Using only Compatible IDs in a driver INF file

Hi,
I am looking at using only a Compatible ID, and no Hardware ID, in our USB driver's INF file. This appears to work fine on Windows 8.1, at least, though Inf2Cat throws a warning about the missing Hardware ID.
The MSDN online documentation does not mention anything about the invalid use of Compatible IDs, but through some further googling I have found some sources that suggest vendors should not use Compatible IDs, but there is no explanation as to why this is
the case.
Is anyone able to provide an explanation as to why INF files must contain a Hardware ID and cannot contain only Compatible IDs? I am unclear whether this is due to a technical reason, or a design / WHQL certification reason.
For further info as to why I am trying to only use compatible IDs, here is a simplified view. We have two installation packages. The Primary package comes with a lot of baggage. The Secondary package is lighter. Both packages contain different tools and
the user has the choice to install either one, or both at the same time based on how they wish to use the device. Since the secondary package does not support all the functionality of the primary package, the secondary package installs a limited driver, compared
to the Primary package's driver. If both packages are installed, we need the Primary driver to take precedence. It seems to me that using Compatible IDs was a more logical way to go rather than using FeatureScore to prioritise the drivers.
Regards,
Emil

Thanks for the replies.
So compatible IDs in an INF file are really only meant for class drivers, and virtual print drivers?
It's a shame since it seemed to fit our situation quite well. Our secondary driver is used by several of our USB devices and is only used to provide firmware updates, otherwise the device in question is normally controlled via ethernet. If the primary driver
is installed (optional for the user) it also allows firmware updating, but has further functionality beyond what is capable over ethernet. This is why I thought that compatible IDs in the secondary driver would be more appropriate because it is used by multiple
devices but has very limited functionality.

What is the Windows XP HP Photosmart 7960 driver (.inf) file name?

I have tried every solution I can find to my problem - I cannot install a Photosmart 7960 printer on my HP Pavilion XP desktop.  The installation wizard won't work.  It ends in an error message and then undoes what it has accomplished up to that point.  I think the wizard extracts the driver(s) from the downloaded file hp_53_enu.exe and puts it in the right place before the error, then it undoes that progress, making it impossible to find the driver or even identify the file name.  I want to try some manual installation ideas, but I need to find the actual driver, not the zip file or the wizard.  Can someone tell me the driver filename(s)?  I can find the file on a second, identical computer if you can give me the file name.
    Thanks

  • Need driver (*.inf) files for HP OfficeJet 5610 All-in-one

I am setting up a print server and it needs *.inf driver files for my HP OfficeJet 5610 All-in-one printer. Where can i find them? I've installed the drivers on my PC, but they come as *.exe files that will not extract to give the *.inf files. Can anyone help?

Hello, First I would like to say that I dont like what HP does, I dont want all your software cloging up my computer. What I want if for the hardware I have purchased from you to work the way I want to. Nothing more nothing less. Please give your customers the chance to pick the software they want and not fill up the pc with trash.
PlanoStar You will find the x86 inf file in the Windows XP Package, it about an 68mb download, just extract EP-CDB-enu_NB.exe using Winrar.
And ofcourse after the hours spent, with HP trolling you, you would think you are done. Think again. Microsoft will pick up the tradition with some Install x86 Medea ntprint.inf BS. to solve this problem download the files needed from here.
It will save you hours instead of mounting AIO images and whatever.
Ps. I have just registered with HP with the sole reason of making this post, and I would just like to say that hp support is rubbish.

  • Can I use the time capsule internal hard drive for file storage?

Can I configure the Time Capsule internal HD to function as a network file server as well as handling time machine backups?
Can the internal HD be partitioned?

This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
It cannot be partitioned. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
    Major issues.
    1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
    2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great.
    3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no controls.
    4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
    5. iTunes will constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is too slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
    6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
    7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.
Read pondini for some work arounds.

  • ITUNES - Are there disadvantages to using different Apple IDs for inistalling the .app?

ITUNES - Are there disadvantages to using different Apple IDs for inistalling the .app file not overwrite the previous one at itunes?

In my opinion it is best to use one Apple ID on your computer and iPad. Using multiple IDs causes confusion.
I also suggest that each person with their own iOS device have their own unique Apple ID. On the computer create different accounts for each user so that iTunes on each account can be associated with the correct Apple ID.

