Virtual (Smart?) Application Folder

I know there are three preferred locations for applications to reside: /Network/Applications (network apps), /Applications (system apps), and ~/Applications (user apps). By default, my Dock's "Application" folder is just a link to /Applications and thus just shows the system apps. Is it possible to create a virtual folder which displays the combined contents of all three application folders, rather than having to access them separately? This way, the user doesn't have to remember which folder contains a specific application.
Thus far, I have made a Smart Folder and customized its property list (by editing the raw .savedSearch file) to search the above three directories. However, this recursively searches all subpaths, so all apps in /Applications/Utilities appear at the top-level of the Smart Folder. Ideally, this wouldn't happen, and the Smart Folder would basically be a copy of the root-level contents of the application folders. Here's a concrete example of what I'm looking for:
/Applications:
App Store.app
Automator.app
Utilities/
/Network/Applications:
Firefox.app
~/Applications:
Eclipse.app
Fetch.app
Virtual Application Folder:
App Store.app*
Automator.app*
Eclipse.app*
Fetch.app*
Firefox.app*
Utilities/*
* where all these guys are aliases or symlinks.
Is this possible with Smart Folders? If not, is there another virtual folder abstraction available that can handle the job?

Thanks for the response, Barney. Yes, on a typical system, /Applications is for all users and ~/Applications is user-specific. I was trying to indicate that, in a networked environment, /Applications is for all users on a particular system, rather than all users on the network. The discussion can be restricted to just /Applications and ~/Applications, though, since any solution should easily be able to add /Network/Applications to the list of search paths. Also, I just picked the locations for Firefox, Fetch, etc. arbitrarily.
Ideally, I'd like something that transparently updates when any of the Applications folders is modified. In other words, if I add something to /Applications, it shows up in the virtual folder immediately. Manually creating aliases or symlinks isn't going to achieve that. I could easily write a script to regenerate the folder on modification, but I don't know how to invoke it when any of the sources are modified.
Also, since I doubt I can have my cake and eat it too, it's ok to have a smart folder which opens in Finder, rather than presenting the items via the Dock. Bonus points to circumventing this, though.

  • Logon with Virtual Smart Card Breaks Run As Administrator

I've been testing the Virtual Smart Card (VSC) capability on a Surface Pro 2 and Dell Latitude E7240.
This may be by design however, I have noticed that if I login using the VSC I am unable to use "Run As Administrator" functionality - for example:
    Command Prompt from Start Screen
    Task Manager
I'm prompted for a username / password or the VSC PIN.
In my environment the Administrative user does not have a VSC, so it is a username/password. When using Run As Administrator I'm therefore always entering a username and password.
Once the credentials are entered the prompt goes away but the application never runs.
If I lock/unlock the session and login using username/password for the non-admin user, instead of the VSC and PIN, I am able to elevate using Run As.
I have noticed that I can use the workaround as specified in this article:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2013976
To work around this issue, start the application using the Run as different user right-click context menu option and select the smart card reader of choice.
Click Start, select Programs, and locate the shortcut item in the Programs menu or the application folder for the application you want to run
Hold down the SHIFT key while you right-click the shortcut item, and select Run as different user.
Enter the username, password and the domain name or choose a smart card logon.
Seems a little odd... maybe I am missing something. If anyone can assist that would be great.

  • Missing application icon in applications folder

I drug my applications folder to my doc to make a shortcut and got the poof cloud. now all my icons are gone in Applications folder in finder and in all my time machine backups.how do I get them back. all I can find in trash is a folder called Recovered Files with 48 files like this one /var/tmp/tmp.0.BbdYw430645480 inside.

I'm guessing you didn't prep your new drive. Do the following (you will need to boot from your external drive:)
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
After formatting has completed quit DU. Now use SuperDuper! or your favorite cloning utility to clone your system from the external drive to the new internal drive.

  • Applications not in application folder?

So i installed parallels Desktop onto my system, and when it installed my applications folder (home-> applications) only showed the windows 8 applications. I have recently uninstalled parallels, but my application folder now doesn't show anything!! I was wondering if there was a way to get them back?? My applications are still in the launchpad, and if i click the applications icon in my sidebar in the finder i can see all my applications. Thanks

You said that only Windows 8 applications were there. As you removed Parallels, you canoot open the Windows virtual machine you probably had, so you cannot see the applications again.
If you want to move applications you use in OS X to that folder, do it only with applications you downloaded from the Internet. You will have problems if you do it with system apps

  • How to stream flv files from a diffferent directory outside the applications folder

    Hi everyone,
I want to stream the flv files from a different location
stored in the hard disk, which is outside the applications folder
in the FMS installation root directory. Does anyone know how to do
    it?
    Regards,
    Diptanu

VOD changes won't help him, he said outside the applications
folder. According to adobe any new vod folders must be in the
applications folder, hence virtually worthless for most purposes. A
better question may be, how do you specify a folder on a different
local hard drive. I wish adobe wouldn't make it so complicated, it
should be a really simple matter.

