Use tmpfs/ramdisk to speed up laptop?

Hi All,
I have a laptop with 3 gig of RAM, and a slow harddrive.
Basically I want to cache code, and run data directly, not-cached from the hard drive. For instance, when I use VLC to watch a movie, vlc would be cached in RAM, so it starts instantly, but the movie itself does not need to be cached at all. In fact, it hurts when the movie is cached, because then the movie will push programs out of the cache.
I have 2 partitions on my hard drive, one for data (/home and /storage) and one for the system (all other directories). It would be nice if I can mount /storage with the parameter "don't cache this pratition" I have not yet found such a parameter.
I could use a ramdisk with all my programs in it. This ramdisk will always be in RAM, so also my programs will always in ram. The problem with this approach is that I have 3 gig of ram (so my ramdrive can be 1.5GB), and my programs (/usr) is about 5 GB, so it will not fit.
What would happen when I create a tempfs mountpoint of 5 GB, and copy the entire /usr directory structure in it at boot time? It would require a swap partition of 3.5GB. Will this solution keep the most used programs in RAM, and the rest of the programs in swap, or is this a really stupid idea?

go-preload sounds like exactly what I need. Thank you for the suggestion. Would this work correctly when I have, say, firefox locked in ram, and I update firefox (with pacman -Suy)? Or should I re-run StartPreload.sh after everytime I update my system?

Absolutely. It is even quite straightforward and well-documented. You'll need to set up internet access on your phone first - your service provider will likely tell you how to do this.
Once that's done you'll be able to use the phone just like any old modem. But, you'll need to install drivers onto your pc first. The drivers are downloadable from this site, and are also included in the PC Suite application (also downloadable from this site). In order to connect the phone and the laptop together you have a choice of what technology to use. The choices are bluetooth (good - phone needs to be in same room as laptop), infrared (not quite so good - phone needs to be within a foot or so of the laptop and the Infrared ports on both laptop and phone need to be in line-of-sight with each other) or using the usb cable that came with the phone (good, except you need to carry the cable with you). I seem to remember that the PC Suite application takes a lot of the pain out of setting all this stuff up for you. Plus the phone manual (again, downloadable from this site) will help. One final thing - if you're planning on using the phone just to dial up your ISP, you're talking very slow connection speeds. It might be worth looking at gprs or edge. You don't need to do anything with the phone, just talk to your cellular service provider to get the service enabled. HTH, Pete

No, but you do not need iTunes to setup a new iPhone 5s. Create an iCloud backup for anything you want to transfer to the new iPhone.

Next, plug the Apple TV into your computer with a micro-usb cable (most phones today use these) and start up Itunes. It should detect the Apple TV in recovery.
After that, hold down Option on Apple or Alt on Windows and click Restore. This should open a window that allows you to select the software update you want to apply. Select the one you downloaded earlier.
It will then go through the restore process, which takes only a few minutes, and then you will be able to plug the Apple TV back in to your display and set it up again.
I recently ran into a similar issue with a bunch of these things and after restoring them all to the previous software version they are working again.

Close your iTunes,
Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
(Win XP SP2 n above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
netsh winsock reset
Hit "ENTER" key
Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

Just look at how many posts are on this forum, let alone the Boot Camp forum, about Windows on a Mac.
Got to any of the virtual machine software forums and take a look. Why do you thing there are 3 different virtual machine program available for the Mac to run Windows, let alone Apple's own Boot Camp system.
If it wasn't needed do you think Apple would have there own system for installing and running Windows on all Mac computers.
I personally don't know of any Mac users, and I know quit a few, that do not have a version of Windows installed on there Mac computers. Either in a boot camp partition or in one of the virtual machine programs.
There is some software that has just Windows versions. If you need that software and you own a Mac you need Windows to run it.

If your cellular data provider allows Personal HotSpot, go to Settings > Cellular > Set Up Personal Hotspot and create the hotspot WiFi, then login to that WiFi you have created with your laptop.

I had that too. On the bottom right of the AVG search page is a link which leads you to where you can switch it off. This restores normal Speed Dial operation.
This hijacking has really cheesed me off. I've just downloaded Avast and am going to put it on in place of AVG.

that's correct. Cloud software can be installed on Mac and/or Windows for no extra cost. No platform swapping process is required.
On the Mac simply sign in to creative.adobe.com with your Adobe ID and download the software. Same as you did on the PC.
