Using UMA on PAYG

Hello all,
New here, and hello to everyone.
I live in the UK, and use an Orange PAYG phone (5200). Where I live has a very poor signal (all networks are very poor here).
I have read all about UMA and the 6301, and I understand that if I were to buy one of these off Orange on contract, I could connect to my wifi via UMA to make and receive calls/texts at home (at no extra costs). Is this right?
However, I have no need for a contract phone as I make very few calls so I'm happy on PAYG.
The main question I have this is: could I buy a 6301 off eBay (locked to Orange or unlocked: does it matter?) and stick my Orange PAYG SIM from my 5200 in it, and use it at home, via UMA?
I've serached this forum, and the internet at large, and I can't find an answer to this question so it would be great if anyone could help!
Thanks!
PS: I'm not very techy, so please don't blind me with science!

Thanks for the reply.
If I'm reading that link right, it is talking about VoIP, which is totally different to UMA.
Here is the 6301 UMA on the Orange webiste:

I just want to know if I can get the same functions (ie: UMA) if I use the 6301 with a PAYG SIM in it.

If I buy a Sim free iPhone in the UK will I be abel to use it on PAYG in Australia? Or will in need jailbreaking? And what does this even mean?!
Also, I'll still have a UK SIM (vodafone) that I'll want to check from time to time - will this work?
    thanks

The iPhone4 and 4S use a microsim about half the size of the normal sim
You would have to get replacements for your old sims to use a iPhone4/4S
and no unlocked is unlocked will work anywhere with a GSM sim
people use jailbreaking to get round not having an unlocked iPhone
Go to an UK Apple Store
you can reserve the night before online so you don't have a wasted journey
    http://www.apple.com/uk/retail/iphone/
UK Apple stores only sell unlocked iPhones
They will sell you one with a contract but you will have to go through a contract sign up process etc etc so there is no scope for error

  • How to tell if my laptop integrated graphics uses UMA or discrete memory?

    Hello,
I'm looking to buy a replacement heatsink/fan assembly for my DV6-6117DX laptop as the ball bearing on my fan is dieing. Using the service manual I've narrowed it down to two parts:
650848-001 (For use only with computer models equipped with an AMD A8, A6, or A4 processor and a graphics subsystem with discrete memory)
650847-001 (For use only with computer models equipped with an AMD A8, A6, or A4 processor and a graphics subsystem with UMA memory)
I'm just not sure whether my laptop's integrated graphics uses discrete memory or UMA memory. The processor is an AMD Quad-Core A8-3500M with integrated AMD Radeon HD 6620G Discrete-Class Graphics. This is copied from the HP specs page. Does the "discrete-class graphics" imply that it uses discrete memory?
    Thanks for any help!

In my original post, I've already narrowed it down to one of two parts. My CPU is the AMD A8, my GPU is the AMD 6620G. I just don't know how to tell if my graphics use discrete memory or UMA memory, which will decide between the two heatsink/fan parts.
Put this way if you have AMD video that is the discrete video and you most likely can't upgrade that video if that what your thinking of doing. It should have 1-2gigs of Video RAM that what it usualy comes with but that doesn't qualify it for a Gaming laptop if that is what your looking do to. Gaming laptops cost upwards to 2000US for decent game play and those Video are the higher end video chipset. And if you want to know if you have shared memory with the video look at your UEFI or Bios and look for shared video memory and you will have more insight into the video itself.

  • Roaming on PAYG....

I'm looking at getting a PAYG 3g iPhone. I'm in the UK... what happens if I want to use it for emergencies in a foreign country? My current phone is unlocked so i use a local PAYG SIM so its all as cheap as chips.
    Cheers

Yup, they don't make it easy! but it appears that unless the call is from an E.U country where the service providers are 'capped by law' then its over 2 quid a minute =8O for using a PAYG iPhone (or any o2 mobile!) in a foreign country.
I need to factor all this into the decision because as has already been pointed out iPhones aren't unlocked which would add significant extra costs over my current Samsung solution for no(?) apparent benefit to me other than making *** and o2 loadsa money.

  • Does my Laptop have Discrete or UMA Memory?

    Hello there...
After about 14 months the laptop my mother purchased for me for my 2nd year of Grad School has experienced its first major issue as the cooling fan is malfunctioning. At start up before the OS boots it tells me the fan is malfunctioning and therefore it wont boot unless I tell it too.
So I want to purchase a replacement fan so I can take it to the local repair shop and get it fixed.  I believe that I've found the two potential options for fans as well. However, according to the manual the part is dependent upon whether the" computer model is equipped with an Intel processor and a graphics subsystem with UMA memory or discrete memory". Unfortunately I have no idea what this means at all...
    This is the laptop...

