Using AppleScript to kick off an iDisk 'sync-now'

I'm using my iDisk to synchronize project work between my MacBook Pro and my Mac Pro.
Unfortunately, I get problems when syncing my iDisk as some files throw up errors due to 'symlinks'. It's not too much trouble as the files at fault are only temporary and can be deleted before syncing.
To get around the problem, I decided to switch to manual iDisk syncing & write an AppleScript to simply delete a few folders and kick off a sync.
The record command in the Script Editor doesn't seem to recognize the 'sync' command. Does anyone know if it can potentially be triggered?
So to cut a long story short; 'How do I trigger an iDisk sync via AppleScript'?

No, it doesn't have to be an exe... but you have to actually run java.exe just like on the command line.
You can kill it if you hold onto the Process object it returns. Read the API docs for java.lang.Runtime and java.lang.Process

.Mac iDisk syncing preventing reliable Restarts/Shut Downs in Leopard

I have been experiencing a Restart/Shut Down reliability issue with my new iMac and Leopard 10.5.1. This evening an Apple rep I know pointed me to a work-around in Apple Discussions:

This thread notes the discovery by one user that iDisk automatic syncing is not working reliably, and is preventing consistent restarting/shutting down of your Mac. Although, syncing has been working reliably for me both for .Mac stuff, and the iDisk itself, if you do a Get Info on your iDisk it reports, at least for me, that its capacity is 1TB, with 466GB available. I have only the standard 10GB .Mac account, and only 5GB of that is allocated to my iDisk, so something is clearly amiss with the .Mac iDisk setup, as being reported from the .Mac server. If you check your Console logs, you may also see this recurring error message, which is reporting a syncing error, although my syncs have, as I've said, been working correctly:

To summarize, if you turn off automatic iDisk syncing in your System Preferences/.Mac/iDisk preference pane, you'll have no problems restarting/shutting down. You may also need to do the power management reset (turn off Mac, unplug all devices and power for 15 seconds, reconnect, and start up) and the parameter RAM reset (reboot while holding down the cmd-opt-P-R keys). You can do this in one restart cycle, if you like. After that, restarts/shutting down has worked perfectly for me.
Of course, I actually USE my iDisk, and will be leaving it on. But, at least I know now how to work around the restart/shut down issue.
I hope Apple adds this fix to their 10.5.2 update next month.

Moving a layer in Photoshop CS5 using Applescript

I have a layer in a document called "logo" and i want to duplicate it to every open document and then move it to a specific spot in each document
I got the duplicating thing happening but cant seem to move the bounds of the layer (says it is read only and cannot be changed)

anyone know what the language is to move the layer around?

In any language the way to move a layer x,y is to use translate… You will need to do the math from current x,y to required x,y given a distance… A read only property is just that regardless of language… Here is a quick example of how I did this kind of thing using Applescript… I still do the same method now but use the ESTK instead…

You should get the general idea of how this works from this. It should move the first layer across 1 inch, down i inch then put it top/left. It assumes you have a layer that is not a background layer nor is it locked in any way…

Kicking off workflow from webdynpro using events?

I have abap experience but no workflow. Any advice will be appreciated.
I have to kick off a workflow from webdynpro. I assume that I have to set up a business object (eg. ZOBJECT), create an event therein (eg. ZEVENT).
Then when webdynpro runs I use a rfc function module to trigger this event.
The questions I have are:
1. How do I set up the workflow to be triggered by this event?
2. Do I set up an event in Business object builder or in SM62?
3. How do I trigger an event in a function module. I have found SWE_EVENT_CREATE but don't want to create an event just want to trigger the event and in turn set off the workflow?

