User disk space available showing less than actually available on drive

Can anyone tell me why the space available to a user would be different, less than, that on the drive?
My user home folder is showing only 72Gb available, while I've actually still got some 350Gb available on the drive, which I can see in the finder by clicking on the drive. I certainly haven't manually given myself a quota or anything.
I am using encryption, file vault. And I'm using time machine.

FileVault only encrypts the Home folder. It does so by creating a sparsebundle type of disc image file. Any space available information you see is related to the sparsebundle. As your Home folder expands in space usage so will the sparsebundle. However, if you remove files from the Home folder the sparsebundle will not shrink.

I noticed this morning that Terminal was giving a warning about running out of swap space, which I thought was odd, as /var/vm was only at around ~10GB, but later when I tried to install some updates, I noticed that it said I only had 1.8MB free on my hard drive. I ran a df -h and it showed %iused at 100%. I immediately deleted some logs to free up a few megabytes of space and started hunting for what could have been hogging all my disk space, I seem to remember having 60GB free last time I checked. I was deleting a few small files, when I noticed this
    bash-4.2# du -h -d 1
    6.2M          ./.DocumentRevisions-V100
    584K          ./.fseventsd
    583M          ./.Spotlight-V100

    52G          ./Users
    4.9G          ./usr
    4.0K          ./Volumes
    117G
So apparently, according to du, I am only using 117GB of my hard drive. I immediately ran this
    bash-4.2# df -h
Filesystem      Size   Used  Avail Capacity  iused   ifree %iused  Mounted on
    /dev/disk1     297Gi  283Gi   14Gi    96% 74220526 3630455   95%   /

    map auto_home    0Bi    0Bi    0Bi   100%        0       0  100%   /home
So my question is how is it that all of my files combined are using 117GB, including swap, but according to df, Disk Utility and Finder I am using 283GB? I am using FileVault 2, if that helps

The 300GB partition is the partition I am booting off of, and the one I was writing about. Disk0s1 is the EFI partition, 210MB. The other Internal hard drive is the core storage physical volume, already mounted, mounted in the image. Recovery HD is the 650MB system recovery partition.
I rebooted to the recovery partition and used Disk Utility to verify the volume, it said everything checked out alright.
In disk utility, the top entry has this data
Name :     Internal Hard Drive     Capacity :     319.21 GB (319,213,174,784 Bytes)
Type :     Logical Volume Group     Available :     16.8 MB (16,777,216 Bytes)
Disk Status :     Online     Used :     319.2 GB (319,196,397,568 Bytes)
However the other entry, right below it has this
         Mount Point :     /     Capacity :     318.88 GB (318,877,626,368 Bytes)
Format :     Encrypted Logical Partition     Available :     202.18 GB (202,175,160,320 Bytes)
Owners Enabled :     Yes     Used :     116.7 GB (116,702,466,048 Bytes)
Number of Folders :     241,519     Number of Files :     1,246,454
So I guess the reboot fixed my problem, df -h now shows 37% used, but the logical vomume group still shows only 16MB free. Anyways, things seem to be working now.

Activity monitor says I have 1 -3% of System Memory free, yet CPU usage shows less than 10% total of all processes

I think you should review what you wrote. There is no question, hence, my reply. I can't tell by the AM listing what applications are using memory. You need to click on the Real Mem column once or twice to display in descending order.
Aside from what you see in AM, what exactly is your problem or perceived problem. You are very low on Free Mem at the moment the screen shot was taken. Those displays are not depicting your computer's instantaneous memory usage.

Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

  • MacBook Pro w 500 GB hard drive less than 10% avail.

I have a MacBook Pro w 500 GB hard drive less than 10% avail.  My iPhoto file is huge, almost all of my space.  Apple tech support suggested a 2 GB Time Capsule. I haven't been able to set up iPhotos off of the laptop to work remotely in iphotos.  Is this the setup I should be going for or would buying a iMac with 3 GB hard drive be better solution?

I agree with Linc.  I suggest you upgrade your internal drive to a 1 TB drive for lots of space and a substantial boost of speed.  Managing one internal drive is much easier than managing external storage, especially when you consider the need to backup the data.
New 1 TB hybrid SSD-disk drives deliver high capacity with an 8 GB SSD buffer that performs at SSD-like speeds.  Google "Seagate 1 TB hybrid-drive 2.5”.

P.S.  If you do not have a backup drive you should get one.

  • EPM 2013 Report is displayed as cut off and shows less than half the width of the report in IE 10 and IE 9.

EPM 2013 Report is displayed as cut off and shows less than half the width of the report in IE 10 and IE 9.  This issue occurs for some users only.I tried the same url in google chrome and is working fine.
    Can you please help.
    Please find the attached screenshot.

    Hi BJ1986,
According to your description, I think this issue is caused by the IE browser that runs the report. To trouble shoot this issue, I suggest that we can try to clear internet temporary files, cookies and others in IE browser. And also add this site
as a trusted site in IE browser to check this issue again.
If this issue is still existed, it can also be occurred due to the setting or third party add-ons of Internet Explorer (IE). In this scenario, you can try to run IE in compatibility mode to check the issue again. Or I suggest that you can refer to the
steps below to troubleshoot the issue:
    Click Tools -> Internet options.
Switch to the Security tab, click Local intranet, and then select Default level.
Switch to the Advanced tab, and click Restore advanced settings.
Temporarily disable third party add-ons. For detailed steps, please see the link below:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/internet-explorer/manage-add-ons#ie
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks,

  • ATP quantity is less than the available stock.

