Use OS X Server Mail service as archive

Hello -
We don't use the OSX Mail service of our server in our business. Instead we rely on our ISP - and generally that works fine (especially as our server is not hosted in a secure environment).
But as a result, we regularly have to clean out our mailboxes as we hit the 2GB limit.
Would it be a good idea / sensible to use the Mail service as an archive tool? We could then make an IMAP folder per project and archive all mail for that project together in one place.
Or is there a better / more efficient way?

Mail is good for mail, but it tends to get overused. Using mail as a coordination tool is a hassle, and the usually question is how badly you will get burned by its use. Stuff gets lost in mail files and hard to find, and new folks don't have the benefit of the history, folks aren't sure what the newest versions are, folks get added onto or left off of distribution lists, and there's no change synchronization and little or no change tracking. Leave mail for messages, and particularly for assets and information that are ephemeral; for tasks it is suited for.
As for remote access, there are remote protocols for allowing that access, with the most secure being a VPN into the external firewall. With that and with the VPN tunnel connected, the remote clients appear to be local on the LAN.
There are other approaches toward this goal, including WebDAV sharing. That allows file access via port 80 into the web server. When WebDAV is enabled, Finder can connect remotely. (Presuming authentication is enabled and port 80 http or port 443 https is open through the external firewall.)
One of the more flexible approaches for these sorts of tasks a tailored purpose-dedicated front-end.
For contact management, that front-end can be something like the SugarCRM package. There are other options for contact management.
For files and such, distributed source code control systems can be useful; tools such as git or mercurial (Hg) allow distributed caching of files for offline access, and updates and conflict resolution, as well as tasks such as change tracking.
For brute-force file caches, tools such as rsync can be appropriate, but (if you go this route) you'll want to look at tracking as well as collision detection when more than one person is working on the same file.
There are front-ends for project status and bug tracking and related task management including Trac and Bugzilla, and many other choices.
For some tasks, web content management systems such as Drupal or Wordpress can be appropriate.

  • Date parameter does not work in SharePoint 2010 report using SQL 2008 Server Reporting Service

    Here is the settings:
    SharePoint 2010 with SQL server 2008 reporting services configured
    When create a report for a SP list using SQL server report builder (3.0) the date parameter does not work.
    The data parameter is set as "date and time" type and field name equals the col name in the SP list
    When run the report, the whatever dates I select, the result is always the same, so the parameters do not take any effect.
    Is any step missing?

    Have you tested if other type parameter worked?
    Have you tried typing the date format as 20140722 in your date parameter filed before run the report?

    Which operating system are you running on?
    If it is a Windows system you need to have an email client running like Outlook (32bit version) or Windows Live Mail. Either of those should be able to link to your current e-mail service. The alternative is to use the Adobe e-mail client but there are problems when trying to link it to your email service.

    I googled for this question (see topic) and I found some threads (also on the Apple Support Communities) of people asking the same question, rather they mention Lion server and not Mountain Lion server. When I look at some reactions to those questions I see replies saying that you should only use the Mail server in small scenarios (30 - 50 people) and some say it would be wiser to stick with Microsoft Exchange.
    I am wondering if you guys think about this the same way. I work for a school with roughly 1500 users and 400 employees. So that's approximately 2k useraccounts / mailaccounts. I'm sure I want to get rid of MS Exchange for various reasons, should I give the Mail server a try or should I search for alternatives?

    you really can't compare Apple(s) with ... well Microsoft(s).
    It is not up to the number of users, as Mark23 already said, because postfix will be capable of handling more mails than your users will produce any day. Rather it is up to what you expect to get. Exchange can deliver you more services, workflow integration and user experience than postfix/dovecot/calendar/address book (of cause you have to pay a price!). But what do you need?
    Just mail? Shared calendars or address books?
    Maybe you are looking that way just to get mail. Do you need kerberized services? Are your users mainly using Mail app? Do you want the simple configuation interface that comes with OS X server instead of standard files? Then go with OS X Server. Otherwise you might consider a linux box with postfix and dovecot.
    But it's all up to your requirements.

    At 10.5.2, we find that most of the problems with email accounts and VH sites are ... still broken.
    After they are addressed (cull these forums for an indication of the problems the current code does not address), I'd like to suggest some other areas of improvement.
    On a per-server, per-domain (or per-account) basis, can we set what happens to rejected mail. If a RBL or refuse item comes to the server, can we elect to choose between:
    reject and return to sender
    reject and discard
    If the mail server supports such settings.
    That would be lovely.

    Albeit, not through the GUI, you can adjust the behaviour of the content-filter to your liking.
    Have a look at /etc/amavisd.conf. Many settings are explained in the file.

    First you create a report using the data source in Crystal Reports DesignerStand Alone Application and then save it to repository.
    This is the easiest way to do it.
    You can refer to Crystal Reports User guide and also BOXI Admin guide for the version you are using.

