Using Oracle as an LDAP slave???

Hello.
I'm not sure this is the right place for my problem and if it isn't it would be very nice if someone could tell me where to post this question.
The thing is that I have a product which is built on top of an Oracle database. I'm currently in the process of integrating our product to another companys user registration system. They are using LDAP to register their users and what I'd like to do is replicate the data from their LDAP to specified tables and fields in our Oracle (this is done because our product relies on the Oracle DB but their system relies on the LDAP but we still need the same data to be in both datastores, e.g. a user should have the same password whichever he/she is using...).
My question is: Does anybody know of a convenient way to replicate data between the LDAP and the Oracle DB? We are currently looking at using plugins to the Netscape LDAP server which would register the information to our Oracle. The Netscape LDAP would then have to be set up as a slave to the master LDAP they are using and so on... But wouldn't it be nice if I could just set up our Oracle to be an LDAP slave? And I would be able to specify which column in which table each LDAP entry corresponds to... or something like that!
Well.. I've taken up enough of your time... I hope someone can help me with this... or at least tell me where I might be able to find information about this.
Kind regards from Iceland,
Stefan

Dear Stefan
(Please send the King of Iceland my regards)
We have just undertaken a similar project - but in reverse - i.e. synchronising an LDAP server from Oracle.
Our challenge was a little simpler in that we could use triggers to instigate an LDAP call on update/delete/insert.
We originally tried using the Oracle JVM in conjunction with the Netscape's LDAP JSDK, but this proved too flakey, and we have reverted to calling an extproc which inturn calls some java code to update LDAP.
Working the other way would be more complex and I'm not sure how you could get LDAP to invoke a command to update Oracle.
However, if you managed the process from within Oracle you could maybe use LDAP groups to maintain a list of those users that were in sync, and those that required synchronising.
Good luck
Andrew

  • When do we use Oracle LDAP ?

    Version: 11.2.0.3 on RHEL 5.8
    I have used tnsnames.ora file and easyConnect to connect to the DB.
    Recently , I came across Oracle LDAP which uses $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/ldap.ora .
    What kind of applications use Oracle LDAP to connect to a DB ?
    Why do we even need Oracle LDAP mechanism when we had tnsnames.ora file for DB Name resolving ?

    Hi Ken,
    Generally it's used for 'large' sites where there are a large number of databases and a large number of clients. Rather than everyone having a copy of the tnsnames files that is somehow kept up to date on lots of servers and clients you can store the tnsnames entries in ldap (OID or microsoft AD). Then it's stored in one central place that everyone queries, a change then is made centrally and picked up by everyone immediately - making a large estate much easier to manage.
    It is also needed for 'enterprise user security' (again using oid) - here users are stored in a central directory and referenced from each database in the estate. You change the password for you username in the directory and that password is then 'updated' for every database (without having to go an alter user on every single system - each database looks in oid to validate the username and work out what rights it should have) - it's very powerful stuff for large estates and makes things much easier to manage.
    For small systems though it will probably never be required.
    Cheers,
    Harry

