Using a screen recording in FCP

I made a screen recording that I want to import into FCP. However, when I try to import the recording, I get a file error. It says this:
"File Error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown."
Any help importing this file is appreciated. It is a QuickTime file that I am trying to import.
Thanks,

He's asking WHAT CODEC did you record as? That certain flagship media player is a container that can wrap around many different codecs. Not all of those codecs are editable.
iShowU is a good screen capture software. Not free, but cheap.

  • Settings required for importing a QT Screen recording into FCP

I have just recorded a screen recording using QT and need to import it into FCP. I have tried, but an error message comes up saying FCP can not read the format. File error 1 - What do I need to do when exporting out of QT so I can import and edit in FCP??

QuickTime Player's Screen recording function makes H264 video clips You can't use those in FCP.
Convert to ProRes LT using either Compressor or MPEG Streamclip.

  • When using quicktime screen recorder, the recording changes colors

Please help me out!! So I've had my macbook air for a while now and I've used the quicktime screen recorder multipul times, but latley something changed. When I go to record my screen everything works fine, and once its finished and I've saved it it's still normal. But once I go to import it into imovie the entire recording turns red, I can still see the recording but everything is just red! Everywhere else the recording looks fine, but its only when I try to put it into imovie that it changes colors. Its never done this before and all of my past screen recordings work fine.
Does anyone know what I can do to fix it?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you

    Hello meaganmarie,
I am assuming you have quicktime up to date (10.3)
    When recording a game window,
    - select quicktime
    - go to file > New Movie Recording
    - select your game window like a rectangular marquee selection (drag and make a rectangle filling only your game window
    - stop when done and save
This way the endtire screen (including youe desktop) won't be seen, just your selected game window.

  • Why cant I use the screen record feature on quicktime 7.7.2

i have recently got apple QuickTime player 7.7.2 pro. One of the main reasons I got it is because i knew in past versions they had the screen record feature, but on the 7.7.2 pro version it didn't. i was disappointed that it didn't have the feature that the other versions had. before i got it i decided to update the version I had (The one with the screen record feature) and now i wish i didn't update it. I think the screen record feature was cool and i dont know why its gone. Also i am using windows.

QuickTime Player Pro has never included screen capturing features.
QuickTime X (found in Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion) does include screen capture features.

  • Quicktime screen recording to FCP

I am able to do a screen recording with QT 10.  Then, with qt 7 I have all kinds of export options - none of which I've found yet to be compatible for import to FCP.  I'm getting an "unknown file error when I try to import."  Is there a way to export/import my screen recording?  What would be the export settings.  My sequence in FCP is NTSC 720x480.
    thanks -
    Kay

    David,
That didn't work.  What did work was to take the qt movie through mpg streamclip and do the conversion then export.  On another note...I'm new to the forum; I've read the tutorials; I still don't understand how to search for a topic without posting my question.  I clicked "don't post" because I found my answer...but it posted the question anyway.  So are there any more user forum tutorials?

  • QuickTime X - Screen recording - can't import into FCP 7.0

Well, the title pretty much says it all.
I upgraded to Snow Leopard on my MacBookPro 2.4GHzCore2Duo4GB RAM. No problems.
I ran the new QuickTime X and made a short screen recording. Saved to desktop; I get a .mov file.
Ran Final Cut Pro 7.0 after recently upgrading to FCS 3, tried to import the screen recording, get error message "File error: unknown file."
    What's up?
The file can be read by iMovie '09, by the way - not that I would ever use that software.

