Urgent Problem with 10.4.9 update

I was running flawlessly with 10.4.8 and did the Software Update to 10.4.9 around 11.00 a.m. yesterday. All good and 'seemed' fine upon restart.
Then at 4.00 I was working and the screen went blank. Thought video or monitor had died (23 cinema). Had nothing crucial running or unsaved so I restarted (held power button in--possibly mistake) and rebooted. Grey screen came up with spinning icon. Kept spinning kept spinning. After a few minutes fan starts to get faster and louder.
Reboot again. Same thing.
Reboot again. same thing.
Reboot with option key and install 10.4.6 from DVD onto firewire drive.
Boot up on 10.4.6 drive.
Investigate. Zap PRAM and reset SMU (tried both pulling plug 2 mins and pressed green button under memory on logic board).
Still no boot from 10.4.9 drive.
Have backed up critical files onto firewire but am now at a loss as to how to get machine to boot off 10.4.9 drive.
Definitely seems a coincidence that this happened after 10.4.9 update. Would seriously suggest backup and redundancy procedures before update just in case.
Can anyone please help with suggestions??

There were some others with problems that were reported to MacIntouch: Reader Reports 10.4.9 so you are not "alone" with having problems.
While some 3rd party can be terrible (Norton) Disk Warrior and Applejack are safe and essential. Onyx is free but I prefer Tiger Cache Cleaner, but ONLY if there is a problem and a fix.
There are things that can be done from the command line in Single User Mode, which is too much for most, and Applejack puts a nice menu and auto run around those commands, but it has to be installed in the first place.
The trouble with using older versions of Disk Utility - it can be "out of date" even if it is Tiger (10.4.6 is fine).
In all honesty, if you have a spare backup drive, I would do a full clean install and update that (Apple only) to 10.4.9 or 10.4.8, you're call.
Where 3rd party utilities get in the way is when they are installed, run in the background, even if all they are suppose to do is monitor the health of your system (temps, smart status, backup script, etc). Avoid those like the plague.
Run updates in Safe Boot Mode. And use SAFE BOOT with shift key if you are ever faced with having to restart.
If you want to run an update, repair the drive ahead of time. Even verify the drive will at least force any unsaved changes to disk (which is why it takes a minute or two to begin).
A small 20GB partition for your emergency boot drive - essential - can be anywhere but ideally on another drive - that is off line otherwise.
You can also backup your system to disk images. Another essential, and perhaps you use it, would be SuperDuper. Reviews and tests seem to confirm that it is safer and does a better job of preserving metadata and create a good clone that will be bootable afterwards. Tri-Backup 4.04 is another.

  • Looking for a site that shows problems with windows patches or updates.

Looking for a site that shows problems with windows patches or updates...so I know what not to install.
Plenty of sites list and summarize individual patches, I want one that consolidates problems and complaints so I can better assess the risk. Currently I'm waiting to install patches several days and doing google searches. That works, but I'd rather find a place
    that does it with expertise.
Which forums would be best to look for such problems.
Thanks in and advance for suggestions

    Hi,
I agreed with Cyber and Rick.
Windows update helps to keep your PC safer—and your software current—by fetching the latest security and feature updates from Microsoft via the Internet.
Although there might be some problems when installing it, Windows update is not the one to blame.

  • URGENT Problem with Greek Character from an Oracle database

Hello, I am having a serious and urgent problem with the character settings of an oracle database (8.1.7). The database is sitting in a solaris unix server and when we run the env command we have the following in the NLS_LANG parameter: AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P1 (I do not know if this is helpful). When I retrieve data from oracle database (through a VB.NET 2005 program)to a dataset I use a special font in order to see the greek characters (HELLASARIAL). But when I am trying to save these data to a TXT file the greek characters are like Chinese to us. I tried several encodings (System.Text.Encoding.GetEncoding(869)) but without success. Can someone tell me how to convert the oracle greek characters during the selection or during the saving to the TXT file?
Please respond as fast as you can.
    Thanks in advance

Here is the answer of the microsoft:
I have the information that you have a VB.Net 2005 application connected to an Oracle database 8.1.7.4 hosted on a UNIX server.
This database has the CharacterSet WE8ISO8859P1.
When retrieving Greek characters from this database in the application, you cannot see them.
Could you please send me a screenshot of these characters in the .Net application?
Are they displayed as gibberish, or as inverted questions marks (?)?
I already had similar cases with Hebrew characters hosted on an Oracle database.
These characters were displayed as questions marks on the client side.
This is due to the fact that System.Data.OracleClient is using the Server CharacterSet to display the characters.
If your Greek characters are not stored in the WE8ISO8859P1 characterset, then they won’t display correctly on the client-side.
This is different from OLEDB where you could interact on client side by modifying the NLS_LANG parameter in the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE\HOME0.
The client NLS_LANG and the server CharacterSet had to match in order to correctly display the data, and avoid SQL*NET conversion.
So there are two solutions to your case:
    - The first one is to create a new database using the P8 characterset. The Oracle .Net managed provider will so be able to use it and display the characters correctly.
    - The second one is to use the OLEDB.Net managed provider, and then use OLEDB for Oracle provider. OLEDB will take care of the client NLS_LANG registry parameter.
Would it be possible to test your application against an Oracle database with WE8ISO8859P8 characterset?
Would it be possible to test it with the OLEDB .Net managed provider, and after checking the NLS_LANG client registry parameter?

First, confirm that ActiveX Filtering is configured to allow Flash content:
    https://forums.adobe.com/thread/867968
Internet Explorer 11 introduces a number of changes both to how the browser identifies itself to remote web servers, and to how it processes JavaScript intended to target behaviors specific to Internet Explorer. Unfortunately, this means that content on some sites will be broken until the content provider changes their site to conform to the new development approach required by modern versions of IE.
You can try to work around these issues by using Compatibility View:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/use-compatibility-view#ie=ie-11
If that is too inconvenient, using Google Chrome may be a preferable alternative.

Mac OS X- Gray screen appears during startup
In most cases the problems may be caused by one or more of these:
    a. Problem with the computer's PRAM - See Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
    b. Boot drive's directory has been corrupted - Repair with Disk Utility.
    c. Critical system files are damaged or deleted - Reinstall OS X.
    d. The disk drive is physically non-functional - Replace the hard drive.

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD. Simply boot from the Recovery HD to perform the above.
Reinstall Snow Leopard Without Erasing The drive
(SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing The Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
