Using Dreamweaver Templates

I'm trying to set up a portion of our site using Dreamweaver
CS3 so that I can allow others to edit it with Contribute. I've
created and applied the template to the pages. One of the things
that needs to be included in the template is a virtual include,
i.e. <!--#include virtual="../../quicksearch.html" -->. For
some reason, it will look fine in the template, but when I update
the pages, it changes it to an absolute link to the C drive, i.e.
<!--#include
virtual="file:///C|/apachepages/admin/quicksearch.html" -->.
Tried changing it to use the actual url, i.e. <!--#include
virtual="
http://www.vims.edu/quicksearch.html"
-->. This returns an error in the page when it is viewed, i.e.
[an error occurred while processing this directive].
How do I fix this so that it works?! Is this a bug or am I
doing something wrong? Are there other ways to do this that I am
not thinking of? Any help figuring this out is appreciated.

By the way, that is improper syntax for a virtual include. It
would have to
be -
<!--#include virtual="/quicksearch.html" -->
(assuming this is the correct root relative path)

    Hi,

Looking at your page code I can only see <h4> heading tags, no <h1> or <h2><h3> etc. Googles spider will look at the text between each html tag and access it for importance, <h1> being the highest ranked, <h2> the next and so on.
It's important for SEO that you use 'buzz words' between the tags which Google considers  the most applicable when it comes to look through your site to give your site every opportunity to be ranked higher.
So you might find that inserting 'Onlne Java Tuition' between a <h1> tag to be beneficial.
I would also insert the following between a <h2> tag as a kind of sub-header to the <h1>tag.
'Personal Online Java Tutor, Java J2ee Project Based Training by 8 Yrs Experienced Software Engineer. Get Practical Online Training in Java J2ee Jsp Servlets Jdbc J2ee Struts Hibernate Spring Ejb Ajax and other Frameworks.'
Obviously the 'buzz words' for your site are Java Online Tuition/Training so make sure you have quite a few of those integrated into the text on the page and perhaps the images alt tags as well.
Of course it is also important to try and get listed on as many associated sites/forums as posssibe as Google looks for back-links to your site. If it finds some on sites/forums which are already highly ranked then that too can help in the ranking.
It's a bit hit and miss though. Sometimes you can implement all of the above and virtually nothing will happen and at other times you can see some really very good results. I recently got a site ranked at no 2 in Google for a couple of generic buzz words which I never expected Google to bite on given that they were quite common to a lot of other websites in competition.
It's a lot easier if you have a catchment 'location' area which you are aiming at. For instance 'Hat Makers London' will stand a better chance than simply 'Hat Makers'.
    Good luck.

  • NEW! Free Dreamweaver templates WITH Fireworks vector files

I just released some free Dreamweaver templates that include
not only the Dreamweaver template dwt file, but also the original
pre-sliced Fireworks file with all the template graphics.
The templates include the dwt, Fireworks file, pure CSS
menus, are AdSense-ready, XHTML 1.0 valid and are very customizable
through both the Fireworks file and the CSS.
If you use one, let me know so I can get a screenshot and
post a link to your site showing how the templates have been
    customized by various designers.
    Cheers!

  • Dreamweaver Templates and Include files

    Hi,
I am using dreamweaver templates so that my users can create
new pages on our Intranet using Contribute.
When I create a template and try and use an inculde file for
the menu systems I get an error. I am trying to use the following
code to inculde the asp file:
    <!--#include file="/includes/menu.asp" -->
And I get the following error when saving the template:
    Unbalanced body tag
I have checked and I definetly have opening and closing body
tags in the HTML. So I am wondering whether the error is caused by
the fact that the file is a dwt and not as asp.
So, is there anyway of using include files in a dreamweaver
    template?
Thanks in advance for any help.

That's the wrong syntax for a file include. It should be
    either of these -
    <!--#include virtual="/includes/menu.asp" -->
    or
    <!--#include file="includes/menu.asp" -->

  • Dreamweaver template to update file other than html?

    Hi,
I am using Dreamweaver CS4 to manage my website.
The problem is i cannot get Dreamweaver to update my .tpl (php template)
    Any idea?
    Thanks

    Thanks,
I finally figure it out how to get if fix.
May be i should say it clear, i use dreamweaver template which is a dwt file to update all html pages in my website.
But some of the file i use which is tpl extension (the same as html file but with template variables). The dreamweaver
did not recognize it. The page did not show up when i make changes in dwt file.
Then what i do is change the "configuration" > "DocumentTypes", so that dreamweaver recognize tpl as a type of html file.
After that i change extension.txt file also. Rebuild site cache. And now its done.

  • Dreamweaver Template files not updating other files

I took over a website and the site uses Dreamweaver Templates.  I'm not too familiar with the way that Templates works.  Anyway, the nav (links at bottom of website) need to be updated.  I updated the secondary.dwt file within the Templates folder.  I uploaded it, but it's not updating the pages on the website that use this template file.  Please help!

When you update the template from within DW, you should get a dialog asking if you want to update all of the files that use the template. When you click "OK" everything is updated across the site.
If you updated the template outside of the defined site, it won't update anything and you may have a bit of work on your hands.
In DW, you should have a Files tab with a drop down menu. The drop down menu should have all of your defined sites. Choose the site you are working on and a list of the files in that site will appear. Choose the template and make your changes and it will ask if you want to update everything else.

