Using Ipod on up to 5 computers

I have owned my Ipod for about 2 1/2 year so I believe the forums is my only option for getting help with this issue. I use my Ipod on my desktop and my laptop. I recently suffered a crash with my desktop so when I installed a new drive and reinstalled Itunes I used up my third slot. While setting up my wireless network and moving files around to share them I discovered now I am about to use up my fourth slot. Is there any way to prove to Apple what is happening so if something like this happens once more before I have to eventually get a new Ipod I will not have used up 5 of my slots on 2 machines? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated as I don't think I can contact Apple on this issue. Thanks.
TJ

This is not an issue with the number of iPods. You can sync as many iPods as you want to your library. The "5" limit is the number of authorized systems to play any iTunes store purchases. This link will explain what you need to do to deauthorize everything, then simply re-suthorize the systems you are using. If possible, you need to remember to de-authorize any computer prior to getting rid of it, or doing any major repairs on it, so 1 machine is not using multiple authorizations. Hope this helps.
So sorry, wrong link!

  • Using iPod on Two Windows Based Computers?

I use one Windows XP OS computer at home and another on-the-road. I have iTunes running on the home computer. I want to run iTunes on the other notebook computer so I can sync and put new "files" on my iPod (30Gb Video) when I'm on-the-road.
How can I do this so as not to lose any files on the iPod when changing computers?

If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply.

  • Using Ipod between work and home computers

I recently got an Ipod and a new laptop. I synced it with my computer at work to put all the music on the Ipod, and now I'd like to set up my Ipod on my new home computer. When I open ITunes, it says something about resetting the ipod to use this library (on my home computer). I don't want to lose all the info on my ipod.
Is there a way to use both my work computer and my personal computer and set them both up for my Ipod?

If you have Windows, your best bet is either using the 14-day trial of CopyPod or trying PodPlayer. I have heard good things about the latter, so I would just try CopyPod then delete/uninstall it when you are finished. For Macs, Senuti is the best.

  • Use  ipod in two computers,  at home and office?

I would like to listen and download songs using both computers, at home and office. Is it possible? How do I do it?

You should format your ipod for your home computer, or whichever machine you're going to want to dump your music onto when you want a cange of pace. You can set your ipod to manual as described above, and that way you will still be able to get files off your computer at work (mac) but will not be able to update ipod software, or take files off the ipod and put them onto the mac. ipod will not "reject" being plugged into a mac once it's been formatted for windows, it just wont be compatible for updates, and if it's configured from the home computer to recieve ANY automatic updates, you may experience problems. There are a couple good third party programs out there, built mainly for recovering itunes library from ipods when a user changes computers, but I wouldnt reccomend using them to maintain identical itunes libraries at home and at the office. You can find what you are looking for by just searching for the action you want the program to perform.

  • Is there a way to use ipod with new computer without erasing entire library

I'm not really tech-savvy, but I'm tossing my old computer and getting a new one - is there a way to use my ipod on my new computer without erasing my existing library? It won't let me make changes to my ipod and wants me to erase everything that is on there right now - HELP!

Connect your iPod to your computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in iTunes enable it for disk use, this is required for most if not all the utilities listed below so they can access the files: Using your iPod as a storage drive
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

    iDump Windows Only
    iRepo Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Can i use two different itunes and/or computers to download?

i just got a new ipod, downloaded a couple cd's from my friend's comp/itunes and when i tried using my itunes it automatically deleted the songs i had previously downloaded. is there any way to prevent this? can i only use one computer or itunes account every time i want to download anything?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The reason iTunes does this is because it is illegal to use your friend's music.

  • My main computer broke, can i use one of the 5 authorize computers to purchase and download songs

My main computer broke, and I want to know if I can still purchase and download songs to my apple devices using one of my five authorize computers? It is my wife's computer and she also uses itunes. Can I log her off and use my log-in?

Thanks for your reply, Niel. Basically, I can log in into my wife's computer, log in and download new music I purchased or from a CD into my ipad/iphone/ipod with out a problem since is one of my 5 authorize computers? Sorry for being so inquisitive but I'm not the best when it comes to itunes.
Will all my music load into itunes if once I sign in? or will it just load the songs I've downloaded from the itunes store?
    Many Thanks!

  • Syncing/Using iPod on both Mac Leopard and Windows Vista.

