Using 2 Apple Extreme's

Hi,
Here is my situation: I have a GigE Apple Extreme on the 1st floor, while my laptop is on the 2nd floor. On the 2nd floor, I usually get about 4MB/sec at best, while right in front of the router, I get about 7.5MB/sec.
The question is: if I buy a second GigE Apple Extreme, can I link them up (extend?) so as to achieve a speed closer to 7.5MB/sec? My goal is to get at least a constant 6MB/sec.

My configuration with two AEBSn:
AliMac wired <--> AEBSn <--> wireless <--> AEBSn <--> wired MacMini
(all machines 10.5.2, AEBSn gigabit latest firmware 5GHz only n mode)
My problem: from AliMac to Mini the transfer rate is about 2 MB/sec. In the other direction from Mini to AliMac it's only about 100 kB/sec.
This is the slow direction (Mini to AliMac). The AEBSn seems unable to establish a stable connection
And here it is much faster like it must be (AliMac to Mini)
There are no interferences or problems with channels. I replaced well working AP Express and AEBS snow by two AEBSn.
Any expert here with an idea how to get the bridge mode working in both directions?

  • Use Apple Extreme with Comcast gateway

I recently upgraded my Comcast internet service.  I received a Cisco gateway DPC3941T.  I would like to use my Apple Extreme for my wifi network.  In other words, I do not want to use the wifi network from the Cisco gateway.  Could I get help getting directions on how to do this?
I have reviewed other threads and got confused -- do I put the Cisco gateway in bridge mode or do I put the Apple Extreme into bridge mode.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
I've just got my new DPC3941T and having the same issue. I'm able to get around 90MB on 5G wireless connection to my Airport Extreme and MBP, however, I'm only getting low 40s to 50s on 2.4G. When I switch to wireless connection to my DPC3941T, I'm getting over 100MB on both 2.4G and 5G. My Airport Extreme is 2 years old and is running on 7.7.3 firmware.
I too am running doubleNAT and I'm not letting it bother me, however, because none of my macs can be wired for internet, and I have to have my Airport as a part of my network (other devices and such), I would like to know how to get this issue fixed, as bridging either one of the routers didnt help, but whats more puzzling and upsetting is that I can get better download on 5G from Aiport, which is closer to my advertized speed by comcast, but not on my 2.4G. Whats up with that?
p.s. Just in case this info has any relevance...due to a space and wire constrictions, my DPC3941T and Airport Extreme are about 3 feet apart. Unfortunately I cant separate them more, due to my entertainment center's setup and wiring in my living room. I'm not using my WiFi on DPC3941T, only wired (one wire goes to my Airport and another goes for my CCTV), so if wireless signal has to be disabled for DPC3941T I have no problem with that, just let me know if it has to be done.
Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the time and help in advance.

  • How do I set permissions between iMac and Macbook Pro using apple extreme base station hooked up to comcast modem

I am trying to share files on my iMac with my wife's macbook Pro for which I am set up as a second user with administration privileges.  I think i have the computers finding each other (for example my iMac shows up on the shared list in my wifes's finder window), but when I try to open a file it says I do not have permission(s).  Is there a manual I can look at that walks me through this step by step.
I know I have to mark files on my iMac to allow for sharing.  How do I designate a particular user as having permission to share.  I only want to be able to share my iMac when I am logged in on my user account on the Macbook Pro (and vise versa, I would like to be able to access the files on the Macbook Pro, when I am logged in as the user on my iMac.
Thank you for your assistance and precious time.

    Through a browser.
I am supposed to have it set so that it is placed at:
    http://c5414.airsight.net  but nothing gets there.
Some places have mention that I need to set up port forwarding,
others have mentioned DDNS or UPNP,
How do I do these or is there a better way to send http://10.0.11.1/main.html

  • Using both an Apple Extreme and Apple Express??

