Using x11 and Gimp

I started to download Gimp and was given a message that I needed to install x11. I have a MacBook Pro with v 10.4.11. When I tried to install x11 a message popped up that I had a newer version on my computer. What version do I need to install and how do I go about it to get Gimp to work?
Thank you for any help
Mark

Sorry to digress from the OP question...

But only the newest developer version of X11 seems to work with tablets and Gimp. And that version is only for the very newest update of Leopard. Anyone know if there will be a X11 compatible with OSX 10.4 regarding the tablet functionality?...
Well, that is not entirely correct. I am using a Graphire4 Wacom tablet and the basic mouse/pen functionality works in X11 (GIMP, GIMPshop) for pointing, clicking, drawing, etc. The main (essential) feature that is not supported in 10.4.11 version of X11 is pressure sensitivity. There are some linux drivers that support pressure sensitivity, but I think the X11 version in 10.4 still won't support it. (You might be able to find some open-source version of X11 as an alternative and compile and build it yourself if you are a developer) If anyone is aware of an update to X11 available for 10.4 that works with pressure sensitivity, please correct me if I am wrong. (Of course the pressure sensitivity works with the bundled tablet software Photoshop Elements and Corel Painter Essentials, so you can always make some layers/masks with the pen tablet using that software and then export those to your GIMP project to add more effects or to the use the tools that are missing from the bundled software)
Has pressure sensitivity support been introduced to X11 in 10.5, or is that still in development?

  • Using X11 and Fink/Fink Commander to run Compiz Fusion?

Hi! One of my friends who loves Ubuntu Linux showed me some weird app called Compiz Fusion and im like ooo... i wanna play wiht that. And I remembered that OS X had a way of installing Linux apps.. so I downloaded the .tar of compiz fusion and I also downloaded and installed Fink and Fink Commander for OS X 10.5.2 but um.. yeah Im not very good with running terminal and junk.. I was following directions so I checked my list of app packages Fink could install in Terminal but either I didnt see compiz or it came up as a name I didnt understand.. does anyone here have experience running X11 and Fink? Or if you have a link where I can teach myself X11 and Fink that would work too! Thanks in advance!

Not to worry. I would lose interest long before that happened
I didn't knock OSX except to point out an actual bug with X11.
But it is not a bug with OSX if some 3rd party tool is not compatible. It is a Mac, not a Linux workstation. If you want to run Linux on it, you can install Linux on it. The Mac has its own window manager designed to allow most X11 apps run and not look too bad alongside the Mac apps. It really is a design feature.
    Personally, I like both.
I like UNIX - a lot. But I'm not too fond of Linux. It is for people who do want to build their own machines out of components. I'm a software person, not a hardware person. That doesn't interest me in the least. As a software person, I have little interest in developing software for Linux because every single Linux box is unique. That is a hassle I don't want to deal with. That is why I like MacOS X so much - all the power of Solaris with the beauty and easy-of-use of a Mac.
In the past there were tons of issues doing linux installs, and linux was fairly labeled as finicky and difficult. By the same token, when I was trying to upgrade to Leopard recently, I got a warning that my only option was "erase and install".
You lucked out. Erase and install is the best way to install a major OS upgrade.
No other options, no explanation why, no suggestions for fixing it -- it was as mysterious as a Linux install from 1999, albeit with a much prettier formatting error message.
In 1999, I didn't even get that much from Linux. The X server just crashed as soon as the install was done and took the boot partition with it - reinstall from scratch. I have VectorLinux running in Parallels, but I never use it.

