Upgrading to a Macbook Pro and Turning my iMac into a Hardrive

My old PowerPC iMac G5 is running Final Cut Pro really slow. Rendering about 10 seconds of clip take like 40 to 60 seconds to render. I dont think that is normal because my dad's Powerbook Pro or what the old MacBook Pro, renders faster when my iMac is only a year old while his is 3 years old I think.
Anyways, would it be wise to move to a Macbook Pro 17" because I want a mobile workstation I can take with me to school and such not. I am planning on turning my iMac into a hard drive with my LaCie.
My last question. If I turn my iMac into a external hardrive can I hook up my LaCie into my iMac and then acess it from the MacBook Pro? or will I have to hook the LaCie directly into the MacBook Pro?

Er, wow.
Something is running, that's for sure. Limewire is a type of bittorrent, yes, and would be pulling network activity like that. Try quitting both, so only Activity Monitor is running.
To be honest, its outside the scope of a video editing board to help you trouble shoot your computer (sorry if that seems like a brush-off), but Activity monitor should tell you what you need to know. I'll answer a few more posts though.
Show the Activity Monitor Window, and in the top drop down option, select 'All Processes' and tell me what the top hit is, when sorted by % CPU column, for me, it's Activity Monitor itself, averaging about 5%-10% of my much slower computer than yours. Typical Idle %'s are 85%-99% when not doing anything other than looking at the Activity Monitor.
Talk to who else uses or set up the computer - perhaps they have some background tasks running.
Another alternative is to create a new user, log out of this one, use the new user log in just to edit video, don't do anything else with that user account. Be aware, you can't use the other users files from the new user though.

  • Can not shut down late 2011 MacBook Pro and turn it back on again without the hard drive disappearing?

Ok, I have searched for months for an answer to this question to no avail, probably because no one has experienced it before. I am hoping however that you guys can help me figure this one out cause it is driving me nuts! Also, I am not entirely sure what section of the support I should put this under so if I stick it in the wrong place, I apologize.
Right now my problem is very simple. When I turn off my laptop, and then try to turn it back on, my internal hard drive disappears... and I get the blinking folder with a question mark on it. I have figured out something interesting however. I have an install disk with Ubuntu Linux on it. If I boot into that first, then RESTART the laptop, not shut down and turn back on, it reads the internal hard drive just fine and I can boot as if there is nothing wrong.
Second part to the problem... If I allow the laptop in either OSX or Windows to go to sleep (aka shut off the hard drive but the computer remains on), when I attempt to wake it up, I am greeted with the usual log in screen of whichever OS I am in, but is frozen and after a few seconds goes black and restarts the computer to find that... Surprise! The hard drive is gone
I have tried every trick in the book that I can think of, but can not seem to come up with a solution to the problem... I know when the problem happened and if anyone thinks that that will help them figure this out I will type everything I did up till, including the crash that caused this, and my attempted fixes, but I have class right now so only if you guys want it I will type all that out.
What I am currently running is:
    2011 MacBook Pro 13in screen
    4Gb of Ram
    1TB internal Hard Drive
OSX 10.11.whatever the newest update is... just updated the other day again.
Windows 8.1 on BootCamp 5 (yea I know its not supposed to work but it does) again, fully updated
Ubuntu 13.10 (I think? Doesn't really matter, its just an install disk I use to boot the computer)
If there is anything else that you guys need me to provide, I can, just simply ask. I can provide as much info as is necessary.

