Using Log&Transfer with QuickTime files?

Has anyone tried this? Is it possible? I have been given a drive with .mts files converted to quicktime. The file names are utterly meaningless. Example: I have 30 QT's with duplicate names in different folders, from different shooting days. Obviously I need to relog everything, give it scene/take info. Wondering if I can use Log & Transfer to log the QT files?
The footage was shot 1080p, should I just bring in the .mts files thru log&transfer, ProRes?
Suggestions and guidance very much appreciated.

Thank you for your reply -
The .mov files are Apple ProRes 422(HQ).
As mentioned earlier I also have the original .mts files. Everything was shot AVCHD 1080p.
Short of slogging through thousands of incorrectly labeled .mov files I was thinking of just starting fresh with Log & Capture of the original .mts files.
One of the reasons I'm thinking of working with the .mts files and Log & Capture is that I can rename the clips while retaining the metadata of the original .mts files. My understanding is that this will preserve the link between the 'work print' and the camera original 'negative' so to speak. It will also afford me the easy ability to work in ProRes proxy and uprez later, tho I assume I can bring in the 'mov as proxy and do the same thing?
I've been known to be totally wrong and thus, I am here seeking wisdom.

  • Missing clips when using log & transfer

    Hi everyone,
    I use a canon vixia hf m41, when I use log & transfer it works fine except some clips are missing!  There are less clips in the log and transfer window then there are in the stream folder..........

    I tried this again last night with a slightly different result.  This time, all .m4v files were copied as .mov files to the Event folder, but no clips were created in iMovie.  I then tried dragging the .mov files from the Event folder to the Event in iMovie, but I received the following error:
    "The files will not be imported.  They are not compatible with iMovie."
    So, the .mov files that iMovie itself created are not compatible with iMovie.
    I also verified that there are no non-Apple codecs in the Library\Quicktime folder per this thread:

    Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • "clips queued-idle" error using log&transfer in FCP7

    Hi, I shoot HDV on a Sony Z5 and now want to use a Sony memory recording unit (HVR-MRC1) instead of tapes.
    Today I ran some tests and the first time all went well: I connected the HVR-MRC1 with a firewire cable, opened log&transfer in FCP 7 and no problem importing all the files (after downloading a plugin).
    But then I deleted all the files and recorded some new clips. Once I tried to import those in FCP, using log & transfer I could only import 7 of the 9 clips. Of the 2 clips it didn't want to import it said "clips queued - idle".
    Also, I realised that none of the clips I shot could be previewed and I couldn'y choose an in- and outpoint before importing. I could only import the whole clip.
    I would be extremely grateful if someone could help me with this. I'm looking forward to working tapeless, but I need to be 100% sure that I'll have access to all my footage.
    Many thanks in advance!

    First thing, I always copy the material to a local hard drive before doing the log and transfer.  Make sure you copy the containing folder from the camera.  If you change the folder structure, fcp will not be able to access the material.
    What settings did you shoot with.  FCP is not compatible with certain formats.  If you have access to Premiere, you may be able to convert the files to an fcp friendly format.
    Good luck.

  • JS error while using input fields with type=file on XP SP2

    Hi all,
    we found a new problem in applications which use input fields with type=file running in a browser on Microsoft Windows XP with SP2.
    A typical test layout might look like:
    <html>
      <head>
        <title>File-Upload</title>
      </head>
      <body>
        <form action="/cgi-bin/upload.pl" method=post
              enctype="multipart/form-data">
          <input type=file size=50 maxlength=100000 name="file"
                 accept="text/*"><br>
          <button onclick="document.forms[0].submit();">Send</button>
        </form>
      </body>
    </html>
    When you add a link without the fully qualified path (for example pic01.jpg instead of c:\pictures\pic01.jpg) and click on the 'Send' button, nothing happens and you get a Javascript error 'Access denied'.
    The solution can be found in the MS Knowledge Base article 892442:

  • Log & Transfer Error (.mov files) Issue

    When I add my SD info in Log & Transfer Window i get the error message "100Canon" contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media.....
    I used a Canon EOS Rebel to get the footage. I understand that FCE does not work with these .mov files without having to be forced to render.
    Is there any way that I can transfer these .mov files to avoid having to render? If not can I convert them to another file without loosing quality? Is there any solution to avoid having to render?

    You may lose a tiny bit of quality but it won't be noticeable. In Streamclip, you go to +File > Export to Quicktime+ and choose the Apple Intermediate Codec as your compression. Make sure you set a frame rate of 29.97 and audio to Uncompressed Stereo 48kHz. The exported video will be an AIC file in a .mov container.

