Using OS X Server as a backup nameserver and mail relay

Hi there
I manage websites and email on behalf of a number of clients, and until now have just used basic shared hosting for all their needs. However, I have had issues with the hosts, and have recently moved over to a VPS at my webhost to give me more scope and control.
I have roughly got my head around everything I need to do to make it work from a theory point of view with DNS, email etc, but now the technical part of setting up backups on my OS X server is challenging me. There are two main services I want to offer backup for using my little home server on a static IP: backuo mail-relay and nameserver. The key is that these are pure backup for the 0.01% of the time that any webhost has a problem, so I am comfortable that they can be done from home.
There are two specific areas I hope to use the Mac backup for:
1) I want to ensure that should the VPS go down (or need to be restarted/maintained) I have a backup mail server to catch and queue mail until my server is back up. I think this is straightforward(ish) for a single domain, but I need to be able to do this for multiple users over multiple domains. Can anyone point me in the right direction for setting this up?
2) As part of this, to be a bit more professional, I am using the VPS as a nameserver, so my clients see my domain as their nameserver. While I have multiple IPs, I only have one VPS, so if this goes down then the mail backup I set up above won't be contactable as the nameserver will also be down. Therefore I also need to be able to set up OS X as a secondary (slave) nameserver for all the domains. Again, can anyone point me in the right direction for this?
Many thanks
Richard

You would setup your backup mail server as a secondary MX server. But you have to ask yourself is it worth the effort. What is the SLA you have with your hosting provider. If they guarantee 99.9% uptime then a mail server may only ever go down for 1 or 2 hours max. Mail would not be lost during this time it would just get queued.
What front end is your VPS using is it CPANEL or Plesk?
Here is an interesting document that relates to cPanel.

Can I use my Time Capsule as a backup disk and put files from my other USB external hard drive on it, using the TC as an external as well?

Actually, there is a way to limit the amount of space Time Machine uses for backup so that it won't eat up all your disk space...for example, I have mine set to only use 65GB, and then it starts to overwrite older backups...Google it for more info. To begin with, I deleted my Sparse Disk Image Bundle from Time Capsule, and used Disk Utility to create a Sparse Disk Image Bundle (turn off backups first!!!) with a capacity of 65GB in HFS Journaled, Case Sensitive...The Image must be named as follows "Full Computer Name_Ethernet MAC Address" (The ethernet MAC address is used even if you plan to solely use wifi for backups). for example, my Sparse Disk Image Bundle name is "Ahmad Atiya's MacBook Pro_00254b9d8f72.sparsebundle" Move this image to your time capsule's main directory (if you didn't create it there to begin with). Go to your Time Machine preferences, turn it on, and set it to use your Time Capsule. It should start using the image you created. If you click "get info" on the disk image, it'll show a capacity of whatever you created.

The mailbox list is divided into categories with headings in caps, such as ON MY MAC. When you hover the cursor over one of those headings (except for MAILBOXES), you should see the word Show or Hide on the right. Click Show. The  MAILBOXES category can't be hidden.
In each category, the mailboxes are arranged in groups, such as Inbox. To the left of each group is a small disclosure triangle. If the triangle points to the right, click it so that it points down.

  • Mavericks Time Machine Server - multiple client backups disappear and merge

    Hi there,
In our environment, which is shop environment where many computers are worked on, we use a Mac Pro with roughly 5TB disk space running Mavericks server. Essentially, we rename the computers to be worked on (in the Sharing pane of System preferences), then use Time Machine to connect and backup using a Sharing Only account that exists on the server. The TM backups are verified using Migration Assistant by opening MA and making sure the option to restore is present, without the 'No Backup Volumes found' message, common with TM backups on the network. All OS's are backing up to our server, the oldest being 10.6 and the newest likely being 10.10 now.
Recently, we have noticed some backups seemingly disappear from the server. Just this morning, I looked at a VERY large sparesbundle and got curious.
Upon launching Migration Assistant and opening that very large sparsebundle, I was able to find all the backups that 'dissappeared'. This is very concerning, as all of these backups were verified using MA immediately after having been created.  Migration Assistant is quit, the system shut down, and the computer's work proceeds.
    A few bits of information:
-Computers sometimes come in to our shop (Apple Authorized) not being able to boot, so their storage volume is booted either via target mode or plugged in to another known good mac via a RocketStor Thunderbolt Dock, or simply directly in to another Mac
-if a computer boots it is backed up natively using it's own OS
-All of this takes place using AFP connections, and over an enterprise network, but devices are all plugged in to the same switch (at this point).
There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the disappearance of the backups, and they are very frustrating to attempt to locate when they 'go missing', especially since these backups are only looked for when a HDD is wiped and data is needed....
Any help is appreciated! As stated earlier, we are an Apple warranty authorized shop in a collegiate environment. Thanks all!
    Best,
    Chris

