Viewing on Windows machines?!?!?!?

So i set up a site, enjoyed the process and published it to iWeb. As a realist, i am aware that 94%(ish) of the people i would like to share the site with will be viewing it with a Windows machine. Called up a few folks to give them the address and well, not only was it REALLY slow, but half the site wouldn't even come up, and many other "elements" of the site would not show properly. With this disappointment in mind i ventured to the wife's Windows machine and pulled up the site myself to find the horror of what was displayed.
is this a sick and twisted built in "feature" to try to get current mac users to go door to door to try to convert Windows users so that they can see the iWeb sites we create?

o.k., some points I found out:
First of all, dotmac really is not fast, everybody knows that.
2. iWeb creates png-graphics, and not every browser can handle them;
3. If you create some layers, especially text-boxes, many of them are set as png-graphics, don't know why; I guess it's easier than creating proper code;
4. the created png-graphics are much to big! I mean, have a look on the info-boxes! If a complex pic has, let's say, about 80k, iWeb creats the same pic with 800 kb and more! So don't wonder about slow loading sites. What you could do is: Create some code, take Photoshop, GraphicConverter or whatever, and scale down the pics!
5. Make sure you use web-improved fonts;
6. Haven't done it jet, but I guess some people should have a close look at the created code.

I set up a new router and the windows machines connect fine.  My MacBook Pro does not.  I go through the airport assistant and see the network yet when I enter the router WPA password I get a message back saying that the password is incorrect.  And, it isn't!  Very frustrating.  What can I do as I had the same problem after I tried to reinstall my last router.  Again, only on the Mac.  Thanks!

If you kept the same Base Station name and network name, that can confuse Keychain Access. Either change the Base Station and network name, or open Keychain Access Utility and delete any reference to your Base Station and network name. Make sure you delete from the Login and System keychains.

  • I want to download Firefox 17 to a jump drive on a Windows machine and install it on my Mac. Can I do this?

I live in Mountain View and use Google WiFi which is provided by Google for the City of Mountain View. For the past few months, they have been having a BIG problem with the corruption of downloads. Even teensy tiny ones. Perhaps you've heard about it since you're also in Mountain View. They have not responded to repeated posts from the forum... I have an iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and I haven't been able to update my software. I go to Lane Medical Library at Stanford to use the Windows machines there. I load whatever standalone software that I can onto a jump drive and install it at home. Unfortunately, some sites (like Apple and maybe even Mozilla!) recognize the computer you're on and only allow you to download software compatible with the machine that you are actually sitting at. This means that I can't reinstall Safari because I can't get a copy of it. And it looks like I might not be able to install Firefox 17.0 either. At least, that's what I'm trying to find out. "We've made some educated guesses about your current browser and operating system." See what I mean? So when I go to the library, will I be able to download a copy of Firefox 17.0 for the Mac and install it on my computer at home? Thanks!

You can find the latest Firefox release in all languages and for all Operating Systems here:

Download and save the DMG file for Mac on the jump drive and install the program in the usual way.

    Hi,

Similar to this how can we see the schema of a local windows machine?
As far as I know, the schema is the Active Directory component that defines all the objects and attributes that the directory service uses to store
data. The physical structure of the schema consists of the object definitions. The schema itself is stored in the directory.
Regarding Schema, the following articles can be referred to for more information.

  • Won't Display on Windows Machines

Created one page and uploaded to a Go Daddy account (www.kennyjacksonvideo.com). Looks fine on Macs. However, everyone who pulls it up on Windows machines using IE says it's blank. No pictures or text, nothing but the name of my one page at the top, "Home" with a white line through the text. I've taken all spaces out of page names/files and have stuck to basic fonts, Arial. If I didn't upload correctly then it wouldn't display on a Mac either, right? Any thoughts?

