Using cron for a Cinnamon wallpaper slideshow
Hey guys,
I'm trying to use cron to change my wallpaper for Cinnamon but I am having some issues.
The cronjob is:
*/2 * * * * DISPLAY=:0 gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri "file://"$(find /home/bryan/.wallpapers/ -name "*.jpg" -o -name "*.jpeg" -o -name "*.png" -o -name "*.gif" | shuf -n1)
I know it's a doozy, but it should work. The problem is that the wallpaper won't update unless I open up the GUI wallpaper changer for gnome. Does anyone know of any work arounds that could help me out?
try this script with your cron job:

just modify your pictures path and you are good to go.

First time using iDVD for slideshow, need some guidance
I want to make a dvd that consists of 3-6 slideshows, plus "extras". Each slideshow will have 50-150 photos, but the "extras" section I want to have all the photos (including some not used in the slideshows) for a total of about 1300 photos.
1. How do I get the photos not used in the slideshow in the "extras" section?
2. Can I put anything in the "drop zones"? or does everything just go in the "slideshow" section?
This is the first time I have ever used iDVD and could use any help or suggestions at all.....

1. Just create a new extras slideshow menu from the main menu by using the + button and select Add Submenu. Then go there and add slideshows the same way, only select Add Slideshow and then drag your images in; or use the Import funtion.
2. Drop Zones are for single images/movies.
I think you need to spend some time learning how to do this, rather than guessing.

From the description on the developer's website, it appears iFile is a file management application for iOS, used for importing and exporting files between computers (Mac or Windows) and iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod). The closest to an appropriate community here would appear to be Using iPad, or one of the other device-baed communities. I've rquested a transfer of your quetion to that community.

Bought slideshow songs but won't let me use them for that
I bought an album for use with power point presentations but itunes won't let me convert the files so I can use them for the exact purpose I purchased them. I don't want to do anything illegal...just use the songs for the correct purpose.
You'll have to burn a CD of the songs and then reimport them to use them in a program other than iTunes.

Here is the etrecheck report. Any suggestions of some other maintenance I can perform on my computer? A mac tech did a system diagnostic and found nothing wrong with the hardware. I have already reinstalled Mavericks, so it seems like the next step is wiping the harddrive clean and starting over, but I want to avoid that if possible! Can anybody help?

0 B Page-outs1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Cannot open iphoto library, getting a message staing I have to upgrade to see my library which I have done four times with no results. I just had iphoto opened an hour before without a problem and have been using it for weeks before today. Any ideas as to what is going on?
Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
iPhoto 8 (09) and earlier- run the options indicated
iPhoto 9 (11) and later- run Option #4 to rebuild the database
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager (iPhoto 8 or earlier or IPhoto 11 and later) and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the
File ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 8 or earlier)
or
Library ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 9 or later)
menu option to rebuild the library.
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

I have several questions. iPhoto does not meet my needs. I would use lightroom mainly for organization and downloading photos from my camera cards. My cameras are Sony disc-hx200v and a little Kodak I will need to know if they are fine with light room. Also I use pixelmator for photo editing and likely will use iskysoft dvd maker for mac to create my dvds once edited. I am desperate to find a way to make my work flow work. i.e. I need to get photos somewhere on my mac, in this case it would be lightroom then I need to edit them in lightroom and pixelmator, then be able to get that album/slideshow/folder whatever you call it Into the dvd maker to voiceover and finish the project. It looks like aperture would have been more to my taste but they are
also taking that away. Yeah! Go Apple. About all I will have left of use is an operating system and mail. Will appreciate any help. I am 73 and doing dvd's for Amazon so I really can't afford any more programs that are snatched away and learning curves that change every 6 months.Are you shooting in raw or jpeg?
I’m not sure there is raw support for your Sony model and you don’t say which Kodak you have. But for jpegs Lightroom will normally work.
For your existing photos it would usually be necessary to export versions to the desktop or create new folders in Finder. Those duplicates will contain the editing adjustments you have already made and can be imported into Lightroom using “Add” in the import dialog.
I would suggest you download Lightroom and use it free for 30 days. You can then test it to ensure it meets your needs. You can download from this link:

Configuring cronie for mailing output [solved]

