Urgently! remove oracle database domain name
I have changed my database's global_name.
here is the script:
alter database rename global_name to testdb.com
then I want to change the database name back to testdb, how to do that?
You need to recreate control file to make the change effective.
http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14231/create.htm#sthref338
For example, to create a database with a global database name of test.us.acme.com, edit the parameters of the new parameter file as follows:
DB_NAME = test
DB_DOMAIN = us.acme.com
You can rename the GLOBAL_NAME of your database using the ALTER DATABASE RENAME GLOBAL_NAME statement. However, you must also shut down and restart the database after first changing the DB_NAME and DB_DOMAIN initialization parameters and re-creating the control file.

What I have understood is that you recreated the EM repository. So where does "some of the future not working like date,etc." come into it? Are you checking date from EM ? Which application is not working, your application or EM or both or somethingn else? Tell us the complete version, error information and also post the output of

What is maximum length of oracle database objects name
Hi all,
Can anyone tell me what is maximum length of oracle database objects name .
I guess it is 30 ,correct me if i am wrong thank you.
regards,
P PrakashSome objects (like synonyms or java classes) can have longer names than 30 chars:
SQL> create or replace synonym empempempempempempempempempempempempemp for emp
Synonym created.though internally oracle will generate short names for such objects:
SQL> select synonym_name from user_synonyms where synonym_name like '%EMPEMPEM%'
SYNONYM_NAME
/969ea190_EMPEMPEMPEMPEMPEMPEM
1 row selected.and not always will the long name be actually usable:
SQL> select * from empempempempempempempempempempempempemp
Error at line 1

Oracle database object name 30 characters limit
Hi,
I'm working with Oracle since version 8 and I know about this restriction. I was hopping that this will be eliminated in the future, but I saw that in Oracle 11i the same restriction exists.
Does anyone know if it will be eliminated in a future release?
I would like to know if there is a reason why this limitation exists. We are currently developing an JPA application and we have tables that have name with more than 30 characters.
Thanks!because all table/index names must be stored in the data dictionary and that storage is only allocated for 30 characters

I have a lab that consists of 2 - 4503 with SUPII running cat4000-i9s-mz.122-25.EWA14.bin as the core devices. I have been practicing for the BCMSN test and was working with the different VTP confiuration options. Here are the two issues that I am having. One of which from reading other posts, I may have answered, but want to verify.
1- 4503 (Core_1) was configured as Server, but no VTP summary advertisements where being propegated to the other clients. I verified the configuration multiple times to ensure accuracy. All VTP Domain names where empty (factory default). Not until I changed the VTP Domain name to Test, did I get propegation of vtp advertisements. I have in the past been able to set up vtp on 3550, 3560 switches with no VTP Domain name and VTP worked as expected. From reading, it appears the non propegation of vtp summary advertisements is the norm for 4503. Can someone verity this.
2- How do you remove the VTP Domain name from the 4503? I was able to remove the name from the other devices, 3550, 3560 by doing the following:
del flash:vlan.dat
wr er
reload
On the 4503 I did the following:
Switch#del /r /f cat4000_flash:vlan.dat
reload
After reload, everything was back. I also assumed when the 4503 was booting, it may have recieved the VTP information from the other 4503. So I isolated both by disconnecting the uplinks to all other devices. Still no go. I have copied the start-up config to a tftp server, modified the config by removing all vtp information then copied back to running-config and this worked. But it seems like there should be a better (easier) way of getting the vtp domain name removed on a 4503

Hi,
Deleting the vlan.dat from cisco switches will delete the complete vlan and vtp information from database and if you are not able to delete the domain name in these type of situation try configuring the some bogus name with mode as transperent mode so that other should not get impacted.
check out the below link for more information

