Virtual PC and Powerpoint

Hi
I am hoping someone can advise me here. Although I use Powerpoint in the office for mac application it is not entirely compatible with the PC version, particularly with regard to font sizes, object placement and other formatting issues. Most of the time there are workarounds, but when under pressure to deliver a presentation these issues just waste too much time.
My question is if I use a PC version of powerpoint on VPC will the output be identical to a 'real' pc version?
If not I may have to give up my beloved powerbook for work.
Nick

My question is if I use a PC version of powerpoint on
VPC will the output be identical to a 'real' pc
version?
Yes (on the assumption that any fonts you use are on both the PC and the VPC).

You can certainly use iWork, though I hesitate to recommend it to a seasoned Windows user simply because it would add another level of the unfamiliar with which you would have to gain familiarity. The iWork applications are certainly very competent and in most respects both easy to use and surprisingly powerful. They are not 100% compatible however, though that typically manifests itself in document formatting issues rather than anything more significant.
I have never attempted to import emails from a Windows system into MacOS - other than in Outlook connected to an Exchange server, thus not really an issue at all. I doubt that the Mail app in MacOS can import directly, but of course you could always set the account(s) up on the Mac and then forward emails you want to keep from the PC. Not elegant, but it works. Virtually any Windows document or file, whichever application created it, can be opened or converted for use on a Mac, and using both systems on my desk each day I rarely see any issues switching stuff from one machine to the other. You may stumble over one or two issues, but likely not significant.
In switching platforms there will be some inevitable issues, not so much with being able to import your stuff because there's usually a workaround or a utility that can help, but just with getting familiar with the platform and the differences between Windows and MacOS that can obscure their similarities. From time to time the support community here hears from a user who has found the migration very problematic and regrets it, but for the most part the phrase 'I should have done this years ago...' is rather more prevalent!

  • WORD, EXCEL, and POWERPOINT now crashing when saving new file

I have Microsoft Office 2004 WORD, EXCEL, and POWERPOINT, which were working just fine for several days on 10.5.1. (all updates are current). Now, every time I try to save a new document, all 3 apps crash, with the following thing in common in the crash log:
    0xb80ec881 gettimeofday_wrapper + 37593
This doesn't happen when opening an existing file, and saving changes to it. Note: A few days ago, I ran Disk Utility to do a permissions repair for another issue - could this have caused this issue?
    Any ideas???

I just fixed my own issue, based on a posting I saw in one of the other discussions. I did the same thing, by downloading the standalone update and then installing. After the required restart, everything worked fine!!! It seems like there was definitely a problem with the version that was installed via Software Update.

  • Whiteboard, Polls, Q&A and Powerpoint not working over Federation

    Hi,
I have a problem with whiteboard, polls, Q&A and Powerpoint sharing over federation, if the federated endpoint is behind a web proxy with HTTPS inspection enabled. Audio, video and desktop sharing works fine.
    Scenario:
2 Domains which are federated (DomainA and DomainB), all Lync servers are full patched (June 2014)
2 Users (UserA from DomainA and UserB from DomainB) works with full patched Lync Client 2013. Both Users work on their internal LAN. The client cannot reach the internet directly. Web requests go to through a proxy with HTTPS inspection.
    1. UserA starts a Chat with UserB. UserB accepts.
    2. UserA adds the whiteboard. UserB gets the "Add meeting content" button and accept.
    3. UserA gets the whiteboard, UserB gets a error message "Because of network issues..."
In this scenario, UserB's Lync client tries to connect to WebConf Edge of DomainA over TCP/443 (HTTPS). Because UserB cannot reach the Internet directly from the inside LAN, the request goes trought the web proxy of DomainB (ProxyB). The web proxy is configured
with https inspection, so on the WebConfEdge I get requests from the web proxy of DomainB which are also answered by the WebConf Edge. On the pc of UserB I also get the answer, but signed with a certificate of the web proxy which is added as trusted root certificate
(normal behaviour if https inspection es enabled). On the network trace, as I can see, UserB resets (ACK, RESET) the connection to WebConf Edge directly after receiving the first https response.
Then I changed the web proxy (ProxyB) to bypass the https inspection for the ip address of the WebConf Edge of DomainA. The same scenario works fine now. It always works fine, if UserB have directly access to web conf edge of Domain A (UserB is in the internet
    and not in the LAN).
I also could check this vice versa. It depends on which side, the conferencing is hosted. As soon as the other user connects through a web proxy which doesn't bypass the request directly, the user do not get the web conf content.
Then I tried with other domains and other environments, but all of them had the same issue, as long as the web request from the foreign user goes throug a web proxy. It seems there is no dependency on which product of web proxy will be used, it seems to
be a dependency on https inspection and all changes the web proxy do in this case with a web request and response.
I always tested with whiteboard, but the same behaviour is with Q&A and polls and also with Powerpoint (WAC). For Powerpoint it's only because the foreign user do not get the URL from web conf, so the client do not know how to connect to the WAC of DomainA.
During the tests with several Domains (customers), I see a corrupt "Client Hello" from a specific web proxy. In the list of cipher suites in the "Client Hello", the web proxy added an additional byte (0xFF) at the last TLSCipherSuites
entry, so the extensions, followed by the ciphersuites list in the "Client Hello" are not readable. So the connection will be reseted directly.
Because my workaround depends on the web proxy of the foreign side (configure bypass) it's not really a practicable way to make sure, the web conferencing content will work. Is there an other way to solve this issue?
    Regards, Stephan