I can't use my iPod on Vista without restoring the firmware to work with windows, and subsequently losing all the songs on it! Is there anyway round this? Basically this means that I cannot transfer my purchases onto a second computer.
    Not good.

If your iPod is formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats). Mac formatted iPods can only be used on a PC that has a third party helper program such as XPlay or MacDrive installed: How to determine your iPod's disk format
XPlay has the added functionality to let you copy your songs back to iTunes. So you could copy all of your songs to your PC and then restore the iPod to format it for Windows and add the songs back again. A Windows formatted iPod can be used on both platforms though you would have to carry out any firmware updates on a PC to maintain the formatting. If you are interested you can purchase XPlay at this link: XPlay
One last thing, If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer or with more than one library you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply. The content of iTunes and the iPod are not syncronised in this mode so the two can be different. You can directly access the content of the iPod and play it through iTunes and you can drag and drop whatever you want to the iPod from either library:

Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod

  • Using iPod as a flash drive between PC and Mac help!

    Hey guys,
I have no idea how can I make my iPod a flash drive. Well, it was fine when my school used G4 iMacs last week. But now it's all HP pcs. And I cannot transfer my files to those computers anymore. When I plug my iPod via USB to one of them computer, it says that I will need to format the disk drive (iPod) because it cannot read the file system.
I guess it is because of my iPod is always connected to Macs (including mine) so that the file format on the iPod is unreadable to PCs. So I have no idea what to do because I am scared of that PC is going to ruin my iPod hard drive and its OS. I tried plugging it to a PC at my house, same thing happened. I am too scared to try.
Do you guys have any idea?
    Thank you in advance,
    Ton

Probably the easiest way to use an iPod on both Mac and Windows computers is to format the iPod (using iPod Updater) using the PC. This will force your iPod to use the Windows file system (FAT32) which both the Mac and PC can read from and write to without the help of additional software. Of course then all your software updates for the iPod will have to be done on Windows.
If you need to use a Mac (HFS+) formatted iPod on a Windows PC, you'll need to install some 3rd party software such as XPlay 2.0 (which you can get from MediaFour Software). This will enable your Windows PC to read a Mac-formatted iPod.

  • Using iPod as a hard drive between Mac and PC

I'd like to use my Mac-formatted iPod to back up some personal files om my work PC laptop, and then transfer them to my Mac at home. I need to repeat this process every month or so.
I've enabled my iPod for disk use, but the PC wants to reformat in order to allow me to use it as a hard drive on the PC. However, all of my iTunes and photos and videos are on my Mac at home, and I'd like to keep the iPod Mac-formatted.
There appears to be some 3rd-party software trials out there, but I'm reluctant to download anything that is potentially sketchy.
    Advice will be greatly appreciated.

  • Recover deleted songs from iTunes using iPod

I will preface by saying, I am an idiot, so please phrase your answers like you're talking to a 10 year old. I have a new Mac (my first) and I had iTunes all set up and working correctly until somehow I deleted a folder with half my music in it. It is all on my iPod, however. How do I get it from my iPod back into iTunes? There is some SINCERE gratitude here for anyone who can help.
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

If your iPod is set to update automatically you can use a keyboard command to prevent it auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘ Apple) keys. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and it will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer.
Change your update setting to manual so that you can use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using a lot of the utilities your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. External drives are relatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Using IPod on more than one machine

Does anyone know the process to authorize more than one computer to play and recognize an ipod's library? I want to use my ipod on my home computer and work one as well? I want to keep the same library and not lose anything.
Anyone know how to do this? Please help.
    Thanks,

"Does anyone know the process to authorize more than one computer to play and recognize an ipod's library?"
You don't need to authorise a computer to use an iPod on it. If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply. Once your iPod is set to manual you can connect it to other computers and other iTunes libraries without the message that it is linked to another library:

will i lose all that is currently on my ipod

are there any other possible solutions?
    thanks to any responces.

    Hello hoagie96,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
If you have your iPod set up to automatically sync iTunes content, any computer that you hook it up to (other than its original) will ask you to erase and sync, which, yes, will delete everything from your iPod, so make sure you hit Cancel.
If you wish to sync your iPod between two computers, you will need to set it up to manually manage music and videos, which can be accomplished via iTunes. For more information on how to use your iPod with multiple computers, check out this Apple support document. Hope it helps.
