Using tcp/ip to communicate through a wireless network

Hi !
I have established a wireless network between two
computers using two usb wireless adapters and I want to send messages
between the two computers using labview. From what I have been told ,
tcp/ip vi's should do. But i have tried them and they are not working.
Can anybody please tell me how should i go about it? ( I used simple
data server and simple data client vi's from the examples in Labview)
Plz help

I have turned off the firewall and I also replaced the 'localhost' string with the IP of the server in the example but it gave generic error in tcp open connection. I also entered the name of the server computer in place of localhost and then it didn't show any error but connection just timed out.
Basically I haven't been able to ping from one pc to another. Can you pls tell me a way to ping from one pc to another or to find out whether labview is detecting the wireless network or not?
Well if you can't ping then the network setup itself is seriously misconfigured. ping tests about the lowest level of IP network communication and if that doesn't work you should first try to find the configuration problem before even attempting to debug TCP/IP or UDP or other higher level protocols.
LabVIEW does not detect any network interface at all. It just uses the system network services and they need to be setup correctly in order for network traffic to work at all. Since your firewall is already disabled I would suspect network address configuration problems. Without specific routers the IP addresses of both computers need to be in the same subnet and both computers need to be configured to use the same subnet range too.

Well, you could install the drivers to the wireless printer in you other computers.

When I try to install my Brother MFC-8810DW printer through a wireless network I get error:-30886.  The computer recognizes the printer, and asks me to identify the software, but I get the same error message repeatedly.

That file might have moved to a different location on the server. I think you'll need to check with RefWorks support or your local IT department on why the install page links do not work.

  • How do i use the airport extreme to extend my wireless network

How do i connected my airport extreme up to my existing network so that it can extend my wireless through out the house ??
Can it be done wirelessly or do i need an ethernet cable thats about 10m ?
    Keith

The AirPort Exteme can "extend" your existing wireless network (using wireless only) if it is being provided by another Apple router.
If your current main router is not an Apple product, then you will need to plan to connect the AirPort Extreme to your router using an Ethernet cable.
Post back for more information if needed.

  • How to use Airport Extreme to create a second wireless network with different IP addresses behind an existing modem/router?

    Hi,
I have an existing modem/router from my ISP that does DHCP and NAT with base IP 192.168.1.1 distributed in the wireless network. I use this wireless network for our private devices. I could turn off the DHCP server in this first router, but there isn't a separate setting to turn off NAT.
I want to connect my Airport Extreme (4th gen) to this existing router to create a separate wireless network for visiting guests, where IP addresses of 10.0.0.0 etc. are used. So I do not want to use the Airport Extreme in bridge mode, as I would like to keep the devices on the first network 'invisible' for those on the second network. (P.S. when connected in bridge mode, the Airport works well and can distribute a network with a different name from the first. It's just that I would feel more comfortable about our privacy if the Airport were to distribute a different IP range. False security, maybe?)
I've tried doing this by 'Sharing a public IP address' in Airport Utility's Internet tab, leaving TCP/IP's setting to 'via DHCP', setting DHCP addresses to start with 10.0.0.2 up to 200 with all else blank, and not using a standard host nor NAT-PMP in the NAT tab.
When I do this the Airport complains of a 'double NAT issue'. Internet connectivity seems to be OK, but when switching between the two networks on my Mac I get complaints about my IP address being in use by another device intermittently.
Can anyone help in how to get the 'double NAT issue' resolved?
    Thanks!

