I just bought a I touch, and previously had a 30g ipod video which is now no longer working, so my main reason to upgrading. I opened the box plugged the itouch in to my notebook, and it updated my itunes, at the same time starting out fresh. Thus erasing all my videos, itunes songs, and ripped cds. I tried to run a search for any songs, and come up with nothing. Anyone have any issues upgrading to the itouch, and it erasing all your itunes starting from strach? And it sounds like I cant redownload any of my past purchases right? kinda lame if u ask me. Makes me want to buy cds from now on. You would think purchasing something online would have a record of it, and if it got lost or damaged, you could pull that info back, even for a small fee to down load all my past songs which Ive already purchased from itunes....

Well unfortunately if it was deleted then the songs are gone.
*There are a few things you can try if you havent already:*
There is many 3rd party software that allows you to rip music off of an iPod back to iTunes if you still have your library on your old 30g iPod.
Also by explaining your situation to apple they may allow you to redownload your previous purchases.
Other than that you seem stuck in a real bind mate.
And I know this isnt something you want to hear in this situation but... in the future you really should back up your stuff, its really easy to do and saves a LOT of hassle.

I was deleting a duplicate song from an album of an artist that I have a lot of music from and somehow iTunes deleted all the music from that artist. It's not supposed to do that especially when you're only deleting one song. Has anyone had this happen? It wasn't music that I bought from the iTunes store it was off cds.

It can not do that all by itself.
When you plugged it in, iTunes said 'Oh goody! You got a new phone! Would you like to make it just like your old phone?'...
You explicitly said 'Yes'.
You can't undo that.
No backup of the current state of the new phone was made. It was wiped and the last backup of your old phone was restored to it.
Anything you had on the new phone is gone.

You can reconnect with iCloud but I suspect they won't be there.

Woah there fella, if your files have been deleted and you still keep the same hard-drive you might want to use some undelete software first, such as http://www.officerecovery.com/freeundelete/ which I am not familiar with. Just make sure you recover the files into an external or different drive than the one you are recovering first... Otherwise it won't work. You could porbably restore most of your data this way, music and everything else.
Otherwise:
1. Open iTunes (latest version).
2. On the left ruler, under "Store", click on "Purchased".
3. On the bottom right of the screen click on "Download Previous Purchases".
4. Download whatever you like.

Correct. When you update via iTunes all synced media that is not in your iTunes library will be lost.

You should use your backup copy of your computer to put everything on the new computer.
The sync is one way - computer to ipod.
The ipod will sync with one computer at a time. Syncing to another will erase teh content from the ipod.

[Music files are still there, and I can play them on my computer directly from the iPod [just one track at a time] but not in the usual way, through headphones.]
On the Summary page of iTunes for the iPod, it shows 50-plus gigabytes of "Other" content and no music, which was not previously the case. I assume this is related to the problem.
I can bring up individual tracks on the iPod and see cover art, but cannot play the music.

I had the same problem and when I went to Settings I had 0 songs, even though they were obviously still there since I only had 15GB free on my 64GB device.
I decided to do a complete reset/restore of my 4th gen iPod Touch, Bad move! I'm ready to bang my head against the wall! I can put the device in recovery mode, connect to iTunes on my computer, and get it back to the setup screen, but when I go through the process again and try to do an iCloud backup I get the same reset/restore loop.
I could start from scratch, but I really, really, really don't want to go through all of my hundreds of apps, reinstall them one by one, etc. etc. etc.

If you restored from backup all the photos in your camera roll that were in the backp should be restored to our iPod. However, photos that are synced to the iPod are not in the backup. You will have to resyc them to the iPod. If the synced photos are no longer on the computer then the photos are lost.

Thanks for the feedback, the question is that it will syn all the folders that I have checked, and its total up to 6000 photos which was taking me one whole day to syn. I am seeking is there away that what have already in my Iphone will not be delected if I did not checked on the next syn, and only add in the new album that was checked.

I upgraded to iTunes 11 and I got all of the songs on my families' other computers. We all share the same AppleID, that's why this happened in the first place; but, I do not want their songs on my computer, how can I disable this without deleting the songs forever or making a new AppleID?

I did not upgrade to the newest version of Itunes on my PC. I just now went to my Library were Music is listed. Under that is Movies, TV Shows, ItunesU, etc. When I opened my music list, each song was in numerical order. If I have the songs listed alphabetically, they are in numerical order. If I change my listing to album or whatever, the first song is listed in numerical order just as I showed in my original question. They are also numbered on my Playlists. I have my favorites in two different playlists. One of them was minus a song. I was able to see which one was missing because they were in numerical order. I know I could have just copied to correct one into the incorrect one and just skipped the duplicates, but I chose to do it this way.
So, the songs are listed numerically in my music folder under Library on my older version of Itunes. But, on my newer version, they are not listed numerically under music. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?????