  • Web Surfing using Nokia 6086

    Hi
I have just bought an old Nokia 6086 to allow me to test my web sites on a low spec phone without having to pay for mobile GPRS connections. I assumed that once I had connected to my wireless network and authenticated I would be able to surf the web through this but I can't get the phone to use this connection.
Is there something I am missing or have I just bought an expensive doorstop?
    please help
    Mark

The 6086 is an UMA phone, i.e. the WiFi in it can be used only to that purpose. To use UMA you need to have the UMA service enabled from your carrier. If you are looking for some cheap low end phone with WiFi for pure internet surfing etc. then perhaps the Nokia 6300i could be your pick ? (its not UMA)

  • UMA off but Data on? How?

I get horrible GSm reception in my office, we have a router that UMA works with but we have been asked to restrict our router use to email and other low bandwidth data only.  Is is possible to set up the 8900 to not use UMA on the router but still work with data on wifi (and ever better to go to GSM for voice at the same time?)  I am on T-Mobile.
    thanks

Hi and welcome to the BlackBerry Forums
Sorry, you can't but if you are under UMA, you can use the Carrier Network to answer the phone, but for default if you have poor reception the device connect automatically to the UMA network.
If I help you with any inquire, thank you for click kudos in my post.

  • UMA for iPhone

Does anyone know if there is a way to use UMA on the iPhone 3GS?

    Not at this time.

  • Uma or signal boost

does anyone on here know anything about uma? phone model is E5, on orange. can"t get this to work, told by orange that my router is the problem. any ideas?? uma is supposed to boost your signal through your  home wi-fi

UMA doesn't boost the signal per se, but totally switches the voice features from a GSM wireless connection to WiFi.  Kind of like Skype, except that the party you're calling sees the call as coming from your usual wireless number, and all other wireless features should continue working.  If your phone supports UMA, you will probably find a WiFi Calling app somewhere on the phone, maybe in Control Panel -> Connectivity.  You should also find an entry for GAN (a synonym for UMA) in Settings -> Connection -> Destinations.
I have never actually used UMA on my E73 (no need for it, as the signal is strong here), but see here for setup tips: http://blog.wapreview.com/?p=7626&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+WapRevi... .  If you already knew everything above and your router is the problem, I assume Orange is suggesting that it's blocking certain outbound traffic?  In that case they should be able to tell you which ports to open.  I hope that helps.

  • First BB and First forum post for Help - UMA on the 8900 - Orange UK

    Help!!!
This is my first BB and my first post on a forum.
I got my first BB about 5 weeks ago.  Loving it.
I got the phone and connected to my home Wi-Fi straight away and the was able to connect using UMA, calls, txt etc.
Today, all of a sudden it will not use UMA, this is a big problem for me as where I live there is terrible network coverage.  The Wi-Fi signal is good, there is a broadband connection, my BB has connected to the Wi-Fi and using the browser it is connected to the Web.
I'm on Orange UK - using BT HomeHub for the Wi-Fi.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I should have read the other posts about this problem sooner!!
I'm now back and working on UMA.
Anyone else who has this problem (with common factors), simply turn off, remove battery, turn back on and reconnect with your Wi-fi ( deleting your previous Wifi profile will not hurt!!!) and it should work ok.  It did for me.
    Good luck.

  • BTHH 3.0 and Blackberry UMA Technology

There seems to be a big difference in HH 2.0 and HH 3.0 in that the 3.0 doesnt support UMA. I specifically got a Blackberry Curve 8520 to use the UMA technology to boost my mobile signal at home as poor once inside house. all was great on the HH 2.0 and any other router my friends and family had.
then along came the HH 3.0 and i have tried everything but it will not let my Blackberry connect let alone use UMA
has anyone else experinced this? found a fix? got a response from an official?

Don't know if I can help.....my daughter has a Blackberry and connects to the Hub 3 with no problem.....however my wireless security key is my own and not the one supplied by the BT.
Whilst I haven't changed the security key from the default wpa/wpa2 you could try changing that to wpa.
This is all a shot in the dark but perhaps worth a try.....she's at work at present...but I'll find out what Blackberry model whe she comes home. We're all vodafone, but I have a sure signal because the signal at home is very poor.

