Visual Studio 2013 Missing Design, Source and Split buttons

Operating system Windows 8.1 preview.
When editing a HTML file in Visual Studio 2013 Preview or Visual Studio Express 2013 for Web, the Design, Source and Split tabs are missing from the bottom left of the editor even though the "Enable HTML Designer" box is checked in the Options
drop down.
This behavior occurs in the Web install of Visual Studio 2013 Preview and both the Web install and .iso install for Visual Studio Express 2013 Preview for Web.

Hi Jack:
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Yes the problem also occurs on a different Windows 8 machine running Visual Studio Express 2013 Preview for Web.
If I restart the VS IDE and reset the VS with the default settings, and then create a new sample, it DOES NOT WORK as expected. The Design, Source and Split tabs still are missing from the bottom left of the editor even though the "Enable
HTML Designer" box is checked in the Options drop down.
Here is an image, with buttons missing, of the lower left corner of the Visual Studio Express 2013 Preview for Web IDE.
Here is an image, with the buttons as expected, of the lower left corner of the Visual Studio Express 2012 for Web IDE
To try to repro the issue simply load a HTML file into the IDE of Visual Studio 2013 Professional Preview IDE or  Visual Studio Express 2013 Preview for Web IDE and see if the Design, Source and Split tabs are missing from the bottom left of the editor
even though the "Enable HTML Designer" box is checked in the Options drop down.

  • Visual Studio 2013 Pro - Winforms toolbox icons beside items are missing for some 3rd party vendors controls

I noticed last weekend after installing VS 2013.4 update that the Winforms toolbox, while showing all items, did not display the icons beside the items for any custom/third party Winform controls. The only icon
showing in the toolboxes are the Pointer icon. I can select and drop any control onto a project, and as soon as I move mouse into the design surface the icon shows. Neither the
builtin Winforms controls nor the WPF toolbox exhibit the same symptom. It is specific to Winforms third party controls (ActiPro and DevExpress). At first I thought it was due to the update, then I found that my laptop was
already exhibiting this symptom, running 2013.3 (I had not dropped any controls from the toolbox in the past few weeks so I did not notice).
The two machines (laptop and workstation) are running Windows 7 64-bit Professional and Ultimate, respectively. These machines are dedicated to development, and are secured, also running Norton Antivirus.
I also have VS 2010 and VS 2012 which don't exhibit the symptom, though I finally removed 2012 last night during my adventures. I had all three VS side by side, running well for months (I added VS 2013 in June). VS
2013 had been functioning well on a daily basis for the dozen or so Winforms projects and the odd WPF or MVC project.
I use DevExpress v2014 and ActiPro controls; I have been using them for years now.
I've spent 2 days trying remedies that include:
    Resetting Toolbox
Removal of *.spd files in %APPDATA%, restarting VS
Uninstall Visual Studio, remove and delete of any Visual Studio remnant in the registry, Program Files(x86), %APPDATA% and %PROGRAMDATA%, reinstall.
Repeat step 3 with VS 2013.1 and .3
Downgraded .NET to 4.5.1 to match my third, correctly functioning computer (also running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate).
DevExpress has told me this isn't a problem they have seen. At first I agreed, since my ActiPro controls also are missing their icons, but then I noted that other vendor controls display fine. Not sure what else to do but to nuke the workstation and install
    from OS up.

DevExpress is discussing this issue in the thread here : https://www.devexpress.com/support/center/Question/Details/T174133#comment-a98eedf1-ca54-4920-a2d6-49506ddae5b5
The small sample they provided in the thread actually reproduces the bug in my environment.
Since I cannot post screenshots here on MSDN forum (I explained above, when I try to attach pictures I
receive an error that my account is not verified). There is nothing more I can do.
This appears to be a bug in Visual Studio 2013. VS 2010 and 2012 are on the same machine and do not exhibit
the problem. It is frustrating how unresponsive Microsoft is to my issue. I am a long-time MSDN subscriber, as well as customer of multiple seats of the retail copies of Visual Studio. It looks like the only way to get attention is to pay for a incident. If
Microsoft is interested in actually seeing this bug in action, I have 2 machines that are preserved. I have installed a fresh environment on my backup PC.

  • SQL Server 2012 with Visual Studio 2013 with SSIS/Integration services project?