Can Oracle Database 10g and Oracle Database 10g Express Edition co-exist ?
I just installed Oracle Database 10g Express Edition. But I also want to access isql*plus for study purposes.
Can I download/install Oracle Database 10g without removing Oracle Database 10g Express Edition ?I decided to download and install Oracle 10g myself and it was pretty quick to install. So I answered my own question : Oracle 10g Express is definitely able to co-exist with Oracle 10g no problem.
I want to post/share this answer for others who started with Oracle 10g express first - the journey I started.
The url isql*plus is displayed near the end of the installation together with the enterprise manager url. Pretty cool.
Now I can learn both Oracle 10g enterprise edition and Oracle 10g Express which is based on apex engine. -
Uix get Oracle DB attribute name
I have a uix sort event calling a java method. In the java method, I can get the view object attribute name for the column to be sorted from the page event.
I need to obtain the Oracle database attribute name associated with the view object attribute name so I can construct an ORDER BY clause for the sort.
Does anyone know how to do this?
Right now I am trying to get my java program to retrieve the Oracle DB name.
If this is not easy to do in java, is there a way in the uix code I could set a page property for the column selected to be sorted, with the Oracle DB attribute name in it? The idea would be to set the page property with the proper value when someone clicked on the column header to cause the sort to happen.
I really appreciate any help you can give.
Best regards,
SteveThis topic is closed. I solved the problem another way.

Problems with domain name in global_name and database links
I have to create a database link on Oracle 9i **without** a domain. Somehow whenever I create a database link, a domain is added. This domain seems to be the domain that is also added to the database global name (and is the same as my TCP/IP domain on my windows machine).
I tried to create the db link:
create database link "TEST"
connect to remotedb
identified by mypassword
using 'myservicename';
and get:
TEST.DOMAIN.COM instead of TEST.
I also tried to change my database global name:
alter database rename global_name to NEWNAME
and still the database name is NEWNAME.DOMAIN.COM
So there does not seem to be any way to remove the domain.
Note that:
- db_domain is not set in init.ora
- names.default_domain is not set in sqlnet.ora
- global_names = false
So... how to get rid of the domain part?Hi,
this is not what you want to hear, but once a global_name has a domain associated with it you can't get rid of it, you can change it to a different domain with the alter database command but not to null and it is this domain that will always get appended as default to your db link name so your stuck with it -
Hi,
I am preparing to install Oracle 8i on my Windows NT machine,
and I stumped into something that I can find no answer for.
Oracle asks me to say what my domain name is (e.g. suse.com). It
uses this to manage the different Oracle instances, e.g.,
server1.suse.com and server2.suse.com. Well, the problem is that
our machines do not have our domain name. That is, the machine I
am using (as well as all our servers) does not have a DNS name
xxx.intelsystech.com. Their names are managed by our ISP, and
for all I know they change it once in a while. Our machines do
have unique IP numbers, though (e.g. 43.25.44.32). We have
managed to do just about everything else using these fixed IP
numbers (e.g. ftp, http, etc.). Also, names are not a problem
because all machines are in the Windows Active Directory domain,
and therefore have a "local" name (e.g. Monet) in the Windows
LAN.
What should I enter when Oracle asks for my domain name? And for
the machine name? Can I use the IP number? Or the IP pattern
(e.g. 43.25.44.)? How will I be able to refer to an Oracle
service (listener, database name) without a domain name?
Thanks,
TahaOracle asks me to say what my domain name is (e.g. suse.com). It
uses this to manage the different Oracle instances, e.g.,
server1.suse.com and server2.suse.com. These domain names are not the same as ip domain names. You need
the domain names only if you want to have different oracle db's
connected to each other, e.g. for replication.
If you are using this db alone, then just choose any name.
How will I be able to refer to an Oracle
service (listener, database name) without a domain name? You can use ip-addresses for listener and tnsnames, but it is
better to use dns-names.
Hop this helps.