  • X11 and Gimp won't start

    Hello all.
First of all, sorry if this is in the wrong section, I wasn't quite sure where to post this, seeing as X11, which i'm having problems with is a utility, I thought this might be the right place to post (it says about 'utilities' in the forum descriptions afterall).
Anyway, I seem to be having a problem with the X11 utility, which I installed off of the OS X DVD (from the 'optional installs' package), and a problem with The Gimp, both of which i think are probably related.
Well I installed The Gimp a while ago, aswell as the X11 program, and both worked fine (you probably already know that The Gimp needs X11 to run). But at some point, it suddenly stopped working. I think it may have been after an update, but I really can't remember.
The problem I was having with The Gimp is that it would go to start up, but just after the X11 icon appeared in the dock, the cursor would change to an X for a few seconds. The splash screen would come up, but it didn't even appear to have a background or progress bar or anything, and didn't do anything.
At that point, just running X11 on it's own, or OpenOffice.org worked fine.
Well recently, i've tried to run The Gimp again, and something different happens. The X11 icon comes up and starts bouncing in the dock, but after a few seconds, it closes again, and The Gimp tells me that it needs X11 to run (which I already have of course).
When I try to run X11 on it's own, the same thing happens. The icon comes up in the dock, starts bouncing, then goes again.
I've used the Console program in the Utilities folder, and both times, for both problems (when The Gimp had the funny splash screen and wouldn't start, when it wouldn't start up at all, and when X11 wouldn't start), I get the same few lines which might help, these are below:
    XFree86 Version 4.4.0 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600)
_XSERVTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.X11-unix should be set to root
    [DRI] screen 0 installation complete
    Screen 0 added: 1280x1024 @ (0,0)
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/, removing from list!
    Quitting XDarwin...
So now, I have The Gimp that doesn't work, X11 that doesn't work, and OpenOffice.org doesn't work either (same problem where X11 quits), which is rather annoying, since I could do with using The Gimp.
I hope that explains my problem a bit, and I hope someone can help me sort it out. Thanks in advance for any help

For the problem with /tmp you might see if there is any useful information in this discussion. I've seen a couple of other people with a problem involving /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID. Don't know what the scoop is on that. The directory is supposed to have two files: fonts.dir and fonts.scale. If you have the CID directory and it has the required files I'm afraid I don't know what else would need to be done, although running Repair Permissions from Disk Utility is something you might try. It doesn't hurt, might help, and shouldn't take too long. You might also try posting your problem in the UNIX discussions. You're more likely to attract the attention of people familiar with X11 problems and solutions in that forum.

  • I know this has been answered but... X11 and Gimp

I have read all the advice about reinstalling X11 from the Snow Leopard disk and then doing an Update from Apple.
Recently my hard drive was replaced at the Apple Store and I have had to reinstall all my software but Open Source software like GIMP and INKSCAPE didn't work. SO I religiously read all the docs about this problem and religiously did the stuff above.
Yes I have X11 reinstalled and updated but Gimp and Inkscape STILL do not work - they load but no fonts or anything else does and they just sit there doing nothing no access.
Any ideas - I have taken them off and reinstalled. This has only happened since the new hard drive - everything else is fine but this is very frustrating and I can't work on graphics with these progs now.
Please could some kind person advise another strategy I'm pulling my hair out this end?

  • X11 And GIMP

I downloaded GIMP and it saying that I need to install X11 from my OSX install disc. Well I tried installing it and it says that it is already installed with a new version and when i try to open GIMP it says to turn on X11. Any ideas how to help?

You need to go to the Optional Installs section of your install disk. If you downloaded X11 that version will not work. If X11 has been successfully installed it will appear in your Utilities folder. The first time you launch GIMP it may not finish starting up--I quit it, launched it again then waited patiently and it finally successfully started. All subsequent starts are normal.

  • X11 and Remote KDE desktop

I have started using my Mac for Unix systems administration using X11 and XDMCP (??) to a local linux box running KDE. I start X with -query a.b.c.d and running fullscreen I get a nice fullscreen desktop login. Everything was working fine until I realised that I was still running the Panther version of X11 on my Tiger system. I have upgraded from the install CD and now have a minor but impossible problem.
Everything works as before and I can login to the box. I open a Konsole session on the KDE desktop and suddenly discover that the "e" key on my keyboard has become a backspace key!!! Every other key seems to work fine!!
I cannot figure out what is causing this and how to fix it any and all advice/suggestions would be hugely appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Adrian

Remote Control is a built-in feature for SCCM 2012 and uses the RPC protocol. When you use this, the user can still be logged on while helping.
Remote Desktop is a buit-in feature for Windows and uses the RDP protcol. When you use it, the user will be logged off.
Why you would use one over the other depends on your requirements.

