Uplinking or cascading "SRW" switches
Hi Folks, I recently purchased three SRW switches, one 2024 and two 2048s. I want to uplink them together (for the obvious reasons) but am having problems with this. Is it imperative that I use the miniGBIC ports to uplink the switches or can I use any port on the switch? Must I make any particular changes to the the port configs to improve uplink performance? Is it possible to create LAGs between ports on these switches? Ugggggghhhhh....all these questions!! Thank you in advance for any assistance you may provide. JP
it is not necessary to use a gbic to cascade the switches unless you're planning to connect them via fiber. you can connect the switches via gigabit ports just as connecting 2 regular switches. if you have vlans created, and you want the same vlans created on all switches to communicate, you need to set up the uplink port as trunk. you can setup LAG to have a faster connection between switches.

Uplink ports and actual switches sfp usages (please help~~)

I am reading around to see the differences between uplink ports and normal ethernet ports. It seems to be uplink port just reverse the rx,tx pins and remove the needs of using a crossover cable.

I assumed that the SWITCH ethernet port pins are naturally arranged as opposite from the PC so that a straight cable can be used and the same applies to a router port.

NoobAn uplink port doesn't necessarily run at wire speed but it is more likely to.
But this doesn't mean you don't get oversubscription from the switch to other switches.
It's quite a big subject to cover but i'll try and keep it brief.
Internally within a switch there is a crossbar switch fabric which I think we covered before. Think of it of as pathways between ports. On any switch there are a number of ports that are capable of certain speeds.
Put simply if you take the number of ports on the switch and multiply that by the fastest speed the ports can operate at, if that number is greater than the switch fabric then the switch is said to be oversubscribed.
It doesn't mean in practice it will be oversubscribed but the potential is there.
What can happen though with oversubscribed switches is that the uplinks ports are guaranteed not to be oversubscribed ie. they do not need to contend with the other ports on the switch. It's complicated but it is to do with the connectors per port group etc. to the switch fabric.
But even though the uplinks ports can run at wire speed so they are not oversubscribed, if they are uplinks to other switches there may very well be more traffic combined from the other ports on the switch to that uplink port so you still get an oversubscription ratio.
But what would make it a whole lot worse was if your uplink port was oversubscribed within the switch as well.
So there is oversubscription within the switch and this is where we talk about ports running at wire speed or not and then there is oversubscription between different layers of the network eg. access to distribution for example.

LOOP_BACK message on fiber uplink connect to Extreme switch
I have a network where 2960X switches, one in each closet, are connected to an Extreme core switch. The fiber uplink of each 2960X is connected via an 802.1q trunk with VLAN 1 as the native VLAN. The Extreme switch is set to not tag VLAN 1. The Extreme switch is pruned to basically only send the untagged VLAN 1 and another tagged VLAN. Unfortunately, this network admin is using VLAN 1 as the mgmt network and has VLAN 1's SVI assigned an IP address in the 10.X.X.X/16 range.
we keep getting a LOOP_BACK message on the finer uplink of the 2960X switch which then goes into errdisable mode. Loopbacks are supposed to be disabled by default on fiber ports, but there is a bug in this code of 2960X IOS that send them anyways. I have disabled the ability for the 2960X to errdisable the uplink with the "no errdisable detect loopback" command. The network now stays running, but we keep getting the message. A new code is going to be released soon to fix this bug.
I am telling the admin that the message indicates a larger issue within the network, probably a loop. Has anyone run into this issue when connecting Cisco switches to Extreme switches? I have read some stuff on PVST+ not being a great solution on Extreme switches. It seems you can enable it, but VLAN 1 and the untagged VLAN are not supported. I am trying to figure out how I can possibly be receiving my loopback packet back on my uplink port.
I am going to suggest a great number of design changes to this network (not using VLAN1, MST, L3 links across the core) next week during a meeting, but I am hoping there is an Extreme wiz out there that could help me understand some caveats to connecting Extreme switches to Cisco switches. Cascade a switch to a dot1x port
Need help.. I'm trying to cascade a un-managed switch to a parent swith with a dot1x enabled port. IOS Ver of both switches (slave & parent ) are dot1x compliant.
Config Settings of my Parent switch:

Thanks...I am not sure if this is possible. If you are connecting two switches, then the ports need to be trunk ports. Right? I guess dot1.x will work on the access ports only. Anyone any comments?

Password Recovery SRW Switch problem - SRW224G4P

i have a problem with an SRW224G4P.
I have lost my admin password. And yes i have read the "Linksys SRW series Switch Password Recovery Procedure".
My problem is that the message "Autoboot in 2 seconds - press RETURN or Esc. to abort and enter prom." don't appear.
So what can i do?