However, I have found iWeb created sites that display well on PC's, they are http://leapfrogenterprise.com and http://donandkasha.com - if you view the 'source', notice they used frames to display their site... Best wishes on your project, Rick

  • PDF Thumbnail view in windows explorer

Hi guys, hope you can give me a hand! I`m about to lose my mind here.
I have 4 machines with adobe reader 8.1 installed and in those 4 machines I can see my pdf files as thumnails (they´re books, so I see the cover of each one of them). On my 5th computer not only have I adobe reader 8.1 installed but Adobe Acrobat 8 Standard. But when I select thumbnail view in windows explorer it just does not work.
I`ve tried changing the default program to open pdf files but again all I see it´s a thumbnail alright but it only displays the adobe logo not the first page of the pdf file.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Viewing on Windows

I have posted a webpage and tested the link (a movie) on a windows machine. A message came up saying that 'Quicktime is missing software required to perform this operation. Unfortunately, it is not available on the QT server.'
Then it looked like it was loading up but when I played it there was an empty grey screen with just the sound audible.
I have watched .Mac homepage movies on the same machine with no problem apart from the download speed.
    Has anybody any suggestions please?
    Jim

I get the same problem, I create a podcast for the iPod in iMovie.
Drag it to the podcast in iiWeb and it works great to view on the mac, but running windows it reports there are no software to view it. Just plays the sound.
How to make a video podcast that works running a windows browser AND on the iPod?

  • Washed out color in QuickTime videos on Windows machine

I recently shot a video for my church using an older Sony camera in HDV format.  I edited the video in FCPX, and the colors looked fine in the FCPX timeline -- bright and rich.  I exported the file using Compressor in H.264, 1920x1080 for projection in the church, and in .mp4, 640x360 for website display.  The colors looked fine in the church projection (the QuickTime file was run on a MacBook), and they look fine when the website version is displayed in a browser running on a MacBook.  However, when I view the video in a browser running on a Windows machine, or simply display the video in QuickTime on a Windows machine, the colors look totally drab and washed out, like a nasty grey filter was applied.  I know it is not my Windows computer display, since other web videos look just fine.  If you want to see what I am talking about, check out http://www.newsongchurch.com/ministries/small-groups/index.html.
I spent hours one day researching this issue in old discussion groups posts.  I tried a lot of different suggestions that I found:
--Encoding using x264encoder and changing the settings for the "nclc atom" and "gamma 2.2"
--Use JES Deinterlacer to change the same variables
    --Increase gamma settings in Compressor
I must have exported the video 25 times with different settings and nothing seems to work.  It is incredibly frustrating to work for days shooting and editing a video and then have it look like poop on Windows machines (which is what most people will use to view this video).  In the 6 or so years I have been using Final Cut, I've found that it takes way longer to find the right export settings than it does to edit!
Does anyone have any thoughts about how I can make this video look the same on both Macs and PCs?  Please let me know if you need more information about my project.  Many thanks in advance!

I have both my PC & Mac running through the same display, the Mac digital and the PC analog, easy enough to switch between using the monitor front panel.
They look about the same to me, I had a custom calibration on the PC which had the gamma raised so it looked a a little washed out but only by a small amount, changing to a standard calibration and they looked nearly identical.
What I would like to see is the gamma lowered by a small increment and the contrast raised by the same amount.
The contrast alone might do it but I would try both.

  • AI CS6 thumbnail views in windows explorer

Does anyone at Adobe think it might be a good idea to enable AI CS6 thumbnail views in windows explorer again, uh, I mean, we're GRAPHICS DESIGNERS, and we, uh, need to browse IMAGE FILES in AI and PS. I know there are $19.95 third-party apps out there, but we're paying good money (thousands of $ over the next few decades) to get the BEST SOFTWARE ON EARTH, neh? I thought my brand new Windows 7 machine was bro-ken when all I saw was dumb-icons boo...

Lol.  Adobe has known about this stupid problem for about 4 years.  Since Vista x64 started gaining popularity.  Acrobat 8.x was the first version where people really started scratching their heads wondering why & when the problem would be fixed.  Then came Acrobat 9.   And now "X".  Still not fixed, well, I'm sure next year we'll have Acrobat 11, so keep holding your breath.

  • Vista screen saver different on store Windows machine?

