Upgrading disk capacity in X4100

Hi
I have a X4100 with two 73Gb SAS drives in a RAID1 set. I'd like to see if I can upgrade the disks to the newer 146Gb disks now available without rebuilding the servers and losing the data. I have upgraded the BIOS and LSI firmware to the most current version. If anyone out there has experimented with this then if you could share your experience I would be grateful.
I have tried the following:
Removed the secondary 73Gb disk and replaced it with the 146Gb disk, used G4U to try to clone the information. G4U would not recognise the disk as it is using the LSI raid drivers so it would not copy.
Then tried to rebuild the array using the LSI utility, this worked and I then put in the other 146Gb disk in the primary slot and synchronised. This all worked but still kept the old size and the raid utility would not let me create another raid volume using the same disks (not that surprising really).
The next steps would be to break the set and then clone the disks and try again but I'm still not convinced this would work as if I tried to create a new 146Gb array then it would delete all the data on the disks.
Does anyone have any suggestions to try?
Clearly I can just rebuild the servers completely but I'm trying to avoid doing this as I'd eventually like to do this process on some of my production servers, this would mean that I can avoid other expensive disk options until next year.
Cheers
Adrian

Sorry, but I think you are trying to do something that is impossible. By definition, a RAID 1 mirror set has to have identical disks in it, so even when you introduce a larger disk into the set, it will appear to be the same size as the primary disk.
What you could do is add a third disk to the mirror set, have it sync, then break the mirror, remove the first two disks, put in your new two disks, create a mirror set with the two new disks, establish the size is correct, then 'dd' (disk to disk block copy) the third disk's contents to the new mirror set.
This would, however, require downtime, perhaps significantly.
just a thought....

  • Ipad disk capacity/space decrease

After I update my ipad from 4.3.5 to 5.0, my disk capacity (total disk space) has decreased 1GB in total. anyone have solution to this??

Same boat. I was part of the beta, running it on AppleTV, iPad2, and five or six iPhone 4's. Bluetooth stack is the devil. AppleCare is your friend.
A read-only partition IOS was unable to over-write/delete at the time of the upgrade appears to be one on the list of things that could of happened. There have been a lot of CSS injection attacks, and the PDF exploit earlier on in the lower versions. There's some other stuff, but over all it's pretty secure. I found out about both those problems months before Apple released notice about them/started working on the patch - Somewhere around 4.2.6 - 4.2.8, Verizon thought I was a liar and I had to pay for 200 bucks worth of data charges, and I'm still fighting with iTunes over about 120 in charges. (Ever notice how when you type a password the last letter shows for a few seconds? They either had a VPN and were watching, or read it from device memory via keyhash or an insecure plaintext file saved with my password)
    Anyways:
Look in your diagnostic logs under Settings, General, About, Diagnostics & Usage, and then Diagnostic Usage Data.
You might see a lot of logs listed with awdd_, or LatestCrash, or a bunch of other .plist related logs. See if you see anything in there that does not look normal. A lot of kernel panics/crashes is a good indicator of a bigger problem. You can also see in some of the logs a list of different libraries that were loaded, being used, threads, etc.
I honestly haven't come across a device yet that wasn't either A) Jailbroken or "Rooted" (without users knowledge, then they sandbox and/or use a library (libphide I believe it was) that hides/restricts everything from you. Turning on debugging in safari can show you when css attacks are attempted. Leaving java, cookies, bluetooth, and wifi off can help, but if someone wants in, well.. It's far from impossible.
B): MobileMe/iCloud replication is/was corrupt. I've had it replicating my push replications, downloading the same thing over and over then sending it back to the server again, eating up the "Other" Catagory (Documents and Data option in iCloud). Turning everything off to iCloud except find my iPad, deleting everything from the iPad by hand first (sounds silly, but you'd be surprised). then going to www.icloud.com, do a remote wipe, then do a manual recovery from iTunes and try reinstalling.
If that doesn't help to be honest you'll need to bring it to the AppleStore.
If want to take a screen shot of your log list of any of the ones showing crashes (probably will be several since it's rather long) i'll be glad to let you know if anything looks out of line. I've unfortunately got too much experience with problem children.
Good luck if I don't hear from you, my 64gb is showing 58.1 total capacity with 57.8 available on a "setup as new device" with no iCloud association as of yet.
I've replicated the problem manually on purpose on another device, and the "Read only" partition is/can cause this problem.

  • My iMac will not boot up from the Leopard upgrade disk nor will it eject it.