  • Missing files, user folder, application folder and system folder

    I am using a MacBook Pro 2011 model with OS X 10.9.4.
Since I bought the machine several years ago, I have had only a few small problems with it. Yesterday I wanted to reduce the size of a video, so I downloaded a video compressor/converter software, and left the computer on and the program compressing my video whilst I went off to work. When I returned home, the compressing program had a pop-up saying ''Could not complete compression, system full'' or something along those lines.... After trying to play the movie without success, I decided that I would restart my computer, as it had been on all day.
When the computer restarted, it came up with the grey loading bar, which usually comes up when I have done a software update. It disappeared quite soon and several minutes later, my user profile appeared. I logged in as normal, and then tried to open my browser. An error message popped up stating"Can't open user profile directory, because you lack sufficient privileges. You might want to contact the administrator of this machine". I then tried to open other programs and they all came up with similar messages and did not open. Skype stated "Can't create a lock file at Users/Lauren/Library...etc".
I then went to Finder to look at my applications and they were ALL GONE! Then I went to a folder I have with all my files called "My files", and although the primary folders were visible, "SCHOOL,WORK, HOLIDAYS PICS, etc", these folders were empty. I then checked my User folder, and my systems folder and these were empty too. However, the Desktop and Documents folders still contain the documents that were previously there, and my background images remained the same.
I tried to open Word, and although it is also missing from the applications folder, and it opened, also allowing me to open a document which I know is located within the 'empty' folders. I have a feeling that my documents and files are still on my computer, but I don't know how to access them!
Please if someone could shed light on the situation! All my work files and personal files are on this computer and I would be devastated to loose them!
Let me know if you need any more ino or screen shots!
    Kind regards,
    Lauren

OS X- Gray progress bar appears under Apple logo during startup
You need to start by doing the following:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Probelm in getting absolute path of the application folder?

I have problem in getting the absolute path of the application folder.
I wriiten the following line in my action class:
    String absPath = getServlet().getServletContext().getRealPath("/");
when i run my application 'DTH' in Tomcat server, I am getting correct path :
    C:\Tomcat\jakarta-tomcat-5.0.25\webapps\DTH
But when i run this application in weblogic server, I am getting null value for the above line.
Can any one help me in this?

    public java.lang.String getRealPath(java.lang.String path)
This method returns null if the servlet container cannot translate the virtual path to a real path for any reason (such as when the content is being made available from a .war archive).
so, getRealPath() might not be a very good approach because of its different behavior when used from a war or exploded application.
    What you could do is:
    1. pass the path as a parameter inside web.xml (config files, log files etc)
    2. For dynamic lookup of files you could make use of ClassLoader.getResource().
    Hope it helps.

  • Strange behavior with Applications folder

I recently installed Mavericks on my iMac, and now something is screwed up with my system.
When I drag a new application into the closed Applications folder, for some reason the app does not immediately show up in there. I can type the first two letters of the name and it jumps to the location where it should be, but the app is not there.
If I do a spotlight search, the app shows up in the found results. If I choose"show in enclosing folder" From the contextual menu, it opens a new window for my applications in list view (even though I already have the applications folder open) and that window shows the found application and one other application, but no others. Later, if I open up the applications folder, the newly installed application finally shows up there where it is supposed to be.
Is this a known issue and Mavericks, or is there something wrong with my installation?

No, it is not a Mavericks problem. Sounds more like a permissions or other problem in your Applications folder. I would suggest the following:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
Select Restart from the Apple menu.