Problem kicking off process chains using Tivoli Job Scheduling

In our pre-production BW system testing,when the process chains are being kicked off through Tivoli,they are not working.
We dont get issues when the chains are run directly in BW,without using Tivoli.
The jobs with 'after event' RSPROCESS setting that kick off next node on each node's completion,are not leaving out a 'copy' after a scheduled run.
So in the next run from Tivoli,the dependency job isnt there in scheduled status,which fails the chain.
We tried manually copying the dependency jobs on the nodes.Doing this,chain does kick off from Tivoli.But again jobs dont leave copies and next run from
Tivoli fails.We tried using 'periodic job' setting.This leaves copies of job.But then why is BW able to copy out and kick off jobs,while this isnt happening when kicked off through Tivoli.
A node in the process chain is BLUE when it has a scheduled job ready in sm37,but turns GREY(no scheduled job is there in sm37),once the Tivoli kicks off chains after the manual copy.
We suspect this either to be a authorization problem or an issue with how it works when kicked off through Tivoli.Process chain 'context' is somehow not created when it runs through Tivoli.
Anyone seen such an issue before?Suggestions are welcome..

The chain does get kicked off from Tivoli.
But the job fails in Tivoli as..when it tries to hand over execution to the 1st local chain in the 'meta chain' the required job isnt there in scheduled status,with the 'after event' RSPROCESS dependency set on it.

Cannot shut-off iDisk syncing!!

I just tried about 10 times to go to .Mac (Tiger) preferences and turn OFF iDisk Syncing. I can set it for Automatic or Manual, but I canNOT turn it off. It keeps going back to "ON".

From your description it appears that the iPod is on like it showing something on the screen. In that case let the battery fully drain. After charging for an hour try a rest restore and other things again.
If the iPod returns to the same conditions then it is time for an appoitment at the Genious Bar of an Apple store.

Problem using Java Webstart to kick off CORBA Client

the CORBA Client, I set up the JNLP file jvm properties as following:

The problem I have is that when the webstart starting the client, the
client just simply dies during the startup and I find the log message
following:

So it is showing that there is problem with the vbroker.orb.initRef
setting, know that if I don't use the webstart to start the client and
simply use the windows batch file, using the jvm properties as:
java -Dvbroker.orb.initRef=NameService=corbaloc::10.31.51.80:20001/NameService
It would work perfectly.
Could you tell if I miss anything when configuing the webstart jnlp
file on this regard? Currently, I think that the only way I can set
the JVM properties in the JNLP file is to use its properties tag to
set the system properties for the application.

i recently upgraded my router to WRT300N. but when i use my wireless phones it kicks my 2 other computers (and my xbox 360) off the internet (all wireless). didnt happen with the other router, any suggestions?

FIM 2010 - Set Population not kicking off workflow

Hi,
I am having a problem with Set Transition kicking of a MPR, in FIM 2010 R2 which I have never seen before after numerous implementations of both FIM and FIM R2.
Scenario:
My MPR kicks off a workflow which adds 6 sync rules, to users based on the "set transition in" set with criteria IsADConnected=true.
The user is transitioned into this set but the MPR never fires. Everything is enabled and I have checked everything obvious. When I view the set in the "Sets" screen in FIM I can see that the user has transitioned in, and is a computed member based
on my criteria "IsADConnected=true"
The "FIM_MaintainSetsJob" job runs at 1am which auto corrects set membership and this does cause the MPR to kick off and consequently the sync rules to be applied. So it does work, just not when it should.
What I have tried to fix this:
Created a new workflow, set and MPR which does exactly the same job as the "broken" Set/MPR/workflow - Same thing happens (ie. it doesn't work)
I read on one post that someone re-indexed the FIM service database and this fixed it for them - I tried this also but no joy. (some indexes were at 98/99% but they have been reduced after reindexing)
Has anyone ran into this issue before and does anyone have any idea what can cause it? It's doing my head in at this stage!

HT4623 Getting kicked off an App

Help! When i am on an App on my Ipad there are many times when I get kicked off and the screen on the ipad goes to the home screen. This is rediculice! What can I do???