  • Slow first connection using Oracle 10g xe and Visual Studio 2008

    {noformat}
    Good day,
    I'm slightly unaccustomed to using forums, so bear with me.
    My initial connection to the Oracle database takes approximately 30 seconds. It seems to be waiting for a connection before timing out and trying another connection which works, as all subsequent connections work immediately. I'm unsure how other people's responses in forums can help me due to the plethora of configurations, so here's mine. My comprehension of the oracle world is still growing, you'll have to explain the terms you're using for me, Hoping you can help.
    I'm using Visual Studio 2008, set to use 32 bit debug mode, on a Windows 7 Pro platform. Also using Oracle 10g Xe, and have installed the 32 bit version of ODAC 11.2 (11.2.0.1) to aid making a connection from Visual Studio to Oracle.
    I have a database set up and a user with system admin rights. This is all local for a programming project and will never see the light of day outside of my personal machine.
    I am using code to connect, not the GUI. I wish to code this project completely without the aid of the GUI. so my connection string within Visual Studio C# is (pw/id hidden)...
    string xe = "Data Source=xe;User Id=xxxxx;Password=xxxxx;";
    OracleConnection conn = new OracleConnection(xe);
    My c:\devsuitehome\network\admin\sqlnet.ora file is this:
    # sqlnet.ora Network Configuration File: C:\DevSuiteHome\network\admin\sqlnet.ora
    # Generated by Oracle configuration tools.
    SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS)
    NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH= (LDAP, TNSNAMES, EZCONNECT, ONAMES, HOSTNAME)
    And my c:\devsuitehome\network\admin\TNSNames.ora file is this:
    tnsnames.ora Network Configuration File: C:\DevSuiteHome\network\admin\tnsnames.ora
    Generated by Oracle configuration tools.
    XE =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 127.0.0.1)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = xe)
    EXTPROC_CONNECTION_DATA =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = <machine name)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = PLSExtProc)
    Just for good measure, my tnsping xe shows:
    "Used paramter files:<br/>
    c:\devsuitehome\network\admin\sqlnet.ora<br/><br/>
    Used TNSNAMES adapter to resolve the alias<br/>
    Attempting to contact (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 127.0.0.1)(PORT = 1521)))(CONNECT_DATA = (SERVICE_NAME = xe)))
    OK (0 msec)"
    So, how can I make that initial connection faster so I don't spend 15 years testing my application due to slow start-ups? :)
    Thank you.
    Kevin.

    I have formatted my hard drive since my first post. I was running window 64 bit with a higher version of the ODAC and that proved to crash my machine with faulty error messages about memory. I have reverted to a previous version of the ODAC tools and everything works very smooth now. Still the connection time is consistently 20 seconds or longer on the first attempt.
    Just a little more information.. I am currently taking a college course with 15 other students, as you can tell by the impersonal machine name, where programming using visual studio 2008, and Oracle 10g xe is expected. All of us are using a 64 bit environment and we all have difficulties cutting down the load time of making the first connection to Oracle. Some people are longer making the connection, but none are shorter.
    One other note. After the first connection is made, taking 20 or more seconds, and is closed, all subsequent openings of the connection are instantaneous, for all of us.
    If there is ANYTHING more I can get for you, please let me know. With my environment stable as it is, I will not need to format or change any information for the foreseeable future.
    Here is the information you requested
    1 The connection method I am using, I have chosen the manual connection for you, however the delay exists if the connection is made through the GUI as well.
    Historically, I am getting slow connection speeds through adding the connection through the GUI or by a manual connection. Here is how I am doing it manually. I have the connection being created in 20 seconds, which is the best I can get.

                con.Open()
                MessageBox.Show("Connected!")
                con.Close()
                con.Dispose()

    I fought for weeks about the ODAC version 11.2.0.1 that you see in the previous post, and that would be a whole new thread. Suffice it to say I have a reliable environment to program in with this 10.2.0.1.0 version that I am running now, and the connection time has not changed, it is still minimum 20 seconds load time, sometimes up to 25.

    Yes. I have added;
    <dbms_column-type>OracleBlob</dbms-column-type>
    It fails because the locater to the blob, obtained by findBYPrimaryKeyis
    null.
    i.e. an empty_blob() is not created.
    Have you got CMP to access Blobs in WLS 6.1?

    I can access Clobs using CMP. If you are using the Oracle OCI Driveryou
    do not
    need to add this line.
    However if you are using the Oracle Type 4 Thin drivers you need
    to
    add;
    <dbms_column-type>OracleClob</dbms-column-type>
    to the file;
    weblogic-cmp-rdbms-jar-xml
    This DOES NOT work with Blobs.
    I am unable to get WebLogic 6.1 sp4 persist a Blob to an Oracle
    8.1.x
    table and
    retrieve it using either CMP or BMP.
    Unless any one show me a complete working CMP and BMP example?

  • Using Dynamic Groups in Ldap for Accounts and Roles

    Does anyone currently use dynamic groups in LDAP for accounts and roles? I have set up a dynamic group in ldap (we are using OID Oracle internet Directory 10.1.2.0) , ldapsearch returns the correct list of unique names, but the account does not appear on my profile page when I log in to UCM (10.1.3). I cannot find any documentation so I'm asking myself if it is supported .....