  • I downloaded gimp+x11 and message says can't uninstall -help please

I downloaded gimp with X11 and want to uninstall it but an icon of a hard drive is in my sidebar under my mac hard drive icon  with  gimp X11 on it   and when I tried to drag it to the trash, a message popped up saying "can't = put it in trash because gimp cannot be uninstalled" . Please help me. I have an older version of adobe creative suite but wanted a simpler paint program to merge art and photos. I desperately want to uninstall gimp because it is not even as good as Tuxpaint which my granddaughter uses at school and which I realized has options of photo merging also and seems like a better designed program even if it is for kids. The only problem with Tuxpaint is enlarging its canvas or workspace window and I haven't yet found how to export it's images but my granddaughter loves it and will flip when she realizes she can load photos from her digital camera, I hope. My main problem though is getting rid of gimp.  Thank you for your help.

It sounds like you have a disk image mounted. If that's so, unmount it by clicking the eject icon that appears when you mouse over it in the Finder sidebar, then move the image file (something like "Gimp.dmg") to the Trash.

  • Using aquamace and X11

I have just managed to set up aquamacs to my liking, I like the total customisability.
Anyway, I was playing around remotly logging onto my work computer. I would like to remotly log on and use aquamacs on my local computer to edit files on the remote machine. How can I set it up to so this?
I also noticed that root uses emacs that comes Mac OSX, is there a way to change this too?
    Thanks

I use GIMP which requires X11 and recently it has stopped working.
Did this coincide with any other changes? (e.g. OS update, software changes...)
I rolled back to an older version of GIMP,
So which versions have you tried? Which package are you using? (There are various pre-packaged versions of GIMP for OS X from different groups.)
installed the Xll upgrade on the Leopard DVD but all to no avail.
So which version of X11 were you using before if not the one from the DVD? There may be updates to this version available from Apple. Is it possible you actually installed the DVD version over the top of a later version? /Library/Receipts may show packages installed for X11 if they were separate packages and not part of more general updates.
Right now, GIMP crashes and X11 won't even start when I double click from the applications/utilities folder.
The former is expected given the latter. What exactly happens when you try to open X11? Do you see any useful messages in the log files? (Look at system.log and console.log using /Applications/Utilities/Console and/or open X11 from Terminal and see what error messages you get.)
Are you on ppc or intel?

  • Lightroom and GIMP color issue using jpg

    Here is what I do:
Using an iMac (Tiger) and have my monitor calibrated using the built in MacOS tool. The profile is stored in the Library/ColorSync/Profiles folder. In the GIMP settings about color management, I have chosen the monitor profile from above as the monitor profile and the RGB profile.
I have a (Canon) RAW image mainly in a neutral, if not slightly yellowish, tone with some beautiful golden pins. Imported the CR2 into Adobe Lightroom and exported in sRGB color space, the jpg looks like this: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/18039/1283133
Now I would love this with a nice frame, so I did a hi quality export, loaded it into GIMP 2.4.3, added a frame, and saved it as full size jpg. When I look at the resulting jpg in MacOS Preview application, it looks fine and so it does when I upload it to the web: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/18039/1284108
But as I manage all my images in Lightroom, I also want to manage this one in Lightroom, so I imported it. And look what's coming out: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/18039/1284100
    It's all purple!
It looks the same in Lightroom, Preview and uploaded. Purple. What am I doing wrong? Is there any hidden Lightroom setting I have scambled?
When I am saving TIFF from GIMP, Lightroom imports with proper colors.

The third one (reimported into Lightroom) is indeed purplish. Are you using the latest gimp? Versions of gimp before a while ago could not color manage and will probably forget about the profile. It was only recently added. You should have the working space set to sRGB (so not RGB as you wrote above) in the gimp probably for this image. Also, make sure you do NOT save as a progressive jpeg, but only using baseline compression. Lightroom tends to change the color of progressive jpegs. This is probably what is going on.