  • Organizing iPhoto in Application Folder

    Hey folks,
I just found this great discussion forum last night. Read for hours. Very helpful discussions. I used a PC for 14 years, but recently switched to the "dark side". Mac's are so far superior to PC, cannot believe it. Only been using for a couple of months, but do not even like to go back and work on my PC laptop. Anyway, having trouble understanding the organizational thinking behind the Application folder as it relates to iPhoto and a couple of other apps. When I bought my iMac, it had iPhoto 06 installed. I imported @ 3,000 photo's into it and tried to arrange them. Then upgraded to 08. Tried to figure this thing out myself, and haven't quit arrived yet. Questions:
I now have 4 iphoto folders in the App folder: 1) iphoto 7; 2) Library.iPhoto; 3) iPhoto Library; 4) iPhoto App. I deleted iphoto 06 (probably stupid, but hey, I did it). Now I don't know which folder(s) I should keep and which ones (if any) I should delete. I have imported all the photo files I had on my hard drive into the iphoto app. Also have some questions about what "dmg" files are, and whether they should be deleted after an up-date. Can anyone tell me what omni-outliner is? AND why is it so difficult to copy and paste into Word? Whenever I try to copy, say a couple of pages, and paste into Word, it locks up. Only happens in Word. Thanks for sharing all the knowledge folks. ONE MORE - Why is it so difficult when saving files, say in Photoshop CS2, to find the appropriate folder? I can't seem to get past "pictures" when I need a subfolder in pictures. Same is true when using other apps. Thanks again!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Getting a lot of questions in there at one go but we'll give it a try:
I now have 4 iphoto folders in the App folder: 1) iphoto 7; 2) Library.iPhoto; 3) iPhoto Library; 4) iPhoto App. I deleted iphoto 06 (probably stupid, but hey, I did it). Now I don't know which folder(s) I should keep and which ones (if any) I should delete.
In your APPLICATIONS folder you should ONLY have the iPhoto application. Your Library (which contains the actual photos) should be in your PICTURES folder. I can't tell you which to keep or not because I have no idea what those folders contain. Can you let us know?
Also have some questions about what "dmg" files are, and whether they should be deleted after an up-date.
A dmg is a virtual disk. They work as follows: you download the dmg and on it is the Application you want to install. Install the app then trash the dmg.
. Can anyone tell me what omni-outliner is?
It's an Outliner, naturally You can read about it here:
    http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omnioutliner/
AND why is it so difficult to copy and paste into Word? Whenever I try to copy, say a couple of pages, and paste into Word, it locks up. Only happens in Word.
I have no idea, but you might ask on the Microsoft forum:
    http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.mac.office.word/topics
ONE MORE - Why is it so difficult when saving files, say in Photoshop CS2, to find the appropriate folder? I can't seem to get past "pictures" when I need a subfolder in pictures. Same is true when using other apps.
Have a close look at that Save dialogue: There beside where you name the file you'll see and arrow. Click on it for a lot more options.
Hope this helps, let us know if you need more.

  • Installed third party applications not showing Application folder?

    Hi,
i've installed third party application outside from AppStore. i chosen "Anywhere" option on Gate keeper. however its not proper installation process hence how can i install? if i install third party application which is get .DMG file from some one else and installed. if i install those application its not displaying inside the Application folder on my Mac OS X 10.8.3.
    Please anyone suggest me,
    Thanks in Advance,
    Suresh Balakrishnan.

if i double click on Xcode icon, Xcode application lauched immediatly. however Xcode is not there in the Application folder.
Because you didn't drag and drop copy the app into the Applications folder, so your running it from the DMG instead.
A DMG is basically a disk image volume, like any other seperate hardware volume like a USB thumb drive, a external hard drive, or another partition, except it's virtual and based all in software.
If you don't know your way around a computer you shouldn't be using Xcode to begin with.

  • How do I uninstall software not in my applications folder? The icon won't drag and drop to trash.

I received a fitness device and downloaded the software. It didn't download to my Applications folder and I wasn't smart enought ot make sure I saved it there. Now the device doesn't work and I want to uninstall the software. I tried dragging and dropping the icon from Launchpad but that doesn't work. This lomg-time PC user turned Mac lover needs hlep!

well this is strange, but hang with me a sec.  Some of these will sound obvious but i have to ask them.
    1)  Are you 100% sure it's not in your application folder?  (I have downloaded stuff and looked for a while without seeing the app RIGHT in front of me).
    2) The hard thing to believe is that it is in your launchpad but NOT in your application folder.
    3) Try downloding it again....it might find the detect the old version and overwrite it.  I have never downloaded an app that did not automatically download to the applications folder, but if this one did, check to see what option it gives you to dowload to by default.  That way you can see maybe where it was installed to, and thus find it and delete it.  then reinstall to the applications folder.
    let me know

  • No access to Enturage application folder after installing Office 2004

I´m not sure this this the right forum, but when I ask Microsoft Enturage people, this is a Mac Tiger security/permission problem, and when I ask Apple people this is a Microsoft Enturage problem, so I don´t know.
So,my issue: I have just reinstalled my HD, using "archive & Install". After the installation, I installed Office 2004. Everything works fine (Word, Excel etc) extept for Enturage, I cannot run the application. The message I get after klicking the icon is:
"You do not have write access to the Enturage applocation folder. To run Enturage you must have the administrative user remove the Identities folder from the application folder."
I have an admin-user. I have not changed user (only me and the admin) during installation.
The reason for reinstalling my Mac was solely because of Enturage-problems, and now, after all this effort, it will still not work! This can make a person go insane!
I am not a very technical person, and will be very greatful for all help!