I am having a hard time setting up cronie for mailing output. Jump to the last sentence for the actual question.
From man 8 cron, I read that the -m option "allows you to specify a shell command to use for sending Cron mail output instead of using sendmail(8). This command must accept a fully formatted mail message (with headers) on standard input and send it as a mail message to the recipients specified in the mail headers". I do have msmtp installed. I can do this and receive email successfully:
$ msmtp -t << eof
> To: <my address>@gmail.com
>
> test
> eof
Thus I know that msmtp -t is the command I must provide with the -m option.
Then, I followed these instructions and created /etc/systemd/system/cronie.service.d/mailing.conf which contains:

Note: the first, empty ExecStart cancels the former one from the original .service file.
After starting cronie.service, this is the result of systemctl status cronie.service:

It seems that systemd drops the single quotes and takes -t as it's own parameter instead of passing it to msmtp. You can also see that crond logged "Syslog will be used instead of sendmail". I can actually see the output of my commands in /var/log/crond.log. How should I quote the space between msmtp and -t in the ExecStart line of my .service file?

It seems unnecessary. The MAILTO variable set in the crontab accepts a complete email address.

I created an album in iPhoto 11 and I have placed photos in a certain order for her graduation party slideshow. I want to place that album or photos on a thumbdrive, but when I do I lose the order I placed them in the folder. renamed the photos starting with 1 and ending 262. thinking that would save the photos in order. Each time I try to export them that are placed in original folder names and descriptions need help.
This is a two part process. First we title the photos, then we export them, using the title as filename.
To title them
Once you have then in the order you want select them all and go
Photos -> Batch Change. Select set 'Title' to 'Text'
Choose a Title -> Graduation 2013 or whatever, then check the box at 'Append number to each photo.
Now, in the Album all your photos are named... Graduation 001, 002, 003 etc
Next Export them:
File -> Export, and in the Name option, choose 'Title as Filename' and complete the export.

Using cron to stop and restart password protected instance (App Server 7)
I have been asked by a customer to create a cron job to stop and restart their web application running under Applications server 7.
I have created the script and can stop the instance, but I am unable to start it as it is asking for a password.
I have included this in the script but it doesn't seem to like having a password supplied this way.
Am I doing something wrong or Are there any alternative ways of stopping and restarting an application, using Cron?Have you looked at using password.conf file as described in --

Database Tier on a Two Node Oracle Database 10g R2 RAC
Application Tier on Two Node using Shared APPL_TOP with Load Balancer.
They want to implement DR site using Oracle Data Guard (RAC to Non-RAC).
I was referring to Note: 452056.1 +( Business Continuity for Oracle Applications Release 12 on Database Release 10gR2 - Single Instance and RAC )+.
In this note its mentioned that:

For example, set up an rsync job similar to the below example in cron, to run every few minutes.
Can we use rsync for Production systems without any issues? Customer is concerned about using freeware on their Production systems.

Question for Mac users re: slideshows
I am new to Mac and have used PSE for PC for years. I used to be able to create a slideshow directly from PSE and add music, etc, but I no longer see that ability on PSE for Mac. Can anyone direct me on how to create a slideshow with a soundtrack? Do I have to use iDVD?

From what I have read from people who are familiar - comparing Premiere Elements and Final Cut Express would be a better comparison. (Yes, I know that PRE costs about $85-100 and you said that FCE is about $200.) So the following comments exclude the capabilities of Premiere Elements.
Also it seems that you and I have very different opinions about the PSE slide show. Despite the fact that I spend time attempting to help people survive making a slide show using the PSE slide show editor, I would never claim that it is anything but LIMITED and BASIC. I would not recommend that someone make a decision about Photoshop Elements based on its slide show capabilities.
Perhaps the PSE panning and zooming is better or easier - but even it is limited in control. For audio and transitions, they are a constant source of complaint on these forums and others about how limited they are and when they don't work. For example, mixing music and narration does not work in PSE 6 or 7: timing of any audio in recent versions has been very imprecise (I think it was PSE 4 where there was last some more precise timing control for music/audio) -

but when this crontab job runs export is not performed and i can't file the export dump file and logile.
test.log file is getting created with nothing in it.
Can any one let me know what is wrong with the shell script.