Standard troubleshooting...
Try a reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.
Remove all apps from Recently Used list...
- From any Home Screen, double tap the home button to bring up the Recents List
- Tap and hold any icon in this list until they wiggle
- Press the red (-) to delete all apps from this list.
- Press the home button twice when done.
If still a problem restore with your backup.
If still a problem restore as new, i.e. without your backup. See how it runs with nothing synced to it.
If still a problem, it's likely a hardware issue.

Using AppleScript to Launch Excel VBA Macro

Using MS Office 2004 and AppleScript 1.9.3. I want to use AppleScript in MS Entourage to kick off a VBA macro in Excel. But no luck.
To test things, I created an Excel file ("test.xls") with a one-line VBA macro named "test." It just puts up a dialog box with the message "success." I'm calling it from A.S as follows (per the AppleScript Dictionary for Excel 2004):

I get two successive error messages:
1. 'test.xls' cannot be accessed. The file may be read-only or you may be trying to access a read-only location."

"test" file permissions are -rw-r--r-- and it is sitting right on the desktop.
FWIW, I did not remove the old Office vX yet, but renamed old Excel "Microsoft ExcelOld". I read on some other site that this may cause problems.
This has been endlessly frustrating. HELP!!??

Hi Steve,
Have you tried dealing with the return value from your macro? If you are invoking the MsgBox function in your test macro, you may need to allow the return value from MsgBox to pass thru back to AS. Something like :

(Note unless you've changed the hard drive name to "hard drive", the default boot drive name will probably be "Macintosh HD". Case does matter here)
I also suspect you'll need to have Entourage up as well in the full case of running a macro in Entourage from Excel (or the other way around). Hence, the command ActivateMicrosoftApp in the Excel dictionary may also be useful.
Second, you can have a macro, in a startup template, in Entourage call a macro in a startup template in Excel to accomplish what you want without going into AppleScript at all. This latter, VB-only, method will require a "Reference", as it's called in VBA, to be added to the TemplateProject in Entourage that points to the Excel macro you want to fire off. The added benefit of this latter method is that you will have access to the full range of VBA commands/options, rather than the smaller dictionary available in AS.

By design, the iphone will sync itunes content with one computer at a time. Any attempt to sync such content with a second computer will result in ALL itunes content being first erased from your phone & then replaced with the content from the second computer. This is a design feature and cannot be overridden. Because you are using a new computer, your phone will see this computer as a "new" computer. The itunes content sync is one way: computer to phone. If you have photos that were synced to your phone or music ripped on your own that were not backed up, you will first have to extract them from your phone using third party software, before you do anything else, as Apple makes no provision to do so:

Once you've done that, do the following in the order specified:
1. Disable auto sync when an iPod/iPhone is connected under iTunes>Preferences(under the edit menu if using Windows)>Devices in itunes.
2. Make sure you have one contact & one event in the supported applications(Address Book & iCal or Outlook, Windows Address Book) on your computer. These entries can be fake, doesn't matter, the important point is that these programs not be empty.
3. Connect your phone, iTunes running, DO NOT SYNC at this point.
4. Store>Authorize this computer.
5. File>Transfer Purchases(To make sure all purchased content on your phone will be in your itunes library).
6. Right click in the device pane & select reset warnings.
7. Right click again and select backup.
8. Right click again & select restore from backup, select the backup you just made. When prompted to create another backup, decline.
9. This MUST be followed by a sync to restore your itunes content, which you select from the various tabs, You'll get a popup regarding your contacts & calendars asking to merge or replace, select merge.
You should be good to go.

ICal and subscribed calendars with MobileMe using AppleScript

I am having the same problem as many of you; I have a MobileMe account which does not sync the calendars I have in iCal that are subscriptions. I found this great script online which I'll post below. I don't know anything about AppleScript so I'm just copy-pasting. I want it to work, but I'm getting the error "The variable theOldEvent is not defined." right around the line "if similar_found is true then set theOldSummary to the summary of theOldEvent" kinda near the middle. Like I said, I don't know anything about AppleScript. So my question is; how can I fix this error and/or is there some better way of using AppleScript/Automator to do this same thing? Thanks!