Sorry it took me so long to write back, But unfortunately this didn't help my issue.
My uncle and I did a lot of tests on this computer and have narrowed down the location of the problem a little bit.
We tried to first reset the SMC and the NVRAM as suggested, but the only thing that did was make the fans run on full tilt for the first session after restarting it for some reason. After that we tried re installing OSX over the OSX that was already on the system (not removing any of the files). This also didn't do anything but make refit stop working. Then we moved onto the next task at hand by removing the hard drive entirely and booting it as an external drive from one of the USB ports... as long as you booted it with the options key held down, it worked perfectly fine. Then we put an alternative hard drive into the computer and installed OSX on that. This time there was no trouble booting anything up. Everything seemed to work flawlessly. So we made a backup of my original drive (OSX, Windows, and all) onto an external hard drive and tested booting to it via USB. That again worked perfectly fine and booted right up with no problems. So after that we formatted the original hard drive and reinstated OSX. We then proceeded to transfer all the old files from the backup onto this new installation and LOW AND BEHOLD..... we were back to square one with it refusing to recognize the hard drive again.
So this basically told us that there appears to be something either wrong with the hard drive, or something got really screwed up in the software along the lines and by me copying all my old files back over, I just ended up bringing the screwed up file back over with it! (despite not copying over any settings of any kind) So I am still extremely confused as to what is going wrong... did some boot sector possibly get screwed up may be?

  • Why does MS Word 14.2.3 run so slow on MacBook Pro and brand new iMac?

Ever since upgrading to Mountain Lion, MS Word runs very slowly on both my 2007 MacBook Pro with 4GB RAM and a brand new iMac with 16GB RAM.
I have trimmed fonts  in the systems and removed font conflicts and duplicates.
Keyboard entries are delayed by seconds and typing a document becomes a nightmare.
    Any suggestions?
I have repaired permissions and verified both disks.
Also run Cocktail to clean out junk files. Still no luck.

Word is up to version 14.3.1. Try updating and see if that helps. The newest version may be more ML friendly. I certainly have no complaints about the speed of MS Word.
p.s. Just checked for updates - there is now a 14.3.2 version.

  • I had an iTunes account on an old computer with over 300 songs and I now have a MacBook Pro and when i signed into iTunes all the songs I had before were gone. How can I get my old songs back?

I had an iTunes account on an old computer with over 300 songs then when I updated my computer to the MacBook Pro it deleted all my songs when I signed into iTunes. Is there a way I can get those songs back?

Did you put the songs on the new computer?
You should copy everything from your old computer or your backup copy of your old computer to your new one.

  • Best way to share data?  New workflow: MacBook Pro and an older iMac

I have an iMac 24" 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running 10.6.8 that has been the workhorse for my graphic design business since 2006. Connected to the iMac are two back up drives: The first is an iomega 2 TB that I use for a system wide back up (via Time Machine) - this backs up both the iMac and the second back up - an iomega 500 GB drive that is about full of completed client projects. Both drives are wired directly to the iMac with FireWire 800.
So here is my dilema: I just bought a 'like new' MacBookPro 17 (early 2011) and installed Mountain Lion. I bought this to broaden my horizons - having been sitting at my desk staring down the iMac for 6 years... The MBP is 2.2 GHz i7 with a 750 GB capacity drive.
I am preparing to use the MBP as my main computer (Photoshop design and drive my wide format Epson 9890 printer). My work flow has been to develop client projects on the iMac and when completed archive the projects on to the 500 GB back up. Sooner or later I am going to phase out the iMac completely and get a new secondary display and run it via Thunderbolt from the MBP...
How can I access both back up drives from both computers? And keep them all sync'd up? My question is should I dump the second 500GB drive? Daisy chain it off of the 2TB drive? Too many choices - not enough experience... the iMac can run 10.8 - just dont know if I should do that yet also... I guess all the iCloud stuff will work to keep both machines sync'd via the cloud - but what about my work flow? Should I connect both computers via Ethernet??? I am at a loss for direction. Any suggestions???

