Upgrading Cloud Service

Hi,
We currently have an Azure Cloud Service with multiple roles/instances running and we are planning to upgrade the software.  Assuming I have uploaded and deployed the new package.  What is the process for getting the current active (running) instance
updated?  Is this automatic or do I need to manually perform a "reimage" on each running instance?
Thanks

Hi Ultragc88,
Once you redeploy the *.cspkg by any of the 3 options the Fabric Controller will automatically deploy this new code to the instance and you don't have to re-image the roles. The deployment will happen Upgrade (interchangeably called Update ) Domain by Upgrade
Domain. So if there are 4 Instances spread across 4 Upgrade Domains the new deployment will be done first on the Instances (in this case just Instance_0 ) in the first Upgrade Domain i.e UD 0. Once it is up and send a signal back that it is alive, it will
be added back to the Load Balancer and the next set of Instances (in this case Instance_1) in the subsequent UD i.s UD 1 will be taken up for code upgrade. This will continue till all the UDs have been updated with the new *.cspkg.
One thing I would like to point out is that if you have any configurable values then put them in the *.cscfg and they can be updated right from the portal without requiring a re-deployment. But if it's a code change or any modification to the *.csdef then
it needs to be redeployed.
Let us know if you have any additional questions.

    Hi All,
I have a problem with my Toshiba 47L7463DG. The Cloud services (accessible from the Home button) stopped working after the recent firmware upgrade. Is there something I can do to roll back to the previous firmware version or fix this problem?

    Hello,
    I have the same problem.
I have above mentioned TV since 3 months So far, everything was wonderful.
Yesterday an update is installed automatically.
After that all stations were adjusted and I no longer get into the cloud menu.
So if I press the button with the "house", nothing happens.
Wi-Fi is enabled and network test was successful. The Red button also works. So I'll be over in the individual libraries.
Three times I set back the TV .Without Success.
Once I was able to get into the cloud menu. When I went out of it and want into the menu again nothing happened.
I also can not access the contents of my USB flash drive.
    The latest firmware is installed.
    Did someone have an idea?
    Thanks in advance

  • Upgrade your Cloud Service deployments to newer Guest OS families in 15 days.

I got this message from Microsoft. I upgraded my roles regarding this note. I still have a few deployments running I use for demonstration purposes. These are also affected by the OS Upgrade. Unfortunately, I don't have the code base anymore so I am not
    able to redeploy.
Question: will these remain to after June 2?
The Azure Guest operating system (Guest OS) family 1.x based on the Windows Server 2008 operating system is being retired. Effective June 2, 2014, you’ll
no longer be able to deploy new Cloud Services or manage your existing Cloud Services on Guest OS family 1.x.

    Hi,
Have you tried to update Guest OS from the azure portal? If you have not changed the OS version from your code and
ServiceConfiguration file, you could change it from azure portal. I suggest you could try those steps:
1.Log into the Azure Management Portal.
2.On the left pane choose Cloud Service, then choose the name of the service you want to modify.
3.Choose Staging or Production as appropriate. You need to configure each deployment independently.
    4.Choose CONFIGURE.
5.At the bottom of the page, find the operating system section.
The version of the Guest OS you are running for this Cloud Service is identified by the OS FAMILY and OS VERSION drop downs. A value of Automatic means that you are running the latest version of the chosen OS FAMILY. A value of Retired OS or something similar
means you are manually configured to use an older version of the Guest OS that is no longer supported.
If you do not take action at some point, your service will be force upgraded to a later Guest OS.
6.In OS FAMILY, select the operating system family you want to run.
7.In OS VERSION, select the version of the Guest OS you want to run. Set this value to Automatic to receive the latest Guest OS release for that operating system family as it becomes available. Setting it to any other value fixes that deployment
to use only that version of the Guest OS. You will need to manually reset this value in the future in order to update the Guest OS.
    Also, you could see this
    document.
    Please try it.
    Hope this helps.

