Upscaling 720 to 1080 and downscaling 1080 to 720

Hi all...
I'm editing a largely talking-heads documentary. We shot most of the interviews on a DSLR in 1080 24fps. I've been editing in a 720p ProResLT sequence, so that I can take advantage of the "extra" resolution by zooming in to 100% at times. (Also, the DSLR shots aren't the sharpest, so this way the softness is not as obvious.) I plan to master to 720p ProResLT.
The issue however, is that when creating a DCP for some theatrical screenings, this exported 720 master is going to be scaled back up to 1080.
So my question is, which is preferable with 1080 footage when I
a) want to zoom in by 130% for closeups pretty often and
b) when in some cases it will need to be delivered/projected at 1080:
1) Edit in a 720 sequence so that the zoomed-in shots will not be scaled larger than 100%, export a 720p master, but then for the DCP scale that master back up to 1080. So in the DCP, shots that were originally 1080 at full quality, would now be 1080 up-rezed from 720 which was downrezed from the original 1080 footage.
2) Edit in a 1080 sequence, the zoomed in closeup shots will be at 130% and thus not full quality, export the file for the DCP at 1080 from this sequence - and at least the non-zoomed-in shots would be at full quality, ie 100% and not larger. And then for the 720p Master (if there is a point in having one) I would either nest that 1080 sequence into a 720 timeline, or I would import the exported 1080 master file into a 720p timeline. But in the 720 export, the shots that I scaled up to 130% in the 1080 timeline will now have been scaled back down to 100%. I'm not sure if quality is lost going up and down like that, in either option 1 or 2.
Also, is there a difference in quality between screening a 720 film where the projector upscales the image vs upscaling the image before exporting and exporting a 1080 version?
Thanks!

My two cents (worth exactly 2 cents)
Continue editing as you have to take advantage of the reframing ability. I would probably change the final output to ProRes 422, but that is your call.
When complete and you need to deliver a 1080 version, have the uprez done by hardware such as a Teranex:

  • 1080 and 720 in same sequence

I will be shooting next project using two differnt cameras, one only shoots 1080 p footage and I usually use 720 24p with my Panasonic HVX 200.
Can i use these two differnet settings in the same sequence? The Panasonic does shoot at 1080, but I am trying to avoid having huge files. Canon 5D mark 11 doesn't shoot 720 24p.

    >But make SURE you shoot 1080p 24pA,....IS iTHIS IS THE SETTING FOR THE CANON?
No...I said: "So I wouldn't worry about shooting 1080p with the HVX.  But make SURE you shoot 1080p 24pA,"  This is a setting on the PANASONIC.
    >SO EVEN THOUGH SHOT AT 30FPS WILL INGEST TO 24P?     If you want FCP to remove pulldown, NO IDEA WHAT A PULL DOWN IS?   you must shoot with that setting.
    Read up:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/24p
    >And yes, you MUST convert the Canon 5D footage to ProRes. ANY TUTORIALS ON CONVERTING TO PRORES?

  • Convert and replace 1080 to 720

Ok, so I've heard of people sending out lo-res versions of their video for editing and then just getting back the FCP document and then replacing the lo-res with the high res assets for output and what not. That's not my ultimate intention, but I got a little to happy with the 1080p and I need to free up some disk space. I was wondering what the easiest way to get all my 1080p(prores) down to 720(prores) and replace it in my current FCP documents as if I were in the situation I presented in the beginning.
Basically I have a bunch of source footage in 1080p that I've already been working with and I want to make it as if I logged and transferred it in 720 in the first place.

I think the recompression for offline editing technique would actually work quite well,
because all your edits will stay intact when you switch media.
Check out page I-105 for an introduction to Media Manager. Page 114 covers the
    specifics.
So just select your whole project, select Media Manager, choose Recompress,
choose a new location, and pick your codec (720 ProRes?). The cool thing
is that after you're done editing, you have the option of going back to the 1080
footage for your final fabulous render.

  • Shooting with both 1080 and 720 settings on location?

    Hello,
I'm new to video world. 7D has been my camera for photography and now I'm interested in using it to do some video as well. I've been reading and searching a lot online lately and was wondering if below is the best way to approach an on-location shoot:
    1. Shoot with 'mainly 1920x1080 (24fps)' setting and 'switch to 1280x720 (60fps) setting' for the part which I know I will use the footage for 'slow motion'
    2. After finish shooting, bring all footages to CS5 premiere and use '1920x1080 (24fps)' sequence/timeline to process footages shot with both 1080 and 720 settings.
    3. Use the 'Interpret Footage' function to slow down the footage shot with 1280x720 setting and make it 24fps
Would this strategy work well or should I do the entire shoot with just '1280x720 (60fps)' setting and still use the '1920x1080 (24fps)' timeline in CS5?
Thank you for any help that you could provide as I'm eager to learn!