Is this necessary? It seems to do half the backup without it. If I remember correctly I have indexing turned off not only because I don't use it but also because it was hanging up/using a lot of CPU... If I absolutely must I will turn the indexing back on and wait for it to do its dirty business, but I'm a bit reticent in trading my problem for one that I don't really have an interest in solving.

  • Can I use the Time Capsule as a backup drive and wired network switch? I do not want to use the wireless part as I already have an ADSL 2  Wireless Router for that. Thanks.

    Hi
I just went from PC to MAC. Have a MAC Mini and wanted to get a time capsule for backups. I would like to use it as a wired device instead of wireless. Would me connecting it to my router do the trick? Can I then use the LAN ports in the back of the capsule like I would a network switch? Can I just disable the wireless router part of the capsule as I already have an ADSL2+ Wireless Router.
    Thanks

I wanted to run a cable upstairs from the switch downstairs so the Time capsule becomes my upstairs switch (as I only have Wireless upstairs at the moment. That will work right?
    Cheers.
Yes, that is also fine.. ethernet being the cable you run.. !!
You still don't have to use a TC.. which is still a rather expensive box for the job.. an Airport Extreme would offer the same exactly minus hard disk for cheaper price and more than likely better lifespan.. TC with internal power supply run too hot.

  • Can I use my time capsule as a backup drive and a network share drive?

I just got my wife a Macbook Air and I got a Time Capsule 1tb to back it up. Since the Air has limited storage I thought I could store her media files on there. I can see the Time Capsule in Finder and I can browse to it but I cannot drag and drop anything to it. It says the disk cannot be modified.
I understand that the media would not be backed up but that's OK because I actually have it on another computer also. So basically how can I modify the TC disk so I can use it as a share and a TM disk?
In my Macbook Pro 15inch I have a drive I use for both (USB) and it works great.
    Thanks in advance,

Mixing Time Machine backups and other data on a Time Capsule's internal HD usually leads to trouble. See #Q3 in [Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule|http://web.me.com/pondini/TimeMachine/TimeCapsule.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum) for an explanation and some workarounds.

  • Firefox is saying it is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections and won't allow me access after months of using it. Uninstalling and reinstalling has had no effect. Help!

Recently McAfee recommended I block 'roaming.dwm.exe' which I did. Could that have caused the problem? Since then I have swapped to AVG which found 3 Trojans and removed them, but I still cannot access Firefox. I have checked my Internet Connections settings and nothing is entered there.

    Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Network -> Connection
Try selecting the "No Proxy" setting. If it doesn't work, select "Use System Settings". If this still doesn't solve the problem, leave the setting at "Use System Settings", then check your connection's settings (in Windows, not FF).

  • Can I use the Calendar Server on OS X Server to sync Calendar

    Hello,
I would like to know if I can use OS X Server to sync my calendar and addresses on my different devices (iPhone, iPad and MacBook) like in iCloud, or is this only possible in Workgroups?
Also I wondered if I can connect to my OS X Server shared folder from a differen Network when the server has a WWW Domain name?

It is possible to set up OS X Server with services for calendar and contacts for the users, and when you use the same user login on different devices, the contacts and calendars will update across them (assuming you have network connections to the server and the devices are set to automatically get changes with push notifications). The only issue I've seen with this is when you set up the services on a Mac, you will have the "On My Mac" calendar and contacts group (iCloud does not show this when you set up a device with iCloud as it really is modifying the local copies of the data and pushing changes to the server).
It is possible to connect to shared folders hosted by OS X Server if the server and network are set up correctly. To access it over the internet, you have two options:
Port forward (possibly with NAT translation) AFP or SMB ports through your firewall to your server. This would allow you (from a machine on the internet not on your local network) to access the shared folder in Finder as afp://yourserver.example.com (where yourserver.example.com is your domain name, or in the case of a home server, a dynamic DNS name that updates when your external IP address changes).
Setup VPN on the server and allow VPN services through your firewall. By creating the VPN, you would have access to your network (the one the server is on) like you were locally attached to it and not over the internet (with the exception of Bonjour services. Bonjour broadcasts don't work over VPN).  The VPN (if configured properly) would add another level of encryption to the data transfers (I don't recall off the top of my mind if AFP is encrypted by default). You can also set up DHCP and DNS with a primary zone and add the name of your server (and/or other computers) to this zone and be able to use Bonjour like addresses (like myserver.local).
As to which is 'better,' I would recommend the VPN route as I am cautious opening ports on my router/firewall and would allow access to more than just the one machine.  But in the end it will depend on what you feel like trying (with the help of these forums, other forums, and Google) and how paranoid you are about security.  If you implement the VPN, you could access your shared folders, your contacts and calendars securely from the internet, but you would have to have the VPN enabled to get push notifications/updates.