    Will

  • ITunes M4A vs Amazon MP3, ripping in iTunes, cloud services

Sorry to ask 3 different questions in 1 thread, but they're all kind of related..
    1) I've been struggling for a while to decide which service to use for digital music. Until recently, I always bought physical CDs and ripped them to my computer at 320Kbps. Then, Amazon started to attract me with all of the deals they have and free credits, not to mention the Cloud player. So I started buying from Amazon. I also had some iTunes credit, which I used and was surprised to find quite a difference in quality. Both are 256Kbps, but Amazon uses MP3, while iTunes apparently uses AAC M4A files. The thing that stands out to me is that the audio is louder and clearer.
Has anybody else noticed this? Everywhere I look online people say there's no difference in the two, but I swear there is. If you download the same song from Amazon and iTunes then listen to them back to back at the same volume, you should notice the difference. Preferable some kind of rock song with louder music where it may be a big harder to make out the lyrics. It's not so much "quality", like the MP3s sound "bad" compared to them, or are missing parts of the audio. It's just that the M4A files are louder and seemingly clearer, making it easier to understand lyrics. It's different than just turning up the volume, the words really stand out more in an M4A file.
So is it just me, or is AAC really that much better than MP3? The 256kbps M4As  from iTunes even sound better than the 320kbps MP3s I've always ripped from my CDs via Windows Media Player. I've not, however, compared to the 320kbps MP3s from Google Play, maybe I will try that sometime.
    2) Assuming that it's better, that means I need to re-rip my entire CD collection. Will ripping within iTunes to M4A 256kbps give me the same quality as if I bought the file from iTunes and downloaded the file? Also, it looks like you can rip all the way up to 320kbps. Is it even worth it with AAC files, or will I likely not notice a difference over 256kbps?
    3) Finally, cloud services. This is the one that has me the most confused. I have 2 goals really: #1, be able to listen to all of my music on my work computer in addition to my home computer and #2, have access to all of my music in some cloud service to access on my Android phone and Android tablet. I have 3 main services to chose from, Amazon, Google, and Apple, each with pros and cons.
    Amazon
Pros - lower prices, lots of sales and free credits, all MP3s purchased there are automatically added to my Amazon Cloud, as well as any albums that have the "AutoRip" feature, Amazon Cloud Player seems sufficient both on my desktop and mobile devices.
Cons - lowest audio quality out of all services, can only store 250 personal songs for free, $25/year to upgrade to 250,000 songs
    Google
Pros - lower prices than iTunes and sales, but not sure if they're as good as Amazon, all MP3s purchased there are automatically added to my play library
Cons - the desktop web client and mobile app aren't very good, IMO. You don't have much choice over how to view/organize the music. Amazon Cloud player seems better in every way.
    iTunes
Pros - best audio quality, iTunes Match for $25/year to have my entire iTunes library in iCloud, including songs not purchased from iTunes (no size/# limit that I'm aware of), iTunes desktop app works fairly well and could be installed on my work computer and play my entire library with iTunes Match
Cons - highest prices, no client for Android devices, iTunes Match costs $25/year
(if I left off any pros/cons, please point them out and I'll add them to the list)
So here's my predicament: I want to start ripping all of my CDs and making all of my digital purchases in iTunes, mostly because of the superior audio quality. But, doing it this way I'll have no good cloud option for my phone and tablet. I could pay for the Amazon Cloud Pro to be able to upload my entire library there, but I would lose the quality of most files (they would match the files with their versions). I could upload my library to Google Play, but I would lose the quality there as well AND I hate their web client and mobile app.
Alternately, I could start purchasing all of my stuff from Amazon. Then, I could pay for iTunes Match to upgrade all of my songs to the better quality files, but I still couldn't use it for cloud-purposes, and it seems the only way to get the files onto your computer is to delete the source file then download it from the iCloud, but a lot of people are saying that's risky.
So, I just don't know what to do. Is there something I'm missing here that would offer me a better solution? I wish Amazon would just start offering better quality audio files, that would solve everything.
Note: I'm aware I could just store my music ON my Android phone and tablet, but 1) that would take a lot of manual work and upkeep and 2) I wouldn't have enough space on my tablet for my entire library (or on the phone without buying a 32GB microSDHC card). So, I really don't want to go that route.

