Using SUDO In Terminal - Mavericks

Before Mavericks, I could run an administrative command in Terminal, it would prompt me for a password, I would type the password to my admin account and everything worked fine.
Now, when I run an administrative command, I get prompted for MY password.  I then see the following error message:
Sorry, user " " is not allowed to execute ...
How can I repair this so when I run a command using SUDO, I get prompted for the administrative password again.
I followed the process of enabling the root account and set a password for it, but this is still not working.  Do I need to reboot or something?
Thank you for any help!

Slow boots?  Look for site-local modifications, add-on enhancements and related; at whatever baggage is part of the local startup.   More often than not, there's add-on software that's starting up that's lengthening the boot time.
Look at the boot logs.
Perform a verbose bootstrap.
Figure out what's wrong or come up with a theory, try some specific changes to prove or disprove the theory, reset the changes back if the tests don't work out, and try another change.
Try a clean Mavericks install, and compare how fast that boots.
Look for the usual sorts of hardware bottlenecks, too.  Slow disks.  Insufficient free memory that then forces memory reclamation.  Slow networks.   Slow processors.  Etc.
No-cost short-cuts to better system performance?  Those are really rare.

  • How to launch a finder with password requested, not using  sudo in terminal

    Hi,
I would like to have a finder with password requested in Mac like we move the the driver in /System/Library/extensions folder to trash by command lines.  Using "sudo delete"  in terminal will have the DOS-style and not good-looking for users.  That is, I would like to have the GUI with password by some commands(or scripts) before I removing the driver.
    Thanks for your help.

You shouldn't be doing anything with system files. Those don't belong to you. If you need to install or update software in /Library, create an installer package. It will run as root, after prompting for administrator credentials.

  • How do I go about blocking websites using Sudo in Terminal?

Nobody in the Kenwood Towne Center locations seems to know how or they are to scared. I came here so that if anything went wrong they would be the ones responsible & it under warranty not me.

    AugustusPrimus wrote:
What I want to do is completly block inappropriate websites for example playboy to name one of the hundreds if not thousands of pornagraphic websites that a curious teenager would adventure to.
I answered your original question, however since adult content websites number in the hundreds of thousands, new ones created everyday, it would be unrealistic to use the hosts file for this.
My list is only 16,000 and generated by thousands of IT workers, the amount of adult content online is well in excess of being managed except by a population of say New York City working on it 24/7 to get it all catagorized.
If you subscribe to OpenDNS, they do have a decent adult content filtering system, but it's not perfect at all as I tried it, it does a good job of blocking a lot of accidential visits to major known sites, but not if one is smart, learns the bypass trick from a friend or/and their intent is to find that material as it's everywhere.
OpenDNS may slow down your downloads of Apple/Akamai based content which uses the closet ISP server to download to you.
You need to check your location that OpenDNS has a server near your location or experience slow or problematic downloads.
You can search Wikipedia for OpenDNS, their server locations are there, if your ISP server is very near the same city, then you should't experience a delay in downloading from Apple/Akamai servers.
If I'm talking too geek speak, then just copy my post for later and likely it will make sense if you run into a problem.

  • I was using sudo and it wouldnet let me type pass word so i quit terminal.  And know terminal wont work

Now  it dosent say blah blah blah macbook pro and it wont open any commands

Exactly what do you mean it wouldn't allow you to type in your password?
If you mean it did not show up as you typed it that is the way it works. It never shows any characters, no stars or letters or anything, when you are typing it in. you just type it in and hit enter. If the command works you are back at your username$
If it doesn't for any reason it will post an error.
when you say terminal doesn't work that may be because you never really closed terminal. You just closed the window terminal was using. Enter terminal and if its name is in the menu bar it is active. Go to Shell, New Window, Basic.
Does a new terminal window open?

  • TERMINFO environment dropped when using sudo -E or sudioedit

    Hey guys,
I use the termite terminal which uses the termcap file 'xterm-termite'. Since this is non-standard I have to copy over the termcap file to remote machines I commonly work on. I put this file in `$HOME/.local/share/terminfo/x/xterm-termite` and set my $TERMINFO environment variable to `$HOME/.local/share/terminfo`.
When I use sudo -E or sudoedit it looks like the TERMINFO environment variable is getting lost. So vim won't display things properly (no colors) and other silly problems (LESS 'Warning terminal is not fully functional").
Why does the TERMINFO get dropped when my other environment variables stick around?
Edit: Looking at the TROUBLESHOOTING document, I see that TERMINFO is removed "to guard against shared library spoofing, shell voodoo, and kerberos server spoofing."
What are my options? I would really rather not copy my termcap file into /usr/share/terminfo since I might not always have root access on my remote machines.
Edit 2: I feel a little silly. I just said I may not have root access. But if I'm using sudo it's almost guaranteed for root access! I'll leave this thread open for other solutions though.

Per chance are each of your IP phones wireless portable phones? Do they happen to operate in the 2.4 GHz band? If so, this would be the reason for the drop-offs. Also, I'm not sure why, if true, this would not affect your Mac ... unless it is connected by Ethernet.

  • Why wont dns flush in mac os 10.6.8 using sudo dscacheutil -flushcache

Use the following Terminal command to reset the DNS cache I put in sudo dscacheutil -flushcache and clicked return
it asks for the password then enter it tells me
    sudo: dscasheutil: command not found
    What am I doing wrong?
My email provider changed servers and now 2 of my macs can not get to the new dns.

I have a 2008 Macbook Pro and my device is doing the same. You would think with the high prices the consumers pay for these prducts, the least that can be done is Apple fixing this ****. This has been an ongoing ordeal for me since ab out mid October of last year. Firewall on, firewall off, it doesn't matter. The **** won't work. Tsk tsk tsk apple.