I wanted to build an integration services project to import data from multiple sources using a vendor's API.
I wish I could recall how I got to the point where I was able to build one and have it run successfully, but I had to install so many things that I honestly don't remember.
However, I noticed my PC booting really slowly after that, and I saw that I had components of VS 2010, VS 2012 and VS 2013 installed, along with SQL Server 2008 and 2012.  So I uninstalled a bunch of stuff, hoping to get to where I had only the most
current versions of all, that were compatible with my corporate environment.  So I was aiming for Visual Studio 2013 (Premium, I think) and SQL Server 2012.
Took me 2 days.  Now I'm at the point where I think - and I'm here to learn if I'm correct - that I cannot get an oData Source component into my project and use VS 2013 IF I want to stick with Sql Server 2012.  Is that correct?
I get very confused when trying to determine how the acronyms relate:  SSIS, SSDT, SSDT-BI, etc.

    Hi Anonymous11847,
SSDT: Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools for Visual Studio 2010, it contains Business Intelligence project templates for Analysis Services, Integration Services, and Reporting Services that support Visual Studio 2010. This can be installed when SQL Server is
installed. It supports various SQL Server versions as follows:
SSAS projects can target SQL Server 2012 or lower
SSRS projects can target SQL Server 2012 or lower
SSIS projects can target only SQL Server 2012
SSDT-BI for VS 2012: Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools - Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2012, it contains Business Intelligence project templates for Analysis Services, Integration Services, and Reporting Services that support Visual Studio 2012.
This needs to be separately downloaded and installed. It supports various SQL Server versions as follows:
SSAS projects can target SQL Server 2012 or lower
SSRS projects can target SQL Server 2012 or lower
SSIS projects can target only SQL Server 2012
SSDT-BI for VS 2013: Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools - Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2013, it contains Business Intelligence project templates for Analysis Services, Integration Services, and Reporting Services that support Visual Studio 2013.
This needs to be separately downloaded and installed. It supports various SQL Server versions as follows:
SSAS projects can target SQL Server 2014 or lower
SSRS projects can target SQL Server 2014 or lower
SSIS projects can target only SQL Server 2014
So if the SQL Server version is SQL Server 2012, we should install SSDT or SSDT-BI for VS2012 to create SSIS project.

  • Cannot start Visual Studio 2013 Community edition

    Windows 7 on a 64-bit PC...
Downloaded the installer vs_community.exe for Visual Studio 2013 with Update4 yesterday and ran it.
It took about 1 hour and 20 minutes. At the end the installer reported the web deployment function
could not be found/installed and that I could locate and install it myself later. It then told me to
restart the PC, which I did, but the Community edition had not been added to the start menu.
There are other Visual Studio versions on this PC:
Visual C# 2010 Express, Visual Express 2012, Visual Express 2013 and Visual Studio 2013 Ultimate
trial version. They can all be started from the menu and do not interfere with each other and they
installed without problems. There are 4 weeks evaluation time left for VS 2013 Ultimate and I want to
make use of that. VS Express can be shown the door if any of these might be blocking the
    Community version.
I am puzzled by one more VS directory named Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 in Program Files(x86). This
contains many items added yesterday by the Community install including a directory named Community
with with two files licencse.htm and ThirdPartyNotices.txt. It also contains files and directories
added in November last year (ImportProjects, Preemptive Solutions...(don't remember what or if I was installing)) and some added in February this year when I installed VS Ultimate 2013 trial. So the VS 2012 directory contains a mix of items placed there by
    VS 2013 installers.
    Questions:
    1. Could this mixed use be the cause of the Community version not being on the Start menu?
    2. what can I do to fix this without losing the VS Ultimate trial?
    3. Can Community version coexist with other VS versions?

I was installing by running vs_community.exe.
When I let the mouse hover over this file name information about the file pops up:
File Description: Microsoft Visual Studio 2013 Community with Update4
    File version: 12.0.31101.0
    Size: 1.18MB
I don't know, but I would guess this file installs the Community version.
I did not notice that the Community version will not run on the same computer as other VS 2013 versions. Is this in the documentation? And will the Community version be blocked by VS Express
    versions too?
Now, as far as I understand to make the Community version work I will need to uninstall the VS Ultimate 2013 trial first. Will that remove the Ultimate files in the MS VS12.0 directory in Program Files (X86)? and will uninstalling Community remove its contribution?
I mentioned there are other files too in MS VS12.0, like SDK, Silverlight, WDExpress and Web. I don't remember installing any other program that might have put them there. Do I have to empty or remove MS VS12.0 before installing the community version? Then,
if there are some left-overs can I just delete MS VS12.0 manually?