So if someone is connected to the modem/router network they will be able to see the HD I will have put in to the AirPort Extreme?
As I said above.....since the modem/router and AirPort are bridged, devices on the modem/router wireless will be able to "see" devices on the AirPort wireless, and vice versa.....
If they can see the HD connected to the AirPort Extreme, will they be able to access it
Yes, unless you plan to password protect the drive connected to the AirPort Extreme.
or will they still need the password needed to get onto the AirPort Extreme network?
The modem/router and AirPort Extreme are bridged. They are on the same network. All devices are on the same network when the modem/router and AirPort are bridged. Not sure how else that I can say this.
Also, because it is bridged, I shouldn't have any problems accessing the HD I will have connected to the AirPort Extreme from an external location?
Accessing devices from a remote location is never easy....and a topic for a different post/discussion. If you have a "static" Internet IP address from your provider, and have all the details on how to forward ports on your modem/router, you are off to a good start.
Apparently there is some addressing issues because devices can be seen as "Double IP" because the modem/router would have allocated IP's as well as the AirPort allocating IP's thus making connections slower until resolved
When you "bridge", all IP addresses are issued by one device. There will be no conflicts on the network, since they are bridged.
Once again, in very simple terms, you have two doors (access points) that open into the same room (network).  One "door" is the modem/router and the other "door" is the AirPort Extreme. They are on the same network....("room") because they are bridged.

  • Using airport express for itunes and another wireless network for internet

Is there any way i can use my airport express just for playin music through airtunes, and log onto the internet using a different wireless network?

Hello bleno567. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Is there any way i can use my airport express just for playin music through airtunes, and log onto the internet using a different wireless network?
Yes, you just need to configure the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), that will be used to stream iTunes, as a wireless client.

  • Messaging through the wireless network

I have a PowerMac G5, two MacBooks, and a PC based laptop all on my Airport Extreme wireless network. They are fully connected, sharing internet, a central printer, and I can move files between my computers. Is it possible to send some type of instant message, or any signal to other computers while they are on the network? All Macs are using OS X 10.4.6. We can message using various internet programs, but I would perfer to message through OS X if possible.
    Bill

As Duane mentions, you can use iChat. iChat features the Bonjour chat client that will allow you to chat on your own network.
You can also find a Bonjour chat client for windows here: http://xurble.org/projects/iChatMiranda
I hope this is what you were looking for!

  • HT5022 How do i use my airport extreme to extend my wireless network, or make the signal stronger

I have a wireless modem/router and want to use my airport extreme to strengthen the signal throughout my house...how do i do that?

Plan to establish a permanent Ethernet cable connection from one of the available LAN <-> ports on your modem/router to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Extreme. Locate the AirPort Exteme in a central location in the general area where more wireless coverage is desired.
Configure the AirPort Extreme using AirPort Utility to "create" a wireless network using the exact same wireless network name, same exact wireless security settings and same exact password that your modem/router uses.
Finally, the Extreme must be configured in Bridge Mode to operate correctly with the modem/router.
To get everything in the proper sequence on the network....once the Extreme is configured, power off the entire network for a few minutes. Then start the modem/router first and let it run a minute by itself. Then start the Exteme next the same way. Continue starting devices the same way until the entire network is back up.

  • Can I use a Time Capsule to extend my wireless network.

Hi, I have just bought a 3TB time capsule as my old (flat style) 500GB TC is reaching full capacity. The old style TC will then be surplus to requirements as a data storage unit, at least for myself, though it might be useful for my son to use as his Time Capsule.
Ideally, as we have a wireless 'blind spot' out in the rear extension of the house, it would be useful to use the unit to extend my wireless network (and also use it as a separate TC if possible). Is this possible? If it is how would I go about it?
    Hope someone can help . . . .
    Cheers
    John

Is it possible for you to consider connecting the Time Capsules together using a wired Ethernet connection?
Here is what Apple has to say in their support document about extending:
Adding Wi-Fi base stations when it is unnecessary can reduce Wi-Fi throughput because the Wi-Fi network will require more data management overhead. The network configuration also becomes more complex. In the case of a wirelessly extended network, throughput may be reduced to less than 60 percent of that of a single device. The general rule is to keep the Wi-Fi network as simple as possible. You can accomplish this by using the minimum number of Wi-Fi base stations required to service the physical network area and by using Ethernet wherever possible.
Extending the range of your Wi-Fi network by connecting Wi-Fi base stations together using Ethernet is always the best option, and will provide the best throughput.

