Using external AS3 classes in a FlasCC SWC

I am building a Flascc SWC, which is to be used in a regular Flash swf, build in FlashBuilder 4.6.
I have managed to build an API that uses regular built-in types, like Number, uint.  However, when I try to pass in or out a class type of my own creation, I had build problems building my swf.
I figured it out, and I thought I would share it.  Perhaps Adobe could include this example in a blog, or in the next set of SWC samples, so that people know how to do this.
File Bob.as
package me {
     public class Bob {
          private var _x : int;
          public function Bob() {}
          public function set x( val:int ) : void {
               _x = val;
          public function get x():int {
               return _x;
2) Compile in FlashBuilder to Bob.swc
3) Create Library.cpp
#include <AS3/AS3.h>
#include <AS3/AS3++.h>
using namespace AS3::local;
var impl_make_Bob( int count )
     var ns = internal::new_Namespace("me", 35);
     var className = internal::new_String("Bob");
     var cc = internal::getlex(ns, className);
     var bob = internal::construct(cc);
     var xProperty = internal::new_String("x");
     var newX = internal::new_int( count );
     internal::setproperty(bob, xProperty, newX);
     return bob;
void thunk_makeBob() __attribute__((used,
     annotate("as3import:me.Bob"),
     annotate("as3sig:public function thunk_makeBob(count:int):Bob"),
     annotate("as3package:me.SWCLibrary")));
void thunk_makeBob() {
     int local_count;
     AS3_GetScalarFromVar(local_count, count);
     var retVal = impl_makeBob(local_count);
     AS3_DeclareVar(as3Val,Bob);
     AS3_CopyVarxxToVar(as3Val, retVal);
     AS3_ReturnAS3Var(as3Val);
int main() {
     AS3GoAsync();
4) Use FlasCC to Compile the Library.cpp to SWCLibrary.swc (me.SWCLibrary)
#Using the same environment as the FlasCC_1.0.0 samples, compile with a Makefile,
T01: check
     "$(FLASCC)/usr/bin/g++" $(BASE_CFLAGS) \
          -fllvm-llc-opt=-ascopt=-le -fllvm-llc-opt=-ascopt=E:/myProject/myLibrary/Bob.swc \
          -O4 Library.cpp -emit-swc=me.SWCLibrary -o SWCLibrary.swc -lFlash++ -lAS3++
include ../Makefile.common
clean:
     rm -f SWCLibrary.swc *.bc *.abc *.exe
5) Create a new Wrapper.swc that embeds (merges) Bob.swc and SWCLibrary.swc , in FlashBuilder
package me{
     public class WrapperFlascc {
          import me.SWCLibrary.CModule;
               me.SWCLibrary.CModule.startAsync(null);
          import me.Bob;
          public static function makeBob( count : int ) : Bob {
               return me.SWCLibrary.thunk_makeBob(count);
NOTE: It may not be best to embed Bob.swc , if Bob.swc had classes that aren't referenced by Wrapper.swc or SWCLibrary.swc .  They could be lost.  Instead, link it in the final swf.
This Wrapper.swc can then be used as normal in a FlashBuilder project.  I am not creating a C++ app, but rather using flasCC as an alchemy replacement.
Perhaps there was a better way?  Anyway, I hope this helps someone.

Shortly after I posted my question, I realized I had to check "Export for runtime sharing" for each object.

  • Debugging in "strict mode" while using external library assets

    Hi everyone. A new ActionScript-3 user here with a question on strict mode.
       I have multiple Flash pages which use the same art assets. To support modularity and possibly decrease total download time, I have implemented this by placing the shared assets into the library of a shared .swf file (the other .swf files all load this shared .swf file). The shared .swf contains ActionScript routines to place instances of the assets onto the stage and to perform other common functionality.
       A drawback to this strategy is that, correct me if I'm wrong, "strict mode" can not be used to debug calls to functions which exist in external .swf files. That is, if the parent .swf makes a call to a function which is defined within an externally loaded .swf, that function call will be reported as an error in strict-mode because Flash is unaware of the contents of an external .swf at compile time (though it is aware at run-time.)
       My understanding is that shared code can be compiled under strict-mode if the shared code exists purely as an external .as file, not as an external .swf file. However, again please correct me if I'm wrong, art assets which are shared at run-time must exist in an external .swf file. Therefore, by my understanding, if run-time shared assets are desired, then strict mode will not properly compile the projects.
       Is my understanding correct?
       Thanks for any help,
         - Rashid