I had a similar question and after almost a year of research I decided to bite the bullet and buy a N.A.S.  Here comes the juicy part.  I purchased a Synology Disk Station that has a program called Cloud Station that is almost exactly like DropBox with the exception my files are safer (IMO) because it's at my house.
The positive things about Cloud Station (CS) is depending on the model you chose (mine is the DS112)
    1.  Up to 3TB's of storage (DS112)
    2.  No monthly fees
    3.  Sync data on 8 different computers (that's what mm DS supports)
    4.  Can Sync on LAN or WAN (no need to switch using EZCloud) (free)
    5.  Backup (use as Time Machine)
    6.  Lot and lots of other features
    7.  Mac friendly.
    8.  Super easy configuration (took me less than 1 hour to configure after reading and looking at YouTube videos)
    9.  Very good tech suport
    Negatives
    1.  Non so far
    2.  Can't sync 1GB files (I don't have files that large)
    My configuration cost:
    DS112 $179 (Amazon on sale)
2TB WD Green 7200 RPM HDD $119 (Amazon)

  • Okay just got a 2TB Time Capsule and setup on my new 15" MacBook Pro and on work iMac. Can't connect remotely off network.

Both computers which I have connected to my work internet show Time Capsule under SHARED but when I click on it, it hangs on Connecting and then says Connection Failed after a few minutes.  Clicking Connect As just restarts the process of Connecting... but with an error saying "There was a problem connecting to the server "Justin's Time Capsule". "The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time.  Check the server name or IP adress, check your network connection, and then try again"....  Any help would be great, I've browsed a bunch of the the threads and can't figure it out!
    Thanks in advance!

Reboot the TC.. this is common problem on Lion networking.
You may need to reboot the whole network.. don't know what your work network is so that might not be possible.. but a full reboot of the modem router TC and then clients in that order generally works..

  • I upgraded to a new macbook pro and gave my old macbook to my daughter, we have deauthorized all other computers it will not let us download itunes library with her id it say it already authorized to another apple id... help how do we fix this

i upgraded  to a macbook pro and gave my old macbook to my daughter, we tried to get her itunes library downloaded on it and it said that there was already an apple id assigned to that computer.
we went on the new one an de authorized all computers and then tried to re load her itune library on and it still isnt working. what are we doing wrong?
i called tech support and they are useless until you are willing to pay them 269 dollars to give you the information. ive spent a smal fortune buying apple products over the last 2 years, the least they could do is answer a simple question. Please help

It sounds to me like there are two separate processes being intertwined above:
    1.  Setting up your daughter's MacBook with identifying info; e.g., Apple ID for the user account on that machine.
    2.  Transferring the iTunes library (a very different operation).
Have you used Apple's Migration Assistant to move your daughter's information from her old machine to the MacBook?  That would have avoided this whole issue.
If not, either start the process over and use Migration Assistant, or try to more carefully and precisely define exactly what you did to accomplish this transition.  You said, for example, "there was already an Apple ID assigned to this computer."  That statement almost certainly did not originate with iTunes.

  • Issues with sleep/wake feature after 16GB RAM upgrade in my MacBook Pro. Any thoughts?

Just installed a 16GB RAM upgrade in my MacBook Pro and now it doesn't wake up on it's own when I open the lid. I have to press the power button. It works fine with a smaller RAM upgrade.
I've tried putting in just one of the 8GB modules and the sleep/wake feature works as normal so there isn't a problem with the RAM modules that I've bought (Crucial.com). I've also put in a combination of Apple's original RAM and the new ones to make 10GB (8GB + 2GB), and the sleep/wake feature works on that too. Put both 8GB modules back in and the MacBook doesn't wake up when I open the lid, I have to press the power button to wake it up. The MacBook itself works fine, super fast and the memory is recognised on 'About This Mac', the sleep/wake issue is the only problem I'm having with the 16GB RAM.
Any thoughts on this? Has anybody else had this sleep/wake issue like this when upgrading RAM?