    Hello,
A material is managed in batch.
When I create a delivery for a sales order the ATP quantity is showing less than available quantity.
    MMBE:
    Material: AAAA
    Storage Location: XX
Batch: 11001                      Unrestricted stock: 742750 KG                        Blocked Stock: 718000 KG
ATP quantity should be: 24,750 KG
Where as in VL01 while creating delivery it only suggests 24,500 Kg.
    What could be the reason.
Sensing deficit of stock, I am creating a planned order through MF50 for another 750 KG.
    Then in VL01 I get a proposal for 24750.
    Why is it so?

    Hi S P,
Did you check the all the points from OSS knowledge base article 1837190 - Non-confirmation in sales documents or deliveries because of inconsistency ?

  • HT1848 On itunes, when synced to my pc, I show less than half of the music that is on my iphone 4. How do I get all the music onto my pc?

I am about to scream if I don't figure this out or just decide to leave Apple and get a Galaxy phone. On itunes, when synced to my pc, I show less than half of the music that is on my iphone 4. How do I get all the music onto my pc? I have read many forums and tried many things, but apple/iTunes is not intuitive at least not on a PC. When I go to devices it won't let me select "transfer music". It's grayed out. Why is this and what can I do? I'd like to delete some of the music off of my iPhone but don't want it gone forever. Pleae help.

    Thanks Turingtest2,
I appreciate your response. I have done all of the things mentioned, but still when I click on "devices", the "transfer music" option is still not selectable. I see it, but can't select it.  I am running Windows 7 on my PC.
However, one thing I read makes me take pause. At one point I did erase my computer back to factory settings using the mirrored image. We backed up all information and put the important stuff back on, but I don't believe we did anything with iTunes, so it's a possibility that the music that is in my library now, may only be music I have purchased since then. But, (thinking out loud) that was a while ago and I am pretty sure I have purchased more music than what is in my iTunes library, since then.  Maybe I will approach it from that angle and see what happens.
It just doesn't make any logical sense that syncing goes from computer to device. Ostensibly then, my iPhone would only have the music that is on my computer after syncing and that is not the case. I still have all my music on my phone. I can see the new music that's on my phone get added to my iTunes library when I connect, which would make one think that syncing occurs both ways. I don't know. It's maddening. Maybe I should just follow my husbands advice and go to an Android. LOL. Or maybe I will take my laptop and phone to the Apple store and make them figure it out. Ha.
If you have any thoughts about this, let me know. Thanks again.

    I don't understand!
These information are contradctory. Now my account is locked.
What Am I supposed to do???
    thanks for your help!

Well as far as I can tell the only developed alternative to Apple is Microsoft, sure you want to go there?
iCloud (and Mobile Me before it) are consumer level systems, working correctly they are a poor choice for business use, if you want to stay all Mac try Zimbra if you can let a little Microsoft in the mix use Microsoft Exchange (Mail, iCal & Address Book are compatible as clients), hosted Exchange systems cost about $10 per month.
Or try to fix what is wrong with your installation (which is clearly not running as it should)

  • GR qty showing less than production order confirmation qty

    Hello Experts,
    Greetings.
My issue is while doing production order confirmation(CO12),for some materials it shows less GR quantity than the confirmation qty.I m wondering how it can be possible?
    What could be the problem?
    Plz advice.
    Thanks
    Nitin

Confirmed qty of each operation and delivery qty at the header are two different fields.   Confirmed qty will be the same with the yield to conf. during confirmation.  Whereas, the GR qty is equal to the total sum of quantity received from the order.
Check whether during confirmation you create auto GR or not.  If yes, then check the COGI t-code.  There might be some error log of goods receipt in there.  If no, then check GR qty in document goods movement compared to confirmed qty during confirmation.
    Hope it helps.

  • Unable to create the Variable icon which shows Less than or equal to

    Hi Experts,
when we create a variable normally will get a icon of the variable which say equal to symbol on the varaible icon. Hope everybody know that.
Now how can we change that variable icon to less than or equal.
Please can you provide me that information.
    Thanks alot !

    hi,
when you are trying to restrict the char select range values instead of variable.
then select the operator type (less than, greate than etc) and in place of value select variable and then give the variable name.
    regards,
    Arvind.

  • "Out of Disk Space" Error When there are 198GB available

We are attempting to capture a two hour video from VHS through an ADVC-300 box. We can capture short videos easily. For some reason we keep getting an "out of disk space" error even though there are 198GB free on the scratch disk which is an external LaCie hooked through USB 2. The settings for the scratch disk have the Limit Capture unchecked.
Any ideas why this is happening? I've seen some postings about timecodes effecting capture, but since this is VHS through a box, that should effect things, right?
    -Kirk

dont know if its the cause of the specific error, but USB2 is not at all suitable for capture, especially long captures
USB2 has excellent burst transfer rates but does not have the sustained transfer rate necessary for video capture

  • My mac is runnug out of disk space. Do /i need to by external drives?  how much memory should i get

My imac is running out of disk space. I download a lot of media from itunes. The HD movies and TV shows use so  much space. Should I switch to the cloud, clean up my memory or buy an external memory drive? If i get an external drive how much memory is suggesyed? 1TB, 2TB or more?

Buy an external hard drive on which to save your media. The drive should be large enough to handle your entire iTunes Library plus how much you would anticipate adding to the library over the next few years. Then backup your existing library to the external drive: iTunes- Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive.
After you have backed up the library to the external drive you can configure iTunes to use the library on the external drive in iTunes > Preferences > Advanced. Change the path to the external drive. Once you do that quit and relaunch iTunes. It should now be using the library on the external drive. Now you can delete the library on the internal hard drive to free up the space.
