VLSM - what do you do with the unused IPs ? are we able to group / reuse them ? - brainstorm

Hi all,
At the end of all the VLSM subnetting over at the thread below.
http://computernetworkingnotes.com/subnetting-supernetting-and-vlsm/vlsm.html
The user is left with 20 ips unused; on his very last VLSM is 192.168.1.224/30 it gaves him another 8 more subnets of 2 usable hosts each.
In which he has only utilize 3 of those, leaving behind 5 subnets left (20 ips)
3 of the subnets used below
Subnet
Subnet 57
Subnet 58
Subnet 59
Network ID
224
228
232
First host
225
229
233
Last host
226
230
234
Broadcast ID
227
231
235
q1) Is there anyway whereby instead of having left with the choice to use the 5 subnets each with 2 usable hosts for future usages, is there any way i can consolidate the remaining 5 subnets into a larger subnet with more hosts ?
if i set a new subnet with 192.168.1.240/29, will there be any conflict ? as some of the other subnet  192.168.1.232/29 will be in conflict with the subnet 59 as shown above, but i will not be using them. I will only use 192.168.1.240/29.
So far from VLSM, i am seeing it as taking a subnet and break it further to smaller subnet , but can we also like group the remaining smaller subnets at the end into a bigger one ?
Regards,
Noob

So the starting point is 192.168.1.236.
Try applying the maths I suggested to the above eg.
255.255.255.192 = 256 - 192 = 64
so you know the last subnet = 192.168.1.192 which doesn't work.
255.255.255.224 = 256 - 192 = 32 ie. your subnets go up in 32s.
Here your subnets go up in 32s and if you counted from the start the last available subnet would be 192.168.1.224 which is no good.
255.255.255.240 = 256 - 240 = 16 so your subnets go up in 16s. Again if you counted from the start the last useable subnet is 192.168.1.240 which is okay because it starts after 192.168.1.236.
255.255.255.248 = 256 - 248 = 8 which will also work but you are looking for the largest subnet.
So you now know the largest subnet you can get from your remaining IPs is -
192.168.1.240 255.255.255.240
if you wanted to use the other IPs you would then need -
192.168.1.236 255.255.255.252
ie. 256 - 252 = 4 and if you counted up from the start 192.168.1.236 is a valid subnet and the next one is 192.168.1.240 so it works.
If you entered 192.168.1.236 255.255.255.240 what that actually works out as is 192.168.1.224 255.255.255.240 which is not what you want because you have already used some of those IPs.
That is what I meant about bit boundaries.
You get used to the maths very quickly so I have been saying count up from the start but you can just as easily multiply the number in your head to work out available subnets and it does become second nature with practice.

  • Smart Folders - what do you do with the messages?

I am trying to organize business email using Smart Mailboxes. I love that I can click the Smart Mailbox and see all the correspondence I've had with that person in one folder. This is enormously helpful!
The question is this - what do I do with the original message? I now have HUNDREDS of emails sitting in my inbox. I can't delete them or they'll be gone from the Smart Mailbox, right? But I lose emails that I need to reply to because they get buried in the clutter.
What's the best way to handle this, create a Rule to move them to another folder after they've been read?

Smart Mailboxes are not for organizing messages. They are for finding messages that meet specified criteria. A Smart Mailbox is basically a saved search. For organizing, you want regular (non-smart) mailboxes. Use rules to file incoming messages automatically.

  • What do you do with the download after downloaded? Sorta.

Once an app/zip file/font etc. had been downloaded....I'm supposed to drag and drop to folder. Let's use applications as an example. I download Firefox. Drag/drp to app folder. Install etc.
Now, FF icon is on desktop under macHD icon. If/When FF disappears from dock, I select this icon (the one under macHD), then a little 3x5 window pops up-the same one that I used to drag the original FF to the app folder. Should that still be there? Do I delete it? And why do I have to have all these icons on my desktop? I want something like the PC start menu.
    Thanks

"Extract" means to transfer the application out of the archive or disc image. Zip or SIT archives, for example, must have their contents extracted by an unarchiver such as Stuffit Expander or The Unarchiver - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
With a disc image the actual file is contained on the disc image. When you double-click the .dmg file the disc is mounted on the Desktop. The file is stored on the mounted disc.
I don't know what most users use as a base, frankly. I've found both Windows and Mac OS as well as the several others I've used to be relatively easy to learn by just working with them and forgetting about what the other one did or how. But if you feel the need you can look at:
    Switch 101 .

  • What do you do with the stickers?

I noticed I have two white apple stickers in my box that the keyboard and mouse came in. What do I do with them? Do they go somewhere specific?

Apple believes everyone who owns a Mac will be overcome by love for the product and want to share it with the world.
They can be placed anywhere you feel compelled to put them-in your window, on your car, on your friends windows laptop, middle of your forehead, refrigerator, toilet seat, etc.
    Enjoy and have fun.

  • What do you get with the ios developer program

i am wondering what is all you get with it becasue i want to kno before i waste $99

  • What would you do with the Map Module?