Uplinking 2 x 2950SX switches via MTRJ ports
Hi,
While trying to connect 2 x 2950SX switches via their MTRJ ports, using a 2m MTRJ fibre cable, I received no activity on the ports.
I have tested the ports using the WAN uplink and they activate, therefore I know the ports themselves are fine.
I have tried two MTRJ cables, to rule out any cable failures, but the results were the same.
Is there a limitation on the minimum distance of a MTRJ cable for connecting these switches, e.g. should I be using a 3m cable?
Currently having to use a cross-over cable to link the switches.

I have checked the cable and it is an MT-RJ to MT-RJ Multimode fibre cable, 2m in length. The uplink cable to the WAN is a 5m MT-RJ to SC Multimode cable and works fine in any port on either switch.
I have checked the 2m cable and there are no breaks.
I checked the configuration of the two switches and ensured that switchport mode trunk was enabled both ends.
I don't understand why we don't get any link lights when the ports are connected.

Two srw switches with vlans and pfsense gatway
Hi,
I've got a bit of a problem that a can't seem to get a handle of things.
I've got two srw 48 port switches that I would like to link together and then on to the pfsense box.
First I'd like to connect the two switches to see if everything works and then on connect the pfsense box.
Now I would be very great full if someone with a bit more experience with VLANs would be so kind to walk me trough the procedure of creating VLANs, configuring them to ports on the switch and connecting the whole thing to another switch.
This is what I've done so fare.
1. I created 3 VLANs on both switches (VLAN2-office,VLAN3-WiFi, VLAN5-VoIP). I've created these VLANs with the same tags on all the devices.
2. I configured the ports that connect the switches as trunk. (I can't seem to be able to configure anything else on this port. Is there something else I should configure on these ports?)
Now as fare as I understand the documentation the VLANs on each switch should now see each other.
I'm still not sure on how to configure a physical port to one VLAN. After creating the VLANs on both switches and connecting them trough the trunk port I set ports 10-20 to VLAN2 by going to VLAN Management -> Ports to VLAN I selected VLAN2 and marked ports general and untagged and saved the settings. I repeated the procedure on the other switch. Now if I stuck my network cable into one of this ports I didn't get an IP anymore form the DHCP witch means that they were on a different VLAN than the other ports so I setup another router to act as a test DHCP with a different IP range as the main DHCPto see if it works. Now when I connectedthe test router to one of the ports in VLAN2 and my PC to the same VLAN2 port I got the test IP no problem. But when I connected the PC to the other switch VLAN2 port nothing happened until I connected the test DHCP to one of the VLAN2 ports. So clearly the switch VLANs are not communicating.
Now I don't know did I forget something, made a mistake with some setting or I just don't know what I'm doing because I think I need to get the VLANs between switches working before tackling the pfsense connection.
I would be really great full if someone explains to me how to set these VLANs up so that they would work between switches.

I was successful and I did exactly that. I put all VLANs on trunk ports and the switch to switch to pfSense started to work.
The only thing that gave me some problems was the end port(port connecting to the device pc, phone, printer) configuration. I was under the impression that the port was supposed to be in general mode and tagged. But I figured out that the port is supposed to be in access mode and untagged and only a member of one VLAN(the one I wanted it to connect to).
Anyway all is working now and I've figured out all the kinks.

Is there a way to edit the saved StartCfg.cfg file on a Linksys SRW switch?
I have a SRW248G4 switch that I want to edit the StartCfg.cfg file to use as a template for several new switches. The content of the startcfg.cfg file looks to be binary or mostly binary. Is there a way to get the switch to save and load the file in text format similar to the Cisco switches?
An alternate option is to create a templete config on one of the new switches with all the standard settings, save it, upload that template config to the other new switches and change the things that are different/unique from the web interface. This is possible but will take a lot longer.

Kerry Melcher, CCNPYou cannot edit the library file itself, but you could perhaps edit the XLM file and then import that, basically following the procedure you use when the library file has been damaged:

You'll need to be very careful about editing the XML, though, as it's really easy to completely mess up your library if you edit the wrong thing. Make absolutely sure you have backup copies of the original iTunes library file and XML file, so you can put them back just in case something does go wrong.