I think your question involves a couple of misconceptions:
assuming you're referring to Canon 7D, OnLocation does not support that camera to the best of my knowledge. For live monitoring and recording, OL works only with devices that output via Firewire (IEEE 1394), which I don't believe is true of the 7D.
while PPRO's Interpret Footage feature can serves the purpose of making a clip play in slow motion, that's not it's intent. Moreover, Premiere has better ways of achieving the goal, namely the Time Remapping feature and the Rate Stretch tool. Rather than attempting to explain those features here, I'll simply urge you to read the page in the help titled "Change speed and duration for one or more clips" (Home / Using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 / Effects and transitions / Duration and speed)
As to your most basic question of what resolution and framerate to shoot, I'm not the best person to answer that, and the OnLocation forum is probably not the best place to get an answer. I'd suggest either the Premiere Pro forum here on Adobe.com or a more general forum such as dvinfo.net, creativecow.net, or dvxuser.com.

  • Jv 1080 and a 2080

Hi everyone, i wonder if you could help me. I'm trying to get a jv 1080 and a 2080 synched up via a unitor to my g3(we have done it before). I want to set up various banks of sounds(you can set up 16 at a time) but for some reason when I try to patch or copy the sounds it wont give me the correct reverb etc etc, can you help if not c'est la vie

I think you've successfully stumped the panel. Apparently, those of use continuing to keep old Beige G3s in service are not doing the same level of work as you.
Have you posted the question in the Pro Logic 8 forums? I suspect you're more likely to find someone with a common experience there.

  • 1080 30p or 1080 60i?

    Hi everyone,
I am wondering which format is better in general (in quality):
    1080 30p or 1080 60i.
I have a Canon Vixia HF20 and can't decide which mode to stick to (have done both and am not sure which one is best)...
    thanks

I've been asking this also. To be more precise (hopefully without hijacking your question): These Canon cameras can shoot in 60i (the default) or 30p, and we wonder which is the better choice, assuming we will use the captured footage in iMovie 09.
Does the answer change if we are NOT using iMovie 09? I'd hate to send tapes to the archives that were shot at compromised quality just because of a quirky software issue that hopefully will disappear someday.
For straight camera to TV, I believe the default 60i is superior as it conveys more information when motion is present in the image. The TV deinterlaces as it is designed to for the best possible picture. Again, as I understand, the 30p option just writes two identical -instead of interlaced - fields to tape. (I'm not sure why this would lead to any better result in iMovie, which would toss every other interlaced field, giving the same net result.)

You can try to perform the soft reset again. If this would fail, below hardware key reset combination is what I can suggest. This deletes all the personal content of the phone.
    Option 2: Hardware key combination
Use this option if the phone fails to fully switch on when pressing the power on key.
Note: No warning about data loss!
Nokia Lumia with Windows Phone 8
    Step 1
Make sure the charger is disconnected.
    1. Switch the power Off.
    2. Press and hold the Volume down and connect the charger, if succeed an exclamation mark (!) is shown on the screen.
    Step 2
Then input the keys in the following order:
    1. Volume up
    2. Volume down
    3. Power
    4. Volume down
    Step 3
The phone will reset and boot up automatically. Please note that this may take several minutes.

  • What is the best resolution (1080, 720?) video and the best sound (PCM/AAC, bit, and kHz) that I can burn onto a DVD after creating in iMovie?

I have a Zoom HD Q3 video camera that also records good sound.  An Apple Genius once told me that a DVD can only reproduce a certain level of quality in video and sound just like a CD can only produce a certain level of sound quality.  For instance you can't burn true high definition video onto a DVD.  You would need a Blue Ray Disc. But I forgot the specific data that the Genius shared with me.  If my end goal is to make a DVD of my band performing, it doesn't make sense to record in a higher quality that I'm capable of reproducing on a DVD.  Can I shoot 1080 or 720 (30 ore 60 fps)?  My sound options are first PCM or AAC format, then PCM has a sample rate of 44.1, 48, or 96 kHz, and choice of 16 or 24 bit length.  The AAC format has only one sample rate of 48 kHz but a bit rate choice ranging from 160, 192, 224, 256 or 320 kbps.  Yikes.  I'm not a sound engineer but I know this camera probably offers me a higher quality in both video and sound than the DVD can reproduce.
Of course, I have this same question with my Sony video camera.  I can shoot AVCHD or MP4.  iPhoto can't even import AVCHD so that question was answered for me but do I shoot MP4 12M  1440x1080 or do I shoot MP4 6M  12180x720?  My end goal is always to burn a DVD.  I don't understand what any of the above values mean in both paragraphs and don't necessarily need to know other than which to choose if making a DVD is my final goal.  Thank you.
    Richard