  • Log & Transfer with Mac OS 10.6.2

    Having previously had a fully working, and it has to be said impressive, installation of FCE 4.0.1 I attempted to ingest some new footage recently. I had not used FCE for about 3 months as I had no need to.
    FCE started up great and I was able to create a new project as well; but when I opened the Log & Transfer window and attempted to add the folder I'd copied from the camera's SD card, nothing. The folder name does not appear as the source at the top of the window and no files appear in the top list pane.
    Now to troubleshoot here's my line of thought:-
    1. The latest footage is corrupt.
    2. The system has changed since Iast used FCE. (This is true and I will come to this soon)
    3. The FCE install is corrupted.
    So here's what I've done to address each of the above steps.
    1. I returned to the last footage I'd successfully ingested and I could not add that footage's folder to the L&T window either, as a precaution I then trashed the preferences and tried again, still no good.
    2. As stated above my system has changed as since the last time I used FCE I've upgraded to Mac OS 10.6 and subsequently 10.6.2 also I've installed Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.0. So to troubleshoot this I needed a test bed and so used a spare internal SATA drive as a new Startup Drive and performed the following.
    i. Erased the drive and re-formated as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    ii. Installed Mac OS 10.5.
    iii. Patched 10.5 with three iterations of Software Update.
    iv. Installed FCE 4.0.
    v. Patched FCE to 4.0.1.
    vi. Tested FCE and it worked perfectly, interesting but not the solution I would like.
    vii. Installed Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.0 and then tested FCE and it worked perfectly.
    viii. Updated Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.0 and then tested FCE and it worked perfectly.
    ix. Upgraded Mac OS to 10.6 and then tested FCE and it failed to add folders to the L&T pane.
    x. Patched Mac OS to 10.6.2 with three more iterations of Software Update and then tested FCE and it failed to add folders to the L&T pane.
    Ok a short pause in the overly detailed breakdown of what has occurred (I don't want anybody to be in any doubt as to my veracity in troubleshooting).
    So as far as the above sequence is concerned Mac OS 10.6.x does not support FCE and AVCHD media, as an added 'feature' after two attempts at adding a path to the footage FCE crashes completely.
    Maybe a 'clean' clean install is what is needed.
    xi. Erased the drive and re-formated as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) again.
    xii. Installed Mac OS 10.6 and patched with three iterations of Software Update.
    xiii. Installed FCE 4.0 and patched with Software Update to 4.0.1.
    xiv. Tested FCE and it still will not add a path to any media and crashes after a handful of attempts at getting it to do so.
    So the third of possible causes i.e. FCE install corrupted is excluded as cause 2 Mac OS problems are the culprit.
    Am I the only person with a professional spec (albeit a little long in the tooth, yet very capable) machine; built with the latest OS as per manufacturers recommendations; FCE software installed as per best practice and the media stored on a dedicated drive in the AVHCD file structure (as a footnote the software will not "see" the camera either) who is unable to use FCE as it will not do what it says on the tin. Unless the tin is 10.5.
    Spleen vented is anybody able to help?

    Impressive - you've been very methodical & thorough - I wish most posts were as thoroughly detailed as yours! But something else is going on. I have FCE 4.0.1 on 10.6.2 and it's working perfectly; ditto for a lot of other people here.
    You mentioned that you +"attempted to add the folder I'd copied from the camera's SD card"+ - have you tried Log&Transfer directly from your camcorder? If not, try that and let us know what happens (or not).
    When you copied that folder from your SD card, did you copy the +entire folder structure+ (all the way from the root of the SD card) or just the folder containing the video? That could be the problem (you need the entire folder structure for AVCHD video, not just the folder containing the MTS files.) What camcorder are you using?

  • After Effects CC stopped working with QuickTime files

    I can not reliably use QuickTime (Animation or ProRes codec) in my timeline. I also can't export to QuickTime. I believe accepting the latest update to CC or my system software initiated this problem. I did not have this problem last week. I have converted all of my source QTs to .PNG sequences and .AIFs as a work-around.
    System Details:
    CS 6 CC | Mac OS 10.8.4 | MacPro5,1 | 96 GB Ram | PROJECT & MEDIA drive: Mercury Accelsior > 500 MB/s read/write | CACHE drive: Mercury Accelsior > 500 MB/s read/write | Nvidia Quadro 4000 Mac | CUDA Driver: latest update.
    Troubleshooting Info:
    • I've read this article: http://blogs.adobe.com/aftereffects/2011/02/troubleshooting-quicktime-errors-with-after-ef fects.html
    • I don't have Blackmagic or Aja, but I do have Nvidia Quadro 4000 Mac with the latest Nvidia and Cuda drivers. I'll try uninstalling... but I may want to raytrace in the coming days.
    • I've trashed the 12.0 folder and rebooted many times
    • repaired permissions
    • Multi-threding on/off doesn't matter
    update
    • "QT32Server process" appears then disappears Activity Monitor when I try to render ProRes (output module fails...)
    • No firewall
    • Uninstaled Nvidia driver. Restarted. Same problems.
    and then
    • Created a fresh admin user. This seems to work for now: I can read and write QTs through AE again. I'll update if there are any changes.
    update again
    • Once again, I  can not import ProRes QTs into AE CC. Making a new user only worked for 2 launches. The only software I used with this system/new user was Adobe AE CC, PS CC, and Safari.
    Any suggestions?
    Best,
    Benjamin