          Posting an update.
          I have since found a way to compile in strict mode a project which loads an external .swf and acesses its functions. This external swf is able to have a library of its own which is accessed in the external swf's own ActionScript.
          Unfortunately, the solution I have found increases the size of the project's compiled swf. If anyone knows of a way to solve this problem without increasing swf size, I would be quite grateful if you were to share your knowledge.
          Posted below is the solution I am aware of, which increases file size. In these steps, “main project” refers to the top-level Flash project which is attempting to load other swf's. “External project” refers to an swf which is to be loaded by the main project.
    1) Publish the external projects as swc files. “Swc” is a class file, and is to be accessed by the main project when debugging under strict mode. The .swc presumably contains information about external project's library items which are to be exported for ActionScript.
          To create an .swc file, head to “File->Publish Settings...->Flash”. Check the “Export SWC” box.
    2) In the main project, add the external projects' .swc files to the external library path. This is found in, “File->Publish Settings...->Flash->Settings->External library path”. Either individual swc files can be added here (via the SWC file button) or the name of the directory where they reside (via the Path button). Both approaches should work.
    3) Somewhere in the main project's ActionScript, the external project is likely being loaded via a line of code similar to myLoaderObject.load( myURLRequest ). For this new approach, it is now necessary to make use of the second parameter to load(), the loader context. Here's the new line of code:
    myLoaderObject.load( myURLRequest, new LoaderContext( false, ApplicationDomain.currentDomain ) );
          If the LoaderContext parameter is NOT passed, then Flash unfortunately shall not report this as an error. Instead, you may observe strange behavior when the external swf attempts to use its exported library items.
    4) If the main project's code refers to the external project's class by name, then that class will need to be “import”ed into the main project's code. Without this, the compiler will complain about not recognizing the class.
    5) In the main project, edit  “File->Publish Settings...->Flash->Settings->Source path”.  Add the path to the external project's .as class file. Without this, the main project shall give a run-time error of not being able to find the external class.
       This final step, 5, is what increases the size of the main project's swf. I have a project with a few nested .swf loads, and the main project's swf increased by about 10Kb when using this solution.
          This does not seem proper. That is, one would desire the sizes of the final swf's to remain unchanged regardless of the level of compile-time error reporting. If my interpretation of an .swc class file is correct, then it seems logical to presume that step 5 above should not even be necessary, because the class information is given to the compiler/debugger through the .swc.
       Anyone know what I am doing wrong, or otherwise how to get around this problem?
       Thanks bunches.

  • Image-to-Image Fade Using External Files

    Hi all,
    I'm trying to create a fairly basic random image-to-image fader.  I've got a LOT of images that need to rotate through and they've all been optimized, however the swf file just becomes too big w/all of them.
    So what I was hoping I could do was use AS3 to load up a random jpg from an XML file, apply the fade effect, preload the next one it's planning on grabbing while the current one is being displayed, and repeat the process indefinitely.  By doing this I'm hoping to keep the footprint of the application extremely small.
    Is such a thing possible (I'm using a trial of CS5 at the moment) and if so, can someone point me in the right direction?  I'm pretty new to AS3 so any amount of help would be greatly appreciated!

    Yes, it is possible to do.  You can probably search Google using terms like "AS3 XML slideshow tutorial" to get the whole thing in one package.  Though what you might want to do is take it in steps so that you can come to understand how each aspect works.
    The basic elements would involve loading an XML formatted bit of data into an array and using the Loader class to load the images, using a COMPLETE event listener so that you know when an image is loaded and ready to be processed into an object within the show.
    Then you would want to look into using some actionscript tweening to get the alpha fading effect working for you.  Flash has its own Tween class, and there are thrid party tween classes as well. I'd say use the Flash version first just to eliminate one level of complication for now (installing and using an external class). Many people recommend the thrid party tweening classes over Flash's.
    You might also want to incorporate some form of Timer (the Timer class) to help manage when things change and/or when they load. If you have optimized your images already, then it would take less time for them to load, which means you probably do not want to use loading status to control the timing, but only as logic to enable timed actions.

  • Tracking Memory usage on iOS using the Stats class

    I've been checking memory usage on an app I'm developing for iOS using the Stats class https://github.com/mrdoob/Hi-ReS-Stats ( http://help.adobe.com/en_US/as3/mobile/WS4bebcd66a74275c3-315cd077124319488fd-7fff.html#WS 948100b6829bd5a61637f0a412623fd0543-8000).
    I added the Stats class to my project and redeployed and, yikes, memory usage reported in Stats creeps up (pretty slowly) even when there's nothing happening in the app (just showing a loaded bitmap).
    To try and track down the issue I created a project with a test class that extends Sprite with just this single call in the constructor :-
    addChild( new Stats() );
    I deployed it to the device to check that it didn't gobble any memory.
    But I was Suprised to watch the memory usage creep up and up (to approx 5) before some garbage collection kicked in and takes memory back down. I left it running and then it crept up again to over 7.5 this time before being kicked back down to just below 3.
    So 2 related questions that I'd appreciate any feedback/observations/thoughts on :-
    1 - Is this normal (i.e. memory creeping up when there's nothing other than Stats in the project) ?
    2 - What is the best way to monitor memory usage within an app ? Is Stats good enough - is Stats itself causing the memory usage ?
    All the best guys !