  • Use sudo language setup but not all changed

i activated macbook pro with Arabic, then i changed to english and used "sudo language setup" but still a few titles not changed
in finder like: documents, downloads, tags, all still in Arabic.
i updated to yosmite but still same thing

I wonder if you login as a different user (if none exist create a test user in the System Preferences "Users & Groups" pane) if the problem then goes away. If so I would guess one of the preferences pertaining to the language setup has become corrupted in some way. If this simple test doesn't have the same problem, try renaming the .GlobalPreferences.plist file in /Users/yourusernamewithlanguageproblem/Library/Preferences to something else and then logout and login again (you might even need to reboot). If the problem goes away, you know the source of the problem. There are a lot of other things in this .GlobalPreferences.plist file other than the languages and default language.
If changing the name of this .GlobalPreferences.plist file does work, then you have the cause of the problem identified. You then might want to try editing it with a Plist editor application and see if you can find exactly which of them are corrupted. I believe the key that contains the languages supported and the default language is called "AppleLanguages" and the default language is always element 0 in that array.
If you're not comfortable with doing this (need to know how to use the command line in a Terminal.app window), then say so and I can give a bit more detail.
    Good luck...

iPhoto is appearing as free on MAC store and it is also featured as one of the top 10 free apps, when i downloaded it, my credit card got charged for 790 rupees. I am using the latest OSX Maverick.

And yet to download the app you clicked on a button that told you that the app would be 790 rupees for you.
The iLife apps and the iWork apps are only free when you qualify to get them free. And when you get them free the buy button to download them says free. When the buy button has a price on it, that is how much you will pay for the app.

  • When I check my boot SSD drive using Disk Utility under Mavericks, I often get "Incorrect number of extended attributes" errors.  But if I boot off an external drive and check the same SSD, no errors are reported.  Is this a bug in Mavericks?

When I check my boot SSD drive using Disk Utility under Mavericks, I often get "Incorrect number of extended attributes" errors.  But if I boot off an external drive and check the same SSD, no errors are reported.
This happens not just with the SSD in my Mac Mini, but with another SSD in my MacBook (both now running Mavericks).  So far as I know, all of the kit I am using is in good order (despite the file corruption reports).  So I am beginning to wonder if it could be due to a bug in Mavericks?  Both SSD drives have been formatted to MacOS Extended (journaled) format.  Should I have used a different format, I wonder?
Has anyone else encountered this issue?
    Does anyone have a solution?
Or an explanation that might help my investigation of the issue?
    Thanks guys,

I understand that the Corsair Force 3 is not one of the SSD drives that are supported on Apple Macs.
I did try downloading and using Trim Enabler, but the error message came up both when it was off and when it was on.
I understand that not everyone thinks Trim Enabler is a good program, though there is a new version out now, so I may give it another try.

  • [SOLVED] Unable to use SUDO: issues with /etc/sudoers

I have reinstalled Arch_64 and I have run into some problems with SUDO.
I get the following errors when I try to use sudo:
sudo : unable to stat /etc/sudoers : Permission Denied
sudo : no valid sudoers sources found, quitting
sudo : unable to initialize policy plugin
Here's what I have done with it so far:
    * I added USERNAME (myself) to the 'wheel' group
    * I uncommented %wheel ALL=(ALL) All using visudo
As it was not working for me I also:
    * # chown -c root:root /etc/sudoers
    * # chmod -c 0440 /etc/sudoers
    * Since that too did not work, I recommented %wheel and added USERNAME ALL=(ALL) ALL just under the line root ALL=(ALL) ALL and repeated the above steps. The above problem persists.
    * I checked with visudo -c and it says "/etc/sudoers parsed ok".
I have been through the WIKI and the forums but still unable to figure out whats going wrong.
I will appreciate if the forum can guide me to solution and help me resolve this issue.
    Thanks.

Had exactly the same problem with a new Arch_64 install a few months ago, which turned out to be a problem with permissions on / (which i changed with chmod) - can't remember the details, but it was this post that put me on to a solution:

What version of Microsoft Office Mac are you running?  You probably just need to update it to the latest release:

Office 2011 Mac's latest version is 14.3.8 for instance.

  • The font "Georgia" appears blurred and the pixel fonts I regularly view and use (such as Terminal and Silkscreen) do not appear properly.

So in a few of the websites I use (namely livejournal and dreamwidth), I always use georgia and either terminal or silkscreen for an account layout, but ever since upgrading the 19.0 beta, georgia looks readable but blurry while every word styled in terminal or silkscreen appears as a sans-serif font. Is there a way to go around this? Something in the encoding used?

The terminal font is probably a bitmap (raster) font and Firefox no longer supports such fonts, so you won't see them.
The Silkscreen font is available as a true type version and should work in Firefox.

Such pixel (bitmap) fonts only look good in their native resolution, so make sure that you aren't zooming web pages.
Reset the page zoom on pages that cause problems.

how to use IIFL trade terminal on Mac book air

If you are referring to downloading and installing https://ttweb.indiainfoline.com/trade/Downloads.aspx it appears that is a Windows program and (only a quick look) I don't see that they offer a Mac version. To install a Windows program on a Mac you would first need to buy and install a copy of Windows (e.g. Windows 8). You would install Windows via Bootcamp Boot Camp 5.1: Frequently asked questions - Apple Support or via 3rd party software such as http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/

I always run a Time Machine backup before updating anything and recommend you run a backup as well. Paid apps should migrate over without any problem. If you have problems with VPP codes not transfering over properly, you can talk to your Apple SE or contact VPP for Education support and they can help you. While I haven't experienced any problems with updating, its never a guarantee that others will have the same experience.