    Yes i have created it to the location which you mention and it works fine.
    After if i go to SAP at the transaction DBACOCKPIT and try to run a FULL or LOG backup there, i have the following error:

    I've gotten no where.  In my last attempt all sasl errors and no mech connections had stopped but mail did not appear to go anywhere.  No trace.  I stumbled across a post that said ssl connections from Mac OS X Yosemite are broken and just don't work.
    Now the real rub. I have gotten the same thing working with Linux in 5 minutes following this post:

    Then within an hour my crontab and scripts were written, debugged, and blissfully sending email.
    I would rather run this from my Mac server.  I understand that this may become an in-depth discussion/debug session (remember the old sendmail.cf day?!) and would greatly appreciate someone's mentoring here.

    maybe it helps or not, I solve a other performance problem which is more related to the mailbox speed but this error on client side is gone afterwards:
    In Yosemite there is still also a problem with the automatic settings detection in Mail.
    That means that the application try's to find a working authentication mechanism in combination with different ports and encryption.
    So far so good, this feature would be okay but the application never stops to do that. So we are shortly connected but the connection becomes invalid again.
    This leads to performance issues and the application becomes very slow!
    If you refer your client log file maybe you can see some "Failed to start the SASL connection" issues (coming from Mail.app).
    In case that you are running a OS X Server which is used by Mail you will see in /var/log/mail* /Library/Logs/mail* various login failures. In case that you have enabled the Adaptive Firewall it can be happen that your IP is blocked for 15 minutes.
    Of course this must not be a issue for everyone I believe it strongly depends on your email server / provider which auth. stuff is supported or enabled.
    To solve it:
    1.) Open the Mail Preferences
    2.) Goto "Accounts" and select your Provider/Account
    3.) Klick Enhanced (the last right tab)
    4.) Disable the automatic settings detection (first checkbox)
    5.) In case you didn't enable "MailDrop"
    This works in Mail 8.1 on Yosemite 10.10.1

  • PSE 7.0 Crashes w/Adobe E-Mail Service

    PSE 7.0 crashes with the following response when I try to send an image using Photomail or as an attachment.
    It appears to work fine (or at least gets to the point where I can edit the message) when using Outlook or Outlook Express.  However, we use Thunderbird, so would prefer to use the Adobe E-Mail service.  We upgraded from PSE 4, which worked on the Adobe E-Mail Service with no issues.
    "Adobe Photoshop Elements 7.0 (Organizer) has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
    It gets to the point where the email shows up on the right-hand sidebar, then the mouse goes to an hourglass for a few seconds and then the above error message.
    I'm running XP Pro SP3.
    Any ideas?

    A couple of other thoughts:
    1. Perhaps PSE 7 doesn't like the PSE 4 address book.  That happens occasionally, though I recall it caused other symptoms, not a crash.  You could find all copies of the file "contacts.xml" and delete them, and see if that helps.  Different versions of PSE can hide these in dfferent folders, so configure Windows Explorer to show hidden files and then search your entire C drive.
    2. You could try the sledgehammer approach of uninstalling PSE 7, manually removing all traces left behind by the uninstaller, and then re-installing in what Adobe calls "simplified mode", with anti-virus and all other background services disabled:

  • Cannot edit text sufficiently within the Photo E-mail service (Elements 11)

    Greetings to all, a little help required please....
    Just purchased Elements 11 - excellent product at the price and am having a great deal of fun using it.
    One frustrating flaw within the Photo E-mail service....
    I've been using the Adobe e-mail service and it sends e-mail just fine having set up the account as required. 
    Each new e-mail appears with the text "Here are the files I want to share with you."
    Now I'd like to replace that with some different text.  I can delete it and replace it on the first editing page, and it stays there after I click 'Next' to the following 'Customise Layout' section.
    Clicking on 'Next' after this page, we have the final e-mail page, and the text has reverted back to 'Here are the files I want to share with you' again......
    I can delete it again, but cannot type in any further text anywhere on that screen.
    Any help on this??
    Shame, because the programme generally is superb.  Have transformed a number of pics already, and it would be nice to use the e-mail prog that's built in as I'd like to use it, adding text as required.  Otherwise, why have all the font and layout choices available if not??

    I tried the same and its changing at my side.
    Try to reset you preferences :
    Open PSE just to the Welcome Screen and press Ctrl + Alt + Shift (Mac: Cmd + Opt + Shift) and keep pressing.
    Click on organizer from the Welcome Screen but keep pressing the keyboard keys - don't let up.
    You will get a little dialog box asking if you want to delete the settings file. Click "Yes."  You can let go of the keyboard keys now. 
    This will rebuild the file for you and often solves the issue.
    Try to send the email again.

    According to your description, when you install the SQL Server 2012 Reporting Services Add-in for SharePoint 2013, you find the files are installed into the folder for sharepoint 2010(..../14). Right?
    In Reporting Services, Not all features are supported in all combinations of report server, Reporting Services add-in for SharePoint, and SharePoint Products. Please see the linke below:

    As you can see in the link, the SQL Server 2012 Reporting Services Add-in is only for Sharepoint 2010. This the reason why it's installed into the file for sharepoint 2010.

    As Mr. Olaf Helper said all you have to do is add Analysis Service as a new one on your existing instance here is what you have to do if you are new for this
    1-Click on Start on your computer >>>All Programs>>>Click on Microsoft SQL Server 2008  >>>Configuration Tools>>>SQL Server Installation
    Center
    2-  Click on New Installation or Add Feature to an Existing Installation as shown below 
    and then click on Analysis Service as shown on here 
    and then from this follow the installation wizard and you should be able to install it.