    Also see thread (http://forums.adobe.com/message/4280020#4280020)
    My conclusions are :-
    - If you run an app and leave it idle, memory usage gradually creeps up (presumably as memory is being used to perform calcs/refresh the display etc)
    - Periodically the garbage collection kicks in and memory is brought back down
    - This cycle could be in excess of 5 mins
    Run with your real app and memory will increase and be released much more rapidly/regularly.
    - It's probably worth performing initial checks by running on your desktop to iron out any initial problems

  • Using external libraries in Web Dynpro DCs

    Hi,
    I've followed the example in the following blog for using external libraries in my Web Dynpro (WD) DCs:
    /people/valery.silaev/blog/2005/09/14/a-bit-of-impractical-scripting-for-web-dynpro and some other messages in the forums. However, it isn't working exactly as described in the blog. I have to twist it a bit to get it work. I were wondering if anyone has any better solution for this problem?
    The senario is like this:
    - External libraries: a.jar, b.jar
    - WD DCs: wd1, wd2 in that wd1 and wd2 are both using external libraries a.jar and b.jar; wd1 is a library DC that can be reused in wd2.
    According to the example in the blog, the following steps are carried out:
    - Step 1. Create an external library DC, add a.jar and b.jar to public part "ExternalLibs" as described in the blog.
    - Step 2: Create, build, deploy “J2EE Server / Library” DC. (Add reference to the public part of the external library DC as a used DC, with both Build-time and Run-time dependency).
    - Step 3: Create WD DC wd1, add used DCs and WD reference libraries as described in the blog. Add WD components as public part. Build and deploy WD DC wd1.
    All are ok so far!
    - Step 4: Create WD DC wd2, add used DCs and WD reference libraries as before. Try to build and FAIL!
    The error occurs here because wd2 cannot access to the classes in the external libraries, similar to the problems described in thread Re: Problems with deploying a JAR file.
    I've found a workaround, although quite tedious and cumbersom, but it works. My solution so far is:
    - Round 1: Perform those 4 steps above, but in step 1, after adding the jars to the public part "ExternalLibs", set the property of the public part "purpose" to "compilation", then build and deploy all other DCs accordingly.
    - Round 2: Change the public part "ExternalLibs" property to "assembly", then bulid and deploy all other DCs again.
    And now I can reuse the external libraries in my WD DCs as well as WD DCs as library in other WD DCs.
    I know it's not an elegant solution. So I were wondering if the experts out there can help me with better solutions?
    Many thanks in advance for your help.

    Van

  • Target movieclip from an AS3 class file - remove/add Child

    Halo.
    I have a very simple question  (for those who use external class files).
    Assuming that I have a MovieClip manually added to Stage and I want to access it from inside my class definiton.
    So the code would be:
    MovieClip(root).MyMovieClip
    But I can't figure out how to use remove/add Child in that kind of situation.
    I will appreciate any advice.
    Thanks

    if you can reference using that, you can remove using:
    MovieClip(root).MyMovieClip.parent.removeChild(MovieClip(root).MyMovieClip);
    and you can add to any displayobjectcontainer.

  • How to use my as3 file in flex

    hi, I am new in flex and want to divert into flex. How to  use my as3 file into flex. Is there any sample tutor . so, that I could learn fast.

    Please clarify. Is this .as file a class you previously used as a complonentcomponent you now wish to use as the main application?
    If the .as file just has variables and functions you wish to access from your Flex app, use:
    include "subfolder1/subfolder2/etc/MyASFile.as";
    If you want to use classes from the file, do this:
    import subfolder1.subfolder2.etc.MyClassName;

  • I want to call External Java class from the PL/SQL

    Hi,
    I am using Oracle Apps R11i (11.5.7), I wanted to call external Java class from the PL/SQL. This external Java class is residing in another application server.
    How do I do this.
    I know one way. Develop C routine in Oracle Apps to call external java class and call this C routine from the PL/SQL.
    Is there any simple method available? or any other method?
    Thanks in advance.
    -Venkat

    First of all, this is a Java application you're talking about, right (i.e. it has a main() function)? It's not just a class that you're trying to instantiate is it? If it's an application, you obviously have to start a new virtual machine to run it (rather than using the virtual machine built into the database like stored java). I'm a little leary of your mention of an "application server" as this would more commonly mean that a virtual machine is already over there running with access to this class. In which case, you'd typically interface with SOAP or some other RPC API.
    All that aside, as long as you have physical disc access (through NFS or whatever) to the class file, you could use a java wrapper class with a system call to do this. In fact, there is a thread in just the last day or so on this very forum that has the code to do just that (see " Invoking OS Commands from PL/SQL"). However, it's worth noting that the virtual machine will be running on the database server in this case and not the application server.