This is the forum for iOS (iPads and iPhones).
But I can answer your question; DVD scan only be SD.
Which in PAL land is 720 x 576 pixels (which can be stretched 16:9 anamorphic).
    And is 720 x 480 in NTSC.
If you shoot in a higher quality then you will have a sharper image in the final DVD, but it will only be SD in the final encode.
iPhoto is a photo app, so no it can't import AVCHD; iMovie Mac can.
I will see if I can get this question moved to the correct forum so you get more answers.

  • Downscale 1080 sequence to 720?

I guess that's what I need to do? But how?
    I shot and edited a 1080 24p project.
Turns out the client has 720 elements (open/close, etc).
Do I make a new 720 sequence? If so, how, and then what? I'm still relatively new to P Pro, so this is 1080 to 720 For Dummies (step by step) please- thanks!
    Final output is 720 h.264

  • Problems with downscaling 1080 to 720

    Hi,
When edited my 1080p (Canon 1080f) material in FCP5 en exporting it to compressor for an 720p H.264 output, i get lots of jagged edges.
Compressing in 1080 is going very well. But downscaling is a problem.
What am i doing wrong? Must i do the downscaling somewhat earlier in the process?
    Tnx,
    Jiri

    Hi There
    Welcome to the forum.
You could try a little freeware app called JES
Deinterlacer. I use it for standards conversion, but
it appears to do up and down scaling as well.
    Cheers
    B
Thank you, i will try that.
I also read that Compressor still has a bug, when it comes to quality in H.264.
I also will try exporting a 720P H.264 file directly from FCP or Quicktime pro.

  • Why won't my music track play on 1080 and 720 versions?

I am using iMovie '11 and when I post the finalized project to MobileMe, only the tiny and small versions play back the added music underscoring - the larger versions play only the audio from the imported video.
The smaller versions on MyGallery play fine, complete with the added music track
Any ideas how to get the 720 and 1080 version on myGallery to play all the audio??
I have a brand new iMac and all software is current

Quicktime, Quicktime Pro and iTunes don't convert "muxed" ( muxed means multiplexed where the audio and video are stored on the same track) video files properly. It only plays the video and not the audio.
See:iPod plays video but not audio.
You need a 3rd party converter to convert the file with both audio and video.
See this for help: Guide to converting video for iPod (Mac/Windows).
Converting video for the iPod using Videora.
The file must meet the following specifications to play correctly.
H.264 video: up to 768 Kbps, 320 x 240, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats
    -or-
MPEG-4 video: up to 2.5 mbps, 480 x 480, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats.
"Bit rate between 1000kpbs to 1700kbps"
    You sure about that?

    I dare to say: NO.
I'm lacking the 100%-in-depth-engineer-lingo knowledge, but basicly, mpeg4s main advantage is a less demand of processing power for playback.
    but do you just playback?
    no. you edit.
and FCPX offers optimized and proxy media to unload your Mac.
secondly, what I've read so far, h264/'AVCHD' is a much 'better', effective codec. so, in tech terms, a 28mbps AVCHD should offer a better pic than a 28mbpsMP4 ..... (aside all other criteria which affect quality)
    I'm using a Pana707, an anchestor of your choice - a beast!
I'm in the middle of some editing of a show, my friends asked for a first glimpse, click here.
most shots you see are done with the Pana, the noised ones are done with a Canon DSLR 650D (wrong settings, the other guy using it had no idea …).
Before that, I used a Pana FZ38, which offered mpeg4/avchd too - made a few tests (quality control by eye, not by tool): no 'plus' for the intra-frame codec vs. inter-frame codec …
imho, the really (and only …) important factor for noticeable differences in 'quality' is cinematography, your skills in wisely applied manual settings …
PS: never mix mpeg4 and AVCHD on one media/SDcard! FCPX can not read such media …