My iMac is very slow and sluggish.  Followed online instructions to use the Disk Utility to run repair.  After doing so it told to reboot my system from the install disk and then run the Disk Uitility to run repair from it.  I put in my Leopard upgrade disk and tried to reboot.  I get the chime and  the Apple logo and hear the disk trying to be read, but after about 5 minutes my iMac shuts completely off.  I have tried to eject the disk using all the methods found in the community and nothing works.  I want to try my orignal Mac OS X install disk to see if that works.  My computer is about a 2007 model.  It worked great until just a couple days ago.  Frankly I can't afford to take it in so I will have to figure this out on my own with your help. :-(

I cannot open terminal.  When booting I get the gray screen with the Apple logo and the twirling comb goes for a while and shut the computer completely off.
    I got into the single-mode user and learned the following: disk1s3: I/O error.  SAM Multimedia: Read & Write failed, SENSE_KEY = 0x03, ASC = 0x02m ASCQ = 0x00.
Singleuser boot -- fsck not done
    Root device is mounted read-only.
If you want to make modifcations to files: /sbin/fsck -fy
    /sbin/mount -uw /
I typed in the drutil eject and got:
    SAM Multimedia: Read & Write failed, SENSE_KEY = 0x03, ASC = 0x02m ASCQ = 0x00.
Library not loaded.  Reason: not suiteable image found.
    It did find:
    /system/library/rivateframeworks/installserver.framwork/versions/a/installserver :  unknown file type, firfst eight bytes: 0xCA 0xfe 0xba 0xbe 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x04 Trace/BPT trap.
I have tried holding the left mouse key, the eject key and nothing happens.  To bad I can't pull the
    thing out with tweezers.
So where do I go from here?

  • How can I install after a hard drive failure with only upgrade disk?

I've been using Photoshop since 1998 but my HDD recently suffered a complete failure and I've had to change the drive. Unfortunately, I don't have my original Photoshop disk, only a CS2 and CS5 upgrade disk (with both serial numbers). Is there any way round this problem? Many thanks in advance for any replies.

    Welcome to the forum.
My upgrade path started with Ps version 2.5. That was the last full version, that I had. All the rest were upgrades from there, though to CS 2.
When I went to install CS 2, I was asked for the CS version. I had both the upgrade disc and the S/N (my S/N's went through a couple of iterations, over the decades). In my case, the CS version disc was inserted, found and the installation went smoothly.
Now, while I have CS 5 (and 5.5 and 6), I never installed CS 5, it was just part of the upgrade path, to get me to CS 6 at the end. With my CS 5 S/N, CS 6 installed fine.
That was what worked for me, and I hope will work for you too. Keep that CS 2 disc handy, as you might need to insert that into the multi-drive, at a point in the CS 5 installation.
The one worry that I would have, with an HDD failure, would be Activation, as you probably did not Deactivate Ps, before that failure. For that, should you be up against your allowed Activations, you will likely want to call Adobe Customer Support, and explain your problem. They should be able to reset the Activations, and help you.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • I can't get Macbook Pro DVD drive to read my Windows 7 upgrade disk.

I have a 15" Macbook Pro running OSX 10.6.8.  I have been trying to upgrade the OS in my VMWare Virtual Machine from XP to Windows 7.  However, when I insert the upgrade disk, it just spins for a few minutes and then tells me the disk is a blank disk.  I  tried it with the drive tied to the VM XP OS, but that did not work and got the same result.  I then tried the disk in a PC I have and it seems to work fine there.  Also, I have tried other disks in my Mac drive (e.g. DVD movies) and they seem to work as well.  I am not quite sure where the problem is.  Any ideas?

  • I want to install Windows 7 in bootcamp on my imac with Lion 10.7, but only have a Windows 7 upgrade disk.  I also have a full Vista.  Can I install in bootcamp using the Windows 7 upgrade disk?  If so, what do I need to know about how?

    Hi,
I want to install Windows 7 on my imac in bootcamp.  I have a windows 7 upgrade disk and a full vista disk.  Normally on a PC I would install Vista, then upgrade to Windows 7.  I see that bootcamp 4 only supports Windows 7.
Can I install the Windows 7 upgrade disk without first installing Vista?  Will this work in bootcamp?
    Thanks,
    Jim

Install 7. Don't bother with applying drivers and such, just reboot again from DVD and install again, it will see the existing system and this time activation will be possible.
Vista is mess, takes longer etc. Hope you have SP1 version of 7. And for Vista, only SP2+ are even supported now, by MS.

  • How can you use Win 7 upgrade disk if Boot Camp 4 doesn't support XP or Vista?