  • Existing Dreamweaver templates on Joomla website

    Hello,
I created a website using Dreamweaver templates for my client. The department website I created uses Dreamweaver (CS3) and the rest of the departments websites are using Joomla (I was told this after the fact). My questions are:
    1.     Will this create a problem or conflict?  I was thinking I could upload my Templates and department folder directly using my FTP program.
    2.     I noticed there already is a "templates" folder with some folders and an index.html file. So, if I upload my files, will my files conflict because mine refer to "Templates" and the root folder is called "templates".
Any help on how to handle this would greatly be appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • Dreamweaver templates not updating *.php file

    Hello everyone,
I have been given an exisiting website to update that uses
    Dreamweaver templates.
I have made the changes successfully within the content.dwt
file, saved it, and then uploaded both the new content.dwt file and
the related *.htm pages that were linked to it.
After going to the website to double check the new pages I
found a *.php file that uses the same template, content.dwt, but it
never asked to update that particular file.
So, I opened the *.php file in Dreamweaver and tried to apply
changes from the content.dwt file to it using: Templates - Update
current page, but no such luck. Since there is no code at the start
of this file like the other *.htm files how do I "connect" it with
the newly updated template. I tried making a small change on the
content.dwt file so see what files would come up in the "do you
wish to update..." list but for some reason the *.php file is not
    there.
Perhaps the answer is fairly obvious to someone who has
worked with Templates a lot but since I have just started working
with templates I still have a large knowledge gap in this area.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Many thanks

  • Migrating from legacy site / dreamweaver templates

We are going to migrate to the weblogic portal content management over the next few months - we have thousands of pages on our old site that were created using dreamweaver templates.
Is there a way to automate the migration - to import the old html files? I could use the dreamweaver template to strip out the old design. But then how would I import it? What have other users done when migrating from an old static site to a content management system?

You can use bulk loader utility of WLP. Please see the link http://edocs.bea.com/wlp/docs102/cm/bulkloader.html

  • Who really uses Dreamweaver?

I have been a long time user of Dreamweaver and I am really pleased with CS4 and the new abilities to keep track of linked files etc.
However, I have noticed that almost none of the other sites I visit seem to be built using Dreamweaver. I frequently scour other sites for design and technical ideas but very very rarely see evidence of Dreamweaver having been used - eg. I don't think I have ever seen a commercial site that uses Dreamweaver templates. I understand that a lot of sites these days are based on content management systems, but among the static sites that are out there I almost never find sites that appear to have been designed using dreamweaver.
So my question is, does anyone really use Dreamweaver for commercial , production sites and what features (eg. Templates, Spry, ICE) do they use?

    richardhellyer wrote:

I do, but I almost never use any of its extended features. I edit my stylesheets in TopStyle when I'm on my PC, because it's easier to navigate and more intuitive than DW's CSS stuff and I clean up messy code in Smultron (Mac) or Textpad (PC), if and when DW's search features are too slow or it refuses to acknowledge some stuff and conks out. The Spry stuff is okay, but I have not yet found an excuse to use it and a lot of other JavaScript code can be found on the web, so one is not too dependent on Spry and the Behaviors panel. The rest of the time DW is just fine and compared to other HTML editors it's surely the most complete package. The only real problem I have, is its rigid approach to dealing with dynamic content. This includes the aforementioned Behaviors panel and naturally, the program being unable to deal even with common CMS systems beyond the likewise rigid Databases panel, is not really helping when working on nested PHP documents and such. You know, empty data regions that are completely meaningless when empty and similar things... It really needs to have a way to connect woith PHP/ CFM/ JSP(A)/ ASP that extends LiveView.

  • Using flash template in dreamweaver

    Hi,
I am new to dream weaver. JUST NEED A QUICK HINT.
I used a flash template which was available free online to
make my own website - I am using dreamweaver to publish my website
using the flash template i just finished filling out - used a layer
in dream weaver and put .swf file in it (the main file)
I also uploaded the dependent files on web.
When I preview my page in browser it plays the main file
correctly but does not automatically access other files
    Problem:
when I play the main 24.swf file in flash - it automatically
accesses different dependent files and plays the files as I want it
to - also plays different page files - but the same file when put
in dreamweaver only plays the intro and then stops and does not
    play different page files.
    Actual files:
24.swf - is the main page file - when I play this in flash -
it plays intro, contact tab (when clicked), my projects (when
clicked), work experience (when clicked), everything.
I edited different page files my projects (24.1), contact tab
(24.2), work experience (24.3) individually using their .fla files
but still when I update information in this files and save them the
24.swf file automatically picks up the update BUT when I use the
same file in dream weaver for publishing my website, it only goes
till the intro and then stops and shows no view for those 24.1 24.2
    24.3 files.
24.fla plays the intro but 24.swf plays everything, I didnt
know it would take me so much time to do a simple upload like this.
I have been working on this problem since last 3 days and
night but need some help now, I got to finish this up by tomorrow
    night.
Please help me, I am going crazy because I am a second away
from the whole website but it doesnt show anything right now.
    Please please help.
If my explanation doesnt sound clear, please for god sake let
    me know.
    thank you very much

If I import the site from my portal, I don't get the option of a free site - when I try to upgrade, I get the credit card form asking for payment.
I feel like I'm running around in circles with one foot nailed to the floor.
    Any tips?

Thank you for your quick reply and for clearing up my confusion.  I'm exporting the first section now.  I choose the smallest size, 3x4 but I'd prefer to go higher as this DVD was originally a VHS home movie.  I'm wondering if after three conversions (VHS,->DVD->MPEG) the resolution will be so poor as to not support a larger size frame?  If it can, what size should I select when I export?