  • X11 and open source applications issues

I have a brand new iMac 20 w/ OS X 10.4.8/ Core Duo 2.16/ ATI X1600 w/ 256 mb vram/ 1 gb of system ram. I have been using open source systems for almost two years and would like to continue to use some of the applications which are provided for Macintosh. When attempting to install any of the X11 applications, I get a message saying that I need to have X11 installed in order to install and run the apps. I downloaded the Apple X11 1.0 installer because I did not see X11 on my system. When trying to install it, I got a message saying that it could not be installed because there is a more up to date version already installed.
So, the installers for applications such as, Open office and Gimp Shop, do not see that I actually have X11 installed and they will not install because of it. I do not know enough about OS X to work through this issue.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    zeusx64

I did not see another version of X11 but I did go into the installation of the optional items and did not see it listed. I am fairly well versed in using computers, so I am not a complete noob but I am fairly new to Mac itself.
I have FreeBSD experience, which in itself, gives a bit of X11 experience.
That said, I have already looked for needed packages to install, tried to install and as I said before, I recieved the message during the attempted install of X11, which said I already had a more up to date version installed.
If I have by chance missed something along the way, feel free to provide a link to the needed package.
I am open to learning all that I can and realize that we all are in a never ending process of that learning.
Thanks for the replies and I hope we can figure out what I have not on my own.
I will check my mail when I am at home after work.
    Thanks again.

  • Using X11

I'm hoping this is the correct place to ask this question.
I use GIMP which requires X11 and recently it has stopped working. I rolled back to an older version of GIMP, installed the Xll upgrade on the Leopard DVD but all to no avail. Right now, GIMP crashes and X11 won't even start when I double click from the applications/utilities folder.
Thanks in advance for any help that any may provide.

I'm running X11 and the GIMP without problems. The X11 version is 2.1.4, created 9/23/07 and modified 4/10/08. I believe there were some initial problems with Leopard's X11 which were addressed by an update. Try downloading the 10.5.4 COMBO update from here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
Repair Permissions from Disk Utility, then restart from the install disk and repair your startup disk from the Disk Utility menu item. Restart and run the combo updater. Try X11 again and see if it now works.
I am using the GIMP version 2.4.3, last ran it yesterday.

I was using gimp fine for years with my osx 10 6 8 up until yesterday.  Last night when I downloaded yosemite, gimp has not been working ever since.  I clicked on the icon and it said that x11 wasn't compatible with yosemite and lead me to a link from apple support which said that I need to download xquartz for gimp to work.

  • Using slim and xfce4, something crashes on exit

I recently did a fresh install of Arch onto an older PC that I have. It's running a P4 3.06GHz, an nVidia GeForce FX 5900, and 1GB RAM. Because of the lower resources, I decided to use xfce4 and slim. I have a monitor and TV hooked up through s-video with the "seperate X screen" option. Whenever I logout of xfce (this includes, logout, reboot, shutdown), it goes to a blank black screen with a cursor at the top left and just hangs. I have slim configured to run from inittab, so it picks up after a couple seconds. However, if I run startx from console, and then logout of xfce the system just hangs and wont accept any keyboard input (including ctrl+alt+function to switch run levels). Also, if I choose to shutdown or reboot, the system will do so but the only thing I see is the blank screen until the POST. If I do a startx from console, the logout, I'm able to ssh in from my laptop, login and issue a reboot (again the screen doesn't change until the POST). Also, if I turn the "seperate x screen" option off, and just run the desktop on the monitor, it doesn't freeze. I've worked my way through a number of issues so far, but this one has me completely stumped. I'm not sure if there's something wrong with my configuration or if it's just a problem with the graphics driver. Any advice and/or help is greatly appreciated.

  • What is X11 and what does it do is it worth downloading i've just got a new Macbook air

What is x11and what does it do i've just bought a Macbook Air note book and was wondering if this x11 is worth downloading

In short, think of it as a graphical interface (e.g. window, menus, etc.) that can work across multiple systems. Applications written to use an X11 interface can run on any OS (Mac, Linux, Unix, Windows) with a suitable X11 server (such as XQuartz, mentioned above).
The pros are that such an app can run anywhere. The cons being that it's kind of a lowest-common-denominator effect so it doesn't look like most native applications.
One cool effect, though, is the remote nature of X11 - it's possible to run an application on a remote machine (over the LAN, or even over the internet) and have it display its output on your local X11 system, so your mouse clicks, keystrokes, etc. are transmitted over the wire, processed by the server, and the results displayed on your screen.
As to whether it's worth it - there's no harm in downloading and installing it - it won't do anything unless any app you're running calls for X11, and any application that needs it will tell you so.