    Hi,
From your description, the issue should be the
https inspection on the web proxy, maybe you should change from the web proxy side.

  • How to delete Ubuntu virtual desktop and free up allocated space in windows 8?

I have tried out Hyper-V for the first time to install Ubuntu desktop. During the installation process, 10GB of space is allocated. I believe this space would have been  created as a separate partition and formatted
to linux file system. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Now I would like to remove the Ubuntu virtual desktop and free up the allocated space. I have deleted the desktop from the Hyper-V manager. Is this sufficient to free up the space?

However Diskpart tool in command prompt does not show the last one [ 8gb]. Does this mean if this was allocated
    to Virtual desktop? Please help

You must delete the VHDx that you created when you created the VM.
This is the virtual disk that Ubuntu was installed into - you will not see this as a volume, you will see this as a VHDx file.

word has stopped working on my macbook air, i have used it before and powerpoint etc are all still working, but i can no longer open word or word files can anyone help?

    Hi Rachel,
Have you tried reinstalling Microsoft Word? Have you tried reinstalling Office? Have you run any updates recently for Microsoft Office? There was one that came out this week. You may wish to ask this question over at the Microsoft Word forums, there's a good chance you'll get a better answer as well. This forum is primarily designed for the MacBook Air hardware and interoperability with OS X on a MacBook Air.

  • View Word and PowerPoint in browser no longer working

    Hi There,
I have SharePoint 2010 environment. I configured Word Viewing Service and PowerPoint service accordingly and all working perfectly. But recently it didn't work any more. I deleted services and recreate services, even stop and restart the service from Central
Administration interface didn't make it working. I got same error message as below:
I found some suggestions from Google, and I did check the setting, but I didn't fix the problem.
    Regards,
    Tony

You must increase the permission on both service applications and then execute an IIS reset. Follow the steps explained in below article and you should get the error resolved.
Fixing Office Web Apps "Network Connectivity has been lost error"
    As given in article...
    1. Run this script in PowerShell:
    Remove-PSSnapin Microsoft.SharePoint.PowerShell -erroraction SilentlyContinue
    Add-PSSnapin Microsoft.SharePoint.PowerShell -erroraction SilentlyContinue
    Write-Host -ForegroundColor White "--------------------------------------------------------------"
Write-Host -Foregroundcolor green "Fixing Word Viewing Service Application"
    $e = Get-SPServiceApplication | where {$_.TypeName.Equals("Word Viewing Service Application")}
    $e.WordServerIsSandboxed = $false
Write-Host -Foregroundcolor green "Word Viewing Service Application is fixed"
    Write-Host -ForegroundColor White "--------------------------------------------------------------"
Write-Host -Foregroundcolor green "Fixing PowerPoint Service Application"
    Get-SPPowerPointServiceApplication | Set-SPPowerPointServiceApplication -EnableSandboxedViewing $false
    Get-SPPowerPointServiceApplication | Set-SPPowerPointServiceApplication -EnableSandboxedEditing $false
Write-Host -Foregroundcolor green "PowerPoint Service Application is fixed"
    Write-Host -ForegroundColor White "--------------------------------------------------------------"
    2. Do an IIS reset on SharePoint Application Server.
Note: Office Web Apps must be installed on a farm which uses a domain controller. For standalone installations this fix will not
work. Before running this script please check the name of “Word Viewing Service Application“
and PowerPoint Service Application because it may differ in your system. You can check it either from central administration site or by running “Get-SPServiceApplication”
    command.
Please remember to click 'Mark as Answer'
if the reply answers your query or 'Upvote' if it helps you.