    Thanks tim ... will check, but Oracle are saying :
    Oracle Universal Content Management - Version: 7.5.1
    Information in this document applies to any platform.
    Product: Content Server
    Version: 6.0
    Goal
    Can the Content Server's LDAP provider support, or can it be configured to support, dynamic LDAP groups?
    Solution
    The Content Server by itself is unable to process dynamic LDAP groups since the filter that is used cannot read dynamic groups. However, dynamic groups can still work in the Content Server if the permissions for the queried user are generated on the LDAP server side. For example: Novell and Active Directory both have this functionality.
    to which I have replied you suport 3rd party ldaps, but not your own? Shurely shome mishtake ..... if ldap search works in a seamless way, surely provider should too ....
    Billy, you may well be right, just got a cashflow problem over here !

    "cn=webi" is this the distinguished name for the LDAP account?
    also try using the IP instead of hostname
    and if you CMS is using oracle try to use 10.2.0.2 or earlier driver.

    In order to use the built-in LDAP authentication scheme in my ApEx application, do I have to have anything more installed in my oracle environment or available to us than accessible LDAP addressing? Our environment is a 10.2 database instance (Enterprise Edition) with ApEx and Microsoft Active Directory that has LDAP setup. It looks like all the DBMS.LDAP packages are in place in my database.
    I'm using something similar to the below for built-in prompts but all LDAP tests fail:
    host=ourdc1.ourdc2.ourdc3.edu
    Port=389
    cn=%LDAP_USER%,OU=Users, OU=Department,DC=ourdc1,DC=ourdc2,DC=ourdc3,DC=edu

    Hello,
    What is your name?
    I know this sounds funny but when I was starting with AD LDAP authentication I seem to remember the user name being the key. Instead of "username" I had to use "[email protected]".
    Ultimately, I created a custom package built on DBMS_LDAP as the ApEx package is really targeted for OID.

  • Running webcenter Portal  based enterprise application using oracle webcenter content on the java cloud.

    And direction on how to use cloud service for a oracle webcenter application based on oracle webcenter content.
    We currently have an on premise enterprise application that is built using oracle webcenter,content ,
    ADF and connecting to OID for authentication and authorization.
    From the document I get the we can have the ADF application deployed.
    How about the migration of content.
    Can we build a webcenter portal domain?
    Can we have OID instance?
    Can we have BIP instance on the cloud?

    Hello,
    You can currently store users of the WebCenter products in the embedded LDAP server provided by the WebLogic server.
    As far as I know, BIP or OID are not currently supported in the cloud.

  • Error while creating a report that uses Oracle OCI JDBC connectivity

    Please let me know why my CR and LF characters are removed from my forum posting *****
    Hi,
    I was trying to create a report that uses Oracle OCI JDBC connectivity. I am using Eclipse3.4 download from "cr4e-all-in-one-win_2.0.2.zip".  I have successfully created a JDBC OCI connection.
    The connection parameters are given below:
    URL: jdbc:oracle:oci8:@xe
    Database: xe
    username: <userName>
    password: <password>
    I have tested the above connection in Data source Explorer and it works fine!!!
    But I am getting the following error when I drag-and-drop a table from the list of tables. Not sure what I am missing here?  Any help is highly appreciated.

    Hi Ted,
    Thanks for the feedback. I was able to create a report in Creystal Reports Designer 2008 using OCI.  It is not allowing only in the Eclipse plugin. In our environment we are not allowed to user Oracle thin connections and ONLY OCI is allowed.
    1) Can you please let me know if there is a way to do this?
    2) Will it allow data sources using native database driver?
    3) If so, can I use JRC to create these reports from a desktop java program?
    Thanks & Regards