The only obvious (to me) use is geotagging your photos. Helpful if you ever want to remember exactly where a photo was shot, or to inform others of the exact location.
I can only think of one other possible use for the Map Module. I like to take pictures of old houses and old buildings. If I geotag all my photos, and then select to see where they are on a map of a specific city or town, I can then see parts of the city or town that I haven't photographed.
What other uses do you have for the Map Module?

It’s really ideal for hiking trips if you use a GPS track log which can be used to review your exact trail, and also synchronized with the photos taken (provided your camera clock is set correctly)
If you upload your photos and data for public sharing, the information is useful to others planning a similar trip and can aid mountain safety.
Google maps are certainly not sufficiently detailed for mountain navigation. I use topographical maps of 1:50,000 or 1:25,000 but the aerial views and satellite images can be useful in conjunction with local photos.
Stock photo libraries may also store the metadata in the future, if not already; so it could become an aid to sales!

  • What are the standard def channels you receive with the SD receiver?

Nowhere on the site can I find a clear definitiion of what you receive with the $5.99 SD receiver as opposed to what you get without it. I can see that you get up to CH 49 with a std cable TV tuner but I don't see what else you get with the $5.99 setup. Is it ALL channels not marked HD (with the exception of pay things like HBO etc)?  Just looking for some clarity. Thanks.

You get almost everything non-premium (HBO, STARZ, Showtime, Cinemax, etc. are excluded) below 500 (if you're not subscribed to extreme HD or sports in NY/NNJ you also won't get some of the sports channels in the 300's) and all the music choice channels.

    Hello John...
You may have a Safari third party add on installed that was compatible with the previous version of Safari but not 5.1. Try troubleshooting > Safari: Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues

  • What can be done with the fingerprint reader?

I am trying to figure out simply what I can do with the fingerprint reader on the T400. I understand how to use it to log into the computer. My main question is whether or not I can use the fingerprint reader in the following contexts, and if so how.
1a) To  log into internet password protected websites. When I use IE, the password manager pops up and prompts me to save a password. If I save it, I can return to that website and it automatically will enter the login information and password for me. I want to know whether you can have password manager (or another program) prompt the user for the fingerprint and then submit the login information. That way the information is protected each time I log in, but I do not need to enter log in information each time, only a fingerprint.
1b) If this is possible in IE8, I would like to know if it is possible in Firefox 3, in which password manager does not pop up.
    2) Can it be used to log into MS Outlook.
    3) Can it be used to lock documents in MS Word.
I much appreciate any information letting me know if these can be done, and if so, how to do them. Thank you very much for your help!

After playing with it for a while I figured out at least questions 1a) and 1b). For anyone else who has the same questions:
1a) Have your browser save the password using Lenovo's Password Manager. Then open password manager and open that item.  Click the advanced tab and change the security level to custom. Click "Customize Security Policy" and select "Protect with a Fingerprint."
1b) Lenovo has a patch to synch Password Manager with firefox 3. It can be found here and is much easier than the manual fixes found on this forum.
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-70132
I am still looking for help with 3) and 4), particurally 3). Please let me know if you have any ideas. Thank you very much!!

  • Where are all my bookmarks - what have you done with Mozilla? you have screwed up my computer!

Everything I had on my tool bar, and all the sites listed in my Bookmarks are GONE!!!
What have you done with those sites? They were very important to me - I can not handle all these changes by Mozilla - None of these changes are of any use to me. I want to go back to my original screen and when I logged on today you would not let me access my internet and original screen without entering info that changed everything on my computer window!!! Help me find those BOOKMARKS
Mozilla Firefox is not user friendly - I don't want all these apps - EBay, Weather or YouTube! I had the necessary sites listed that are important and used everyday - not those listed. Who are you to determine what "apps" I should be using???
edit: email address edited out but it is likely too late for search bots grabbing it.

I'm desperate to get back my Bookmarks in the same unsorted way and easily accessible as I had previously - at the moment they are hidden away in some sort of zipped form I am unable to access: they were previously listed in the ideal way for me to access - as chronologically bookmarked and disparate. It really is infuriating to have this level of interference with my personal affairs on my computer without even seeking my consent. Ideally I want a return to the earlier version of Firefox which worked perfectly well for me - I'm plagued with excessive slowness and freezing since the latest -Firefox 5.0- update was installed. Is there any simple way to revert back to the earlier version of Firefox?

from : OS X Beta Seed Program FAQ
How do I get a shipping version of OS X back on my Mac?
To get a shipping release of OS X on your Mac, you can simply install the final version of the software you are testing when it appears in Software Update.
How do I leave the OS X Beta Seed Program?
To leave the program, visit the Leave Program page and follow the instructions to remove your Apple ID and your computers from the OS X Beta Seed Program. This will stop pre-release updates from appearing in the Mac App Store on your computers.
You only need to do more than you already have, if you'd rather not see future pre-release updates.