I am using Apple Extreme for my everyday use - Just purchased a new Yamaha receiver with a LAN for Pandora, etc. I plugged it in to my airport express and just getting a blinking yellow light. Looked for it in the networks in area but didn't show - is there something I need to do to get this configured or to see it on my Extreme? Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Thanks.
Hold in the reset button on the AirPort Express for 9-10 seconds and then release it. Allow a full minute for it to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Unplug the power on the Express and temporarily move it to the same room as the AirPort Extreme for the setup.
Power up the Express and let it run a minute.
Open AirPort Utility and click on the tab at the upper left corner of the window that reads Other AirPort Base Stations (1).
    Click on AirPort Express xxxxxx
Wait a minute or two while AirPort Utility analyzes the network and then announces that the Express will be configured to "Extend" your network.
Enter in a name for the AirPort Express device
    Click Next
Wait a few minutes to allow AirPort Utility to read the setttings on the AirPort Extreme and configure the AirPort Express with the settings that it needs
When you see the message that Setup is Complete, click Done
Unplug the Express and move it to the desired location and power it back up. Wait a minute for a green light.
Make sure the AV receiver is powered off
Connect a known good working Ethernet cable from the LAN <-> port on the Express to the AV receiver and power up the receiver.
    Check things out.

  • HT4262 Is there any way to extend my Apple Extreme Base Station using an Apple Express by via ethernet or does it only work via wifi and being in range?

From what I read, the only way to extend my Apple Wifi Network is via another Apple Airport Extreme or Express using overlapping wifi zones. If I try to connect my Apple Express to my Apple Extreme via Ethernet, then this is guaranteed to fail regardless of how I configure the Express. Is that correct?

It is certainly possible and better....in terms of performance.....to connect the AiPort Express to your AirPort Extreme using Ethernet to extend the network that way.
If you are having problems with this, then your setup is not correct....or....if your setup is correct, you may have a defective AirPort.
We can walk you through the steps to get things set up correctly if we can get some basic information to provide the correct settings.
What is the model number of the AirPort Extreme?
What is the model number of the AirPort Express?
if you are not sure, look on the bottom of the Extreme and side or bottom of the Expess. The model number starts with an "A" followed by four numbers.
We also need to know what operating system you are using on your computer. If you have a Mac, click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen, then click About This Mac and post back with the OS X Version number that you see there.
We will likely have more questions about your current setup to understand things a bit better, so please be patient.

  • Am I able to use a Hawking 300 Range Extender with the Apple Extreme connected to a PC?

I am puchasing an Apple Extreme to replace a Linksys router connected to a PC with Win7.  I have been using two Hawking 300 Range extenders to get a better single throughout my home.  Will I be able to continue to connect the Hawking 300 Range Extenders to the Apple Extreme?

Will I be able to continue to connect the Hawking 300 Range Extenders to the Apple Extreme?
Apple's "extend a wireless network" feature on the AirPort Extreme appears to be a proprietary setting that only works with other Apple products.
So, it is extremely unlikely that the Hawking devices will work with the AirPort Extreme.
    No harm in trying though.
    Please post on your findings.

  • Just bought Apple Extreme. Can I use my old Linksys extender to boost signal in a closed area?

Can anyone tell me if I can still use an existing Linksys Wireless Range Extender (WRE 54G) with my new Apple Extreme Routher please?

Apple uses proprietary settings for their "extend a wireless network" feature, which are designed to only allow other Apple device to extend the network. Therefore, it is extremely unlikely that a Linksys product would be able to wirelessly extend an Apple network.
If you plan to connect the Linksys 54G to the Apple AirPort Extreme using a wired Ethernet connection, then you could set up the Linksys router to provide more wireless signal coverage that way. Configure the Linksys router in bridge mode to provide a wireless network using the same wireless network name, same wireless security setting and same password as the Apple network.