AAC is a more modern codec than MP3 and thanks to advances is able to be more efficient at compressing audio than MP3. This means that at the same bit rate e.g. 256Kbps AAC will retain more of the original quality than MP3 at the same bit rate. Most of the articles I have seen say that roughly a 256Kbps AAC file would be equivalent in quality to a 320Kbps MP3 file meaning the AAC file is up to 25% more efficient.
You could if you wish rip CDs at 320Kbps AAC and that in theory would sound even better compared to a 320Kbps MP3 file. However for most people listening on a portable media player (aka. iPod) with standard earphones you would not be able to tell. In a home playing through your HiFi speakers then you might be able to tell the difference.
By the way, it is now possible to rip all your CDs in Apple Lossless format meaning it is exactly the same quality as the original CD, and still have iTunes automatically convert to AAC when copying to your iPod/iPhone. This way you get full CD quality in your home, but use a smaller slightly lower quality file on your iPod/iPhone.

  • Can't publish to Azure Cloud Service from Visual Studio 2013

I have a VS project that I upgraded from VS 2012 to VS 2013. I can run it locally, and had no issues publishing to Azure when I was using VS 2012. When I attempt to publish the upgraded app to an Azure Cloud Service that already exists, I am getting this
error.  Note that I have checked the Service Config files and did a search on the entire solution and can not find any reference to "LocalStorage1" anywhere in the Project or Solution. I have another VS 20113 Project that publishes just fine
to Azure Cloud Service. Any ideas on how to fix this?
    PUBLISH ERROR:
Windows Azure could not find the resource LocalStorage1 in the service package. To upgrade the deployment, you must add the resource. Otherwise, perform a new deployment.

That's actually what I meant in my first post. When publishing to a new service, it is fine, because the deployment does not have to compare what is already there (it is a new service, so nothing is there) and what is in your package. But while upgrading
a service, bunch of settings have to match between an existing service and the package you are trying to upload. So the error you got wasn't about you having something extra in your package, but having something extra in your existing service and missing in
the package you were uploading. Hope that helps.
Anyway, please move this question to cloud services forums (this one is for web sites only), as there are experts in that area and they might be able to help you better.
    Thanks,
    Petr

  • Azure cloud services vs Dedicated servers

I have been searching for an article about advantages/disadvantages about using cloud services (Azure in this case) or a dedicated server but have not found anything concrete. What I see is that there are dedicated servers with much more capacity (8MB RAM,
2 x 2 TB HD´s, 4-core CPU, for example) than Azure VM´s at a much lower price and at the same time I see that there is an increase in cloud services usage. What other aspects should I consider besides price to decide to move to the cloud (Azure VM´s in this
case) instead of a dedicated server?
    Best regards, JORGE MALDONADO

    Hi,
In Azure, you can create multiple VMs in a cloud service and the VMs in the same cloud service share the same public IP address. If you want to access
the VM from external, you need to create endpoints and open the related ports in firewall. You can also manage incoming traffic to the public port by configuring rules for the network access control list (ACL) of the endpoint to ensure
    safety.
Azure charges an horly price that is based on the VM's size and OS, and the prices include Windows Server licensing fee. If you don't want to use
a VM, you can shut it down to the stopped (deallocated) status and you won't be charged for it.
In addition, you can resizing the VM to a larger/smaller one as your need. (Note: the data on the temporary driver would be lost after resizing)
Furthermore, for Cloud Services, when you deploy two or more role instances in different fault and upgrade domains, your Internet facing roles will
have external connectivity at least 99.95% of the time. For all Internet facing Virtual Machines that have two or more instances deployed in the same Availability Set, you will have external connectivity at least 99.95% of the time.

  • Publish cloud service fails from Visual Studio 2013 Update 4: Published Asset Entry for Image Microsoft.Azure.Diagnostics_PaaSDiagnostics_europeall_manifest.xml not found.

I have a cloud service project with two roles (service and worker). In Visual Studio 2013 Update 4 when I choose "Publish..." from the "Solution Explorer",  it opens "Microsoft Azure Activity Log" and quickly terminates.
    Here the log:
9:43:47 AM - Applying Diagnostics extension.
9:44:09 AM - Published Asset Entry for Image Microsoft.Azure.Diagnostics_PaaSDiagnostics_europeall_manifest.xml not found.
All works fine when uploading the package and updating from https://manage.windowsazure.com/. It only fails from within Visual Studio.
What can I do to get it working?