Urgent: oracle.jbo.domain.Number Bug (continued)
Dear Shailesh(JDeveloper Team):
To catch your attention, I posted the topic here again:
[original topic]
We are developing a BC4J application for our US customer. Our web server (iAS) and database (Oracle 8i) are installed on RS/6000, AIX 4.3.3
When we try to set a Number type field value (Number is the only type in Oracle database to stand for a number, either a float field or sequence number). On AIX iAS, if the value is integer, larger than 100 and is not multiple of 100 ( such as 123, 112, 5676, 43435 ), the system(ont our jsp, web bean, but handled by low level classes) will automatically add two zeroes at the end of the number before insert to database table. For example:
123---->12300
112---->11200
5676--->567600
43435-->4343500.
It is incorrect! On the other hand, when we try to retrieve value from a field which type is Number, if the value is a integer but larger than 100, and is not multiple of 100 ( such as 123, 112, 5676, 43435 ), the system will automatically add two zeroes at the end of the number after got from database table. For example:
123---->12300
112---->11200
5676--->567600
43435-->4343500
We check the xml file of the BC4J, Number field type in the middle-tier is denoted as oracl.jbo.domain.Number, so we wrote a program (JSP) without accessing database, like this one:
<%
for (int i=0 ; i<1000; i++) {
%>
<p> <%=new oracle.jbo.domain.Number(i).toString() %></p>
<%}%
The program runs correctly in JDeveloper developing environment on NT workstation( in the developing environment, NT mimic a local virtual middle-tier):
0
1
99
100
101
598
599
600
999
But after we deployed the jsp to iAS on RS/6000 and browse it, the output result is very inconceivable:
0
1
99
100
10100 (Should be 101)
59800 (Should be 598)
59900 (Should be 599)
600
99900 (Should be 999)
We checked all through the deployed Jar files on iAS and the oracl.jbo.domain.Number class, we found that the class is extended from oracle.sql.NUMBER, and the toString method is also inherited from oracle.sql.NUMBER.
We even test below simple jsp program using oracl.jbo.domain.Number type:
<%@ page contentType="text/html" autoFlush="true" import="java.lang.*,LocaMotion.*"%>
<HTML>
<HEAD>
<META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type" CONTENT="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1">
<META NAME="GENERATOR" CONTENT="Oracle JDeveloper">
<TITLE>
Hello World
</TITLE>
</HEAD>
<BODY>
<%
String strI="123";
%>
<p> <%=new oracle.jbo.domain.Number(strI)%></p>
</BODY>
</HTML>
In JDeveloper developing environment, it prints 123 in browser, but when deployed to iAS, it prints 12300.
Why the same Java class has different behavior under different OS (NT and RS/6000)? We think it is a bug on implementation of oracle.sql.NUMBER. We assume this is caused by the machine CPU register length: NT: 32 bits, RS/6000: 64 bits.
This bug must be fixed to ensure the BC4J application workable. Would you please resolve this problem for us at your time?
We are eager to waiting for your answer, as we are in FVT phase, our customer is BITCO enterprises inc. in Virginia.
Thanks,
[Answer from Shailesh(JDeveloper Team)]:
I'd suspect this is an issue in oracle.sql.NUMBER implementation. Could you help us by verifying that oracle.sql.NUMBER.toString() also reproduces the same problem. A potential fix I could think of is to use the jdbc libraries that come with RS/6000-AIX version of the database.
[Our test result]:
We test the oracle.sql.NUMBER.toString() method, it also reproduces the same problem.
What's the "jdbc libraries that come with RS/6000-AIX version of the database"?
,who offer it? IBM or Oracle. Where could I find it and how to use it? Will oracle.sql.NUMBER problem for AIX fixed?
nullAs a follow up , could you tell the specific database version of Oracle8i you are using.(i.e 8.1.6 or 8.1.7/ also if you have applied any patches)
. Just wondering if you had tried a simple JDBC program (without BC4J) (eg: a command line program) which uses oracle.sql.Number and produced the same erroneous results.
appericiate if you could provide any additional information.
thanks and best regards

Hi
we are trying to follow up internally on this. Did you file a bug with Oracle Support on this. ?
If not I would suggest to do that, but at the same time we would be following up on that with the respecitive product group which works on that.
thanks and best regards

Larry's answer:
Yes. We opened a Tar on http://metalink.oracle.com (Tar number is 1350841.999), but still no solution provided.
Our software platform is AIX 4.3.3., Oracle 8i is 8.1.6, iAS is 1.0.
Below program is a very simple Jsp that uses oracle.sql.NUMBER but no BC4J classed used.
<%@ page contentType="text/html" autoFlush="true" import="java.lang.*,oracle.sql.*"%>
<HTML>
<HEAD>
<META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type" CONTENT="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1">
<META NAME="GENERATOR" CONTENT="Oracle JDeveloper">
<TITLE>
Hello World
</TITLE>
</HEAD>
<BODY>
<%
String strI="123";
%>
<p> <%=new oracle.sql.NUMBER(strI).stringValue()%></p>
</BODY>
</HTML>
In JDeveloper developing environment (WINDOWS NT), it prints 123 in browser, but when deployed to iAS on AIX, it prints 12300.
nullthanks for the extra information. We have passed the information to specific product group and they are looking into it.
As it looks like specific issue we can take this offline.
can you send your email id [email protected]
and we can let you know on the status.