Man, I'm wishing it were THAT easy.
I'm needing to do this exact workflow, and still can't find a way to make FCP happy.
    ATTEMPT #1:
First, I used QT X to make a two-minute Screen Recording. It creates a file called "Screen Recording.mov" in the Movies folder, with the file's dimensions being the same as my 23" Cinema Display (1920x1200). As we already know -- even though "Get Info" describes this file as simply a "QuickTime movie" using Apple's H.264 codec, something YOU'D THINK would be perfectly compatible with APPLE's flagship professional editing program -- it's not.
"File Error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown. OK"
    ATTEMPT #2:
So I quit the new QuickTime, and open the "Screen Recording.mov" file in QT7. I select "Export...", and I go with the default "Movie to QuickTime movie" option (which seems redundant, but the other choices in the pull down list don't look all that appropriate). I give the about-to-be-created new file a revised name, and then QuickTime7 chugs away for several minutes, converting the QuickTime movie QuickTime X created into a QuickTime7 QuickTime movie which hopefully the QuickTime-based FinalCutPro editing program will be gracious enough to import.
I really hope someone at Apple is taking note of how absurd this all sounds. And that would be okay, if when I then tried to Import this new QuickTime file into FinalCutPro 7, I didn't get the EXACT SAME (and typically unhelpful and uninformative) error message:
"File Error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown. OK"
    ATTEMPT #3:
Okay -- an "editable codec". So I once again open the "Screen Recording.mov" file in QT7. I select "Export...", but this time I click on "Options...", then "Settings...", and then for "Compression Type", I select Apple ProRes 422. Hey, that's gotta work, right? It's ProRes -- by Apple. The new codec in which everything's supposed to play together nicely. Why the Timeline I've currently got open is even ProRes422.
So imagine my delight when I try to Import this latest version of the file (now inflated from 140MB to 1.2GB -- but hey, at least it's gonna work)...
"File Error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown. OK"
Well no, it's not OK. And when FCP finally gets the top-to-bottom, under-the-hood AND interface overhaul this one-foot-still-stuck-in-OS9 app so desperately needs, maybe it will at least provide HELPFUL error messages, something like: "Sorry -- this file can't be imported because xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. You can use xxxxxxxxxxxxxx to convert its xxxxxxxxx setting to the required xxxxxxx, or you can try xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx in a new Timeline."
(And yes, I am a regular contributor to "Apple Feedback".)
Alright, venting finished. Would now be hugely grateful if someone could translate Apple's cryptic "-- 1 file(s) recognized --" error message into a real-world way to make what should be a straightforward process actually work: just save a simple screen recording, and then use that screen recording in a Final Cut project?
    Thank you!

  • Advice for Making Screen Recorded Videos for FCP

I want to use some screen recording software to record some tutorials on using various features of a website. The video will later be imported into FCP where I will edit it, add transitions, titles and voice overs. The final videos will be uploaded to YouTube.
    1. Can anyone recommend a size that I should use when recording my screen? Should I start as high as possible and later downconvert?
    2. What is a good size to upload to YouTube these days for something like this where I want to make sure the user will be able to see the details of a link, button, etc.?
    Thanks!

This is an excellent app that will allow you to edit, add bells and whistles, and compress and post all within the application:

Can someone tell me how to still hear the computer audio (like the application sound) on while using quicktime screen recording when using headset?
Someone help me please or tell me another application to do this with.

    hi paula
your problem could be hardware/software. lets hope its software issue first and i'd like you to do these:
if you have personal files on volume c, copy/backup them. shut down your computer, press one key recover button to perform clean windows installation. then check if the issue still persists.
if you don,t want to use okr, you can use windows restore to restore your computer to previous restore points but if it's windows/virus issue, it may not help.

  • Problem importing quicktime "screen recording"... Please Help.

I've made a screen recording using the "screen recording" feature on the new quicktime 10.0. I would like to edit this video file in FCP but I cannot get it imported into my project. I've tried to convert this file using Quicktime pro 7.6.3 export but I can't seem to get it right.... Any help here is appreciated.

I believe that QT feature records in h.264.
You will need to convert it to an appropriate editing format
    Try using MPEG Streamclip

  • Cuts from Screen Recording do not export properly

I did a simple screen recording using Quicktime X. I used Mpeg Streamclip to convert it to the codec of my timeline. I inserted a few short cuts from the screen recording. Everything looked great. However, when I export the timeline, the cuts from the screen recording do not export with the set in and out points they were cut to. The cuts, and only the cuts, from the screen recording seemed to shift in time. Its as if FCP did a random slip edit to the screen recording cuts. really weird.
I then exported each cut to an individual self-contained quicktime file, and I got the exact same results. And the shifts in time were also exactly the same. really weird. Did Apple put some kind of restriction on using the screen recordings in FCP??
    any suggestions on a workaround?

I sorta found a workaround myself. Instead of converting the entire screen recording clip in Mpeg Streamclip, I simply set the specific in and out points I wanted in Mpeg Streamclip and exported the clips that way. Once in FCP, there was no extra footage for the random slip edits to occur and the final export looked as it was intended. I am still interested in any other possible solutions.