  • Problem with Virtual PC and Network Connection - VPC gets disconnected

    Hi,
I've been having a few problems with a virtual computer and its network connection.  I've set up a few computers the same way over the years and they all work fine except this one.  We use the Virtual PC and XP mode to access our data from an older
program.  The databases are on a server, which are accessed as a mapped drive.  Every once in a while (with no particular pattern, sometimes it doesn't happen all day, sometimes it happens every 5 mins), the VPC gets disconnected from the network,
my program returns a file read error and then everything is frozen.  When I try to ipconfig/release and renew, it releases correctly then it won't renew.  I need to shut down the VPC from the Win7 task manager and even so, it doesn't shut it down,
even when I try to kill the vpc process.  The only way it'll come back up is if I restart the computer.  The network connection on the Win7 computer doesn't do that.
Is there anything I can do to fix this ?
    Thanks,
    Melanie

    Hi,
Does it become more stable now, actually, I'm afraid that this issue is not related with the drive letter or name. Since you're using bridge mode, the I would suggest you use NAT as a test, it is the default network configuration, which allows the VM
to leverage the external TCP/IP network connected to the host. This is very useful if you regularly move the host computer between different network configurations. NAT is the preferred networking option when there is a shortage of IP addresses, a need to
ensure the VM’s IP address is not targetable from an external network, or a need for connecting using WWAN.

Just one more thing - the description of what i did while first Kernel appeared:
Happened 2 days ago. Wasn't turning it off for like a day, only sleep mode by closing it. Worked fine all day, wasn't doing anything, except for checking mail 2-3 times and having windows 7 virtual machine opened but doing nothing, everything was going fine. Then closed it without turning off.
Opened 3-4 hours later, everything was working fine for 30 minutes of checking mail, then Kernel appeared. After that pretty much everything i did is described in part 1-5.
Note: all the time MBP was connected to internet via wifi, so updates to both MBP and virtual machine of all programs were possible.
I only shared downloads and desktop folders, so windows couldn't have access to system folder of Mac Os.
    Hope this might help...Thanks again.

But after the update on 25 February 2014 to both the XP Mode and Windows 7, my Virtual PC no longer works. It loops continuously and never starts.
Is anyone else having this problem? Are there any hot fixes? We have our accounting and address management system running in XP mode, so this is quite important to find a fast solution.
    Thanks very much
    David

    Hi,
Rename the .vsv (virtual machine saved states) file in "C:\Users\[user id]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows
Virtual PC\Virtual Machines",then start the VM again.
As a test, you can also uninstall the newly installed updates, check whether this issue is related with the updates. Generally, Windows Updates will not cause any issues, but if some software installed in your system conflicts with it or the updates
not installed correctly, it will cause some unexpected issues.

  • Installing the New Virtual Machine and XP Mode in Win7x64 on the Intel 2x E5-2620 Architecture (12 cores, 24 cpus)