  • How do I uninstall the .inf file (for USB)

I read here how to create and install an .inf file:
    http://zone.ni.com/devzone/conceptd.nsf/webmain/6792BAB18242082786256DD7006B6416?opendocument
Before I start... How do I uninstall it if required?

    Hey Viking,
If you installed a driver for the device then all you have to do is uninstall the driver. For example if I wanted to use a DAQPad I would just uninstall NI-DAQ.
However, Windows ships with drivers for several USB devices. In this case you have a few options. After creating your .inf file and installing it you can go to the device manager and click update driver for the device and then manually select the .inf file you created instead of the default one that windows uses.
You could also search the inf files on your computer (normally at C:\Windows\inf) for a file that contains your specific vendor and device ID. Then comment out the line that references your device.
    I hope this helps out.

  • Old JVC Video camera, driver only compatible with windows.

I have an old JVC camera, i would like to transfer the video which is on mini DV cassette via usb to my macbook pro however the device is not recognised and the driver is only compatible with windows.

I have an old JVC camera, i would like to transfer the video which is on mini DV cassette
It would help if you give us the exact model JVC camcorder you have.
That said, nearly all miniDV camcorders (including JVC miniDV cams) transfer video via Firewire (aka iLink or IEEE 1394), not USB.   And no drivers are required, at least not on a Mac.  If you have a more recent Mac that has a Thunderbolt port (no Firewire port), you can use an Apple Thunderbolt-Firewire adapter to connect your camcorder to your Mac (although you may also need a 4-pin to 9-pin FW cable).
Also, on miniDV camcorders that have both Firewire and USB connections, the USB connection is almost exclusively reserved for transferring still photos from the memory card in the camcorder, not video from the miniDV cassettes.

I have different iCloud IDs for my iPhone &Mac and I have 5GB on each, if I decide to use only 1 ID for both, can I have 10GB or will I be limited to 5 since it's 1 iCloud ID. I am afraid that if I I use only 1 iCloud ID for both of them I will be limited to only 5GB which is small a nd I don't have money to be paying annually for extra GB. Thanks and waiting for your replies.

The free 5GB allowance is per account, not per device.
If you back up to iTunes, 5 GB should be more than enough for the average user.

Hello, I have two questions on time capsule  I can only have it on my external hd files and free up my internal memory to my mac  I can use an external hard drive, in my case a lacie rugged as shared memory for my two computers

I have a mackbook pro and an iMac if I buy a time capsule 2tb airport, I can use it with time machine and what would be the best way to use it.
There is no particular setup required for TM.. both computers will create their own backup sparsebundle which is like a virtual disk.. Pondini explains the whole thing if you read the reference I gave you.
and how to use time capsule airport whit other external hd to use my old lacie airport with the new time capsule
Up to you.. you can plug the external drive into the TC and enjoy really slow file transfers or you can plug it into your computer and use it as external drive.. which is faster than the TC.. and TM can include it in the backup.
Again everything is explained in the reference.. you are not reading it.

    tornado2003,
What you need to do is boot into Safe Mode. Then delete the VGA Drivers.
After that boot normally and install the latest nVidia ForceWare Drivers

You want system, data, backup etc. Make good use of the four internal drive bays.
You will have to use Disk Utility to ERASE or click on drive and use PARTITION to make it Mac writeable.

  • Using only an External Drive

I bought an iomega external drive to hold my 900CD library on (160GB) so I would not use space on the internal drive. The problem is I keep ripping CD's and they keep going to the internal drive. Can anyone tell me how to use only the external drive for itunes and my ipod(30GB)?

See this link from MacMuse, follow his instructions EXACTLY & you should be good to go. Just think, once you get the EHD up & running, no more worries about losing your music due to a computer crash. The other thing I would recommend is a secondary backup such as burning data CD's or DVD's which is what I do. I only burn about once or twice a month now, but this is just extra insurance in case the EHD takes a hike for some reason.
    MacMuse, "Computer Crashed" #4, 11:49pm Feb 7, 2005
    EDIT:
I forgot, the one thing that was suggested to me when I put my EHD in is to regularly send backups of the .itl & .xml files which are the database files for your library, playlists, etc. to your EHD. I send copies of these 2 files to the EHD any time I add music, change playlists, etc. DO NOT MOVE the original files off your main HD, that is there "home." If you should happen to have bad luck & have a crash with these 2 files backed up, along with the iTunes music folder, you should be able to get iTunes up & running in a "jiffy".