Luis, you can use the VI Server methods 'Set Control Value' and 'Get Control Value', as demonstrated in the attached examples.

    LincNesh,
Seems the problem has been solved by Peter Rauen.
See this discussion: Mail relay SASL problem / postconf -n
I checked on my server and Peter is right. Although there are configs in /etc/postfix there is another path with postfix conf files: /Library/Server/Mail/Config/postfix

  • Advise on using Branch office server as backup

    Hello and thanks for assistance,
The site in question has four physical servers and two virtual servers. They have the following major functions. Server A is a DC/DNS server as well as hosting DFS files. Server B holds exchange server 2012A and the replica partner for DFS, Server C
has two virtual servers installed. First one is exchange 2012B and second one is the antivirus server. Server D is a DC and a witness server. It also holds WSUS. Backup is taking as long as 12 hours. I had an idea of moving Server C and D offsite and configuring
them as branch office servers using VPN. Then all data including mail will be offsite and eliminate the need for backups. All servers of course have RAID1 so my concern really is not hardware related but disaster recovery in the event of fire, flood, ect.
I know this idea may be full of holes but that is why I am posting this for your opinions. There are about 50 workstations in the network. The client is very dependent on the network.
    Thanks
    Ronald C. Pope

    Hi Ronald,
Of course you can create offsite Exchange server and DC. The connection performance may be an issue as you must use site-to-site VPN incase you need a failover.
Both topics are discussed a lot in Exchange and DC forum:

  • Query used by SQL Server Management Pack for monitoring database backups

I use SCOM 2012 R2 and the SQL Server Management Pack to monitor SQL Server database backups. I believe I am getting false positives. SCOM reports database are not backuped, while in fact they are. So I need to troubleshoot this. I suspect SCOM is querying
the backup history in the msdb database. I want to know which query SCOM uses.
I have tried looking in the monitor's definition but I suspect the query is embedded in the management pack files which are binary. I have also tried running a trace using the SQL Server Profiler on my test environment and overriding the interval to 60 seconds,
but I don't see a relevant query being executed. I also don't see the alert reappear so I suspect SCOM does not honor the interval in a way I would expect.
What query, or other method, does SCOM use to check database backups?
    Thanks in advance.

Thank you both Ivan and Michael,
I only saw your messages by email and didn't see your screen shot before I extracted the query myself. In my own queries I calculate the backup age in hours instead of days because of daily full backups. Perhaps It will be a good idea to create my own monitors
from scratch like I used to do with Nagios.
I will study the vbscripts and might create my own version which allows the query to be entered as an parameter and move all code to a .Net class which can be called from vbscript as an COM object. This way I hope to reduce the vbscript code to an minimum
while keeping the flexibility of the SCOM Operations Console and the robustness of .Net. I suspect I want to make more non standard monitors in the future.

    Arjen

  • Why to use SQL Server's native backup facilities, not other backup solution?

I've been asked in my company: why to use SQL Server’s native backup facilities? Instead, they currently rely on other backup software, like Backup Exec, BrightStor, or even Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager. Those solutions let the
company manage all of its backups—including SQL Server—in a single place, whereas SQL Server’s native backup abilities only apply to SQL Server.
So what does SQL Server native backup facility give us more to be forced to use it?