After upgrading my Silverlight client to the March 2014 upgrade, I get a NullReferenceException on the load of every screen with the call stack showing:

  • Visual Studio 2013 hangs/freezes when trying to click the designer view

my Visual Studio 2013 update 1 hangs/freezes when trying to click the designer view, after clicking "Design" I can not click "split" neather "Source". What can I do ? I already tried to set the "HTML (Web Forms) Editor
" as "Default"... thanks for support.
In VS2010 the same worked fine.
    I "Run as Administrator".
    ty for help

    Hi,
I assume that you are not using VS2013 Express version. In order to get the reason about the hang issue, please use devenv /log to gather activity.xm log and find HR error from this log.If it shows some package corrupt, try to repair your VS.
    Here are my general suggestions:
Please try to run devenv /ResetSettings (in command prompt) to eliminate the related potential settings problem.
Try disabling Add-ins (e.g. “Tools” | “Add-in Manager”) or run “devenv.exe /SafeMode”.This can eliminate the possibility that third party Add-ins or packages are causing problems. Also you can try these command lines:
    devenv.exe /resetskippkgs and devenv.exe /resetuserdata
Try to create a new user account. This can help isolate user profile corruption related causes.
If the suggestions above are no help, please reinstall your VS.

  • Visual Studio 2013 slows down + crashes when using Source Control features.

I have spent two full days trying to resolve this issue but no luck so here we go,
I have created a project using Visual Studio Team Foundation Server plug-in in the past. Later on I switched to
    Microsoft Git Provider.
Now when I connect to that project in the Team Explorer and double click on the solution to work on it locally it somehow changes the plug in to Microsoft Git Provider automatically and of course I can't
Commit/Commit and Push since I receive following error in the Team Explorer,
An error occurred. Detailed message: Failed to open directory 'C:/Users/.../AppData/Local/Application Data/'
Manually changing the plug-in to the Visual Studio Team Foundation Server
results in a broken Team Explorer as below,
With Settings leading to an empty pane, and also a warning in the Team Explorer's Changes page telling me the message below if I click on Pending Changes...
Microsoft Git Provider is not the current Source Control plug-in. Change Plug-in
And manually selecting the solution from Solution Explorer, right click and
Add Solution to Source Control, leads to never ending hour glass and (Not responding) visual studio.
    New Projects
Creating a new project is straight forward, unless I "Add to Source Control" is checked. If so, again never ending process if Microsoft TFS plug-in is selected in the tools and eventually me Ending the Visual Studio task. And a VERY long process
(40+ mins) if I have chosen Microsoft Git but that finishes successfully rather.
New TFS project from Team Explorer
If I create a new project in my Online Web Studio
Click on Open with Visual Studio Link => Opens and connects to a my newly created TFS in team explorer.
Clicking new in Team Explorer under Solutions to create a new solution and bind it to this Repo
leads to straight crash of Visual Studio and restarting attempt of VS.
So I really can't use Source Control from visual studio other than cloning GitHub's existing repo's on Visual Studio and Committing my current Microsoft Git managed projects.
    I have attempted
Repairing Visual Studio (no luck in results)
    Devenv.exe /setup (no luck)
Trying to scrap the SCC info on my solution then at least it won't get picked up by source control then I can Check it in as a new project. (no luck and the solution picks the Microsoft Git upon opening it by clicking on the .sln file.) I have followed
these steps in this stack overflow answer.
And lots of mucking around like removing my workspaces almost Thousand times and putting them back, binding and etc.
I am really stuck on this and it's holding me back from staring a new project (which is problematic using Adding to Source Control) and unfortunately is dependent on the old project (which is developed under Visual Studio Team Foundation Server Plug-in which
    is throwing tantrums)
Would like to hear you pro-s input on this
    Using
Visual Studio 2013 Community edition (recently switched from Pro to Express to Community)
    Windows 7 (64-bit)
    Git tools
    Git windows installation