SRW switches: Setting Qos (Cos) on VLANs.. Help

I'm new on this board, but maybe someone knows the answer to my question.
This is my situation. I work at a school and our network has an srw2048 as a rootswitch. Only servers and other switches are connected to it. Two of those switches are srw2024's via fibre optic connection. We have 5 VLANS installed in the network.
Ok. Now the question. We want to install security camera's in VLAN 5 (only camera's and NAS are on that VLAN) that transport live feed from 2 camera's from the 2 srw2024's to the rootswitch srw2048 and up to the NAS box. To make sure the live data is guarantied i want to put QOS on VLAN 5 for all the 3 switches with highest priority. In de datasheet Linksys recalled that they could handle Qos on VLAN, but i can't figure out where to configure that in the switch.
Can someone help me out on this one?
Marco SchaefferAs what I know, you can’t set the QoS of the switches via VLAN selection but only through port selection. If you didn’t manipulate the WRR Weight and the CoS (Class of Service) to Queue settings, the CoS value 1- 2 are the lowest and the 6-7 are the highest priority.
To set this up, you will need to go to the web utility of the switch and go to the “QoS” tab. Under the “CoS Settings” sub- category, you can configure CoS of each port in the “Port to CoS” setting. With this you can designate the prioritization of each port and you can make CoS 6 or 7 in those ports that are members of VLAN 5. -
Cascade Catalyst 3560 switch for loaded traffic
I have a layer 3 Catalyst switch 3560 with 24 FE interfaces.
I need to pump traffic from traffic generator into port 1 and propagate it to other ports; the last port will be connected back to the traffic generator.
I suppose that I need to cascade some of the switchports but how do I configure the catalyst switch for this setup? Is it making use of routed port and static routing?Hi Ankur,

The traffic generator are layer 3 interfaces which I can assign IP address.
You mentioned that I do not need any routing, but I require traffic coming from the traffic generator(e.g FE1) going into switchport 1 to traverse through the rest of the switchports before exiting from the last switchport back to the traffic generator(e.g FE2). Therefore, I need advice on how to setup the catalyst switch to achieve this.If I assign ip address for this traffic to end at the traffic generator-FE2, the generated traffic will enter the switch at switchport 1 and directly exit from the last switchport without any traversing done. Btw, do I need to cascade my switch with cross cable in this aspect?

On some kit like netgear hubs etc, you may find a little button or
slider switch which may be labelled MDI or MDI(X) this allows a
straight cable to be used between 2 Hubs or switches (Both DCEs).
Some Cisco switches/routers will allow you to do the same but in software

Setting uplink port on Catalyst 2900 series Switch
Greetings, I'm working on my CCNA and I want to copy down the IOS to my Linux box via TFTP before making any major configuration changes (basically back it up).
I've noticed I don't have an uplink port on the Switch and not really sure how to go about this.
Also can I use CAT5 or will I have to use Cross-Over?

I'm not sure how to confirm if MDI/MDI-X is enabled or not on the Switch.
Forgot to include this other detail. All of the devices (Linux pc and Cisco Switch) are connected to a Linksys SOHO Router/Switch. Will this make a difference? I wouldn't think so as long both devices can ping each other.

I have 2 VLAN are Data and Voice.
- Data VLAN ID is 2 IP 192.168.2.X/255.255.255.0
- Voice VLAN ID is 200 IP 192.168.22.X/255.255.255.0
- I created two vlans, in switch, Data and Voice.
- On the port number 28, it is trunk by default, so I add Data vlan ID 2 tagged.
- On the port number 26, it is trunk by default, so I add Voice vlan ID 200 tagged.
- On the port number 27, I add Data vlan ID 2 tagged for Data vlan out.
- Port settings No.1
I set it up as Trunk with Data vlan 2 untagged, and 200 Tagged (voice vlan). I plugged in a phone with a pc attached. But the PC will get to the vlan 200 to get the DHCP address, but no from vlan 2. The Phone works with correct vlan ip.
- Port settings No.2
Trunk with vlan 1UP, 2T, and 200T. The phone is even worse. Would never pick up any IP from DHCP.
- Port settings No.3
Access with 200U...of course the phone will work... and the PC could not get to its own vlan. Instead, the PC got an ip from the voice vlan. Not from VLAN 2.
I have Linksys phone I’m not sure if this help.
For more information I setup in switch,
- enable voice vlan
- set the port on auto voice vlan
- enable LLDP-MED globally
- create a network policy to assign VLAN 200
- assign this network policy to the port the phone is connected to.
I hope this information help to help me to setup Data and Voice vlans, to plug the phone to work with vlan Voice 200 (IP rang 192.168.22.X), from phone to Pc and pc work as Data vlan 2 (IP rang 192.168.2.X).I just got done setting up voice VLANs on an SF 300-24P and verified working. This was working with Cisco 7900 series phones connected to a Cisco UC setup.

Note that I edited this by hand before posting, so doing a flat out tftp restore probably won't work. However, this should give you a clue. Also, don't take this as 100% accurate or correct. I've only been working with these things for about a week, though I've worked with the older Linksys SRW switches for a couple of years. I'm a CCNP/CCDP.
VLAN 199 is my management VLAN and is the native VLAN on 802.1q trunks.
VLAN 149 is the data/computer VLAN here.
VLAN 111 is the voice/phone VLAN here.
VLAN 107 does nothing.