  • Re : Apple TV doesn't connect to a Wi-Fi Broadband Internet Service using Airport Extreme

Hi, using Airport Extreme (Airport Utility version 6.3.2, Internet :DHCP, Router mode : Off (Bridge)) with a Wi-Fi Broadband Internet service. My Desktop (iMac), Macbook,iPhone,iPad join the Airport Extreme Wirelessi network (WPA/WPA2 Personal) easily and Broadband ISP Login-page pops up with username & password options. However, in case of Apple TV (2nd Generation Software : 6.0.2 (6646.81.1)), it connects the Airport Extreme W-Fi network easily but no Broadband ISP Login-page pops up with username & password options. Even using the Ethernet connection of the said Wi-Fi Broadband Internet Service directly to the Apple TV, no internet network connects. Please help.

There is no way you can handle login details with the ATV and there is probably no way you can do it with extreme in router mode either.. If you need to use a login name and password via a html screen then that is impossible in a device without html.
But your newest addition confuses me.
A slight correction in the question : the Broadband Internet Service isn't Wireless, but having Ethernet connection to the Airport Extreme.
So how do your iphones pop up a login page.
easily and Broadband ISP Login-page pops up with username & password options.
The alternative method is to use a computer .. login to your service and use ICS through the computer to the ATV..

  • Using an apple extreme with an apple express as a wired bridge for roaming. Thinking of adding a wireless express to extend network.

    Hi
I have an Apple extreme AC installed with an Apple Express N setup as a bridge through ethernet to extend my network. Im thinking of adding another express to a location that has no ethernet.
All I should need to do is set the extreme for "extend my Network" and setup the express that way as well?
    Thanks!

You should not have to make any changes at all on the AirPort Extreme.
Temporarily, locate the new Express near the AirPort Extreme and power it up for a few minutes
    On the iPad....
Tap Settings on the home screen
    Tap WiFi
Look for a listing of Setup a new AirPort Base Station
    Tap on AirPort Express
The setup utility will take a minute to analyze things, then announce that the Express will be configured to extend the AirPort Extreme network
Enter a device name that you want use for the Express and tap Next
Wait a minute while things are set up for you, then tap Done when you see the Setup Complete message.
Now move the Express to a location that is about half way between the AirPort Extreme and the area that needs more wireless coverage and power it back up
Everything above assumes that the AirPort Extreme was set up correctly by 10.6.8.  It would have been better to use the iPad for the setup of the new AirPort Extreme, but what is done is done.

  • Streaming netflix through apple tv using airpot extreme.

I am having trouble streaming netflix through my apple tv using airport extreme router.  How can I fix this problem?

    What kind of problems?
Accessing Netflix from AppleTV or Airplaying Mirroring via iPad (which would be pointless as it's available on AppleTV direct even if it worked)?
Does other stuff like movie rentals, iTunes previews work ok?

  • I currently use Airport Extreme Wanting to extend using another apple airport express

How to set up Airport Express when already using Airport Extreme to extend range.

Extending the range of an 802.11n network
AirPort Utility makes it simple to extend the range of an 802.11n network if you are connecting another 802.11n base station. Connecting two 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Stations greatly simplifies the WDS setup process.
To extend the range of an 802.11n network:
Open AirPort Utility and select the base station that will connect to the Internet.
Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
Next, select the base station that will extend this network, and choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
Enter the network name and wireless password if necessary.
Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.

  • Best way to use Airport Extreme dual band with Netgear FR114P?

