Urgent! PowerMac G5 Smells Like It's Burning; Red Warning Light!

I have a paper due today, and the only copies of it are on a PowerMac G5 (Early 2005, 2.0 GHz, OS X 10.4.11) and a USB flash drive that I can't use with any of our Windows laptops.

I was using the PowerMac G5 last night, and I noticed a sudden, sharp burning smell. It smelled like someone had left an iron sitting too long on a shirt. Upon further investigation, it seemed to be coming from the rear fan vents (which were roaring much louder than usual; I believe this is called "hyperdrive"), so I put the Mac in sleep mode and took the side panel and air deflector off to see what was causing it. The smell left pretty quickly, so I couldn't really tell where it came from inside the computer, but I did notice a bright red warning light beside the RAM (behind the front power button; inside the #4 area in this diagram):

While it seems that this should fix the light, (A) I couldn't really see the sensor described, even with a flashlight, (B) the Air Reflector Sensor Board sticker thing seems to still be in place on the plastic Air Reflector tab, and (C) I can't see how the sensor's not working would cause the computer to smell like it's burning!
I also skim-read a couple other things and got the impression (from the first link below) that this model has had pretty serious issues with the power supply unit in general. Considering it's practically ten years old, it may be unusual that the computer hasn't had this problem sooner!

Does this seem to be a power supply issue? Is there a way to solve both the red light/fan hyperdrive issue AND the burning smell problem?
If I don't get this fixed in time, I may be able to go to the library tomorrow and get the project off of the USB drive using an iMac... But it will be late.

My PowerMac G4 smells like burning plastic -- what the heck is going on!?

I have experienced the burning smell before, but almost a year ago. Yes, my machine is eight years old, but I still love her and have been doing whatever I can to keep her alive. The only major surgery I've done, is switched from the Samsung power supply it came with, to a lower powered Apple one. It had been running fine (and quieter since the power supply switch) until today. I powered the computer ON, left it for maybe 20 minutes, and when I came back, the first floor of my house wreaked of burning plastic/electronics. I shut the computer down and left it off for about four hours. Powered it up again recently, worked fine, BUT still emitted that burning stench (though can't tell if it was just blowing around the smell from before or heating up again...).
Does anyone know what the heck is going on with my beloved PowerMac G4 (mirrored drives)? I already purchased a used PowerMac G5 as a backup -- just in case I have to pull the HD from my G4 and move on -- BUT any help to fix my G$ would be most appreciated. Thanks. Nv

The first thing to do is to trace the smell if you can. The most likely source of heat is the power supply. If a capacitor leaked somewhere the computer might not work but my money is on melting wire insulation. The wire would still let power get to components but smell of hot insulation, thus it works but smells.
If you are careful, you can remove the power supply from the computer and open it up to take a look inside. If you have a spare CD-ROM drive, you can plug it into the power supply just by itself. Take a paper clip and short out between the green wire and a black wire on the motherboard molex connector (the rectangular one with the most wires going to it.
What you will have on your work bench is the cord from the wall outlet to the power supply, the power supply itself with the cover off, the paper clip jumper and the CD drive. If the paperclip is in place, the fan on the power supply will turn on. The tray for the CD drive should open and close. That will tell you if the power supply is working. If it also starts smelling, then you have isolated the problem.
If the smell comes from any place else, look for signs of melted plastic. One would hope that a fuse would blow before wires short out because the heat is a sign of high current draw.
Try that much and post back.

Check the settings in System Preferences > Universal Access > Seeing > Display.
It's possible to alter some of those settings accidently by hitting the wrong key combinations.

Failed while scanning for CD / DVD drives, error 2380.
Error while opening iTunes CD driver. This could be caused by a corrupted iTunes file or a conflict with other older CD burning applications, either currently installed or previously installed and uninstalled incorrectly.
With that one, I'd start with solution 3 from the following document:

New iPad2 has toxic smell like strong adhesive. What is it?

My new iPad2 has a toxic smell. My husband & I both got a severe headache from it. I have not even been able to set it up. It smells so very strong, not like a normal new electronic smell, but it like strong adhesive. I was so looking forward to using this, now I don't know what to do. The smell is unbearable and fills up the room. It is now in a bag in another room we don't use. I guess I will need to return it. I would like one that doesn't smell like this! What is this smell?