Did you shut down the database before moving files?I didn't move any files, I just copied some files to the other node.
Can you connect in sqlplus?Yes that was possible. I also had a connection to the database using TOAD.
After looking for the problem together with a colleague I've found out that I had to add some more listening addresses. The problem was that my nodes node1 and node2 have the IPs 10.10.10.2 and 10.10.10.3 but the virtual server of the cluster which forms the database oracledb for the clients runs on 10.10.10.103. So there was the name for e.g. node1 in the configuration files but also the IP-address 10.10.10.103 which the system couldn't resolve. After adding all possibilities using the Net Manager and after restarting the services it worked fine. At least until now. I haven't tried everything yet... I will go on tomorrow... thx so far.

  • Still some confusion on Icons in Application Folder

I installed Firefox & Thunderbird on my iMac. I like Firefox, but not T'Bird.
In the application folder, I have 2 Icons for Firefox - one looks like a computer drive, and the other is the same circle as I have in my dock. I have only one Icon for T'Bird - that being the one that looks like a computer drive. I also have both of these drive-like Icons on my desktop.
When I startup the computer, T'Bird is never on the dock. Firefox is. When I doubleclick on the drive-like Icon in the applications folder it opens a window under MacIntosh HD which if I then double click on, T'Bird opens. If I do the same with Firefox, firefox opens.
Which of these Icons should be in the Appl folder/ On the desktop? Do I get rid of some/ All?
    Thanks.

When you downloaded Firefox and T'Bird you got these guys that "look like a computer drive. They are 'Disk Images' and they are virtual computer drives. SO, double click on on, and there it is, under the Macintosh HD, just like a Drive.
To install the software, drag it from the Disk Image to the Applications Folder. You've done this with Firefox, but haven't with T'Bird. Then eject the DIsk Images and trash them. Thn in your Applications folder you have theround icons for the apps themselves, and not the icons for the disk images.

  • UserEvent connected to applications folder on an attached partition

This doesn't happen on a bare-bones Mountain Lion installation.  My regular installation goes back to 2007, has had numerous software updates and has a fair amount of third party software.
When I mount the partitions on my Drobo S, I typically get the following type of connection [output from lsof].
COMMAND   PID USER   FD   TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF    NODE NAME
    notifyd    14 root  297r   DIR   1,12     1360       2 /Volumes/B6
    notifyd    14 root  298r   DIR   1,12      442  421104 /Volumes/B6/usr
    notifyd    14 root  301r   DIR   1,12      238  130854 /Volumes/B6/private
    notifyd    14 root  304r   DIR   1,12      136  137088 /Volumes/B6/System
    notifyd    14 root  307r   REG   1,12  8192160 3538524 /Volumes/B6/mach_kernel
    notifyd    14 root  315r   DIR   1,12     2448  280507 /Volumes/B6/Library
    mds        39 root   64r   DIR   1,12     1360       2 /Volumes/B6
    UserEvent 915  rbp  137r   DIR   1,12     2040  463868 /Volumes/B6/Applications
    UserEvent 915  rbp  138r   DIR   1,12     1360       2 /Volumes/B6
The two UserEvent entries prevent me from dismounting (ejecting) the partition.  They do not exist on partitions I can dismount.
I am at a total loss as to what is creating this.  Consequently, I can't begin to determine how to prevent it.  PID 915 referes t the UserEventAgent, which I presume sets this up.

    ali b,
Yes, this an odd situation. When it last occurred, there was only one Apple Tech Support rep who understood the problem and knew how to fix it. It's a bit disappointing not be able to find any tech note referencing the problem and the solution. It's actually fairly simple, but sequence specific.
The "Application" folders that appeared in the search window were not the application folder containing all of my apps. Both were only 4KB in size. One contained an iTunes foler with some documentation in it. The other contained a Virtual PC folder with some scripts in it. The folder that contains my apps is actually over 7GB.
Again, I believe that the key to solving this problem involves creating a new folder, moving the contents from one to another, deleting the old and renaming the new. However, I also believe that some of these steps require terminal commands in order to accomplish the tasks. Ergo, a solid understanding of Unix is key to solving the problem.