  • How to use external Java API in Java Embedd inside BPEL

    How to use external classes inside the BPEL in Java Embed Activity ? Any sample code availble ? Like i want to use log4j API inside BPEL.

    No you dont have to change your startManagedServer.cmd/.sh everytime you need to have a Java Embedding activity. You only need it in case of using Log4J. As log4j requires a configuration xml viz log4j.debug.xml and log4j.dtd you need to let the soa managed server know about it. The best way to load this configuration files is using the JAVA_OPTIONS command during server startup.
    Hope the explanation helps.

  • Use external libraries in web dynpro java

    Dear Experts,
    I need to add an external library to my project.
    Anyway, I do not know how to do it because it gives me many problems.
    I tried modifying the classpath and placing it in the lib folder of the project from "Navigator".
    Also project properties, add. jar outside, and throws me the following error:
    [javac] Compiling 213 source files to D:\WORK\WORKSPACE\7.2.jdi\LocalDevelopment\t\2BF09F48E6D0E2C201262098A0E4D79F\classes

         [javac] ERROR: import com.estaf.jpay;
         [javac] ERROR:
    Given these errors, I know my includes without problems and I can instantiate objects from library classes, but these errors I can not deploy.
    I read the following link:
    /people/raphael.vogel/blog/2008/05/05/how-to-use-external-libraries-in-the-sap-component-model-part-ii
    I did everything the tutorial. I created the external library. I can see in my project "DC-Definition -> Used DCs" The public parts assembly and compilation. Now the problem is that it still does not recognize the classes of the libraries you want to use.
    A level of code, when I try to instantiate the class does not recognize me. What could be missing? I did a couple of times step by step and gives me the same results.
    I use SAP NetWeaver Developer Studio SAP NetWeaver 7.2 SP03 PAT0007 version.
    Infinitely appreciate any help. Thank you very much.

  • Calling PL/SQL function from external Java class

    I was wondering if I was able to call a pl/sql function from an external java class? If so, would you be able to tell me briefly on how to go about it. I know I can call java methods that are internally stored in the db from pl/sql, but I was hoping I could call pl/sql from external java. Thanks,

  • How to use External Routing in Human Task

    Hi,
    Could you please help me knowing how to create External Routing in Human Task in SOA Composite.
    Thanks

    When defining the external routing class in the .task, you can define the name value pairs which you want to pass to the program. Here you can pass dynamic values to the class as well by reading the appropiate node from the payload. In your class the name, value would be available in the "Map propertyBag" parameters in Rajiv's example link.
    Document says:
    Map of properties — When an assignment service is specified, a list of properties can also be specified to correlate callbacks with backend services that determine the task assignees.Or if you are too lazy to map many parameters and values, you can always read the whole Task task and then use getDocument and some xml reading to determine the values. This Task is the whole document.
    API:
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17904_01/apirefs.1111/e10660/oracle/bpel/services/workflow/task/model/TaskType.html#getDocument__Document says:
    Task document — The task document that is executed by the workflow. The task document contains the payload and other task information like current state, and so on.Also you need to make sure that you are maintaining the state of the assignment class, doc says:
    The assignment service class cannot be stateful because every time workflow services need to call the assignment service, it creates a new instance.Thus if you are doing multiple serial assignments one after the another and if your server restarts in between, then the approval would start at the first assignee again. Suppose in Rajiv's doc link e.g., if the task is assigned to 'wfaulk' and the server restarts then the task would be assigned back to 'jstein'. In order to prevent this you need to modify the java code and each time the variable changes it's value you need to place it in a dehydration store. Also on each action over the process you need to reinitialize the variable from that dehydration store.

  • I want to access that BEA instance variable inside of a external java class

    Hi,
    This is N.pradeep. I am a java programmer, and I am new to BEA AquaLogic BPM studio5.7. I have a question regarding how to retrieve an instance variable of BEA Aqua Logic to an external Java Program. i.e. I want to access that BEA instance variable inside of a external java class, and vice versa.

    You can use PAPI or PAPI-WS for accessing BPM instance variable from a Java code, thougt I am not sure how the reverse will be done. Assuming that you are aware aof PAPI-WS and have created the necessary stubs out of the PAPI-WS WSDL using Axis, you can access instance variables using the API's or operations defined therein.
    Thanks and Regards