There are two probable causes for the smell.
1. The new gorilla-Glass screens are made from many layers of a glue-type material, giving them a lot more durability but also more possibilities to be defective during manufacture. Thus, if a layer does not dry properly, other problems ensue, but this would normally be accompanied by other physical defects.
2. Electrical components often smell like that when they overheat (eg. sitting in a 120˚ warehouse or something along those lines). Many times they do sit in poorly air-conditioned back rooms before making it to the shelf.

Can anyone tell me why/what causes my iPhone 4 smells like an odd mixture of bubble gum and nail polish remover. It's coming from the headphone jack and bottom port. The phone is not new but is less then a year old and I've never spilt anything on it.

Ok. I took my iPhone apart to replace a cracked screen and when I took out the battery, the adhesive holding the battery ripped the protective paper on the battery itself and once that happened, I smelled the smell that you described. So more than likely, it's your battery which got too hot. You should have it replaced.

This is what's causing the crash, and it sounds related to PrintFab.
From googling, it looks like removing /library/printers/ppd plugins/printfabpde.plugin will get rid of the crash, but I don't know if that will make the driver unusable.

as mentioned in subject Problem burning red led constantly flashes then I recieve a message " error reading data"
the dvd burner is a MSI ms 8404a. using Nero6 and princo DVD -R Win XP-PRO
I have had no problems in the past burning with this media and I'm halfway through a stack of 50...
I dont have any other media here atmo so any help would be great..
Also upgraded firmware with msilive although it said I had the current version..

Ok just burnt a cd using nero6 while burning the red led flashed costantly, when finished cd ran perfectly ....??? anyone want ABBA GOLD??
Im sure as that when I used to burn DVD's the red led was solid not flashing....H E L P ....!

I don't understand why the light would be solid and not flashing when burning.
If this is a common problem, it's a problem for me because i'm about to order two MSI DR16-B DVD-RW drives, tell me, is this the drive you have in your system? The one with the problem?
If so i could use some advance warning of the problems i might face.
The previous post is correct, make sure that your Operating System hasn't put the drive into PIO mode, it should be UDMA Mode 2 at least.

My Iphone6 charger startet acting up today, then it started smell like burned plastic. Now it's broken.

Earlier today the charger was acting up, charging the iphone then not charging it and so on. And suddenly I noticed a burned smell, and my charger got a hole in it. And now it is dead. What do I do? I've had the iphone for 3 months, the charger should be a bit better than that, considered the price. I am basically phoneless since I don't have any other chargers.

The charger carries the same warranty as the phone. Bring it to Apple for evaluation and possible replacement.

Hi, can anyone help me please? i've been using my OSX Tiger a lot today with graphics and sort like that and then it started to behave weird. For example when I move the cursor over an Icon or text and i press the button it gets larger (magnified x3 or x4 times on the desktop) so it looks like a low-res image, it looks like a desktop mistake, I smell a problem. Does anyone knows what's the story with this?? is it a virus? I restarted the computer but the problem persists. (just in case, it is not the disabilities people magnify's tool) Any help?? THanks.

I haven't experienced that with the Desktop. That happens sometimes when using Firefox, when I Option-click certain images on certain websites, or maybe it's Control-click that makes that happen. I am on my way to sleep, tired and can't remember exactly what it is that I do that makes certain images do that in Firefox.
But what you could try, is do a Repair Disk Permissions. If you don't know where that is located, go to your Applications folder > Utilities > Disk Utility and try Repair Disk Permissions.

I haven't ever done the other selection, Repair Disk. I think it's a more thorough action. I don't know exactly what it does, though. If you do that, make sure to read the help page information first. And then decide if that is what you want to do. It's located close to the Repair Disk Permissions button. Although, Repair Disk may not be clickable. Since the one that I'm looking at is not clickable.

Hey guys - I'm doing more and more stuff in Motion and Final Cut, and I'd like to be able to create and burn high definition stuff. It seems like it should be able to, but perhaps OS 10.5.8 isn't sophisticated enough? Last thing i want is to do all my research and decide on the best make/deal burner, and then not be able to follow through. Ugh!