How do I get a black background?
Also all the windows quickly fade when closed or opened. Mine just open and close ... No fade. How do I get the fade?

It isn't like you need to use command console and REGEDIT.
Uninstalling graphics, and installing new drivers, boosted the score on my Nvidia 3DMark06 by 2000 pts. I hope you followed the other control panel settings.
I can think of lots of things that fall under the "maintenance" category in OS X that are necessary and harder to communicate. you know how to boot in Safe Mode, you can download a program, and you have no trouble using the control panel Programs to uninstall.
All I want is to see someone learn to get better use and enjoy using their system more fully.
    *Drive Sweeper*
Guru3D - Driver Sweeper is a fast tool to remove driver leftovers from your system. It's very important to remove your drivers on a proper way, because driver leftovers can cause problems like stability and startup problems. You can use it if you want to update/remove drivers from your system.
There are two methods to use Driver Sweeper.
Both methods achieve the same results.
This method is always able to clean all files.
This method will delete remaining files upon reboot (if deleting failed).
You can clean your drivers this way:
    * Use the official uninstaller(s) of the driver(s) you want to uninstall.
    * Reboot your PC in Safe Mode.
    * Run Driver Sweeper and select what to clean.
    * Analyse lists all the entries possible to remove, cleaning removes the entries selected.
    * More drivers can be selected for the same cleaning process.
*What can it be used for*
The current supported drivers are NVIDIA (Display and Chipset), ATI (Display), Creative (Sound) Realtek (Sound), Ageia (PhysX) and Microsoft (Mouse).
All the settings are saved in an ini file. Nothing is created in the registry, so it's possible to use it as a portable program. Log files can be saved to the harddisk and viewed as well. You can find the logs under the Tools menu.

  • Ref Movie created on Mac won't play on Windows machine

I created a Ref Movie on a Mac. Copied Ref Movie and full movie to a WinPC. Got -2048 error. Could view full movie. Also, Ref Movie file size was reported as 0k on WinPC.
Used WinPC to access and run both movies from the Mac. Same problems.
Created Ref Movie on WinPC, copied both to Mac. Mac played the both just fine. However, Mac reported file size of the Ref Movie as 0K.
Can I created Ref Movies on a Mac that can be used on a WinPC (I realize full movie has to also be available on WinPC)?

Turns out the problem is file system related. When OSX copies a file to a Win machine, it also creates a hidden file with additional information. It my case, OSX is creating the following two files on my WinPC:
    MyRefMovie.mov
._MyRefMovie.mov (a hidden file on a Windows machine)
The application I use to create the ref movie seems to generate my problem, because it is putting the ref movie data into the hidden file, not the unhidden file. Apple's MakeRefMovie utility puts the information into the unhidden file. The behavior of creating hidden files is part of OSX (though there is a utility called BlueHarvest that can control it), but what goes into the files seems to be an application level issue. Hope this helps others who have the problem.

  • SNMP Discovery of Windows machine

I'm trying to install and configure the Netbackup management pack, which ultimately requires that you discover the windows machine that runs the Netbackup NOM Console as an snmp discovered device.    (the netbackup pack is essentially a trap converter).
My problem is that I cannot seem to discover the windows server using the snmp discovery wizard.   It just times out and says that the device was not discovered. I have discovered other SNMP devices, but this is the first time I've tried to discover a windows server via snmp.    Here's what I've tried and/or verified:
    - SQL Broker is enabled
    - SNMP service and snmp trap service are set to automatic start and are running
    - SNMP community strings are all "public" with read/create on both the NOM machine and the management server.
    - "Accept traps from all hosts" is enabled.
    - I've tried both snmp v1 and v2 discovery in the wizard
    - I have verified that there is NO port blocking between the agent and MS.  (using the portqry utility).
    - Ping responses are successful to/from both nodes and name resolution also works fine.
I've found several forum postings about snmp discovery and everything seems to be set correctly.
Any other bugs or known issues about discovering windows server via snmp?   anyone every successfully deploy the netbackup management pack?
    Thanks
    What Gives?