Satish and Pawan ... thanks but, a backup solution is just there. they don't need to pay anything. even though, having a backup solution that backup everything on the server, like files, software.. etc is needed regardless if you have SQL Server databases
or not, and if it does database backup it would be even better and more complete as a backup solution. So sorry your answer is not an enough reason that will force me to leave that complete backup solution and use the SQL Server backup tools specifically to
    backup databases.
Olaf ... thanks as well. But I was just counting a number of solutions that i think they are related to backup things. yet I believe that Symantec backup exec does backup for SQL Server database, ain't?! what I understood from the link that you gave me,
that some backup applications (if not all) use SQL Server backup facilities to do database backup, is what I understood correct? if yes then the question will be, is there any situation or reasons that force me to use SQL Server backup tools even if I have
those backup solution (that some of them in the backgroud they are using SQL Server backup facilities)? does SQL Server backup tool give me more capabilities in backing up databases than what I find in backup solutions?
The answer is NO, as of now you get all these features in 3rd party native backups...
So in nutshell Microsoft never forces you to use SQL Servers Native backup -----The only reason why you get native backup featues is since SQL Server is an Enterprise Solution MS provide you all features in-built within the bundle so that you don't have
to purchase any other license (incase you\your company doesn't have one already)

  • I'm trying to use Mountain Lion Server so my family can have separate logins via Screen Share to their iTunes.

Using Mountain Lion Server so my family can have separate logins and connect via Screen Share.
Works great, each has their own home directory and permissions are perfect.
Now setting up iTunes for each with their own Library (not shared), thus keeping multiple Libraries.
    I get this;
This Computer is already associated with an Apple ID.
If you download past purchases with your Apple ID, you
cannot auto-download past purchases with a different
    Apple ID for 90 days.
    What!
So what it is on the same computer, they are completely separate Libraries never to be mixed.
If this works, I only need to keep one computer up and running, instead of three.
Each can do their syncing/backup and connect to the various Airplay/AppleTVs I have around the house.
    How do I fix this.
    Thanks

Bottom line is you can't - easily.
You need to make sure that you log out of the server each time otherwise the ID is running. To explain, if you had a laptop with different people using it, your solution works fine. Each time someone logs in, the iTunes ID is different so it works as you can only have one person using the laptop at any one time.
Now, turning your problem inside-out, you want people to be able to log into iTunes concurrently to use their own version of the program with their own library. This does not seem to work and you get the conflicted ID error message. Even though iTunes is running under their own login ident, I have never been able to get this working reliably and was told that iTunes is NOT a network-aware application as it is designed to be single user.
The way I got around this was to login as XYZ and to make sure that the ID was changed in iTunes accordingly. However, it did not always work so I gave up with the whole thing.

  • Can Time Capsule be used as a time machine on a Windows Server.  Is this possible, and how do i configure this?

I like to use the new TC in my office as a time machine on a Windows Server.  Is this possible, and how do i configure this?
In fact my plan is to make the first back up by connecting to the server via an ethernet cable, but thereafter i like to bring the TC to my home and perform the incremental backups over the internet.  This is for safety reasons, in case for example the office is broken into, or flooded, or fire (god forbid).
I sincerely hope it is possible, and not complicated.
Alternatively i would not mind replacing our current Windows server 2003 with an Apple server, but all computers in the network (except mine) are Windows 7 or 8. Would it work?
    Thanks in advance.

I will consider the WD My Cloud device.
It is a NAS.. it is designed to provide a cheap centralised file storage.
    What is NAS?? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network-attached_storage
A file server like windows uses heaps of power to do very little.. in your setup.. In most setups like SBS it will do exchange server and provide a heap of useful connectivity to your clients.
Since you are not using the windows server in anything but simple file serving you can replace with a NAS..
Problem with the TC is, it is a router with a hard disk inside.. designed specifically for Time Machine.. it fails to provide what a NAS does.. easy access to any clients, local or remote.. TC is designed by apple for apple and the rest of world is not really invited to the party.
It provides no backup.. no data protection.. and is so specifically apple orientated I do not think it works at all well with windows.
For a simple example.. windows will have file issues with large files.. because it is only NTserver FAT32 to windows.. bad luck if you have large files.. !!
Plainly if you use active directory in windows that facility is gone.
I just like Apple products, find them more stable than Windows and easier to use.  Plus i can access the server from home if it is an Apple Server.
If you only need remote access for yourself that is fine.. too bad for the windows clients I guess.
Or you open it up to the world and bad luck for security.
Apple do not design for mixed environment.. in fact with the TC there is no provision for windows access officially at all.. so anything you do is a fudge.
You can use the TC for your Mac backups within the network.. that is fine. Apple provide no software at all to help with your windows clients.