  • How can I use an airport extreme to extend my wireless network?

I have a Verizon FIOs router with both wireless and ethernet capability. I also have an airport extreme base station, which is currently connected to the Verizon router by Ethernet and provides wireless to a MacBook in a distant room upstairs. Practically, I have two wireless network now. I have two G4 Sawtooth, which do not have wireless PCI card and require ethernet connection for internet. One of them is in the upstairs study room and connected to the Verizon wireless router by Ethernet. The other is in an downstairs room has not wireless connection.
Can I relocate the airport base station to downstairs and connect it to the Sawtooth there for receiving wireless from the Verizon router and broadcast further to its wireless network? If so, how do I set up the airport station downstairst? If not, I know that I have get a PCI wifi for the Sawtooth downstairs.
    Your advice is greatly appreciated.
    Robert

Can I relocate the airport base station to downstairs and connect it to the Sawtooth there for receiving wireless from the Verizon router and broadcast further to its wireless network?
Sorry but no the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) will not wirelessly connect to the network provided by the Verizon FiOS router.
What you could do is get another AEBS, an AX, or a Time Capsule and place that downstairs. Then use that device to wirelessly connect to the wireless network provided by your current AEBS. If your current AEBS is not 802.11n capable then you would need to use WDS to make this happen. One bad thing about WDS is that each WDS link cuts your affective wireless bandwidth in half.

  • Can I use my airport express to extend a wireless network with a non-apple router?

I have been trying to extend my wireless network in my house.  Right now I have a dsl modem/router provided by Century Link and an older AirPort express (not sure how old but it uses AirPort utility v5.6).  I want to be able to share my printer and use AirTunes.  Currently I have the AirPort plugged into the router and setup to create a new wireless network.  I would like to combine them so I don't have to switch between to print and play music.  I am not really sure where to start or if it even possible.  Any info would be great!

If you keep the Express connected using Ethernet and configure the Express to "Create a wireless network" using exactly the same wireless network name, exact same wireless security and same wireless password as the Century Link network.....everything will behave as one "big" network, and you will have additional wireless coverage near the Express.
If you do not need extra wireless coverage, you can turn off the wireless on the Express.
The Express must be in Bridge Mode.
Most users know the name of their wireless network and password, so the really tricky part of doing this is that you must know exactly what type of wireless security settings the Century Link router is using....and then match up the same settings on the AirPort Express.
If the settings do not match up exactly, then you wind up with two separate networks that will each require their own log on.
If you can check the setting for wireless security on the Century Link router and provide that information to us, we can tell you how to set things up the way that you would like.

  • How can I use an Airport Express to join my wireless network and provide an internet signal to my Power Mac g5 via an ethernet cable?

I have a power mac g5 that does not have a wireless card, and connects to the internet via ethernet cable.
I want to know how to set up an airport express so that it joins my wireless home network and provides the G5 with an internet signal.
This via an ethernet cable that is plugged  into the airport express and then into the ethernet port on the g5.
Please advise as I have configured the airport express in every way possible, the green light is on and when I plug the ethernet cable into the G5 my network cofigurations shows nothing and says that the ethernet cable is not plugged in (It is).
I get an internet signal if the ethernet cable is plugged directly into my wireless router, so the ethernet port works.
    Please assist. Thanks.