I have been hibernating quietly at school with an Intel Core Duo T7300 on XP, and have been insulated from the madness of multi-core processors.  I gather that there were problems with installing the XP Virtual Machine on Vista under Quad architectures,
but that these eventually got resolved in 2009.
The newer problem is concerned with installing the XP Virtual Machine on Win7x64 with greater than four cores in the cpu architecture.  Others have mentioned this problem over this past Summer 2012.  The problem is that at the very last step of
the complete install, Win7x64 reports a failure to install the XP Virtual Machine, and with no further comment.
Apparently KB/2519949 gave a temporary (MSFT qualifies this as "temporary") hotfix solution to this problem for AMD 8-core chips in the Bulldozer series.  However MSFT cautions that this problem requires further research.  This was earlier
    this Summer 2012.
My problem is that I have an Intel 2xE5-2620 duo-processor cpu architecture (2x6=12 cores, 24 cpus in Windows).  The cpu architecture is both Intel, and with far more than the old standard of four cores.  The XP Virtual Machine in Win7x64 will
    not install, as described above.
I have an armload of new 64-bit software all of which has installed pristinely in Win7x64 under this 2xE5-2620 Intel architecture.  However, I have one very important piece of legacy (latest version incompatible beyond XP type of legacy) technical writing
software that is critical to my PhD thesis.  In need the XP Virtual Machine for this, and I have no idea how to get it.  My PhD thesis supervisor also needs this particular piece of "legacy" technical writing software for his new book on Probability
    Theory.

I have news about this issue with XP Mode on Workstation machines.  I have actually known about this for a couple of months, but it has not been until these Christmas 2012 holidays that I have had a chance to follow up with an implementation.
In review, I purchased a Workstation computer for scientific computation purposes this past August 2012.  My chipset is an Intel 2x E5-2620 for a total of 12 cores, and it turns out that this was not the problem for XP Mode.  My OEM shipped this
machine with Windows 7, but without XP Mode, and there is a reason why.
As an aside, it should be mentioned that the main line MSFT OS, Windows 7 or 8, is what I want for this machine, and not Server 2012.  The reason is that most of the scientific computation and technical writing software that I use is written only for
Windows, and not for Server.  Then also hopefully Hyper-V can do in Windows 8 most of what XP Mode is doing for me in Windows 7.
My dealer was able to tell me, when he got back from holidays in late September, that the reason that XP Mode failed to install on this Workstation, and the reason it was not included by the OEM, was that the original HDD configuration was for RAID (3 available
bays) and formatted for drives of at least 1TB in size.  Although the original HDD installation was only a single HDD with only 500GB, the machine was equipped to have something much larger installed.  But this format excluded the possibility of
    XP Mode.
So we changed the hard drive installation to something that I preferred.  We installed Windows 7 on a 480GB SSD, and I installed all my software on this drive, as well as all my important data.  Most importantly, since this drive is less than 1TB,
we could use the MBR format which allows XP mode.  Then we also formatted the original HDD of 500GB in MBR, and decided to run it with Intel RST.  This second drive is for unimportant data, and large files.  For backup we chose a 2TB USB 3.0
external.  In this setting, installing Windows XP Mode was easy, as the only thing we needed to do was modify BIOS to enable virtualization which was part of the Intel 2x E5-2620 chipset already.
I am very pleased with XP Mode. The scientific writing software for my thesis that I was worried about does actually run in Windows 7 under compatibility mode, but there have been some huge advantages to installing in in XP Mode as well. I still have licensed
copies of Office 2003, Acrobat Pro 9, and MathType 5.2, and other old software as well. I now have all new software, for example Office 2010 (64-bit), Acrobat Pro 10 (32-bit for 64-bit), and MathType 6.8 (64-bit), and lots of other things. However, now that
I have my scientific wrtiting software (for which the maker has not caught up with Windows Vista/7) installed in XP Mode, I have also installed WORD 2003 with MathType 5.2 in XP Mode. My scientific writing software can translate WORD 2003/MathType 5.2 in RTF
format to LaTeX. So lets hope these guys eventually catch up with Windows 7 and 8.
I am also using XP Mode to archive a large block of my old data from the XP days. I still have licensed copies of the out of date software. And I would rather not update every single old file I have to a current format. So altogether, XP Mode is working
out quite well.  It is very fast with my Intel 2x E5-2620 and maximum RAM.

  • Hi, so I want to get Microsoft Office on my Macbook Pro, and I think I found it on the app store. The app is templates for Microsoft Office is that the same thing. Will I get Word, Excel, and Powerpoint on my laptop if I buy and download that app?

If I buy the templates for Microsoft Office on the app store, I will get Word, Excel, and Powerpoint right?

Templates are just that, not the software itself.  You need to contact MicroSoft online to purchase, or buy a DVD to install from...be sure to get MS Office 2011 to install with Lion or Mountain Lion, older versions than 2008 will not work.