I've just purchased a Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade disk to upgrade my Win XP Pro. I haven't installed Lion or Boot Camp 4 yet but am concerned that if I need to reinstall Win 7 in the future the upgrade disk will require that Win XP Pro be installed first.
If  my Win XP Pro isn't supported and can't be reinstalled in Lion/Boot Camp 4, does anyone know what my options would be?
Can't get to Microsoft tech support without having a post-install product ID and their forums don't seem to cover this specific question for Mac/Boot Camp users or VMWare/Parallels users. I'm hoping that once activated that might be enough to turn the upgrade disk to a full version for reinstalling, but I'm not betting on it.
Any help appreciated before I permanently remove my XP Boot Camp partition for a clean install of Win 7 Ultimate.
    Thanks

  • How do I reinstall Lion if I get a new hard drive?  My mac came with Leopard and I cannot find my upgrade disk for Snow Leopard

My MacBook Pro originally came with Leopard.  I have the OS and Applications disks for Leopard but I cannot find my upgrade disk for Snow Leopard.  I would like to perform a clean install of Lion on the new hard drive and restore some data from my Time Machine backup.  I am not looking to restore the current image to my new hard drive.  I have not yet removed the exisiting hard drive nor have I wiped my data.

The only way to do that is to buy a New SL Retail DVD. Or you could buy the Lion Install USB thumb drive from Apple for $69.
You must have SL installed to then install Lion or have a thumb drive with the Lion installer.
You could also create a Lion USB Recovery thumb drive using Lion Disk Assistant. But you need to have Lion already installed and the Lion RecoveryHD Partition on your drive to make the Recovery thumb drive.

  • I need help on my MacBook Pro. Recently I've deleted another partition of my disk from the disk utility and I found out that my disk capacity wasn't get into the normal one which is 750GB. Meanwhile I installed window 7 into the partition disk.

I need help on restoring my disk capacity back to normal. I installed window 7 into the partition disk through bootcamp and I deleted it from disk utility. After I erase the partition disk,I get my capacity to 499GB but not 750GB. Do I need to reinstall my MacBook or something to do with the restoring?

You shouldn't do it. You have to erase the Windows volume with Boot Camp Assistant, so it will restore the space onto the OS X volume and that volume will have 750 GB.
As you did it with Disk Utility, you have to resize your OS X partition manually:
    1. Open Disk Utility, select your hard disk at the top of the sidebar, and go to Partition tab.
    2. You will see a bar with Macintosh HD. You have to click it at the bottom right corner and drag it to the end of the bar, so Macintosh HD will use all the space of the hard drive, and press Apply.
    3. Close Disk Utility and your OS X partition will have 750 GB

  • Can I Install Windows 7 On 27" Imacs (36 of Them) With The Upgrade Disk?

    So basically, we have a 36 station iMac 27" lab, with 1 Mac Pro and 15 2.8 duo and 2.53 i5 MBP's.
We purchased the Windows 7 upgrade disk(by we I mean the "lead" tech guy)which normally shouldn't be a problem.
However as many of you know, the GPU drivers don't quite work out with 7, so you need to follow the workaround provided by Apple. Apple needs you to have the regular install disk that is recognized by Bootcamp.
All we can do is set it to start from disk after XP is installed.
So can we do anything? Is Apple going to update bootcamp so that we can just flat out install it? In the meantime, is there a workaround, can we trick bootcamp into reading an upgrade disk.
    Thanks for the help.

i dunno about upgrade disc. but i upgraded from windows vista to windows 7 ultimate (32bit and 64bit with clean install) with a full installation disc with upgrade option selected. there is 1 issue i faced when installing, fooling me that its a failed attempt at first. maybe this is the problem most of us is having. i have boot camp 3.0 installed in fact.. boot camp 3.1 is not for me. i don need that. this is the problem while installing, the screen will just go blank after the windows 7 finishes install... but the main thing is i can still press the caps lock on and off. 1st i thought it is a failed attempt. to resolve this, enter ur username (actually windows is asking for ur username), and press enter... now hard restart the imac (press and hold the power button). right when the white screen disappear, press f8 button for optional boot selection. choose "safe mode", and wait. if a screen appear saying that the installation cannot continue with safe mode. restart the imac until u reached the blank screen again where u have to insert ur username. i did this actually, i did a lot of clicking and enter, and entering my username. and restart the thing again, press f8 to safe mode. until i go into safe mode successfully. when i am in safe mode, i go to device manager and deleted the graphic card (mine radeon hd4850), in fact that is the windows driver for hd4850 and restart the imac. this time i am 100% sure i can login to windows 7. when in windows 7, just update the device driver from imac 27" DVD from boot camp, and restart. u have to update the sound and bluetooth driver too in order to have proper sound card and magic mouse operation.
maybe i am a bit off, but hope this helps. cheers.