  • Screen Recording Help

I have used a screen recording software and the file is not displaying properly in Windows Movie Maker. The original file itself works fine, but when I want to add things Movie Maker fails. I have already used my Photoshop trial and I have purchased Photoshop in the past. I would like to find out if Photoshop will have this same error in your software and if I can get proof that it doesn't exist I will re-purchase the software. https://archive.org/details/PhotoshopHelp Left side is the recording. The right side is after windows movie maker. Will your software do the same thing? And does photoshop have screen capturing and a movie studio? I want to place the mp3 over the video and then have an introduction.

First of all the use a user forum you're not dealing with Adbe here. Your concern rambles all over the place has not identified what error you have in Microsoft software or even identified exactly what you want to do or what the things are the that you want to add.  You state you have purchased photoshop in the past but did not identify the version.   You state you used your trial of some version of Photoshop but not which version.
Photoshop like all active programs its maintained continue to evolve and improve like most software it contains some bugs most will be fixed at some point in time.
You ask if some undisclosed problem in a Microsoft Movie Maker application does not exist in Photoshop and you want proof that is does not.
To answer your rambling rant.  I would point out Photoshop is not a video editor by design.  That as of Photoshop CS6 Photoshop has same basic video editing features.  Yes you can add an additional audio track to video in Photoshop Video timeline. However it you want to do video editing you should look into applications designed for video editing for example Adobe Premier and Adobe After Effects. You should not be looking at images editing software other then addition software to aid your video edition.

  • HT201066 Why does "New Screen Recording" record in Photo-JPEG codec?

Something's changed on me... Now when I use QuickTime to record (using "New Screen Recording"), it records the portion of the screen I've selected same as always but the resulting file is way fat.
Get Info says its recorded as: codec Photo-JPEG.
It used to record in H.264 but now it's a bloated file and this screwy wrong format.
    Why?
How do I change it back to record screen as a H.264 file?
I see only options for Quality: Medium or High. (I choose Medium.)
I'm using latest Lion and QT.
    Any ideas...? Thanks

Further research answered my question. Found my answer posted by QuickTimeKirk on a related topic:
"There are two options for quality in the screen recording set up (Medium and High). Medium uses Photo-JPEG codec and High uses H.264. Medium quality actually makes much higher file sizes."
My thanks to QuickTimeKirk. Since I haven't seen any of this extremely helpful info posted here or in a Google web search, I must assume I'm the only idiot on the block. However, let's get the word out.

  • QuickTime Screen Recorder Very Slow in Mountain Lion

Is anyone else having problems with the QuickTime screen recorder in Mountain Lion vs in Snow Leopard? I remember it being light in Snow Leopard, but now, it hogs CPU and GPU (I think) cycles. Most of the time, what I'm trying to record (even just Safari or Finder windows) slows down because of it. Is there a fix for this? My computer is perfectly capable of running Mountain Lion and is much more powerful than my older Mac, which could use the screen recorder just fine in Snow Leopard.
I've also noticed that, if you choose to record audio from a mic, it doesn't start recording video until you make a detectable sound. I can tell by the bitrate meter it shows. This is stupid in my opinion... It should just start when I tell it to.

File a bug report with Apple. Aside from that, I can't help.

  • Quicktime Screen Recorder Movie Won't Import to iMove

I recorded a Skype interview using Quicktime Screen Recorder and want to import it into iMovie for some quick edits before posting online. However, iMovie says it doesn't support the movie. I've tried exporting it via Quicktime to iTunes and other iPad & Apple TV formats but the import process still isn't working. What am I missing? iMovie used to be able to do this in Snow Leopard, but now that I'm all up to date with the newest iMovie and Yosemite OS I can't do it anymore? Please help!

I wish I knew how to tell you that. Where would I see that info?
I use the older v0.7.50 version of MediaInfo. E.g., here are the specs for the 1880x1800 upscaled video clip I made:
And these are the specs for the original screen recording before upscaling:
Unfortunately, I had to use QT 7 Pro to upscale which adds an additional layer codec settings. Would normally prefer to examine a sample problem file itself and test it on my own system in a known environment. Am basically trying to determine if there is anything obviously suspect about your file or whether it is more likely that your iMovie install is bad. For instance, you said that such movies imported correctly under Snow Leopard but did not indicate if the problem file will import to the older system or will import under Yosemite on a different platform if either/both options are available to you.