I have the same problem with our Azure project. Two web roles (service and worker). Just updated from SDK2.2 to SDK2.5 and Visual Studio 2013 Update 2 to Update 4. The main reason behind this was to move from log4net to WAD and in doing so, of course directly
move to the new diagnostics version.
Now, I get the same error message in Visual Studio:
11:45:24 - Checking for Remote Desktop certificate...
    11:45:25 - Applying Diagnostics extension.
11:45:45 - Published Asset Entry for Image Microsoft.Azure.Diagnostics_PaaSDiagnostics_europeall_manifest.xml not found.
With my small testing project - also two roles (service and worker) - everything is fine. However, I'm looking for a solution to make by existing production service working.
Also the test project shows no Microsoft.Azure.Diagnostics_PaaSDiagnostics_europeall_manifest.xml,
but this is no problem - so what's the meaning of or solution to this error messages?
    What I found so far:
I deployed the Azure project from the same development environment to another Azure test service: Deployment
showed no errors and the service is running fine! So the problem is not with the source, the development environment, library dependencies etc.
Trying Azure cmdlets for PowerShell also work fine for the new service and fails for the production service with almost the same error message:
    Following http://blogs.msdn.com/b/kwill/archive/2014/12/02/windows-azure-diagnostics-upgrading-from-azure-sdk-2-4-to-azure-sdk-2-5.aspx
    I tried:
    PS C:\> Set-AzureServiceDiagnosticsExtension -StorageContext $storageContext -DiagnosticsConfigurationPath $public_config -ServiceName $service_name -Slot 'Staging' -Role $role_name
VERBOSE: Setting PaaSDiagnostics configuration for MyWebRole.
Set-AzureServiceDiagnosticsExtension : BadRequest : Published Asset Entry for Image
    Microsoft.Azure.Diagnostics_PaaSDiagnostics_europeall_manifest.xml not found.
    At line:1 char:1

The problem seems to be related to those service configuration parts in the cloud which are not replaced
by a new deployment... So what are possible reasons or fixes for this behaviour?

  • Alternatives to Notes.app that will sync WITHOUT a cloud service

I am looking for viable alternatives to Apple's Notes.app to keep and sync notes between my iPhone 4s and my Macbook Pro but THAT DO NOT REQUIRE ANY CLOUD SERVICES.
Prior to OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion this was possible.  However, Mountain Lion removed the ability to use iTunes to sync Notes between devices (with or without cable) and now requires "cloud-type" connectivity/services.  While I like the new Notes interface in Mountain Lion Notes.app  I bemoan the loss of syncing by cable/iTunes and forcing the use of cloud servcies upon us.
For me personally I want to sync these devices by cable and not via iCloud, IMAP or any service that resides outside of these physical devices. That's my personal preference, so let's not use this discussion to debate the pros and cons of the "cloud" way of doing things (and hopefully we will not divert into a cloud vs. no-cloud cat fight).
What I really want to find is some kind of Note application to replace the functionality of Notes on the iPhone 4S (and maybe other iOS devices) and the Macbook Pro that will allow syncing between devices by cable and that does not require cloud services to sync between devices.
I have read a little about Chronos "SOHO Notes" for the Mac, which apparently requires it's companion "NoteLife" for the iPhone. But there seems to be few other offerings, or I cannot find them.
Does anyone have hands-on experience with these or other products?
Does anyone have pointers to specfic product recommendations?
It might be nice to find some open source applications rather than commercial.
    Thanks very much.

Ok, I thought of something. Haven't done it yet, but will when I "re upgrade" to mountain lion (I downgraded back to Lion when I noticed the issues with notes. It really is a dealbreaker for me.)
This isn't ideal, but it's what I'm going to do.
Contacts (so far) can still be synced locally. Each contact has a "Notes" field. What I'm going to do is create a group in my contacts called "Notes", and when I have a note, I'll just create a new contact for it. I'll put the title for the note in the "Company" field, write the note in the "Note" field, leave the rest blank probably, assign it to my "Notes" group in contacts, and that will be my new "non-cloud notes app"
Again, its not ideal, but I think it'll do.
Apple, please dont *^%! around with the rest of the syncing apps. A cloud OPTION is nice. But it's not practical for a lot of people. This almost got me to switch to Android, becuase if I was going to be forced to sync through clouds, I no longer had a reason to stick with Apple products.