  • Why do my files not add up to used disk capacity?

    OS 10.3.x, G4 powermac.
    Main disk
This is not a small difference ( block usage, 1024 vs 1000 bytes etc)
    I have a hard disk, capacity ~35GB
If i add up the folders, its roughly 18-19 GB
It shows 28.8 GB used, 7 GB free
    Huh?
I have launched tinkertool and looked for large hidden folders and files. There are none.
FYI, the original disk had tghe same problem ; i used CCC to clone it to this one and it reoccured, even after a completre, clean copy to a newly partitioned disk. For the record the disk does have two partitions, both HFS+/J.
    Thanks,
    Grant

Yes, it can be confusing. It happens because restricted folders are automatically reported as size zero, as I mentioned.
In my own system, I have a large user account which I'll abbreviate as "d", and two very small user accounts named "j" and "t". When I am logged into the small "t" account, the main /Users folder is reported as only 1.14 GB. The "d" home folder is reported as 101MB, although it is actually very large.  All its main subfolders have red badges and are reported as size zero:
However when  I am logged into the large "d"  account, the /Users folder is now reported as 131.95GB and the "d" home folder is 131.19GB. The "d" subfolders are now accessible, and their true sizes are shown:
wrongly report the contents to the root admin?
Actually there are several levels of user privileges, and your admin account is not "root". The true "root" user  is sometimes called the "superuser", and is not constrained by permission restrictions. Had you actually logged in as root, all the numbers would have added up correctly. The "root" account is disabled by default, though, and should never be used unless you know exactly what you are doing. A mistake while logged in as root could destroy your system.

  • My Disk capacity is 24 GB. My first TM backup is going to be 63 GB!!

    Hi everyone.
My hard disk capacity is 24 GB. My first TM backup is going to be 63 GB! Is this normal?

When I noticed this, I checked if other partitions/ext disks were all excluded and one was not so I then excluded it and TM started again - but with the same calculation. The capacity of the partition that I am backing up is just 33 GB. Mystery! JJ

  • Trying to load CS5 upgrade disk - does not recognize CS-2 install

I'm trying to load my copy of CS5, which is an upgrade disk from CS2.  I have all the original disks, serial and activation numbers for CS2.  But I find that the activation numbers are no longer valid.  CS5 disk will not even start up on my WIN 8 machine

Nothing earlier than CS6 is supported under Windows 8.
That said you can try downloading the installers for CS5 here: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-product-downloads.html

  • How can I get access to all the disk capacity?

I want to use all the disk capacity of SCSI target disks.
When I call prtvtoc for these disks, it written something
like this: cylinders number is N, available cylinders
number is N-2, so Solaris takes 2 cylinders from each disk.
Is there any way to use all the disk capacity, including
    these 2 cylinderes?
    Regards, Dany.

I do not understand the question.  I cannot go online from my site off any link embedded in the document.  When there is a link in the document and I try to click on it I get the error code posted in the first item.  Also (I just found this out trying to fix it) I am attached to windows mail and the same thing occurs when I try to send a file to myself.  Thus the bottom line is I am trying to get online through the embedded links and I get the error code written in the opening comment.  You have all the codes you requested, if you want anything just ask and I will seek it.  I am getting very frustrated, do not take this as anything against you...I cannot get this to work.

  • Create Notification for Cluster Share Volume Disk Capacity

I am new to System Center Operations Manager but am slowly learning. We are running SCOM 2012 R2 and I want to get notifications when there are issues in our 2012 Hyper-V Cluster, specifically when the free space on our CSVs gets below
100 GBs.  I have a notification channel setup and I am receiving notifications on other issues on monitored servers as they occur.  I have imported the Cluster, Core OS and Windows Server OS management packs which have enabled me to see in Monitoring
    > Microsoft Windows Server > Performance > Cluster Share Volume Disk Capacity the Free Space for the CSVs in a graph, now what do I need to do so I can get a notification when the free space on our CSVs gets below 100 GBs or whatever other
level I want to set it at?  Thanks.

    Hi WSUAL2,
Have you created a separate Subscription for Disk alerts? Please refer below link for "How to configure notifications".
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/kevinholman/archive/2012/04/28/opsmgr-2012-configure-notifications.aspx
In your case, you need to select the respective Cluster Disk monitor while creating new Subscription.
Check mark this --> "Created by specific Rule or Monitor"
Before that make sure that you are getting alert in console. By seeing Alert Details, you can find the correct Rule/Monitor name.