    Hi Mehradzie,
Based on the description, seems you're working with Git team project in Visual Studio Online(formerly Team Foundation Service). I'd like to know whether you mean Visual Studio Git command tool as the plug-in, and if you're trying to create solutions/projects
with Visual Studio and add them to the created Git team project.
From the screenshot, you're not connect to the Git team project by using Team Explorer. To work with Git team project locally, you can follow the instructions as below:
Connect to Git team project by using Team Explorer, after that you might install Git tools if you connect to the team project for the first time
Clone the remote Git repository to a local git repository and set the path to local git repository
Create a solution and select Git source control, also saved to the local path of the local git repository
Select your branch, and then click "Changes" and Commit the changes
Click "unsynced commits" and push the commit to remote git repository
You can also refer to the links below for more information about getting started with Git in Visual Studio Online.

  • Problems running .aspx and aspx.vb in DW (pages work correctly in MS Visual Studio 2013)

I'm very confused and surprised I can't seem to find any postings on this problem. It's very peculiar so stay with me: I've designed a VB .Net webpage called Regstration_Form.aspx in Visual Studio 2013 (which is tied to a second form, Registration_Form.aspx.vb which contains the active visual basic script that processes data entered on the .aspx page). I've tested this page in Visual Studio 2013, AND IT WORKS AS IT IS SUPPOSED TO...the webpage looks clean, accepts the data entered on the page, and the buttons execute the visual basic script from the .aspx.vb page flawlessly.
NOW, I've designed an html website in Dreamweaver CS6 with multiple (passive) .html pages, and I want to integrate the .aspx/.aspx.vb pages with the others in Dreamweaver now that I have them working in VS 2013.  After all, Dreamweaver let's me (and proclaims to) save files as aspx files and support their functionality.  It seems to me I should be able to simply move them in to the Dreamweaver folder for the website (along with the config file in the root), but...here's what happens:
    (1) when I test run the aspx page from Dreamweaver, the browser webpage shows the html code in black-and-white (code view). It does not display the actual webpage.
    (2) (even weirder) If I change the .aspx page extension to .html, the browser (correctly) shows the webpage I've designed. BUT, now when I click the "submit" button to perform the active tasks (again, which work in VS 2013), the webpage changes from the correct webpage shown only moments earlier to now SHOWING THE ASPX.VB CODE.
Put another way, dreamweaver displays html code if the page is .aspx, and displays .aspx.vb code if the .aspx page is changed to .html. Either way, my aspx pages are not being executed correctly by Dreamweaver, despite working perfectly well in VS 2013 and I cannot figure out why.
I have enabled IIS on my computer.
I have placed the config file in the root.
I have enabled .NET functionality in Dreamweaver's "disabled features" folder.
I'm stumped...does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!

I don't work with ASPX sites.  But PHP sites need a local testing server defined in DW.

  • SQL Server Express and Visual Studio 2013

In February I installed Visual Studio 2013 Professional. Looking in the Control Panel at all my installed programs, I see that I have a bunch of SQL server-related programs loaded, from the 2013 install and also from installs of previous Visual Studio versions.
I've never done a thing with SQL server express, and am completely clueless about using it. I've already wanted to take a crack at it but it always seemed too daunting, so I backed off. It seems, however, that over the years the integration of SQL Server Express
with Visual Studio is getting more and more seamless. Here is a list of all the SQL Server-related programs on my computer, with the ones installed automatically from the Visual Studio 2013 install bolded so they'll stand out. What I'm wondering is if I have

  • FluidLayout missing from Blend for Visual Studio 2013 (Universal App)

    Hi,
I am building a Universal App with Visual Studio Professional 2013 Update 4 and Blend for Visual Studio 2013 and I cannot find the icon to switch on FluidLayout at all. The curvy icon does not seem to be there at all. When trying to find the xaml that goes
with UseFluidLayout, I noticed that this a property on ExtendedVisualStateManager which I don't reference since the assembly that contains this class does not seem to exists for Universal Apps. Has anyone got an idea what I need to do to enable FluidLayout
in a Universal App in Blend?
    Best wishes,
    Marc.