  • Help needed in using oracle rules SDK

    Hi,
    For testing my rulesets using oracle rules SDK I doing the following:
    1. Creation of dictionary, ruleSet.
    2. Declared two kinds of globalVariable variables in my datamodel :
    Final and non-Final.(Type of these varaibles are String and Double only)
    3. Final globalVaraibles are used in creating rule's patterns.
    4. Non-Final globalVariables are used in creating rule's action.
    5. Functions are created for asserting globalVariables values and
    returning non-final varaibles, since those are required as action
    results.
    6. In java code I am testing my ruleset (dict.testRuleSet()). Before
    testing i am populating my final global variables (since these are used
    in rule's patterns),
    and updating datamodel.
    The above procedure is working fine and I rules are successfully working.
    Now, first of all i want to know if the above mentioned approach is correct or it needs to be reframed??
    secondly, when i update datamodel with values (in java code itself) it
    takes 4-5 seconds in updating it. This is the main issue that why it is
    taking this much time??
    any comment would be of great help.
    Thanks in advance.

    I will send up an alert for you, Colin. Even though I use iTunes for Mac, troubleshooting it isn't my forté.

  • Compiling Apache 1.3.9 & PHP 3.0.12 to use Oracle 8.1.5 on SuSe 6.2

    Hi!
    I am trying to compile the above packets but am running into massive problems.
    PHP3 compiles well, if i try to use the "normal" static module for Apache, but the Apache configure script says that it needs an ANSI C compiler and stops.
    I am using GCC 2.7.2.3 with the bugfixes from SuSe.
    Since that did not work I tried the configuration as a Dynamic Module. The Apache "Readme.config" explains two ways to do so, but the first has the same problem with GCC and the second (via APXS) compiles Apache without problems, but PHP3 wont compile since it does not find a library. The exact error is: "/usr/i486-linux/bin/ld: cannot open -lclntsh: No such file or directory"
    I found a libclntsh.so.8.0 in the oracle/lib directory, but since i fumbled around with this library (i tried ln -s libclntsh.so.8.0 libclntsh.so) sqlplus says libclntsh.so.8.0: cannot find file data: no such file or directory (even now that the link is deleted again).
    And PHP still wont compile. Any ideas would be welcome.
    P.S.: Is it normal that Oracle has to be told NOT to create a database during install, TO create a database???
    We worked for 3 days on the Oracle installation and that was the only way to install Oracle without errors.
    thx

    SuSe 6.2 have a patch file for Oracle made from their developers.
    Never use Oracle 8.1.5.0.1 patch file that doesn't work because
    us bugged.
    Use SuSe 6.2 Oracle patch set.
    (don't remember the web page where you can download it but a
    search with word "oracle" from SuSe homepage will lead you to
    it)

  • SSO and how to Managing User Roles/Privileges with Forms using Oracle db

    We are in the process of implementing Oracle Application Server SSO with our custom Forms application using Oracle database -- all 10.2.0.1.0 version.
    In our Forms Applications, we have about a dozen roles we have assigned to various users. We need to identify each user using our Forms because we are using the GLOBAL USER throughout the application.
    Questions:
    -- Do we have to create users/passwords in both OID and application database?
    -- Is there a way to easily manage the user and passwords between SSO and Forms App/database in one place? For example, how does a user change their password once, but actually change it in both the database and SSO?
    Any advice and/or direction would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Mika

    Yes, you can have global roles in the DB and assign this roles to specific OID users, and the will heritage the privilages, you can do this using Oracle Identity Management Web Tool http://hostname:7777/oiddas is not complicated.

  • Does sun Cluster 3.0/3.1 HA Oracle agent support to use Oracle spfile?

    When defining the resource, the 'parameter_file' properties is usually sets to the Oracle pfile. Is it possible to use Oracle spfile?
    It is said if leaving 'parameter_file' NULL, it will be default to Oracle default. Suppose leaving it NULL and with Oracle spfile created in default location, will it use the spfile?

    You did not specify which Sun Cluster version and Oracle version you are running.
    Within SC 3.1 my understanding is that beginning with Oracle 9i it is possible to use the spfile.
    If you leave the "parameter_file" property empty (NULL) then the default behaviour for 9i should work:
    search under $ORACLE_HOME/dbs in the order:
    1. spfile$(ORACLE_SID}.ora
    2. spfile.ora
    3. init${ORACLE_SID}.ora
