service server issues. As of right now, here is the fix and or workaround: Re: How do I correct the date on my HP Envy 4500?
Please follow up and let me know if this helps you.

Since lion upgrade iMac keeps looking for old server
Hi,
I have a NAS prior to Lion upgrade which was working perfectly. Now with the Lion upgrade the NAS (Sitecom) ther were some issues. I have reinstalled the NAs and had given it a new name. I can find the NAs now so thats not a problem.
But almost every hour I get 2 warning that he can not find the "old NAS", it really start annoying me and I've looked everywhere and I don't even find any link (Finder) towards it so I don't know what to do to get rid of this message, receiving it every hour twice really start getting on my nerves.
Sorry for th Dutch, but the message translates;
A problem has occured with connecting to the server 'VanBeeckNAS'
The server doesn't exist or is currently not available. Check the servername or the IP-address of the server, ...
Any help is highly appreciated.
PeterSame problem since lion. Not only can I not back up to the server it keeps looking for it several times on start up. Real annoying.

I'm running afp on a 10.4.9 server and I'm having some strange issues. I'm wondering if someone can help me troubleshoot this issue.
Due to some machine room issues, we had to shutdown and reboot the machine last weekend. After that, we've had issues with users saving to the afp server. For example we've had issues with users opening excel files and not being able to click "save" to save them. They must do a "save as". Also a host of temp files are saved within the directory as well... Also big files, often times users will have to download them locally, then make modifications then save to the server. We had no troubles previous to the restart.
Any suggestions?

"Dave Provine
I'm not that folks quite understand. The fix is to be sure that the UIDs are unique on the workstations. Of course they have to be unique on the server.
Every time you setup a new OS X workstation, the first user is UID 501, so if you happen to setup a bunch of workstations with just one user each, all of them will have the same UID. THAT is the cause of the save bug. You must change the UIDs on each user's computer."
"Dave Provine
This should work to change UID and permissions. From http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php/t-12077.html
Changing UIDs in the terminal is a simple NetInfo property overwrite:
sudo niutil -createprop . /users/userName uid XXX
(replace userName as appropriate and XXX with the new UID number)
Finding and changing UIDs across the filesystem is a one-liner command:
sudo find / -user UID -exec chown userName {} \;
(replace UID with the old UID number and userName with the new user name to associate file ownership.)" -
Error with a copy function after upgrading to patch 18 on the server
Hi experts,
I had the following error when I try to execute with trace in RSPLAN a copy function that was right and functioning over a workbook before upgrading to patch 18 in the server:
'Char. value of 0COSTELMNT does not correspond to value of block char. 623004'
The functions seems to be right also when I check the values but the error message is still there and over the workbook Copy function button.
Thanks,
DiegoTechnically, Oracle supports Oracle XE through that forum. At least that was the policy as I knew it a while ago.
With installation issues for XE and the like it's probably better to just post it there. Obviously a grey area and you may well get a hit or two here, but I think you should post these kinds of questions on the XE forum.
When it comes to Apex development questions you can definitely post them here. I know, I know, it really is a pain! But you want to post where you have the best chance of getting good help.

So...I created a Time Machine AFP Server connection when I first got Lion (to backup things wirelessly). Everything was working fine...but then I moved my modem/router to the home office, rather than the living room. Now my Mac can't find the AFP server. I'm assuming it's because the address changed. How can I find which address to set it to (it's connecting to an airport extreme) to correct this issue?
What we get in the error log for Calendar Server for example is:
2008-06-03 15:05:10+1000 [-] [caldav-8011] [AMP,client] User 'jamie' is not enabled with the 'calendar' SACL
2008-06-03 15:05:11+1000 [-] [caldav-8009] [AMP,client] Unauthenticated users not enabled with the 'calendar' SACL
Yet, a refresh doesn't have this error. It just seems that randomly it will decide not to authenticate for me (in this example). And seconds later it will authenticate.
I have authentication set as "Any method". If I try "Digest", I can't log in. If I try just "Kerberos" it behave as "Any method", complete with the above occasional errors.
Any ideas anyone? -
Snow Leopard: can't connect to AFP server anymore
We are using the MacServerIP (9.0) AFP server on a windows 2003 server. After updating from 10.5 to 10.6 we can not connect to this server using AFP anymore (connection failed). Connecting via SMB works fine.
Thank you very much!!I have the same problem logging in to an old Snap Server via AFP. "you entered an invalid username or password." is the error message. All was well in OS9 through 1.4 but this broke on 10.6 upgrade fro 10.4.
Apple support has not solved the problem. One thing I noticed is in the login dialog box there is no longer a list of options like there was in all versions up through 10.4, like sending password in clear text.
It is clear, that the two computers see each other given that the request for name and password come up for the target server. -
We have a server that was upgraded to Mavericks and OS X Server 3 and that's when the issues started. Folders becoming inaccessible, permission issues, file getting corrupted. We thought it was because it was an older Mac Mini, which was fine running Snow Leopard server, but the issues started after Mavericks. It was assumed part of the problem was the upgrade as opposed to a clean install. As this is a production machine, there was no time to wipe and reinstall. We also worried it was possible the hardware was going after running 24/7 for 3.5 years.
To be safe, we replaced it will a brand new Mac mini running a clean version of Mavericks server. It was fine for a few dys then the issues started creeping in. Permissions issues again, inaccessible folders, Windows shares getting kicked off and finally the log file filling up with errors (4,000+) have pushed us to the breaking point. We cannot get a full days work done on the server without having to repair something or reboot.
The error that comes up in the log and console is: Kernel: proc: table is full. It fills up the log.
DNS is not running and neither is open directory as this server is hosting a small network of users (less than 10) for file sharing of graphics files only. Some of the errors occur once a windows machine connects.
Any suggestions as to what could be causing these issues would be greatly appreciate as we are stumped. It ran fine under Snow Leopard it seems it's more Mavericks specific. The next step is to revert to Snow Leopardand pray that work.
Thanks in advance.
ChrisThis procedure is a diagnostic test. It makes no changes to your data. If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.
Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
sudo dtrace -n 'syscall::fork*:entry{printf("%s %d",execname,pid);}' | head | pbcopy
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting. You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Confirm. You don't need to post the warning.
If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Log in as one and start over.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered.
The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message.
The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there. -
Hi All,
I have just set up a new XServe as a file server. Our Open Directory Master was running AFP Directory Services and DNS.
I have now turned off AFP on the directory server, and connected the new XServe to this and started AFP.
All seems to be working fine, but on checking the system logs there is a load of stuff about servermgrd and no dns.
My question is, do i need to set up DNS on this server also?
Thanks,
Kevin

Posting the actual log entries would be useful. I suspect the DNS ones are the standard one which gets reported every 20 mins (or 30?) if you do not have a dns.
My question is, do i need to set up DNS on this
server also?
No, but if you have a local dns in the other server it would be beneficial to set the System Prefs-> DNS Server to the other servers IP and then add an entry in that DNS for the afp server. The afp server will then be able to resolve its name and will not issue the dns errors.

After the i-cloud server issue yesterday, November 26, 2012, my i-cloud mail account on my Macbook Pro stopped receiving mail. I changed some mail account settings to fix the issue, and was able to start receiving e-mails. However, all of my historical e-mails are gone. How do I retrieve all of my old e-mails from the server?
What settings did you change, what were the changes, have you visited www.icloud.com to see what mail is actually there? and do you have a backup?