I upgraded my early 2011 MBP to 16 gigs with Crucial. My machine would not sleep properly, because when I tried to wake it, it would wake from its hibernate image file. This is the issue I've seen here in this list.
I tried all the suggestions I saw on these groups. Nothing helped. I contacted Crucial, who suggested that if their RAM was defective, they'd replace it per their warranty process. I needed some proof it was their RAM causing the problem.
I put the original 8 gigs RAM back in the machine (2 4 gig sticks), and it behaved normally. I then put one stick of Crucial RAM in, all by itself. The machine behaved normally. I put the other stick of Crucial RAM back in, and took the first one out. The machine would not properly sleep and wake from sleep. This proved that one stick was causing the problem, and the other was not.
    Defective RAM!
I then requested and received an RMA from Crucial to send the defective RAM back. They paid shipping. I got new sticks of RAM about a week later. These new sticks of RAM work properly. No sleep issues.
I'm surprised and disappointed to say that this is not the first time I've received defective RAM from Crucial. I've purchased from them for years, and had GREAT service and received high quality products. The past couple years my experience has been different.
I'm still pretty steamed about this, as I spent a great deal of time trying to diagnose the problem and fix it. I don't really have that kind of time to waste. My expectation was that their RAM was high quality, and unlikely to be at fault.
Perhaps this is just a bad batch of RAM. I get that. I can forgive them once. But this has happened twice in the past three years. I'll look elsewhere for my next memory purchase.
Keep in mind that their customer ratings are generally very high. My experience is probably  isolated.

  • I own a MacBook Pro and an iMac. How can I copy my iPhoto library from my MacBook to the iMac?

I own a 13" MacBook Pro and a 27" iMac and I have different iPhoto libraries for each one of them.
How can I copy the iPhoto library from the MacBook to the iMac without losing the pictures I have on the iMac library?
Is it possible to merge the libraries?
Can I do this without using an external HDD? (e.g. connecting them through an ethernet cable?)
    Thanks for your help!

    1. By eirher a: renaming one of the Libraries or b: copying them to another folder
    2. If you have Aperture 3.3 or later and iPhoto 9.3 or later you can merge libraries with Aperture.
Otherwise the only way to merge Libraries is with the paid ($20) version of iPhoto Library Manager
    3. Yes.

  • Just bought a new imac, need to take logic off my macbook pro and install onto my imac

Just bought the new imac, and I need to get logic pro 9 off my macbook pro and onto my imac.  Both my install licenses are used, so will I have to buy a new license as well.  If any and all help would rock.  Thanks,  JASON

How did you receive Logic?  Reinstall from the distribution media.  You may be able to move the Logic application, but unless you know what and where the support files are it may prove difficult for it to work correctly.
I would assume you can obtain another license by calling AppleCare Customer  Service unless you are moving Logic to a new computer and removing it from the other  computer.  In this case you do not need to purchase another license.

  • How Can i connect using Thunderbolt a Macbook Pro with the New iMac

I bought the new Macbook Pro with Thunderbolt and instead of buying a new external monitor, i am thinking that the new iMac with Thunderbolt is a great idea.
Is there a cable to connect the Macbook Pro and use as iMac as external monitor, using Thunderbolt.
    thanks

I understood your question perfectly and the answer is absolutely yes. When you change the iMac into target display mode you underlying operating system continues to run all existing applications. For example in my case if I finished editing some video and am about to enter a lengthy render process or something which may draw lots of resources like hand real, I set it to start on the iMac and then switch it to target display mode to use it as a monitor with my MacBook air in the meantime.
Only one small caveat in your case though.  Since the target display mode is a feature of OSX (eg the OS interprets the special key stroke and changes the iMac into target display mode) you should make sure Lion server supports the target display mode feature. I don't see a reason why it wouldn't but that's the only thing currently crossing my mind. Keep in mind the compatibilities between ports as noted in my blog. If any of your machines have mini display port and you intend to connect the new iMac in target display mode you will run into issues. In that special scenario, I recommend buying a refurb iMac from 2010 which urtilize the displayport allowing you to use it as a display for all your macs -- those with thunderbolt as well as those with displayport. If you have thunderbolts then definitely go with the thunderbolt iMac.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