  • 2 Web Applications on One Cloud Service

    Hi,
I know there is information out there on this because I have come across it before, but unfortunately I cannot find it now so I will ask the questions here. I see a post about running applications on different ports within a cloud service, I am not sure
if that is the same thing that i am talking about.
    Anyway, here is my question.
    - Can I run two web applications in one cloud service?
    - If I can, is it possible to update each web application separately or do I need to do a full deployment each time one of the web applications needs to be updated.
    - If I can, is it possible to have two different domain names for each web application within the application?
If all that is possible, how do i do it? In Visual Studio, do i just right click my solution and click add new project, and then just deploy.
Many thanks in advance for any comments or feedback.
    David

Yes, you can run multiple web applications on a single web role.
Read more about it at - http://www.wadewegner.com/2011/02/running-multiple-websites-in-a-windows-azure-web-role/
About deployment, you wont be able to update your web applications individually as you will need to upgrade your entire service with deployment package.
About domain names, as mentioned in the article - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/azure/gg433110.aspx
If you must host different websites on one web role with several users, you should use the VM role and configure the IIS isolation boundaries that are
necessary to provide appropriate security for each site.

  • Backup Cloud Service

    Hello there,
I have to upgrade a LightSwitch application running in a Cloud Service on Azure. The upgrade itself is not a problem, the thing is I have to backup the Cloud Service and in the case something goes wrong then restore the backup.
I've found this for the DB, but nothing on the Storage Account or the Cloud Service itself.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sF10wAgrnbI
    Which strategy do you recommend?

    Hi,
In this case you can try to communicate with the other team. As pointed out earlier, there're tools helping your backup storage, but there's no tool that can back up cloud service. But since you don't want to write any code, that probably means you don't
want to modify your cloud service? From my experience, you can use the reimage feature to change an instance to its original point (when the service was first deployed). It can be considered as a kind of backup. Please check
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsazure/gg441292.aspx
for more information. But if you want to add/modify features, then it is critical for you to communicate with the other team. They can tell you which version of the code is correct, then make sure to put the source code under source control.

  • Configure commonly used settings for a cloud service

    Hi All,
Have a question regarding Azure Cloud Service.  If I change a cloud service setting (Cloud Service -> Configure) in the portal, does the change persist if or when an instance is re-imaged?  For example, if I change the "DatabaseRetryCount"
parameter from 5 to 10 and save it, this change will update the runtime configuration.  However, when Azure rebuild this role, is this change get carried over?
    Thanks

In azure cloud services nothing is persistent, meaning that every time role instances are restarted or created, it will be created from the scratch and will pick up only those settings which you either have done in the role start up or defined as a start
    up activity.
About azure cloud service configuration files, i.e. cscfg - you can specify the settings similar to what you define in web configuration file of your application, these settings can be read at run time and can be reffered in your custom code. If you add
/ update any setting from the portal - you should also do similar in cscfg file in your solution so that next time you upgrade the deployment, the updated settings will be deployed.

  • Unable to connect to VM's in new cloud service via express route

We have changed our express route setup, initially we had an express route via London, but we have added a second one via Amsterdam and removed the one via London. All existing and new vm's in the different vnet's have connection to our local datacenter,
but as soon as we create vm's in a new cloud service the published routes don't seem to be picked up and the machine are only reachable in their local vnet on azure.
Does anyone have an idea where to look, it looks like the route publishing does not seem to work correctly, but it is strange that new vm's in existing cloud service do work correctly. BGP peering and vnet have been provided access via the expressroute and
    all have status provisioned.

    Hi Syed,
When I try to connect to a new vm via rdp or try to do a tracert to the machine (with firewall turned off on the vm) I don't get a response (traffic is routed via the express-route correctly). If I do a tracert to an ip on the on premise network
from the vm in question the trace is directed to internet instead of to the on premise network via the express route.
the new cloud services were created in the same region as the working cloud services and the vm's are also in the same vnet/subnet as the working vm's. If I delete a vm (keeping the disks) from a new cloud service and redeployed it in an existing cloud service
I can reach it again via the internal ip.
We have checked the route publishing and the correct routes are published to the express route/vnet.
When I check the provisioning of the vnet's via get-azurededicatedcircuitlink all the vnet's in question are listed as provisioned.
I'll try to remove the bpgrouting for the original expressroute this evening to see if that helps.
    kind regards