Two requirements that must be met to do what you want.......
    1) An AirPort Express 802.11n must be used. Check the Model No on the label on the side of the Express. It needs to be A1264. Any other model number will not do what you want.
    2) The Express must be configured to "Join a wireless network" and the option to enable Ethernet Clients must be checked.
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
The box to "Allow Ethernet Clients" must be checked
Please check to verify that your AirPort Express meets both requirements

  • I was on a trip and downloaded some tunes on my notebook.  i then wanted to sync them to my Imac at home, but can nnot find a cable hook up ..nor can i seem to do it through the wireless network...how can I sync from the notebook itunes with the imac at h

I was on a trip and I downloaded some tunes on my notebook.
At home now, and I am trying to sync the notebook itunes new songs to my Imac, so I do not have to open both computers in the 'shared library' section every time I want to hear a song that I bought last week on the notebook.  I simply want to dump my new tunes on my imac and play them from there.  Is there a cable I am missing, how do I connect both computers?
I can not imagine a world where I can buy the music on the notebook, but I can not transfer it on my Imac???!!!
    Suggestions please!
    Thanks everyone,
    Adie Elliott

There are several ways. iCloud is partially live, at least in the US, so if you are in the US and have the latest version of iTunes on your home computer, start up iTunes, click on the Store button in the list on the left side of the screen, and on the right side of the iTunes store screen look for Purchased (there will be an orange New! tag next to it). You can (re)download any songs you've bought from your account on any authorized device you own. IOW, buy with your iPad, download later with your iMac if you don't feel like syncing with your iPad.
If you have a wireless network at home you can using filesharing to connect the two computers and copy the songs from the notebook to the desktop. My wife has a corporate DropBox account and she just copies her new songs into the DropBox and grabs them when she's at home. I have a history of forgetting that I've downloaded songs on my notebook or at work so I always immediately copy them to my flash drive. So there you go - lots of ways to do what you want.

  • Can I use airport express to create a local wireless network that my apple tv can connect to for AirPlay/mirroring in student halls/dorm without Internet connection

    Hi I was wondering :
Would I be able to make a local wireless network using airport express that my apple tv can connect to which in turn is connected to a projector with hdmi in so that I can mirror/AirPlay from iPhone pad and mac

will the Airport Express allow you to log onto a hotel wireless network, and broadcast a secure wireless network in your room for your wireless devices, like the Ipad, Iphone, etc.?
The bottom line with a single AirPort Express is no.
The AirPort Express can only "extend" a wireless network when the network is being provided by another Apple router.
As you might imagine, it is extremely unlikely that that the hotel network....which no doubt uses professional wireless access points provided by a manufacturer of commercial systems.....would be compatible with an AirPort Express.
In many years of travel domestically and internationally, I cannot recall a time when a single AirPort Express would "extend" the signal provided by a hotel's wireless network.
However, if you had two AirPort Express devices handy, you might be able to configure one to "join" the hotel network and provide an Ethernet signal to the second AirPort Express, which would be configured to "create" your own "private"  wireless network.

  • Using laptop on separate home and office wireless networks

I have a laptop the connects (wireless) to my home router and my other home computers. At work we have a wireless router (both home and office are linksys wrt54g's). I can connect to the router at work, get to the internet, but can't "see" the other PCs at work.
Is there a good reference to trouble shoot the various settings for the routers, Windows XP, firewalls, Symantic, McAfee, and so on? I have administration privileges on all the systems and routers, but can't seem to get the settings right. BTW both routers are hardwired to PCs that use the same version of McAfee's security programs - my laptop uses Symantic security programs
    Thanks.

If you intend using your portable Mac in a variety of different environments then I recommend you create a series of Locations and then switch between them as required. Keep Automatic for your most used network such as your home or office and then create additional ones for say, wireless networks on the road, an internet connection via your mobile phone and so on.
I am getting confused though, you say
'Actually, even if I boot to the login screen, I will see the G4 appear and can start transferring files, but after 10 -15 minutes, it disappears.'
From what you said earlier in this thread I thought you meant that the G4 laptop would either be visible or not to the other Macs when you join one of your networks not that it is visible for a while then drops off the network. Which is it please?
If it is the latter then check in System Preferences/Energy Saver to see if 'Put the hard disk(s) to sleep ...' is ticked and if it is untick it. You might also want to extend the time for 'Put the computer to sleep ....' to see if that makes a difference.