Years ago a friend connected via ethernet our G4 (10.4.11) and an old Blueberry iMac (10.4.11) to a Netgear FR114P Router(?) which is connected to a modem from TimeWarner Cable on our second floor. We also have an ethernet connection downstairs for a Windows XP laptop. We can all get on the internet easily, but we have never been able to connect wirelessly or to let one printer serve everyone in the house. My grandchildren now all have these wonderful Apple devices (iPhones, iPads, iPods, Macbooks), and I would like them to be able to connect wirelessly, and I would like to have a real network so we can all use the printer and scanner, but still preserving the integrity of our hard drives. We just bought 2 refurbished iMacs, an Apple Extreme Base Station (dual), and an Apple Express access point. How best to proceed to achieve the desired outcome? If the language is not too technical, I think I’ll be able to follow the directions.
I am reluctant to mess with the Netgear connection which is working. I am hoping I can remove the hard-wired G4 and put the 27” iMac in its place. Then, I am hoping I can connect the AEBS to the Netgear router and somehow magically create a situation wherein all the computers & some of the devices can talk to each other and to the peripherals wirelessly? Is that possible? I’ve read some of the discussions, even one about a Netgear FR114P, but it was dated 2007 so I’m not sure it applies to my situation. Should I just get rid of the Netgear? I don’t want to spend 20 hours without any kind of internet connection and get into a frustrating situation as one of the previous writers did. I am happy to proceed methodically and get it right the first time. Thanks so much for reading this long-winded thing. If this problem is already recently addressed in this forum, perhaps you will be kind enough to give me the link.

  • Using Apple TV as a multi-room music server

I am trying to decide whether Apple TV is a good choice for use as a multi room wireless music server. I would rather use Apple TV than say Sonos because I like Apple TV's video capabilities. My decision is going to be largely based on Apple TV's/iTunes/Airtunes compatibility with my current 2 zone home theater system.
Right now the AV/wireless system looks like this:
-2 Zone Denon AV receiver wired to wall mounted speakers in the living room and kitchen/patio.
-Airport Extreme wired into cable modem
-Wall mounted speakers upstairs in bedroom (not connected to any amplifier)
    Ideally I want to add
-Apple TV wired to Denon receiver/TV w/ hdmi cable
-inexpensive AV receiver/amp in bedroom to power wall mounted speakers
-Airport Express jacked into receiver to stream iTunes library from Apple TV
    -Everything controlled with iPhone
    Questions:
    1. Will this work?
    2. Any idea what my best options for an inexpensive Airtunes friendly amp/receiver are?

BorrachoPix, An excellemt thread. Always good to know others doing or intending to set up same similar systems. So many options these days it takes a fair while going through them all. I ruled out Squeezebox as not being user friendly enough and was going the Sonos route untill Apple released the itouch remote app which changed everything and gave me an excuse to get an itouch into the bargin as well !!!!!
Have you though of using a pair of Active speakers instead of Amp and Speakers in the bedroom. Maybe the AudioEngine A2 or A5 Speakers.
Jask, I use to have the 3801 before changing to the 2807. Will probably do as you suggest and go optical and component video to the amp keeping the HDMI slots for SkyHD and the DVD player. I always find the Denon set up menu a bit of a nightmare but usually get there in the end.
Perhaps I should be thinking about an iMac for next year as well to complete the circle......just not sure I can justify the expense.

  • I have an airport extreme and express, if I use the extreme as a base station connected to my old router can I use the express to extend the signal while also creating a new network that only I can use?

I have an airport extreme and express, if I use the extreme as a base station connected to my old router can I use the express to extend the signal while also creating a new network that only I can use? Essentially having two wifi connection off the same network? If so how do I set this up?

Extending using a wireless connection always results in a performance compromise.
If the Express is going to extend using a wireless connection, then the Express will need to be located about half way between the AirPort Extreme and the general area where you need more wireless coverage. The more that you have line-of-sight between the Extreme and Express, the better the network will operate.
Remember......the Express can only "extend" the quality and signal speed that it receives, so it needs to be located where it can get a very good signal from the Extreme. Although Apple cleverly uses the term "extend", a more accurate term for the Express would be "repeater".
If the Express will extend by connecting to the Extreme using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection......highly recommended for best performance.....then the Express can be located exactly where you need more wireless coverage. There is no signal loss at all through the Ethernet cable, so the Express gets a full speed signal no matter where it might be located.
Post back to let us know which way to you want to go.