    Hello,
    My team and I have been following this thread - we've been having very similar issues. Namely the 86::2 error and "MooV file is damaged or unsupported."
    We had these issues on two machines from the first time we ran Ae CC and Pr CC early last week and were on OS 10.7.5. So we did a clean install and upgraged to Mountain Lion.
    System Info: CS 6 | FCP 7 | 2x2.93 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon | 64 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 ECC | NVIDIA Quadro 4000 2048 MB | OS X 10.8.4 | Latest CUDA drivers | AJA KonaLHi drivers 10.4.4 (we have moved back from 10.4.5 upon reccomendation from AJA tech support.)
    The second machine is the same as above, but with 20 GB of ram.
    (Red Giant plugins were installed after the crashes on the clean install)
    We are networked with an XSAN.
    On my machine, the first listed above, I seem to have stemmed the issue in Ae by uninstalling Premiere. Without Premiere none of the problems in AE occur.
    On my clean install the timeline of app installation went: first FCP, then Ae, then Pr. When I installed Premiere the problems arose again, 86::2 error and MooV error and the issue still arrises on the 20 GB machine when switching between Ae and Pr.
    I hope that makes sense.
    We will troubleshoot the Quicktime files tomorrow. I hope this can be helpful!
    Thanks.

  • Working with Quicktime files on your timeline.

    I'm working on a project where I'm using clips from previously created videos that are in Quicktime format. I'm also using some footage straight from my DV tapes. When I go to export this project, many of the clips are off. They'll be of slightly different footage (right before or after the desired clip), the timing will be off, transitions are in slightly different places, etc. The clips straight from DV are preserved, but the other ones come out all wrong when I export it to DVD Studio Pro or as a Quicktime file.
    (I also put those clips from previous Quicktime movies on my timeline and then the next time I go to view them on my timeline, they're of a different scene and do not play the way I left them.)
    I have been using Final Cut Pro and other editing softwares like it for many years now and have never come across something like this. Does anyone have any insight into why clips from previously created videos are not preserved in my new project and the movie I export comes out with the clips/timing all out of sorts.
    I appreciate any help!

    'Quicktime' or the '.mov' extension isn't a format, it's a wrapper, ie- a brandname that is stamped on anything 'made' by/for quicktime.
    To find out the true format of these problematic clips, open them in QT and press cmd+i to get basic info, or in FCP, select a clip in the browser or timeline and press cmd+9 to view item properties... here you will actually see the true format.

  • Cannot capture using log & transfer because warning message

    Hi,
    I recently switched cameras - from using a Canon Mini DV ZR 900 to a Panasonic SDR-H85. Of course when I plug in the new camera to the computer via USB, FCE4 doesn't recognize it because it's AVCHD. The media (video clips & stills) is transferred anyway via Adobe Bridge and stored in a designated folder on my hard drive. I then converted the video clips from .MOD to .MOV with MPEG Streamclip. The converted clips are saved in a different folder. I also did the easy set up changing the format to Apple Intermediate Codec and use to AVCHD 1440X1080i60. So then I start a new project and try to do log and transfer but when I try to add the folder containing the converted clips, I get a warning window that says that the folder contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure and to please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media. Can someone please tell me what is wrong or what I'm missing? I need to have a way to identify and organize these clips. Thanks!

    Okay, as soon as I get my next check. Judging by your response and what I read on the Apple site, that will solve my problem? I sure hope so. One of the reasons I switched from recording to tape to hard drive is because an Apple Store techie assured me it would be much easier capturing using log and transfer rather than the long drawn out process I was using with tape (making subclips, etc.). So I was pretty upset to encounter this obstacle. I wasn't warned about the perils of AVCHD, and reading the process in your book it didn't seem like it should have been a problem anyway. So I'm still quite confused. But that's okay. I'll be happy enough just to have something working finally! Thanks

  • Using Compressor to create QuickTime file for Web

    Have: a 2 minute clip, shot in HD, edited in FCP7. Exported it as a FCP QuickTime movie, 1080i60, size is 441MB.
    Need to: take that QuickTime file into Compressor and create a much smaller file, which will ultimately be converted to Flash and posted on a Web site. Have tried various QuickTime outputs in Compressor -- the resulting files are either too large, blurry, or lose the widescreen aspect ratio.
    Please, help.

    Screen Resolution: 640 x 360.