  • Wi-Fi or Network Connection - Explaination for Newbies (Like me)

Myself and my wife Marlene have recently been converted to the BB World. We both bought 8900 Curves, on the same day, and both with BB data plans and Internet browsing plans included. The only difference between the two handsets is mine is from Orange-UK and Marlene's is from O2-UK.
When I got home I set them both up (why is it always me who has to get them working), and connected them to our Home Wireless Network. Now, here is where things went strange. When I went into Mobile Network Options I got a choice of "Preferred Connection", and had 4 choices (Network Only - Network Preferred - Wi-Fi Only - Wi-Fi Preferred) and chose Wi-Fi Preferred as my "unlimited" plan is actually capped at 500MB. When I went to do the same with Marlene's there was no such choice.
Now, being from an Engineering background I could not let this rest, as everytime I was in range of a Wi-Fi network my BB would connect and UMA would show in the top corner. With Marlene's, no connection, and EDGE in top corner. Well, to cut a long story short I managed to get in contact with someone from RIM, and after a time of complete bafflement (is that a word?) he came up with the answer, which I quote:
TerrySorry for the delay in replying. I wanted to be sure that my understand was correct before responding. O2 use the standard Wifi capability whilst Orange use UMA Wifi in their devices. This is a device feature and not software. There is a feature in UMA Wifi: •          Auto-handover (2G/3G ó WiFi) for BlackBerry data serviceØ       BlackBerry always chooses WiFi network when it is availableSo if you have an O2 device it will always attached to the Cellular network first unless you have it switch off and have the appropriate profiles for the local Wifi network.
So there you have it. The system is set by your provider, and there is little you can do about it.
If you are going on a PAYG Data Plan with a provider it may be worth checking which system they use. It could save you alot of money in the long run.
Sorry for the long story, but it seems a popular topic, and hopefully this will go some way to explaining why it is happening on your BB.
    Terry

You must have the Data Plan for certain functions (push email and RIM applications like Facebook, the browser, etc.)
You can use your HotSpot browser on WiFi without the Data Plan (Options > Advanced > Browser > HotSpot browser and save).

  • E7 restarts seem to be caused by T-Mobile/Orange r...

So, I got my Blue E7 from Nokia Direct on Friday last week, on a T-Mobile contract.  As I got it set up as I liked I noticed that the phone would occasionally restart itself.  Initially I put this down to trying to do too much all at the same time, but it even started happening as I moved between rooms in the house when I wasn't doing anything at all, and also when I was driving and only using the satnav facilities.  In order to try and isolate the problem I tried reinstalling PR1.1 via Ovi Suite and then did full factory settings reset (wipe all), with the intention of only installing one piece of software at a time to isolate the problem, but it appeared almost straight away.
[as an aside, if you ever, press the menu key straight after booting it's quite interesting to see how many apps start (showing the little circle) and close immediately after boot - on S60 models you could see all these by holding down the menu key, but on Symbian^3 they don't show up in the "Open applications" screen]
I was lost for a solution, checked all settings, tried all sorts of other avenues and was beginning to think my phone might just be from a bad batch.  Then I thought that the connection between the situations might be related to the roaming arrangement between T-Mobile and Orange.  If you have *no* signal on the T-Mobile network then the SIM is allowed to roam onto the Orange network - note that it isn't seamless roaming like some other operators do (Three/Orange I think?) - it's the same roaming that you do when you go abroad - apparently seamless roaming may come later in the year.  Now in my house I have very patchy T-Mobile coverage, so if I move around the house it will often lose signal and try Orange instead, and the part of Devon I was driving around also has patchy T-Mobile reception, so the same would have been happening.
To test my theory, this morning I set the "Operator Selection" in "Network Settings" to "Manual" and chose T-Mobile as the operator, and so far I have had no further problems at all with the phone rebooting, so it looks like the roaming between networks cold well have been causing the problem.  I will give it a few more days to see if the rebooting has definitely stopped, and if it has then I will know for sure that the roaming was the issue.
To be honest, in the normal roaming situation it probably makes sense for the phone to reboot, but not if I am just moving around my house!  And if T-Mobile and Orange sort out the seamless roaming then I won't have a problem because the masts will do soft handovers between the two operators and my phone won't get upset.  For the moment I can stick to setting the manual network to T-Mobile (I would set it to Orange but then I would get no 3G) but it's annoying if I am out of network that the option to select a new operator always comes up when I press the home button.
If it turns out that the regular switches between T-Mobile and Orange were causing the reboots, does anyone know if I will be able to permanently opt out of the Orange roaming facility, so my SIM only tries to register on T-Mobile?  I read something online from last year about sending a text to 2121 but I can't find anything more recent.  I have contacted T-Mobile to ask the same question but have had no reply yet.
Hopefully this will help someone else with a similar problem, and if anyone else has experienced the same it would be great to know!

This is a very interesting theory ! I was on Vodafone when I recieved my E7 , so used a Virgin PAYG sim to try the E7 until I knew I was happy with it, but whilst running 2 phones, one on VF and the other on Virgin, I noticed the reception was MUCH better with Virgin both at home and at Work (which strangely enough , are the two places I use my phone the most !  ) so I decided to dump VF and go with Virgin instead for 3.5G instead of Edge. My point is AFAIK Virgin 'piggyback' on the Orange/T-Mobile agreement, and I didn't have the issue, despite working in an extremely bad reception area ? Don't know if the Virgin system works any differently, Oh and it's a brand new sim.
Very happy with the E7 and Virgin at the moment