    John,
Couple things - I think since I posted this thread that Symantec has released a newer version of NOM and the Netbackup management pack that had a couple fixes.      The SNMP blocking issue was caused by the NOM Server service and I believe there was a configuration section in the NOM console that allows you to change NOM's snmp port so that the Windows SNMP service can use port 161.
Even after making this change, I found that the Netbackup discovery views were not getting populated.   I found that the designated management server that the nom server was focused on was generating the following WMI error and I found that I had to add the default agent action account into the local administrators group of the NOM server.   This allowed the WMI queries to complete and allowed the discovery data to populate.     Other than this, we just defined the alerts in NOM that we wanted to be notified on and chose SNMP as the delivery mechanism - then the alerts showed up in SCOM.       Please note that the nom/scom integration components do no maintain state information - it's really just a basic SNMP trap forwarder.   So you will have to manually close any alerts that come from NOM into scom.

  • Smart View Options Window

    Hi,
On some of our computers it takes up to ten seconds if we open the Smart View Options Window. On other maschines it opens immediatly. Do you have any idea?
It occurs on Version 11.1.2.1 and 11.1.2.2
    thanks and best regards
    Oliver

We have had some compatibility issues with certain Excel add-ins and the Smart View add-in on various machines and now advise users to disable any other add-ins when using SV....so this could be the case with you (although ours are generally stability issues rather than performance issues as you have reported.)
I guess the only way of knowing for sure is to disable all other add-ins and check performance. You can then re-introduce each add-in and see if you can identify the problem one.
    Thanks
    JB

  • Accessing my Windows machine

I can not access my Windows XP Home Edition w/SP2machine.
I have activated 'Sharing' (in Internet & Network' in the System Preferences, by checking 'Windows Sharing' in the Services tab.
I can see my Windows computer. It shows the workgroup (which is 'Workgroup') and I enter my Windows username and password at the :SMB/CIFS File System Authentication' dialog box. When I enter the correct information I get the 'Select SMB/CFIS shared volume you want to connect to and clock on OK I then get a message saying:
'The alias "Dell" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found' and then I'm pretty much in an infinite loop.
    What is the secret here?
    Thanks.

Be sure you create a shared folder on the Windows machine, not just sharing the drive. Here are some articles that may help:

Connecting to Windows shares - fix Several users have been receiving the message "The Alias YOURSERVER could not be opened because the original item cannot be found" when trying to connect from a Mac running running Mac OS X 10.3.3 to Windows systems via the Finder.
MacFixIt reader Peter Monahan has found what appears to be a fix:
"Your Windows XP or Windows 2000 Computer must have at least One Shared Folder. Sharing only the Drive is not adequate in 10.3.3 If you do not have a shared folder (directory) then you will receive the "original item cannot be found" error when you attempt to connect from a Mac.
    • Create a shared folder and double-check the Windows security privileges.
    • If you want to share an entire Drive on a Windows XP or 2000 Computer, the share name must be Eight Characters or less (i.e. C_PETER or C_DRIVE) or you will not be able to view it or select it from the Finder drop down menu.
"In some cases you may need to delete the Windows Share and then establish a new share if you connect but can't see the contents of a drive. Once done and if you still have connectivity problems, either Restart the MAC, or delete the cached information by using the finder and selecting GO>>FOLDER and then type /var and hit enter. Then look in the "automount" folder and delete the folder called "network".
"Aliases now work as a result. Username and Password are now stored in Keychain. We can connect from finder in 10.3.3 to Windows Computers (as long as there is at least one shared folder). We can select aliases to load at start-up under System Preferences>>Accounts."

  • Viewing on windows...again

I have been using iweb since it came out, and love it. It was frustrating working out all the little kinks, but one thing still remains, is how it loads on a windows machine.
It seems to load in chunks and until its loaded a white overlay appears over areas until a chunk is loaded. Thats not too bad, unless it takes long for a page to load, but some times THE WHITE CHUNK STAYS AFTER THE PAGE LOADS
and covers up some elements of the page.
Any tips on preventing this type of thing?