    Hello DobaKung,
    Thank you for your post.
I would like to know which version of Visual Studio you are using. Is the HTML project the HTML 5 project? Are you working with windows store app?
Based on your description, I feel that your issue is out of support range of VS general questions forum which mainly discusses
WPF & SL designer, Visual Studio Guidance Automation Toolkit, Developer Documentation and Help System

Hope you can provide us more information so that we can further look at this issue and help you better.

  • Unit Testing with Microsoft Sharepoint Emulators and Fakes with Visual Studio 2013

    Hi All,
I have created Test Project and now creating Test cases for Sharepoint. I found a link on MSDN which suggests using Fakes framework but it supports VS2012 and I am using Visual Studio 2013.
So how can I use it with VS2013 or is there any other way with which I can implement the Test cases with VS2013.
    Please suggest.
    Thanks in advance.
    Himanshu Nigam

    Hi HimanshuNigam,
According to your descrition, my understanding is that you want to use Fakes framework to create test case for SharePoint project in Visual Studio 2013.
If you want to test using Fakes Framework, you can use the codeplex extension to achieve it. It supports Visual Studio 2013.
Here is a detailed article for your reference:

About how to include the Nuget package, you can use the package with the link below:
NuGet Package Manager for Visual Studio 2013
    Installing NuGet
If you still have question about this issue, I suggest you can create a post in Visual Studio, more experts will help you and you can get more detailed information from there:

  • Windows 7 with SharePoint 2013 Foundation and Visual Studio 2013

    Hi,
I am begginer with Sharepoint 2013 Foundation.
My company installed Sharepoint 2013 Foundation on a virtual Server. I installed
Visual Studio 2013 on my local computer. Also i created a developer site.
Based on http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/office/jj220047(v=office.15).aspx#RDOverview I installed Office
Developer Tools for Visual Studio 2013 on my local computer.
I am trying to remotely develop apps
with Visual Studio 2013. In the option What SharePoint site do you want to use for debugging your App? i put the url
    of developer site.
First of all, i had to choose if the apps will be SharePoint-hosted or Provider-hosted apps. Based on http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/office/fp142379(v=office.15).aspx and http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/office/fp142381(v=office.15).aspx,
i decided to followed SharePoint-hosted because is the only type that applies to SharePoint 2013 Foundation.
I followed the steps of http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/office/fp142379(v=office.15).aspx, which is the quide for How to:Create a basic SharePoint-hosted app. In Step 10 for deploy my app i get the following error:
Error occurred in deployment step 'Install app for SharePoint': Failed to install app for SharePoint. Please see the output window for details.
    What is the problem?
Also, the visual studio need to be installed on the server where sharepoint was installed?
Moreover, do I need app catalog for testing and deploy apps?
    thanks, Aphrodite

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you have an issue about creating app.
Per my knowledge, the issue is caused that you don’t configure the app catalog URLs from the central administration.
It means that we should create an App site catalog site collection to hold our Apps.

  • Windows 8.1 users: Visual studio 2013 design rendering issues

Has any 8.1 user experienced this yet. I am pretty sure it' my laptop. John i know you was thinking about a yoga pro 2. Did you get One?
Basically a form i wrote in 2010 from xp will appear massively different if ANY UI changes are made. The form will appear as expected and drawn up until this point.
Image One attached is the form should appear. Image Two is after i add a random button that you can see. The whole form does not even render. It crunches it all together. I assume this is a laptop resolution issue?

    Hi Suvy,
From your description, could you please tell me how you renew your developer license for Windows 8.1 from Visual Studio 2013 Community Edition?
Generally, we can renew the developer license by going to PROJECT->Store->Acquire Development License… like the following screen shot.
In addition, as you said that you get the error in the 'contacting license server' stage for too long and eventually doesn't proceed further.
You mean that you did not get the developer license window which requires input the Microsoft account like the following screen shot, am I right?
If yes, as you said that the Avast antivirus installed and running. I suggest you can try to disable or un-install it check if it can work.
To make sure that it is not your VS IDE issue, please reset your VS settings, and then run it as the admin, test it again.
You can also try to run your VS in safe mode to make sure that it is not the add-ins or the extension tools’ issue.

In addition, I got different ways to get a developer license, maybe you could check it here:
